  • In this video we pay tribute to the all but retired LNER A4, Union Of South Africa. There were unofficial plans to have one final run at the end of March or in April but a certain worldwide epidemic put an end to that and for now the whole steam preservation industry has come to a grinding halt !
So, for the this video I have compiled our top 10 moments from a list of nearly 40 captured videos of the A4 spanning over eight years. Locations, excursions and the year all feature in the video and I have listed 'Below' the reasons for our Top 10 !
I hope you enjoy the video !
#10 No9 passes through Helsby Station which has been nearly fully preserved, the signals, signal box and long blasts of it's whistle made this a firm favourite for us !
#9 Stamford Station, another well looked after railway station with the lovely the preserved addition of it's footbridge and tunnel approach is comfortably a firm favourite for us, I was tempted to place this higher up !
#8 This was our final sighting of No9 on it's now confirmed last mainline run. We had just finished filming 70000 Britannia and we attempted to cross to the over side of Derbyshire to catch the A4 and we only just made it with minutes to spare and thanks to some late running this wouldn't of been possible !
#7 Lichfield Trent Valley, this was the station I would visit when I was a child, where I would spend time watching the Inter City's fly through and sometimes stop, so the chance to see No9 sweeping through a childhood haunt of mine stays high on my list !
#6 A fireman's acknowledgment, The A4 is seen passing Besford at speed where the the fireman gives me a little blast on the whistle to say 'hello' a nice touch and one I'll remember fondly !
#5 My first video of No9 ! 60009 approaches Sandbach station on a warm summers morning having just returned from overhaul. The whistle was definitely put to good use and this was my first ever sighting of this locomotive and what an introduction, the lack of video quality and camera control kept this out of my top three !
#4 Sapperton Bank aka the Golden Valley, Union makes mince meat of the heavily graded Sapperton Bank as no9 glides up the tight twisting curves of the Golden Valley, who says A4's were only capable of high speed ?
#3 Beck Hole, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, The A4 recovers from a 10mph restriction on the 1/49 to Goathland Station and the locomotive is opened up nicely with the engine in fine voice and great close up memory for me !
#2 A4 Doppler effect ! On a cold December night Tiverton Parkway played host to a fantastic passage as No9 came speeding through the station with it's whistle held open and luckily our first camera picks up the iconic 'Doppler Effect' where the sound of whistle passes by and then away, always a fantastic experience'
#1 An A4 at speed with it's modern day counterpart ! Union Of South Africa powers along the West Coast Mainline through Tamworth with a present day Pendolino train hot on it's tail at 125mph, eventually the A4 is caught up but in our eyes there's only one winner !

I first copped 60009 at Gateshead in October 1964 on Silver jubilee requiem ,been a trainspotter for previous 5 years, I then needed one more A4 to complete the class, the illusive 60004 Sir William whitelaw was the bane of my trainspotting days ,now 71!

Marvoulous vid of number 9. The most popular loco on the mainline over the years even at 1 point even more popular than Scotsman.
Shame though the farewell trip of number 9 on the mainline won't happen now as the 28th's Winter CME could have been it's last if Railway Touring Co had convinced West Coast to let number 9 have a farewell send off in the northern fells.
Anyway great video as ever. Richard

A lovely tribute to UoSA, thanks Liam and Phil, and very imaginatively presented. All brilliant captures, Lichfield TV came over as special and the Tamworth finale could not have benefitted from better timing with both cameras. Kind regards, Bob.
p.s. Thanks for explaining the Doppler Effect - I knew the term but now I know what it means too!

Many thanks Bob, the doppler effect is always high on list when it comes to expectations, unfortunately it's all down to luck and timing.

There are some compilation videos of mine on my channel, but none of them are anywhere near as exciting as this. If I had a favourite No. 9 moment out of all the A4 videos I've seen on CZcams, it would be where No. 9 uncannily stalled on Goodrington Bank on the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway. She was lucky help was at hand in the shape of 7827 Lydham Manor, who is a much smaller GWR 4-6-0 Tender Engine. Despite slipping somewhat heavily, Lydham Manor put up a valiant fight and got the train going. OK, Lydham Manor is a lot smaller than No. 9, but never knock a Great Western Engine's efforts I say.

Brilliant engine i wander if any of the other A4s will take her place on the main line once she has been retired, Sir Nigel Greasley or Bittern Perhaps. Great video 😀
