Excellent. I visited Knossos and Crete over thirty years ago. It was good to revisit it with Bettany. Our tour guide at that time told us that the 'Minoans were very peaceful people' but I didn't believe it. To be as revered as they were in their time, they must have been very, very tough or very, very holy. Bettany's comments about it functioning like a monastery resonates to some degree because I have always seen it as a type of sacred island. I am glad the archaeological knowledge continues to evolve.

    Why tho?
Many great and sophisticated cultures practiced human sacrifice in their religious beliefs.
The Michenean themselves did that too, as well as early post dark age greeks.
The various cultures from the middle east as far as the fertile crescent also practiced these rituals.
The various mesoamerican cultures were highly sophisticated and advanced, but they did that too as we all know.
Thinking that the Minoans would not do It just because of their relatively advanced culture doesn't really mean anything.
They probably also practiced ritual cannibalism of small children, probably to ensure the fertility of their crops or something like that.
The idea of a nice nature goddess Is a very modern invention...
The earth mother was way more chaotic and demanding in the minds of the many religions of the time.
Asking for blood in exchange for the survival of the many seems like a very logical idea for the time if It would satisfy the gods for another year.
The Minoans most likely worshipped a Sun God and a mother goddess as their primary deities.
It's possible, according to some theories, that the minotaur and It's rituals are nothing more than a demonization of the old gods of Creete.
An important creetan figure in greek mithology Is a bronze giant that the Creetans reveared as a sun God, that often appeared as a bronze bull, but Who Is killed by some greek gods or heroes.

The explosion of Santorini seems to have done a number on the Minoans as well, but doesn't seem to be touched upon here except for the mention of the earthquakes that were probably caused by it. It was an economic disaster for the entire Agean.

Kimberly I totally disagree, just like Chariots of the Gods in 1969 (it think it came out). I rea it in the early 1990s (when I discovered I loved ancient history) Even though I disagree with a fair number of what the author said, it would have never sparked, inspired, and created an atmosphere for people like Graham Hancock, whose uttely brilliant book Fingerprint of the Godsm would have never come out. So, even though we later learned the Evan's misinterpretated/misunderstood his findings, he inspired people to want/desire/and need to investigate his findings even more and more throroughly.

@@leenorman853 that is your opinion, and you are entitled to it. I, however, happen to agree with many things that Mr. Hancock has said. Not all of them. Unfortunately, big sweeping generalizations like saying someone is a crank is way too vague and mainstream idealogy to be of much value. Your opinion is noted. I have read several of Mr. Hancock's books and find the ideas, suggestions, and possibilities to be things to be discussed and debated over, and simply swept under the rug, so to speak. I read back (sometime in the early 1990s) the book (I believe) started all the rediscovery in research, "Chariots of the Gods". Even though I disagree with much of the book, the seeds of eye-opening thoughts and possibilities were planted, so that people like Mr. Hancock could write and share his thoughts on expanding them as well. One of the things that I enjoy about Graham's books/docs is that he brings along experts in different scientific fields to either prove or disprove what he is saying. That always leads to interesting discussions as opposed to merely saying somebody is a crank. Again, your statement is your opinion, and you are definitely entitled to it, but I hope at the very least, you might begin the possibility to rethink the statement, and possibly see if you might be somewhat (maybe not entirely) mistaken.

It's not just that it was full of pretty women, but most archaeologists these days conclude women had equal or even higher social standing then men in Minoan society. This is an stark contrast to Mycenaean society which was deeply patriarchal. Just imagine what the Mycenaean must have done when they conquered the island. Not pretty to think about.

The minotaur is a metaphor of the psyche, the labyrinth of the mind and the animalistic tendencies that torture the human (hue=spirit, manas=mind) soul

    • @VeraBousiou
      @VeraBousiou Pƙed 11 měsĂci

He seems closer to the shadow aspect of the psyche, those animalistic tendencies as you mention that we often forget to acknowledge afraid that they may be too revealing, too shocking for us to handle. When Theseus enters the labyrinth he's been aided by Ariadne (also Ariagne, the "purest one"), probably a former goddess that plays the role of his anima. As he confronts the Minotaur (his name was Asterion) Theseus possibly confronts his basic instincts so to become more complete, more human. Karl Kerenyi in one of his great books, sees the labyrinth as some sort of a ritual dance, a labyrinth can be signified in many ways in ancient artifacts, simpler ones, like a spiral or a meander.
