- Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by former Sky Sports News broadcaster Bianca Westwood, TalkTV contributor Esther Krakue and associate editor of the Mirror Kevin Maguire to discuss and debate the Sports Personality Of The Year Award being presented to England Lionesses' goalkeeper Mary Earps and whether she deserves she accolade after failing to win any major trophies for club or country this season, compared to the other nominees who had won major honours in their respective sports.
Piers believes that the other nominees, such as Rory McIlroy, who led his team to the Ryder Cup victory this year, should have been voted ahead of Mary because she failed to win anything major. Bianca then points to all the individual accolades Mary won this year including the Golden Gloves in the WSL and World Cup and explains that she has dominated in her field on the pitch as well as her contributions off it.

Its Sports personality award , the award is about not only what she achieved in the last 12 months but how the public has taken towards Earps, When Dina Asher-Smith won the award I thought she deserved it because she had a great year and her personality shown over other athletes that year, its also about media coverage as well.

Bianca Westwood's voice is so annoying. I remember the argument with Joey Barton about working hard to get where she is. Is it really that hard to watch a game of football and tell people what's happened, how could we cope without these people.

Mary Earp helped England to lose the World Cup. She wasn't good enough in the critical final match. So why did she get this award? There are so many better players who deserve it more.
My big issue with this is that the woman who finished third actually won her second world championship on the back of recovering from a career ending injury. So it's not that there aren't women worthy of the title, more that it should change it's name to personality of the year as the chances are that the bulk of the public votes were cast based on whose name they know because of the mainstream and social media rather than their sporting accomplishments.

I’m shocked that Lucy Charles Barclay wasn’t even on the shortlist. She was a deserved winner of the award as she won the world Ironman triathlon championship which she lead from start to finish over 8 hours of swimming cycling and running. BBC should be ashamed for not even considering her when they have a goalkeeper who didn’t win anything.
I think it’s the BBC’s fault for not throwing this open to a wider range of sports in the nomination list,including golf and snooker, which were criminally overlooked. The public voted for Mary Earps based on the BBC’s shortlist so don’t blame her if the public voted for her. SPOTY has always been controversial.

I don't know if she should have won over the others, but it's unfair to say she hasn't won anything. Being a World Cup finalist is an achievement in itself; in the Olympics, they call them silver medal winners.

First of all, they are different categories of the same sport. But it doesn't matter, and I don't think you got my point, my friend. Being the runner-up in ANY sport on the world stage is a great achievemet, and she had a lot to do with it. They are also the current European champions. If the men's team had reached the final and had lost to Argentina, I'm sure all the English fans would have been heartbroken, but I think they still would have considered it a successful campaign.
Personally, I think her winning the award was politically motivated, and probably someone else should have won it. However, my objection is when Piers undervalues her achievements and all but calls her a loser. I think she's a great athlete, but there were more deserving candidates.

When you take away all the bluster and nonsense surrounding women's football, it's really just a low level minority sport played by very few people.

I get participation medals for little kids starting any sport (if you’re smaller it’s harder, see; trans women in sports) but for HSers give the winners a trophy and tell the losers good game bc “everyone wins” isn’t how life works out, it seems.
