All you OG peeps will remember the PJ days!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with PJ fiddling good sir. Keep on rocking in the PJ's!
Ok I’m not putting on pants either. Going to cut the lawn now
classic!
Rockin my PJs RN.
Hey Robert! So i had a thought. Why do you think people put aftermarket pickups ( Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, Bare Knuckle ect...) On a US made Gibson? Gibson invented the humbucker, so theoretically they should make them better than anyone right? Thoughts?
Hey, you're bringing back the comfy grunge😁😁😁😁
hahaha
Be sure to get your Snuggie° and your box set of Twilight.
@@johnmonroney8614 no that’s for the emos / neo-goths
In my opinion, the Origin is for Marshall what the Tiny Terror was for Orange: A smaller, affordable tube amp that does a nice job of replicating classic tones, even if they're not dead ringers for vintage amps.
Maybe the 1watt one. The 50 is very loud, real Marshall. People who are mad are ones expecting it to be a recreation of an old plexi to the T. Its more like an in between sound of several old Marshall amps. I bet a good eq would get you whichever flavor of classic Marshall you want.
@@richardg5301 I couldn't agree more. Been getting to know the Origin 50h lately and have been really enjoying it.
Hey Robert, I've just signed up for your 8 course bundle and am loving it, the way you teach is very easy to understand and not frustrating as a student, I am so happy that I have subscribed to your course, thanks again Mick :)
I own the Origin 20. You do have to have the footswitch plugged in to use the effects loop, so at least it's not broken. :) .
It has a switching jack in there. There was talk (on the forums when it was released) of getting a jack plug and connecting the contacts correctly so you can plug it in and leave it to do whatever your Freidman switch did. When my warranty runs out I'll be modding it so the loop switches on with the send/return (as well as Plexifying the preamp with a switch to go between stock and mod).
For the early Marshall sound it's awesome. It's not a high gain amp for metal, but there are lots of pedals to make it do that in addition to the sweet vintage sounds it has in bucketloads.
I have the Origin 20 combo. It’s a great amp when you dial it in correct. Takes pedals well
Out of curiosity, isn’t the footswitch cable trs? Or a cable with three little black things? And could you, hypothetically, just plug a trs plug into the input of the footswitch and have it working, or is the footswitch part somehow integral for the loop to work? As in, can you cut up an old foot switch cable and just plug a little bit of the cable into the jack or do you need the switches aswell?
If I had read what you wrote I wouldn't have commented . . .
@@fredchatham6680 i have the 20 combo. fantastic amp. replaced the stock speaker with a green back.
Is it turret board or PCB in there?
Forget the Amp. Give us a review of those pajama pants.
I think I'm gonna start using your intro jams as my practice routine from now on. Always such sick licks!
Am I the only one that loves how the camera mic picks up the sound? That bassier and extra reverb is something I replicate when playing guitar with amp sims, makes it feel like if the amp was there!
Yeah the roomy sound is good, but it's not loud enough to cover the pick hitting the strings.
I use the power amp section of the Origin 50h with a Carvin Legacy drive tube preamp pedal and it sounds great. The presence control on the Origin is active on the power amp end so you have to adjust it to taste. The origin sounds great on its own for clean and semi dirty stuff but with a tube preamp like the Legacy drive the possibilities are endless.
Great video Robert I have the origin 50 and love it has that old Marshall tone going on. Underrated amp in my opinion.
I went with the Fender BassBreaker over the Orgin. I also run synergy modules (plexi, dirty Shirley, BMan) via the FX loop... all through my 2 notes live. Been awhile now and absolutely love it.
Glad you are back and hope you feel better soon!
Thank you! Love the origin Marshal sound and almost sent it back because I couldn’t get the effects loop to work. Merry Christmas to me I get to keep the Origin50!
"All Right Now" by Free is played on a PAF equipped Les Paul !
The great Paul Kossoff played Les Paul exclusively live and recorded !
I have the Origin 20 and keep a 1/8" to 1/4" stereo adapter for headphones or whatever in the footswitch jack. Keeps the loop engaged for reverb and the boost on all the time without having the boost knob pulled out waiting for my clumsy self to hit it and snap it off. Nice and low profile too instead of having a footswitch hanging out of the back of the amp that never gets touched.
Dude thanks for that!
@@RobertBakerGuitar No problem, man. Stereo is the key though cause the tip and ring each control a function. It's been a while so I don't remember exactly what I worked out, but I actually sat there with a multimeter checking continuity and working out how the footswitch worked. Pretty sure it breaks the connection to ground when a function is engaged on the footswitch which is why the adapter works.
@@toneill1225 Ahh yeah i was going to ask if it needed to be TRS or not.
i was going to say the same thing
So when you plug a TRS do you still have control over the boost function or is it fixed to ON?
I have the Origin 50 combo. I love it. Put the pedals in front and crank the master vol. The just crank the gain. You get a killer and full (edge of breakup) sound. A tube screamer/reverb sound great through it!
Gold top on the Origin for me. Thanks for sharing a PJ day where you ain’t “feeling it”. It’s good to know that you pros get the same off days as us mere mortals. Hope you get your mojo back soon!
Its awesome of you guys to give back to your CZcams community. God bless ya'll
Honestly your channel is the best demo of all the gear! I've got an origin and found a mod done by Headfirst Amplification and the versatility of the Origin after the mod is incredible, and is a testament to the value of the amp itself. Highly recommend it. Appreciate you, dude!
The PRS mixed real nice with the Origin!
Origin sounds cool, it has that vintage vibe. A few pedals could take it over the top and it could be used for a lot of styles I think.
Yeah and the Origin takes pedals reallly well.
I found this was one of my favorite videos in a bit! Not boring at all; I love Marshall amps. My origin 50 with a boss ds2 makes my PRS sound like a hot rod. It is a much brighter sounding amp as well, absolutely shreds lead tones. All it needs is a distortion into a wah with maybe a bit of reverb added.
So glad man you revisited the amp! I think this series of Marshall really deserves the attention. I myself flirt with the idea to get this instead of my Randall Rd20 and a Friedman Be-OD, a JHS Little Black box and there goes a rig from Free to serious metal :D
I think most of us tend to forgot how the classic sounds were done by the relative low gain old amps pushed to ten, juicing in a Dallas Rangemaster, and topping it with MXR Dist+ or a Ts, even old MXR Eq's... a road to the classic sounds as Maiden, Judas P. Scoprions etc. Of course there were a bunch of modded amps out there too, so IMHO the Origin is a canvass for a tonal painter, a base to discover and immerse in the pioneers of tone. A platform to experiment and tailor a sound rooted in the past and traditions.
Seller comment!
I couldn't agree more, your description of the series is spot on I think👌
I have the 20 watt head, and the 212 cab (upgraded the speakers). I love it, for 300 bucks I think it sounds fantastic.
I run a 20 watt SC20 (20 watt JCM 800 Studio amp) and an Origin 20 in a stereo/bi-amp rig and man.. I love my SC20 but that Origin in no way sounds worse than the 800. They get SUPER similar sounds when you treat them both as pedal amps and use the low impedance input on the SC20. Great video!
Man....that Strat sounds so good on that setting
Had a PJ today with my guitars and your channel running in the background ALL DAY!! It was a good day....
I just got a second hand Origin 20 combo - and I'm smiling! Goes great along side my katana 50. Both great budget amps.
Got an update on my PRS. Supposed to be here by the end of October. So ready for it to be home. Hope you get to feeling better bro!
Iv been playing through an origin 50h for a while now. Absolutely right about it nailing the old school low gain fast acting sound. I really think the origin series is slept on.
I have the Origin 50 watt as well. You do need to find the footswitch to turn the effects loop on/off. You can manually turn the boost on/off right on the head(by pulling out the gain knob) but you need the footswitch to control the loop. Nothing in footswitch jack=no effects loop.
Wow that's probably the best I've heard a Marshall Origin sound! Seriously I didn't like the sound of those amps until now. Wow I'm really impressed!
As always, awesome video man! And you are getting some serious tone from that Origin 50! P90's on Les Paul really sound great to me! ;-)
I have Origin 50H also and it does get me to that old school 60's and 70's rock ballpark! And also takes an overdrive pedal really well if you need more saturation.
As any amp of this type, the real singing comes from cranking the power amp section so the louder you get it, the better it sounds! ;-)
Same problem with the footswitch for the fx loop to work. I still dig the amp, probably my least used but it has its place. Glad to see you back, CZcams isn't the same without Robert Baker!
I love my Origin 50H. I don't think there's another value like that in the market. A 50-watt all-tube amp for $499 is a great deal.
I think I shoulda got that instead of the DSL 40. I might grab a 20W head
The new mig-50 is on par
Same here. I got mine for $499 with 10 percent off. I love it a year in, great amp, but they go for an insane $749 now.
Amen Bro! Just scored one myself!
I have the origin 20C, and I didn’t like it initially. Then I put a celestion gold 10” in there, and now I love it. You are definitely right about people knocking it because they don’t understand why it doesn’t have much gain. I was aware of that when I got it, and that is something I really like about it. Perfect amp for pedals. Anyways, great vid! Get better!
I watched this video when you first posted it 6 months ago. I came back to it because I'm considering buying the Marshall 50 watt Origin. However....I just noticed the Tom Bukovac Home Schoolin' t-shirt!! I have the green version and it definitely upped my playing. Now I just need to buy the Origin AND some plaid pajama pant and it will definitely take my playing to the next level!
A tear slowly rolls down my cheek as I look at my mandolin and know it will always only be the higher notes, no shred, no vibrato. 😂😕😂
the origins are great sounding amps as far as I can tell from hearing a bunch of demos online.. I might have to dip my feet into the marshall tube amp world! cheers!
The Origin pedal has a switch to turn the effect loop on and off. So you have to have the switch plugged in to use the effects loop.
You don’t need it plugged in to use it!
Switch sold separately?
No the switch comes with the amp
I'm sure you could solder up a dongle for the jack socket, so you dont need to bring along a pedal you're not going to use.
You dont need the pedal plugged in to use the amp but the pedal turns the effects loop on and off and the default without the pedal is off.
I love my Origin. Footswitch must be plugged in for FX loop to work as per manual. Thanks for the review. 🤘🏻
Bad design if you ask me.
Thank you for doing this revisit! It's the one amp on my purchase radar right now.
I like how you’re showing how different guitars sound through the Origin
I just learned to crank the master volume having the gain low and using my guitar’s volume knob. Crazy to think three weeks ago I would adjust the settings on my amp every time I wanted a heavier or more clean sound.
Origin has that classic sound, really nice. I prefer your monster jcm 800! Loved it every since your “I found my dream amp (my poor memory of the title when you showcased that sweet 80’s amp).”
Seems like you have an amazing story for all your gear especially your dream Strat!
The healing powers of reverb.
That’s why people sing in the shower.
I'm probably in the minority here but I think p-90 Les Pauls sound better than the humbucker counterparts for most situations.
But they're soooo noisy..
I absolutely love P90's and I agree! (I know, blasphemy :-D)
I love P90s but they are just too noisy for me and here is the reality...
Really good PAF style humbuckers were developed to sound a lot like a P90 and they absolutely do. A good PAF humbucker will sustain great and have that "airy" and open tone with that snap that is super articulate and great dynamics.
Good, scatter-wound, low output AC2 or AC4 Tonerider humbuckers are the best on the market that I've found and the unusual catch is that they are also affordable.
@@stricknine8623 Get a G-String Decimator pedal for that noise. All the benefits of a noise gate but none of the downsides.
@@tacoconch7678
As I stated in the last paragraph of my comment,..I'm happy with PAF humbuckers.
They sound as good or better than P90s and are relatively quiet.
I know this vid is 2 years old, but thanks for making it. I’ve been thinking about buying this amp for about 2 years now lol. I already have a good amp, but looking to get a Marshall that’s somewhat affordable. Thanks for the info and review!
Oh man you got to check out the sv20h. Super lead dna in a 20w or 5w head.
Love mine ♥
I got a jcm 800 studio classic head
I always love your tones. Sorry for drooling on your gold top
Love the re-reciew idea. Everybody ought to do that
It really does the low gain stuff really well. Best know for use as a pedal platform.
'The healing powers of reverb' - I like that. Hope you're feeling great now, Robert.
Great video. Love the reviews after really dialing it in. What are your setting on the origin now? Sounds great! Thank you
Dude these martshalls come alive when everthing cranked except the tone knobs a presence crank the mids low trebble and bass and you are there ... Pure power ... )
Of all the youtube guitar personalities, your playing has the most soul. Weeeee
He gives up that infectious Paul Gilbert energy.
@@joebruley4117 I think he just sounds like Robert Baker tbh
He’s up there, Chris buck, Rhett shull, mathew scott are also really good
Regarding the Free stuff, none of early Free was played on a Strat (first three records). All Right Now was recorded with Kossoff playing his stripped finish '59 Les Paul Standard, as was the entire Fire and Water record that song appears on. Koss didn't start getting into Strats until Highway (1971) was recorded and released, but he is by far better known for being primarily a Les Paul guy due to his many '58-'59 sunburst Les Pauls, which he played the vast majority of the time (he owned at least four of them throughout his life).
Man I love gold top les pauls!❤
Thanks my brother. I was at the situation until now you open my eyes 👀 on my Origin 50 🙏🏻👍🏻
Ftswifch issue is recognized indeed.
I have worked out a fix for it. (Installed an on off switch on the back of the amp)
It's just a matter of the ground for the loop has to be lifted by something inserted in the ftswitch socket.
I have diagrams on The Marshall Forum, we now have a schematic out there for these amps. I have installed a PPIMV on mine, the loop switch, and I tried a gain mod (fyi, Friedman is now doing a gain mod to the Origin series)
But I didn't care for it, took it back out, will go back to the drawing board with that....
For now, I'm just running a line 6 desktop modeller, with an 800 sim, into the loop. I can flick the switch for it, or leave it on and turn down the gain.
;-)
PJ Party days!!! Being on Zoom all day I can relate!! Marshall has such a history, and their sounds are classic.
I have both the Origin 20H and the DSL 20H, and they are definitely voiced differently. I always run an Analog Man modded Tube Screamer TS9 in front of the Origin. That gives it the extra gain I want. That said, I do find myself preferring (& playing) the DSL more often. Having both is definitely nice though.
I've heard the distortion of old marshalls described as clean distortion. I believe it's because the type of distortion is clipping. One of the nicest sounding amps I've played through was on old 50W half stack.
The lick was from Mississippi Queen. And the origin manual does state the pedal needs to be terminated to the loop switch for the fx loop to work. U can just get a TRS jack (with no cable in it) and stuff it in there and leave it. Loop will always work then.
I think the Origin dimed would be sublime for rhythm and then engage boost for solos. It really is that sound that I'm wanting.
Where do you generally run the Gain?
Hello,
Just plug a jack/min jack adapter into the switch input and you’ll have boost and loop always on.
Info plus lots of fun. Thanks!
I have the origin 20 and yes you have to have the foot switch plugged in for the effects loop to work. I thibknits just the way the relay is wired it needs that signal. Downside to having the switchable effects loop. I dont mind it too much though because I tend to use my foot switch for the boost, using a pedal for my overdrive.
Hell yeah, man! If you’re down an out playing guitar and writing some songs is the best remedy!
Friendly note, you need to have the Amp Pedal hooked up to get the full gain juice engaged. Yes, you can pull up the gain button without it, but it's only a fraction of what's on tap
Thats very kind of you putting that piece of information out for all the Origin owners, thank you very much man !!!
Love your videos, Robert. I'm running the Origin 50 into a 1960 4x12 and saving up for a Captor X so I can crank that master volume. Without that you just can't get that tone you're getting right there. Even on the lowest wattage setting I can only get the master to 2 before it blows my head off and it just doesn't sound good, kinda muddy and not even close to the gain you're getting. I gave up on it after I first got it and just used it as a pedal platform (which it's great at) and after a few months I decided to experiment with hitting the front end to push it into overdrive. When I first got it I went with my go to which is a Boss SD-1 but I really wanted to be able to roll back the guitar's volume to get a nice clean, then open up for tear your head off, which is what I've been after for a long time. The SD-1 is great at getting it into overdrive (tear your head off) but it sucked as far as cleaning up, the SD-1 just wouldn't clean up enough for a usable clean tone. Fast forward several months and I decided to experiment and holy shit, using the Paisley side of my Wampler Dual Fusion set as a boost with drive all the way down and the volume at 3 o'clock (almost wide open) and then into an eq pedal with just the gain boosted for an extra push and voila! Very early VH sounding result and cleans up pristine! I still need that Captor X so I can get that master cranked but to anyone in my shoes try boosting it with different drives and see what happens. Oh and use a volume pedal before it hits your fx return so you can tame that volume cause she's a loud one! Cheers!
I know your comment is 8 months old, but i have the origin 20 into a 4x12, and it allows me to crank the master all the way up. Grant it, its loud, but id say its about as loud as i play with my band. Maybe you should just get the 20? Ive been debating getting the 50,but your comment makes me think I should just stay at the 20.Curious if you still have it and what ur thoughts are.
@@Boogieplex Yeah I not only still have it, but it's my main amp atm. Got a Peavey 6505 and 3120 for the metal stuff but I was always going for that sorta brown sound thing that would completely clean up rolling off the guitar's volume and then go full shred when all the way up. I finally nailed it and I'll tell ya how but first the volume issue. So I ended up getting a Two Notes Captor thinking I'd be able to crank it on 50 watts and be fine. Wrong! haha Yeah the -20db helps but on 50 watts I can still only get the master at two for maximum living room volume haha. This thing is LOUD! Any louder and It wouldn't work but it barely squeaks by. I'm not in a band atm but when and if I join another band, this beast will have no problems being heard. Now to my trick... So for my main sound I'm running into the Euphoria side of my Wampler Dual Fusion with the gain pretty low at 9:30ish and the volume at noon, then into a Fender Engager boost with the volume at 100%, then hitting the Marshall which also has its' gain at 100%. That right there can give me sparkling beautiful clean to AC/DC & Van Halen rhythm tones and when I need just a hair more for lead I engage the built-in boost on the Marshall. Truth is, I usually leave the boost on because it STILL cleans up to a sparkling clean with the guitars volume, just gotta turn it down a little bit more is all. I also have a coil tap on my guitar so if I want a really sparkly single coil tone it's all in there. Oh and my last trick is I run a Morley Bad Horsie with about 15db outta 20db set on its boost for when I need total sustain on any given note, a la a Dimebag harmonic squeal that I want to never end for example. Need to use the wah clean for like a Voodoo Chile intro? Just turn the boost off on the Morley and you're all set. Oh and for the metal I run a Revv G3 going into a Deci-Mate noise suppressor into a Boss EQ200 for all out devastation. Huge pedalboard with the Boss ES8 switcher controlling everything. Hope this helps!
Hope you’re on the mend soon. Let the music heal ya bro. BTW...Got me a pair of the plaid PJs too.
I have a DSl40 Combo, JC800 2205 Head and Origin 50 Head. The Origin is great.
Honestly this thing has all the gain I need. I crank the master and everything but the tilt and gain. I only use the gain knob at 1:00 max, get a sound similar to Robert's. It does have a bite that is different from my Super Lead or JTM50, the bite is characteristic to the Origin and is awesome with my Tele. My Super Lead is almost too much gain, this thing is just right. I just am really satisfied with it, a ton of great cleans as well.
I've always been a Peavy for home/small venues and a Vox guy for larger venue amps, perhaps I need to look harder at Marshall.
Always enjoy the channel. PJs in the control room is cool cause we all do it. Picked up the 20 and enjoying it. Like it with LP. Plus cathode biased so no repair guy. Tried my 1959slp reissue with a Two Note, drops the db but just not the same.
Love that gold top!
10:30 I think it's from Mississippi Queen man 😉
Hey Robert, I would just like to ask how you're running your 800, I'm thinking about getting a jmp master volume, and I know that internally, they are practically the same amp, so I'd just like to know your thoughts on the volume, and if it would be nessicary to run a power attenuator or not, keeping in mind, Id like to know how you get your tones from the 800, thanks in advance!
no attenuator required. crank the mids and you're good.
Hi Robert. I love your videos. I'm pretty sure I've only ever seen video of Paul Kossoff (Free) playing 'All Right Now' on a Les Paul.
Always love how you play and your tone Robert! nd you're a good guy most importantly.
I think I'm understanding you correctly I tried one at Guitar Center where I work, and loved it especially with pedals. Dude, the tone with my old Rockman X100! But I didn't think it had reverb?
You're saying just plugging in the foot switch activates a built in reverb? There's nothing on the description of the amp and effects loop just means adding your external effects. I am confused,Lol.
Thanks and GOD Bless!

@@darthhotdog9990 SNOWFLAKES.
I have a Marshall Origin 50 combo amp. As much as I love it, there are 2 setbacks. The first is that you need, as Robert pointed out, the pedal to enable the effects loop. When that's enabled, the boost knob does not do anything! The second thing is that it's not the best pedal platform for overdrive pedals. Just my thoughts, but running it as is sounds pretty darn good for the price.
I almost bought one of the Origin 20s but I don't have the option of cranking the master up! It is a bit spiky and bright if you leave the tilt switch a certain way, try have a play with the tilt switch :)
I loved the sound of the Origin, but i heard of a lot of reliability issues which is the opposite of what im looking for :) but it was definitely looking good for a while!!
edit: it has an attenuator lol my bad
its got a built in attenuator. the 20 watt goes down to .5 watts
@@seanbrooks2583 Oh yes it does, I forgot :)
Your '63 Strat sounds sooo good!
My blackstar is like that in a way. I wanted to play my axe fx through the fx loop (just using the power amp section) with the guitar hooked up to the input of the axe fx but no sound came out when I had it hooked up right. I even took it with me to my local music store and found out u need to have a jack in the input even tho I was plugged into my axe fxs input. I plugged in a 1/4-1/8 adapter (nothing else) into the input of the blackstar and everything worked. Didn’t make much sense but similar experience
Killer video. Convinced me pull the trigger on the 50H .what 2x12 can would you suggest ? Without busting the bank.?
There’s some really great mods for the Origin amps. Worth checking out I think
Could be a switched FX jack, try plugging a plug end (without a cord or pedal) and that MAY let the fx loop happen.
I’ve done that an it works very well.
Loving that Mississippi Queen lick at 10:30
Marshall origin goes to 1960's and the sound is just that original Marshall sound. Not the JVM heavy distortion! Some like it but you have to crank the master volume up to make it really shine. I would go for the JCM DSL days!!! Amazing video btw!
Effin A brother. Get well soon! Gibson Goldtone, same story with the pedal and effects loop.
Feel better bro!
That esquire sounded tasty to my ears 👌
4:30 there’s a fun trick re: the reverb problem you might be able to plug a stereo cable into the foot switch jack and tape some little bit of metal between the tip and shaft or the ring and shaft on the other end. That’s kind of what the foot switch is doing too :) ymmv and you are on your own if you try it but hey ... it might work for you. Good luck
In this instance, you dont need the 'piece of metal', just a plain TRS plug will work.
The trouble is the ring leg of the jack socket goes to ground with nothing plugged in, plug the jack in and it lifts the leg off ground, then the switch connects it to ground, or not. :-)
Love the Origin 50 so much I bought two of them.
Yes the pjs! And I have a print 20h and love it!
I NEED a little reverb! I think every amp should have some kind of reverb. If there's no on bord reverb the Boss Fender reverb is a must in my guitar room. 👍😎
Oh Robert, the origin 50 that I got it came with a foodswitch. It can turn on the gain boost and the fx-loop. Hope you didn't threw it away with the package:0!
I do like the vintage vibe sounds you’re getting.
I have the Origin 20 head and the foot switch has a boost switch and the FX loop on and off switch on it so yeah I would think you need something plugged in to activate the FX loop. I love the Origin amp they sound great and for the price are fantastic value. Folks need to understand that old Marshalls didn't have lots of gain and these are based on the Original Marshals, clue is in the name "Origin" as in Original lol
