    The new Fantom is missing a lot of functions but there is ways to get around it and get the job done. It is just a shame Roland did not perfect this keyboard before releasing it. I have seen Roland fall out of touch with their customers in the last 10 years but I must admit they do have the killer sounds I just love.

    • @thomascook2535
      @thomascook2535 Před 4 lety

      Very right it is very shame for Roland that they launched Fantom as the beta tester. Not stable, freezing, basic features are missing from the unit and in sequence too and OS is not solid as it should be. Next major firmware upgrade will reveal all, I mean coming this namm January 2020. If the firmware is not good this will definitely affect the sales of Fantom coz no body has a time and patience for beta tester machines.

      Indeed it is. I'm surprised it doesn't have more robust sampling but hey, at least there is something there to work with. I know they've added features to previous models so I guess we'll see what they do.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah I think they will update it, they put some pretty powerful chips in there. I've heard they will be adding the model engines from the Jupiter, so I'd imagine they will probably be updating the sampler/sequencer at some point too. We will see, I am interested to see how it grows but imagine those that really want/use sampling will hold off for now.

      Absolutely not, the fantom is light years in chopping behind the old fantom. they are not created equal. The new one gets a C- compared to the old one. You are forced to sample to pads which is crazy when you could live sample across all the keys and slice the samples as you do it.

    @PierreSIBANARCO Před 3 lety

    Good evening,
    I was very interested in your demonstration concerning the sampling on the Fantom. Thank you so much .
    So I have a few questions to ask you:
    1: Is it possible to sample a scene from the Fantom for 5 to 10 minutes without stopping? (scene including several different sounds, of course!)
    2: If so, will there be enough internal memory for this? (or on a USB stick?)
    3: Then, if I make wrong notes, can I correct them? If yes, how ?
    4: Finally, if this recording mode works, will I be able to export this sample (in fact: a song!) in .wav format on a USB key?
    I am used to creating songs on my synths (Kronos, ..) in 'real time' and improvising without counting the time spent or the number of bars to exceed.
    But with the Fantom, you cannot exceed 32 bars! This is why I would like to know if this sampling mode will allow me to record without time limit or bars.
    Thank you very much in advance for responding to me.
    Ps: I haven't bought the Fantom yet, and your answers will be of great importance to me.
    Kind regards. Pierrot

    If u had to pick one; Kronos, Montage, or Fantom?

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 4 lety +2

      I haven't spent much time with the Kronos so I can't speak on that one. Between Montage and Fantom it depends on how I plan to work. If I'm just using it as a sound source and recording elsewhere (MPC, Maschine, iPad, Live) then I'd probably say Montage right now just due to the flavor of sounds it has. I tend to gravitate more towards the acoustic sounds on there. If I wanted something that I can just sit down and knock out ideas with on it's own, the Fantom's workflow is better. The sequencer is much smooth and the navigation/gui is really easy to navigate which makes it easy to design sounds on. The Montage is a bit more mature so we'll really see what's up after Roland adds a few more updates. I think it can take the crown if they handle it right.

    @ddavidson6708 Před 4 lety

    Thanks for the helpful video. It's worth emphasising: the lack of velocity sensitivity on the pads is a criminal omission for a £2k+ machine. I guess you can assign the zones to keys and then trigger from an external pad controller, but you lose the visual feedback and sadly it's a humiliating workaround for a top of the line workstation. Love the fantom in other respects though.

    How does it compare to the Kronos 2 for recording samples and spread them across the keypad like the Kronos 2 can do.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 4 lety

      I do not have experience with Kronos, but currently Fantom can't record samples to be used as new instruments, it only records to the pads.

    • @SoundsAndGear

      @Geo Leech Yeah the sampler is nothing like that in the Kronos, mainly just a phrase/loop or oneshot thing.

    I must start by saying that I’ve always been and will be a big fan of Roland. Just from looking at this video it kinda seems like Roland is far behind computer programs like maschine Ableton fl ect. Could be because it’s a fairly new product but sampling seems much more easier on my maschine than this. Again I’ve always loved Roland products but they have to step it up. As a producer there are work arounds like you’re showing just takes the creative mind but having to work to hard to chop a sample can kill the vibe

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  Před 4 lety

      I definitely would not consider their sampler to be in the same realm as Maschine, Ableton, MPC, and other dedicated samplers. They could improve it if they want to...but who knows if they will or not hahaha.

    Do you know of any other keyboards that are capable of chopping? The price is kinda steep for the Phantom. If anything a Roland F08 for the 88 keys. Thanks for the vid
