Suspect shoots and wounds artist after altercation at rally for New Mexico statue

- Authorities in New Mexico are investigating a shooting captured on video that left one person shot during a rally for a Don Juan de Oñate statue on Thursday.
The video posted on Instagram shows a scuffle after a group of men approach the suspect who was wearing a "MAGA" hat and later jumps a small retaining wall to escape before pulling out a gun, CNN says.
It’s unclear what led to the altercation that ended in the shooting, according to CNN.
During a press conference Thursday, Rio Arriba County Sheriff Billy Merrifield said the suspect was taken into custody. He's been identified as 23-year-old Ryan Martinez of New Mexico.
The shooting victim is reportedly receiving medical care but right now, their condition is unknown, CNN says.
The statue was taken down in 2020. a rededication was scheduled to take place Thursday.

In the United States, you only have the right to use "REASONABLE" force when you're "ACTIVELY" being attacked, and using lethal force only when your life or the lives of those around you are in danger. Though, even if that's the law, he could still get off scot free since the courts decisions tend to be based on the political ideology of their state or city rather than the law itself more and more often nowadays

I was winning a fight once I had the guy pinned & let him go because he begged me. As soon as we were back on our feet he blind sides me . That hurt me a lot it was a lesson I never forgot.
I learned this young with friends and enemies alike. NEVER play fair because they wont. That being said I never let anyone into a position where I can be blindsided if possible. Especially not someone aggressive or who's been physical with me. You were too bro like and learned he wasn't your bro.
