- A4 Union Of South Africa heads to Plymouth on what's likely it's last visit to Devon before it's retirement next year. Before any bowing out, it's next task was to traverse the Devon Banks and the conditions were far from ideal, with damp, drizzly and heavy rain all playing a part throughout the day, especially on it's departure of Plymouth Station.
The day starts off at a damp Whiteball, where we capture the A4 on approach to the tunnel and out of the tunnel at the summit. After a few pathing stops we witness No9 rounding the reverse curves on Tigley, and amazingly just under a mile further up the line we see the loco battling through stormy conditions as she closes in on Tigley and Rattery summit. Not a great result, but some you win and some you lose.
After a lengthy layover in Plymouth, we capture the A4 sitting in the platform next to her modern day counterpart. Then just over 90 minutes later we see and hear 'Union Of South Africa' slipping her way out of the station as the loco tries to come to grips with the arduous 1/77 & 1/72 climb to Mutley Tunnel. It had just started to drizzle prior to departure which made adhesion a real issue, so with the sanders working overtime the driver steadily brings the loco out of Plymouth. The whole scene was in excess of five minutes, but I have trimmed it down to show you the most dramatic parts !
To finish the day off, it felt more than right that we saw this greyhound doing what she was designed for, so Tiverton Parkway was the venue for some classic A4 sprinting and chiming as number nine storms through the station on the long climb to Whiteball Tunnel ! This wrapped up the day nicely, hopefully We can capture her sometime next year before she's resigned to the history books !
I hope you enjoy =) - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Love the juxtaposition of the two loco front aerodynamic profiles at Plymouth. They are near identical but one is 80 years newer.. Gresley wasnt far wrong was he?
Fantastic shot there mate especially seeing 60009 Heading For Plymouth
Fantastic footage, thank you for sharing all your work,
Alan
What a fabulous shot through the curves there!
Excellent footage! Terrific sound from the A4! What a performance! Hope she will be overhauled again at some point.
I hope they're wrong about the permanent retire of April 2019....
He needs to be with Bittern and Nigel Gresley....
Just love those no9s at the end
Greatly enjoyed, thanks Liam and Phil. I thought the Rattery sequence was superb for its sheer atmospheric quality, the Plymouth departure was memorable for the element of drama as well as the driver's skill and the Tiverton Parkway "dash" was glorious. Kind regards, Bob.
Great video
Excellent viewing. It was a pleasure meeting you at Whiteball Tunnel ... Happy Trails
Beautiful video
Very great video with Union Of South Africa :)
Can't beat an A4 at speed! :-) The shot in the station was nice too ;-)
Superb :)
A fantastic day filming Liam and Phil . Great selection of locations. Well worth the effort in some testing conditions.very enjoyable watching. Kind regards C&A
Beautiful shots of 60009 storming through Tiverton Parkway with the wonderful A4 whistle, will we ever see her again?
10+++!
i see her to-day (5/12/18) in wymondham station in norfolk, she just looked so good.
I love watching Union of South Africa. Why is she being retired?
Because the boiler ticket expires next year and the owner is not getting any younger. He wants to enjoy the A4 and his K4 in the comfort of his own home, or rather within the grounds of his farm.
There wasn't a diesel from Plymouth to Exeter, but they must have picked it up there? Point of that?
On the way down to Plymouth, the diesel shadowed the train as far as Newton Abbot, before staying there in case 'Number Nine' got into difficulties. With the train safely returned as far as Exeter, the diesel was coupled - presumably - to save a separate light-engine path back up to Bristol.
