- Cranked Marshall Plexi tones on a budget? This amp seems to divide opinion but is it just misunderstood? After watching some great videos by Leon Todd & Robert Baker of the 50w, I thought it was worth the risk to find out. This is my thoughts and favourite tones from the Marshall Origin 20 head! As requested, I have made some Kemper profiles of this amp. Check it out - czcams.com/video/DEefB-cIRYM/video.html
So basically they gave people what they wanted, an old school Marshall, and people realized they didn’t really want it lol
😂 Seems that way in some cases!
@@DanLeggatt I think it's cause the sound people have in their heads is of a plexi + a great player lol. The great player part is key with any plexi circuit it's very clear and unforgiving also not compressed
@@azzazelo Ha, totally agree. People can't seperate the sound from the player and the gear.
@@azzazelo oh ya scary too at times
@@azzazelo It’s definitely a roast playing this kind of amp. The rewards are there but when you crash, you crash hard 😂
That's the old Marshall sound we all love. In another video I heard a clean sound with a Strat. That was equally impressive.
Absolutely THE best demo of the Origin done to date. Marshall should have used this three years ago when the Origin series was launched. I love my OR20H and it punches way above its weight class. Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks so much Geoff 👍 I can’t wait to give it a run at a gig or jam at some point, whenever we can get back to that kind of thing!
absolutely i just ordered one after hearing that can do van halen
Hands down the best demo I've heard of this amp. Cheers !!
Most kind! Thanks for watching 👍
@@DanLeggatt Incredibly enough, the next day I commented, a Marshall Origin came up locally and I managed to get it in a trade. I can honestly say that your review is on par with what I'm discovering with the amp.
Sadly I can't crank it at home but I quickly discovered how a Marshall style distortion pedal ( in this case a SL Drive) sounds PHENOMENAL with the Origin, even at low bedroom volume.
@@mrdj07 awesome man, congrats on the new amp 👍

What is you Daw
My lovely wife bought me one of these for Christmas. It rocks..the power scaling can't really be demonstrated well on YT. Full power has that room shaking growl...where scaling back is still loud but loses the growl. I love it.
I have the Origin 20 combo. Absolutely love it. It has the Marshall tone I've always wanted, the tone I've always heard in my head.
I have the same combo. I'm getting great early Rush tones out of it. Hemispheres, Moving Pictures are all in there with the MXR Stereo Chorus pedal going into the front.
I got the same combo, replaced the power valves for an EVH EL34 ando it really makes me fell that angry-hot overdrive of the 70s
and the best part is the power tubes will last a long time cuz they run at a lower voltage!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the detailed review. I have watched A LOT of videos on this amp with very little take away, until I watched yours. Please continue with real world, detailed reviews.
Just got this amp and I'm really impressed with the tones for the money. A great addition to my amp collection which I know I'm going to use a lot as I love that old school crunch.
Great, to the point, demo. You nailed it’s features and what it is vs what it’s not. Just got my combo yesterday and I’m absolutely smitten with it!
Awesome mate! I was torn between the head and the combo but the head came up for the right price first. How do you like the speaker in the combo?
Stumbled on this review and really enjoyed it. You basically answered every question I had about the Origin and showed off some great playing and some tasty tones to boot 🎸
Thanks man! Glad it was a helpful video 👍
Hands down the best demo out there! You actually show all of the amps knobs and what they do! Great Demo! Hoping to pair one of these with my 2020 les paul tribute that just arrived! Cheers Owen
Congrats on the new guitar man! I think they will be a great match. Hope you like it loud 😂
Thank you for doing this amplifier the true justice it deserves!!!!
This was a really great demo of this amp! Great tones and awesome explanation of how the Amp operates!
Cheers Chris 👍 thanks for checking it out.
First time watcher and man you are killing it. You bring every ounce out of that amp and guitar. Awesome.
Very kind of you to say man, thanks for watching 👍
Tried my Gretsch through this and got that classic Marshall grit and dirt that I fell in love with from AC/DC. What really got me was how well it cleaned up for a more spanky, Fender-esque jangly clean tone for when I wanted to do some jazz or rockabilly. This was through the MX112R cab, which I believe has the same speaker as the Origin cabs. I loved the sound for sure. I think I found the amp for me.
Thank you Dan for a great, detailed review! Just what I was looking for!
No worries! Thanks for watching 👍
Dan: amazing playing, amazing style, amazing sounds, thanks for the video, it's definitely certain I will buy this amp... I was looking for info and I've really got it!
Thanks for the kind words mate. I hope you enjoy it when you pick one up. Thanks for watching 👍
Agree . This is a SUPERB and thorough demo done with class ! Great player , great sounds , excellent explanations . Made me LOVE the amp ! Can hear it properly here with some really good playing and proper use . Seriously looking for an Origin 50 head . None in stock at the moment . No used ones either . Thanks for the great video , bro ... very well done .
Thank you mate! Very kind of you to take the time to comment. Make sure you have a power attenuator or very understanding neighbours to get that bad boy cranked up! Cheers!
I recently purchased the Or20/Cab combo because the price was unbeatable, it's a Marshall, and the reviews were very favorable!. I'm far from being an expert but I really love this amp! The tilt is a nice along with the presence and gives me a bit wider yet basic sound for my blues and country style. My playing doesn't require more master volume to get where I want so I'm good there. I imagine that this amp with it's matched cab would do great in a live show in a medium to large venue and I guess might sound even better in a stereo set-up. Another plus was that the 4-button foot pedal came with the combo set. I know many of you are more knowledgeable and experienced than I am so it's your comments, reply's, and reviews that assist my decisions so keep sharing knowing that you're comments are being read and thank you! Peace out...
Great video, playing, tips, and demo, Dan. You made the amp sound awesome. Thanks!
Hey Dan that was a really great demo. There was a lot of useful information in there especially as I’m about to buy one of these today. Cheers man looking forward to the next video!
Appreciate it man, thanks 👍
Now that's an accurate clear review and amazing playing
Thank you 👌
Great Review of this amp! Your playing really complimented the amp and vice versa. You answered the questions that bedroom guitarists want to know. Best review of the this amp hands down. Thanks!
Cheers Ryan! Thanks for watching 👍
Nice one, Dan! Great to hear you're enjoying the amp. It's a really good one for sure!
Thank you for an easy transaction and making sure it arrived safely mate! It’s a bit overkill to have and not be gigging it but I’ll definitely give it a good home.
Clear. Concise. Well spoken & explained. Great video editing... damn dude, nice work!
Thanks so much! 🙏
Best review for the origin 20 on CZcams. Well done 👍
This demo convinced me to purchase this amp!
Solid demo brotha, Aloha!!
Hope you enjoy the new amp mate! 🤘
I have the 20C (combo). This amp was a surprise. I cant stop playing it! Perfect Plexi tones. Great review !
Best demo i've seen of an origin! Congrats!
Thank you! I’m loving it so far. Shame there isn’t any gigs at the moment to get it cranked up for real!
Excellent demo of tones, supported by great playing. Just bought the Combo, used, and can't wait til it arrives
So far, this is the BEST VIDEO i 've seen, at last someone that know how to use it and at the same time plays at good level... !!!
Thank you 👍
Best demo of this amp ever 👍🏻 great playing man thanks
Great review!! Especially the Hans Moleman clip. Classic!
Great review Dan, thanks for that ! And great playing as usual.
Thanks!
Some of the best plexi tone I've heard. I've owned a 74 Superlead and currently a 73 Superlead. This thing nails it, based on this demo.
ive had mine about a year now. Got the recommended 2x12 with it. Love it! Great vid too!
Your playing and ear for tone are both top notch! Excellent review; I just picked up an Origin 50h and loving it, myself!!!
Very kind of you to say! Thank you 👍
I have watched this review many times and getting something out of it each time that I missed before. An excellent review with fantastic sound. I'm pretty much set on this head and it's matching cabinet. Thank again.
This was a great demo! I've been looking for an inexpensive backup for my Suhr Badger. You make great points about how Marshalls work in general that I think a lot of people doing demos skip over or just don't know.
I think that sounds awesome!! I been wanting one of these 20 heads for a while now
Recently I’ve thought about heading down that Marshall highway as well. This model popped up on my radar and I definitely am interested in grabbing one. I feel like a lot of the other demos of this amp seemed a bit stale and like they were trying really hard to get a good sound. You’re nailing tone easily.
I’m definitely going to grab one of these and probably just ad a pedal in front to kick it a bit more and get a little modified modern tone mixed into it. Then again when you hit that 9:17 mark, it’s pretty damn close to what I’m wanting! Awesome video!
great review.....first time ive seen an accurate volume comparison....excellent !
Great playing, thoughtful insight and some incredible tones you pulled out of that thing. Would be interested to see what you could get with EQ in the effects loop.
Thank you 👍 I’m considering doing a follow up video featuring more pedals as I keep getting asked about good ways to boost it. If I do it, I’ll chuck an EQ in the loop too 👍
Always good info. I'm thinking on getting this amp. Your great playing goes great with this amp. Keep em coming. Great job on a great little amp. Thanks brother!!!
Thanks so much man 👍
Great demo!!! I recently bought this head, this video helps huge!!
Enjoy the new amp man 👍
Fantastic demo, Dan! 🤘🤘🤘
Cheers! If you ever need a video for other products just drop me a line. Email is in the description box.
Great demo. Just bought one!
Wow, I just re-listened to this using headphones rather than computer speakers. Sounds completely different is a good way. Great playing and demo.
Awesome! I’ve found that phones & laptops can really accentuate some unflattering frequencies for guitar.
Excellent review
Wow! This demo sold me on this thing! Excellent job, sir.
I can totally hear the power amp breakup, not just preamp fizz.
Cheers man! It gets the goods but needs to be played looouud! It’s a shame Marshall aren’t paying me commissions 😂
Metalbasd79, thanks for explaining the poweramp breakup verses tge preamp fizz! Is that why I don't like the DSL amps? God Bless! Rob Ransom
@@1twangmaster Yes, sir! That would be why. If you crank the DSL up, but turn the gain up just below the absolute minimum that you would use and then spike it with am overdrive, you'd probably love it.
@@Metalbass1979 Thank you Brother!
And I heard the JCM 900 50W is alot warmer than the JCM 900 100W...
hands down the best sounds I've heard from an Origin head on youtube... you just made me reconsider my 20 head with your tips ;-)
Cheers! Glad it was helpful
Love the tones you getting from this head, excellent
Thanks, that was an interesting review. Nice playing too btw.
Cheers 👍
You do a great demo and explanation of what this amp is and what it is not.
I have a Jubilee 20w and I’ve spent plenty of time in front of “plexi” Marshalls and this is a great amp for the money.
And since there are a lot of these available used based on many people misunderstanding how to use them, you can score one for a great price.
However, it does divide folks but you’d be hard pressed to find that “Marshall” plexi tone for this money in any amp out there right now. 👍🏻
Still the best demo I've heard of this amp
Great demo! I own the Origin 20C. Absolutely nails that AC/DC If You Want Blood rhythm tone--which is what I was looking for. Even though you were preaching to the choir, you still managed to show me a few new tricks. Thanks! But yeah... That boost is absolute woofy crap. My Catalinbread Naga Viper is insane as a boost! Takes it from Malcolm to Hetfield.
Need to try out treble booster!! Good shout! 👍 Thanks for watching.
@@DanLeggatt Try hitting the boost mode with a treble booster it’s quite magical
what settings do you use?
I actually love the "wooly" vibe from the boost switch. Especially on the neck pickup of my LP when trying to dial in a fuzzed out Hendrix tone or early Cream [ Sunshine of your Love] type of tone. No Fuzz pedal needed. 🤘
Thanks, good demo. Bought it and am very gratefull. Basically the sound through youtube is impossible so I checked the DSL comparisment and went for the origin although I liked the DSL more. But this is just great for anything. Tubes work with this mans setting instructions.
Why did you get the Origin if you liked the DSL more???
Great demo - thanks!!
Thanks for watching 👍
Effing top demo, brother. Dangit might buy this one.
Cracking review dude! Subscribed 🤘
Much appreciated 👍
Very nice review. Excellent point about the need for volume cranked.
Cheers 👍 Thanks for watching.
Excellent review and playing !! Just got one ! The guy didn’t know it had been modded ! I plugged in and was like why is there so much gain it’s not supposed to have that much ! And the effects loop has been disable so I think it’s the Headfirst mod and the push pull is now set to when you pull it out it’s like stock left in it kicks in the gain !! A lot of gain !
Very good demo and comments…. and playing. I bought one partly based on this.
Awesome review!!!!!
The very first Marshall since the JCM's, which I really love! (Opposite to my Silver Jubilee from 1987).
Thanks for the excellent demo. Just beginning Origin 20 research. Love it’s tones and now understand I’ll probably need a Two Notes (+$500 ish) to get what I want out of it at home. Have another couple tube amps that are also tending to justify a Two Notes.
This is without question the best sounding demo of this great amp on YT! I traded my Origin 50 (way too much power, I don't Gig) for the 20 and you're to blame for that! Thank You Dan! Rock-On Bro!
how does the origin 20 work for bedroom playing?
@@soloyoyyo100 I doubt it will sound much quieter. When you double the watts, you only get a 3 decibel increase in sound. Even my 5-watt DSL through a 112 cab is way too loud for home practice really.
@@ukmanthailand In the Low Power mode with Gain and Master at higher levels, it can do Plexi-ish distortion at levels that won't hurt your ears but everyone in the house will still know your playing. Better to turn down the Gain to bedroom level cleans, and use an overdrive or distortion pedal for dirt tones.
For bedroom volumes you need a 1-watt amp (Blackstar, Marshall, etc) or better yet a headphone amp is really what you need, cuz even my 5 watt Black Heart is way too loud for a bedroom, and those in the next room will also enjoy your loud music!
Perfect explanation of how to run these amps. 👍🏻
I bought this amp off the back of this interview and I really like it. Putting a greenback in my cab was borderline essential for this amp though. Took it from searingly bright to classic marshall grind.
Loving this. Bought a 50w recently, and I can attest to the fact that all the nice tones @Dan Leggatt is getting from his 20, I can get from the 50 - albeit insanely loud!
two origin 20 = you can get a bit of volume going if needed but more tonality control
esp if you start using different setting on each head
i dont use the gain though
pedalboard instead
Fantastic! Could you do a bit with an eq with it? Your style of doing these videos is unlike any other youtube demo
Thank you! I’ll see what I can do in a future video. Are you looking to see what an EQ can do boosting the front of the amp?
Superb demo. Superb playing!!!!
Thank you 🙏
Bad assed !!!
Great demo !!!
Thank you
Thanks for watching 👍
Great Demo buddy, been looking at getting another marshall head,I did own a dsl but then got a Orangecrush120pro and micro terror, which I love..So seen one-off these cheap,so may get it,thanks to your great review, cheers buddy 👍 ❤🎸🤟
9:16 Exactly what I thought. Maybe with a little boost in front of the amp, we got that "brown" that all we love. We really got it... Your review helped me, a lot, to my decision. TKS
Great demo Dan . . . I run TSL-100's which can still be quite loud at the reduced "25 watt" setting & this newer Marshall would bring the volume down to acceptable levels for most normal gigs . . . You & I both like the same tones although many gigs I play are "pop music" that use clean tones. I always preferred the tones created by Marriott & Frampton in the original Humble Pie where 50 watt plexi's were used . . . Now the issue is 20 watts or the 50 watt Origin . . . Again appreciate the demo Dan . . . all the best & stay well !!!
Thank you 👍 I think it’s always a compromise when gigging. Always at the mercy of the venue, soundman or band members when it comes to volume 😂 I am still yet to gig this due to the pandemic but hoping to get it out to a jam soon. Thanks for watching.
Mate this is a great review. I'm looking for something to go alongside my Countess that has a bit more grit - but my playing does not compliment Marshall amps at all and have always struggled dialling them in but I am determined to find the right one...
Thanks man! This is a cool amp for sure, I can totally see that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. For the money they go for used I don't think you can go wrong to be honest.
Man this has to be the best most real to life demo I have heard of the origin 20 head! Thank you! I use one as my main amp and have it running through a two notes captor x with an oversized mesa rectifier cab running to front of house, and it runs through a cheap marshall 4x12 for my stage volume.
I do however disagree with the comment on the effects loop. Yes you are driving the power tubes a bit but thay doesn't seem to muddy the time based effects as much as going straight into the front end.
Either way enjoy man! Great choice for an affordable marahall amp
Totally fair call! I think I was probably a bit hard on the loop in this video. I just wanted to make it clear that it wouldn’t behave as people expected it to if it was run like I was doing in the video. But you are right.
Sounds like a cool rig. I’m looking into the Captor X as I’ve still got the original. Some great features on it. Thanks for watching 👍
@@DanLeggatt you should definitely think about the captor x. It's great for silent recording..... though then again of you are running thr regular captor into wall of sound I guess maybe you aren't getting that much more.....
I have the Origin 20 combo and I love it. I'm running it in tandem with a JC40, both clean, driven by my pedalboard. The 20C alone is nice, but the two together blend perfectly for me!
Best review on youtube about this amp. You play that guitar like a GOD.... well done, i admire you!! \m/.
Ah thanks so much for the comment! Really cool of you to say 👊
I'm with you Dan, never liked tube screamers...great in depth review!
We can start a club 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Really great demo and I couldn't agree more about the volume being the most important dial in terms of tone. I've had one for 18 months and got it in a more soundproofed room since December, with an attenuator. Up til then I was annoyed about how little it broke up. Lol. Now my main gripe would be the reverse! Find it hard to get a decent quiet/loud transition cos the cleans break up pretty easy. But the tone is magic. Now if I could just play like you too, that would be great. Ha!
Most kind man! Which attenuator did you go for?
After watching this and the tone i bought one. Very very underated. Running through a two notes capacitor. Dound unbelievable. But Dan i get you on the low level. You have to have this amp cranked WOW. great review
You really made that amp sound great. Best I've heard. Real good player too!
Good job, you actually dialed in a solid plexi tone. When it comes to vintage, single channel amps the "more good" knob is the Volume knob. A lot of classic crunch tones are just clean channels played bone crushingly loud. I've seen a lot of Marshall amp demo's that sound terrible simply because they've got the master volume knob at 3. Oy... It's settled then, I'm gonna need to find a practice space outside of the apartment...
Thank you 👍 I agree with all the points you made. It’s still a very cool amp but I can see how it wouldn’t be ideal for everyone. Thanks for watching!
I always use the volumes in reverse on Marshalls. Master full, preamp low, boost with pedal, EQ in the loop to take care of any unpleasantness, usually cut/boost highs or lows depending on the amp. They sound way better with the power tubes working hard and the pedal takes care of the pre amp. So unless you can crank it on both volumes always set master near full first and use gain or channel volume as the actual volume control.
Hi Dan, some very nice Marshall sounds and great guitar work as always.
It matters not, that you've "never been a Tube Screamer sort of person" you sound great without.
I've never been a Spitty Fuzz sort of person and never lost any sleep over it.
Stay safe and keep producing your great content, I always look forward to your Vids.
Very true! The world would be pretty boring if we all liked the same stuff 😂 As always, really appreciate you watching. How’s lockdown II treating you?
@@DanLeggatt Hi Dan, as you know I am a full time live in carer, so there is almost no going out to protect our health. But I am working through all 8 of my guitars doing set ups changing strings and general maintenance. I am also going through my main performances in the Kemper adding in the bits of your performances that I really love. In other words keeping busy. Stay safe and cheers with your next pint.
Good to hear you are keeping occupied mate. At least you’re putting your spare time to use. I need to do the same to be honest. A few of my guitars are long overdue for a string change! Look after yourself 👍
I got the combo, sounds way better plugged into a 4x12 cab . I love it, cheers
Oh la la, suculento.!! Great tones my friend sounds good
Great review from a credible guy.
Cheers 👍
Great demo! I just put a Marshall Origin 50 combo on lay a way. The easiest way to make this amp an absolute Plexi is get a MXR 10 BAND EQ PEDAL boost the highs and mids, then boost the gain on the pedal a tad bit, that way your amp is still stock, and just use a greenback.
Great advice
Not sure about the Origin but my DSL likes to have the Master volume on full and preamp us3d to control volume and a boost tondrive the preamp plus boost low end and mids slightly with an EQ in the FX loop. Gets a nice Plexi style sound and this amp is way closer to a Plexi so I think this should work well too, volume near max, gain low, booster before the ampnand an EQ. Most effective in the loop, that lets you really shape the sound. The DSL is a bit shrill and fizzy so I cut the highs and boost the low end. Tube screamer up front.
Hey Dan, I have a origin 20 and love it. I also have a SV20 and I run them wet dry. When you start looking for a "proper" Marshall, check out the SV20, I wouldn't call it budget but much more usable than the big brothers. Got mine for $1000 and it has all the sound and feel of an SLP, doesn't push air like a big ine, but I'm not Bonamassa or Ritchie Faulkner so I can't use amps like that anymore. I'm an old plexi player from the 80's and they feel and sound incredible. Maybe you can get Marshall to send you one. I also just traded for the 2525h Jubilee. The whole studio series is great. Wish the had them 25 years ago, my tinnitus wouldn't be so bad. 🤘👹🤘
Great demo! I've got the Origin 50h running through a Marshall 2x12 cab. It's true what you say, it's all about the volume- but this thing is DEFINITELY not safe for bedroom use!. Also I play a wine red Studio Les Paul like yours... I guess I should really get to practicing, eh??
Awesome tone and playing 👌
Cheers Matt! Thanks for watching 👍
Great demo. Thanks.
Cheers 👍
Love my two Origen 50's in stereo with two 4x12's . They love pedals in front and back loop !
You just made me buy a new amp. Should be here in 2 days.
Thanks, I think.
Please apologise to your wallet for me 😂 Hope you dig the new amp.
I have to say, this review is why I bought the Origin 50 head. Thanks Sir!
Sorry to have assisted your gear habit 😂
yeah, me too. I just replaced my DSL401 combo with the 50w version of this head to pair with the 4x12 I also use. The DSL is good but a bit fizzy. This sounds more like the JMP Master model I used to have.
Great playing
I kept hearing people saying it was a good clean pedal platform and harsh gets thrown around, I hear a Marshall, a vintage style Marshall, plenty of gain for that sound when you crank it. Crank it!
Seriously, those plexis were using a ton of power section as he says. Awesome video
