Dashcam footage shows Chicago man shooting state trooper during traffic stop

- A 37-year-old man who police say is a suspect in a Chicago slaying has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of an Illinois state trooper during a traffic stop in Springfield. Released dashcam footage shows what happened during this stop.
Cristobal Santana's initial Sangamon County Circuit Court appearance and detention hearing were held virtually Friday from a hospital, Sangamon County State's Attorney Dan Wright said.
Santana was hospitalized for injuries suffered during his arrest. He also was charged with aggravated battery and unlawful use of a weapon.
The trooper approached Santana's vehicle about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, state police said.
Santana exited his vehicle and "proceeded to discharge multiple rounds of ammunition in the direction of" the trooper, according to a petition filed with the court.
When Santana's gun became inoperable he began to beat the trooper in the head and face, the petition continued.
The trooper was shot at least twice in the leg and suffered severe head injuries. His in-car camera and surveillance video from a nearby apartment complex recorded the attack, according to the petition.
Santana fled but was captured about 2 a.m. Wednesday during a search by officers from multiple law enforcement agencies.
The Associated Press was unable Friday night to leave a phone message with the Sangamon County Public Defender's office seeking comment on Santana's behalf. The office was closed.
State police and Chicago police did not provide details of the Chicago slaying Santana is a suspect in, but relatives of Adrianna Lopez told WLS-TV and the Chicago Sun-Times that the suspect in the woman's fatal shooting Sunday night had been arrested.

If had had actual professional training, first, he wouldn't be slapping the trigger like he did and instead shoot off trigger reset. Secondly his rate of fire for the distance he was engaging at was too far for that rate and was thus obviously throwing his shots of target with his poor marksmanship.
Furthermore, when he initially engaged the cop he shot over the roof while he stood behind the rear door. In a vehicle close combat course (VCQB) you will learn the rear door is concealment and not cover. Secondly from any tactical combat course you learn to shoot behind barricades, and nowhere do you shoot over a roof. He shot from the vehicle poorly exposing his upper thoracic region and head to the cop and not shooting from a kneeling position adhering to the from of cover behind the rear wheel-well while being BACKED OFF the cover. You don't want to hug your cover.
EVEN WORSE, he wasn't even behind cover, he was behind concealment. When he took "cover", he was being the rear door. Bullets go through that. Furthermore, the way he took "cover" wasn't a train response. He dipped down, hugging his concealment loosing complete visual of the enemy and was looking DOWN, with his muzzle pointed DOWN. NOOO Noo in PROFESSIONAL tactical training. It's so easy to see this guy has no training if you have training. You always keep your muzzle in the direction if the threat or at the low ready position. You gun does you nothing if the muzzle is pointed at the ground during a gun fight. And you never LOOK down at the ground. He should've taken a knee behind the rear wheel-well, backed off from the cover, while mainting visual of the direction of the incoming rounds while keeping his gun at the low ready position ready to engage at the instant he saw his target.

State Troopers roll solo. It's one of the most dangerous LEO jobs you can have.
This happened in Springfield, IL, not Chicago. The assailant was wanted for homicide of a special education teacher that happened in Chicago. The state tropper pulled him over off of Toronto rd in Springfield, IL where he got out of his car and fired 10 times on the trooper striking him once in the leg, then he proceeded to pistol whip the trooper with his gun causing multiple skull and face fractures. The trooper survived and is still recovering in the hospital. The assailant was caught and is currently locked up in the Sangamon County jail awaiting trial.
My dear God this is terrifying. I hope the officer is OK. Scary indeed I know he was caught off guard it probably scared the heck out of the officer. I hope they cault this guy before he kills someone

It's not shown in this video, but two people help the state trooper and he (reportedly) got back to his car and chased Cristobal Santana down. Eventually a trooper (not necessarily the shot trooper) hit Santana at high speed with the police car sending him flying and leaving him sprawled across a road. Both Santana and the shot trooper ended up in the hospital. Santana had just murdered his ex-girlfriend, so this is apparently why he went crazy. How he thought he was going to get away with any of it is impossible to know. He'll die in prison for sure.

This video is questionable.. At the beginning of the video there’s a car driving just behind the driver of the Honda during the 1st and 2nd shot fired at the police officer.
The 2nd video from the different angle showed no car at all behind the Honda driver at the same exact times of the shots fired in the initial video from the dash cam.

What's needed is something in the middle with actual common sense criminal justice reforms and police reforms, as well as additional training for police. Not even a year academy training is not enough time for them to even understand the laws they're supposed to be enforcing. Nothing will change though becasue there's 0 accountability on either side.

I met one while he was having a bad day. I got him out of the situation before real harm was done and took him where he needed to go. Over a bit of time he told me his story and it was truly harrowing.

Furthermore, when he initially engaged the cop he shot over the roof while he stood behind the rear door. In a vehicle close combat course (VCQB) you will learn the rear door is concealment and not cover. Secondly from any tactical combat course you learn to shoot behind barricades, and nowhere do you shoot over a roof. He shot from the vehicle poorly exposing his upper thoracic region and head to the cop and not shooting from a kneeling position adhering to the from of cover behind the rear wheel-well while being BACKED OFF the cover. You don't want to hug your cover.
EVEN WORSE, he wasn't even behind cover, he was behind concealment. When he took "cover", he was being the rear door. Bullets go through that. Furthermore, the way he took "cover" wasn't a train response. He dipped down, hugging his concealment loosing complete visual of the enemy and was looking DOWN, with his muzzle pointed DOWN. NOOO Noo in PROFESSIONAL tactical training. It's so easy to see this guy has no training if you have training. You always keep your muzzle in the direction if the threat or at the low ready position. You gun does you nothing if the muzzle is pointed at the ground during a gun fight. And you never LOOK down at the ground. He should've taken a knee behind the rear wheel-well, backed off from the cover, while mainting visual of the direction of the incoming rounds while keeping his gun at the low ready position ready to engage at the instant he saw his target.

I'm not a perfect person.. Ive been pulled over a few times. Never seen a officer approach my vehicle with his hands next to the pistol. Lucky, by being honest of my wronge doings. I've been let go with a warning.

As some one who served 10 years in prison from 18-28 years old, I must say that death is easy and life in prison is very very hard. After the adrenaline from the crimes wears off, after the anger wears off, after whatever drug or alcohol you was on that encouraged you to do what you did wears off, once your in that cell stripped of all humanity . It’s just you, your thoughts , the consequences of your actions & God. Reality starts to set in. Not to mention the horrible variation of things that go on in prison that are inhumane. I’m 100% convinced that life in prison is a living death sentence that hurts worse than the death penalty. In my opinion from some one who was in prison for 10 years with lifers who were my roommates.

The Officer survived, he was shot several times in the leg, then hit numerous times, causing a skull fracture, broken bones to his face and a brain bleed. In November he was undergoing rehab. The suspect was hit by a police cruiser and was still in the hospital as of November.
