Testing How Much POWER Performance Cars Really Have: PT 1

- čas přidán 5. 01. 2023
- Mat’s brought four of his favourite performance cars down to the dyno, and he’s about to see just how accurate their performance figures are compared to what the manufacturers claim they’ll be!
We’ve got an Audi RS6, AMG E63 S, BMW M5 Competition and a Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, and combined, they all pack a serious punch!
On paper, the Porsche should deliver the most power, with its 4-litre twin-turbo V8 combined with an electric motor to put down 700hp and 870Nm of torque. But then again, we’ve drag-raced all four of these cars multiple times, and more often than not, the M5 Competition comes out on top!
But will it be the same result today? Or could the RS6 or E63 S spring a surprise? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S DO THIS!

Please do this with more cars! It's really interesting to see claimed vs real power, torque and weight figures. Maybe you could do some hot hatches next?
Deffo 👌🏿
Heck yeah hot hatches would be perfect for this, maybe even get a power to weight per dollar comparison
I would bet the house the MK8 Golf R is making way more then claimed.
@@DabDabGoose Same here
Problem is that dynos do not give absolutely correct power figures. You can only really compare cars tested on the same dyno, they can be compared to each other. But the figures cannot be compared to other figures tested on a different dyno.
Sure, there are probably some very well calibrated dynos, operated in very certain, controlled temperature and air pressure to give really accurate figures, but these tuner shop dynos probably aren't.
every dyno is different. Putting all 4 cars on the same dyno on the same day really put things into perspective in terms of how the power level of each car differs. Great video!
But did they all use the same fuel ist the big question
@@conor7154 we use 99
The crazy thing is the measured power is to the wheel which is not how horse powers are advertised. They are supposedly measured on an engine dyno. So I would add an extra 10 percent to what is being shown.
What they might (!) have done is to measure the weakest output number in relation to the marketed number (Audi RS6) and 1) first corrected it with some coefficient to make it seem like it produced the claimed power (600hp) all along (to avoid reputation damage to any of the manufacturers) and then 2) used the same correction factor (coefficient) for all the other cars as well.
@@conor7154 they have a different way of measuring it then we do. 99 Ron is between 94 and 95 octane. Or so they say.
The whp numbers measured here are about the same as 93 octane in the US and all of these cars would produce more power on the stock tune with higher octane.
This dyno/weight drag race is a brilliant idea. I want to see you guys doing this more!!
I'm glad you did the M5 Comp but would love to have seen the difference in the M5 CS. Any chance of another Dyno test very interesting, as you already had it on the scales balance on each axel would have been interesting also. Great work Guys !!!
GRIP from Germany did a dyno test on a M5 CS where it did a stunning 689hp but they only claimed 635hp🤯

Porsche are renowned for understating power and performance figures, but the BMW shocked me! 😮
It’s an interesting comparison; something I’ve seen on a few US based videos, but would like to see more of here in the UK.
Tbf, BMW is just as notorious as Porsche for understating performance figures. It's been well known for years now that they mess with power figures.
BMW was more notorious I thought and they did it for insurance reason or something I thought

one of the best videos, thank you for the info
Great video guys it was a treat putting these cars on the Dyno and seeing who was telling the porkies. But can we all take a second to appreciate the M5 what a car. See you for the next one Matt
is it me who is wrong, or should you not do the dyno in the second highest gear, i.e. 5 gears in a 6-speed. 7 gears in an 8-speed gearbox?
@@andersrasmussen1985 it is you who is wrong :D
@@andersrasmussen1985 it is always done in 4th gear if I'm not mistaken.
@andersrasmussen1985 No it is supposed to be done in the ratio that is 1:1 or as close as possible. Some cars only come close to this ratio especially the auto cars so the HP figures are always off .
This reveals hidden secrets, we need more of this Matthew.
We want a part 3, part 4 and so on… this is simply great!
Very cool video, keep it up!
Did the Dyno also correct for air temperature? Engines make usually more power if the sucked-in air is colder… but maybe the engines are capping the torque anyways so it’s correcting for that.
Very good idea to make a comparison taking into account the weight of the cars as well. I was expecting to see around 650 hp from the M5 Comp! Would really like to see how a stock M8 Competition Gran Coupe compares to a stock M5 Competition LCI in a future video.
I was also expecting around 650 hp, if it's a good one. The German car magazine Sport Auto put it on the Dyno some years ago and the figures said it all. BMW was underrating.
What they might have done is to measure the weakest output number in relation to the marketed number (Audi RS6) and 1) first corrected it with some coefficient to seem like it produced the claimed power (600hp) all along (to avoid reputation damage to any of the manufacturers) and then 2) used the same correction factor (coefficient) for all the other cars as well.
@@exoroxx or even 705bhp actually.
The sound of all 4 cars during the test is amazing and sounds so powerful!
The drivetrain in this AMG has been killing M5 Competitions since 2017 without seeing any major change. This new M5 Comp with more power and a lot less weight can only manage to tie it in the real world. Gotta give credit where it’s due. It truly is “The Best or Nothing”.
Matt always being consistent keep them coming
Keep doing these dyno tests. These are so good🔥🔥🔥
It would be great to have this before each drag race. Especially for the tuned cars you feature. Maybe overlay a graphic of gear ratios for us nerdy car nerds. That would paint a complete picture of why a car drags races the way it does.
Keep up the great work!
Great video Matt. More like this 👍
Nice format, please do this with every car on your reviews 😍
It’s obvious from all the drags that the Audi is the only one brutally honest with their power figures. Every other German brand understates it so no surprises here
This must be the best "race"/competition you guys have done so far. Good job!👌
Fiiiiiinally! Been calling for this for years. Great work Matt!
There seems to be some confusion between manufacturer's claimed power to the crank vs power to the wheels in this vid. However, for direct comparisons sake between the dyno'd cars, doesn't matter so much. Thanks for the vids as always!
Would be fun to see the M5 CS. Some already said it has over 700 hp on the dyno. Would explain a lot...
“Someone said” but i couldn’t find any video of it doing over 700. I think its around there though or 690
@@taliyy_ on the german tv Mathias Malmedie a car enthusiast tested it on the dyno, the M5 CS gets 711hp at the wheels

@@bonifacelukosi9580 Turbo S vs M5 CS is very close in terms of horsepower (and i also want to see how they compare to the Panamera and M5 Competition in this video).
And 765LT vs Senna is the closest comparison to have. They're supposed to have the same torque (800 Nm), but the 765LT should have less horsepower. But every video i see on the 765LT on a dyno it produces 750 horses on the wheels (so much more than 765 on the crank).

Great! Definitely brilliant video! More please!
I like these kinds of videos...definitely do more
11:26 that spoiler though looks stunning
One of the best videos I have ever watched! Quite surprised by how much torque E63S has. Nevertheless, BMW will gain the most from a simple ECU tune. The only concern is that the weight may fluctuate according to the car's extras - panoramic roof, soft close, ventilation, heating, etc.
Definitely need more of these dyno comparisons! I'm a bit skeptical of their calibration of Flywheel HP when reading off of the drive wheel, but seeing the differences is great. When compared to other manufacturers the Germans seem to always underrate their cars. From my testing, I find the RS6 to be around 625hp at the flywheel. But there are so many factors. Were all cars on equal octane fuel? Nonetheless a very cool comparison!
Exactly what I’m wondering. I’m not very familiar with dyno systems, but I know the drivetrain losses would different between AWD/RWD/FWD and other factors like weight of all the drivetrain components affecting whp.
Curious to know how the computer converts back to bhp
Unless they intentionally put lower grade fuel in the tank (not likely) then they'd all be on the same premium gas/petrol.
@@chinqlinq89 There's no universal rule of thumb (that's accurate) for drivetrain loss. Varies depending on transmission, differential, clutch vs planetary gear traditional automatic, etc. etc.
Since it is in Europe it is either octane 95 or 98, so the octane levels aren't that different and probably will not affect the numbers as much. Sometimes you can find 101 but that is a real rarity.
Actually when it's cold out the turbos and timing can be more aggressive. Judging by the jackets it's a bit chilly in the shop 😜
You could see their breath that's how chilly it was.
Probably an equivalent to the temps when going fast
Very interesting. I have always suspected the 992 turbo s and 720s are both in the region of 50-100 hp more than claimed so let's see them soon Matt.
Interesting idea Mat to do this kind of test, hopefully it will motivate the car makers to go the right direction.
The aero dynamics of that Porsche sleek smooth design will help tremendously in those drag races and rolling races
Great idea! Looking forward for more of this type of content!
Always useful to see, every car seems to come out the factory with small variations but some of these increases are crazy, great video!
Its the fuel and the temps. Show I watch here in the states did an engine dyno test of flex fuel sensors. E85, the sensor read it as E78, so it adjusted timing to compensate.

Nice!!! Explains why the Bm's pull like they do!!! 😃
So what you can do next maybe is to investigate hat the difference is on the same sized, twin turbo engines. Is it more boost on the Bmw?? Does the Bm have bigher injectors?? Or what gives it more power??
Differences in wheel weights, from standard sizes to the upscale sizing, packages, interior trim etc all adds up. So any gains you made over the claimed figures can be whipped away because you clicked the 21" wheel vs the 19" wheel. More variables added if you went aftermarket, and a larger size and larger tire
