  • Review to the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of DUNE PART TWO. Only a 4K disc in this pack but the steelbook version did include the Blu-ray. All the extra features are contained within the 4K disc so there shouldn't ever be a requirement for the Blu-ray assuming you have the requisite 4K disc player.
    Sound is Dolby Atmos with an option for 5.1. Image aspect ratio is 2.40:1 throughout and not the 1.90:1 plus about an hour of 1.43:1 as seen in faux IMAX theatres and genuine IMAX theatres where 15/70 blow up prints were screened (only 12 prints worldwide).

    It’s incredible how you built that masking John and I bet saved a fortune. I make do with a 16 x 9 and I’m happy with that. The amazing thing is projector users don’t get close to actually what is on these 4k discs in terms of brightness. I still wouldn’t swap movie watching for a tv instead of my projector though. Great video as always John !

      We've been watching a lot of LaserDiscs on our telly lately which is not something we've done for many years. I concluded that we weren't watching enough of our home videos or home movies so revisiting our treasured LD collection via the television seemed like a solution and it has been. I would much prefer to project them but I think I've got to get the ten foot roll down screen installed in the living room to facilitate that otherwise we'll be in the cinema every evening and it wouldn't feel so special then.
      Masking doesn't have to be automated, it's just that I tend to get a bit lazy when I'm watching a movie so pressing a few buttons and not getting off my backside appeals to me. I have done the masking manually in the past and I will do again in the living room when I finally get around to all that.
      John.

    I had the good fortune of catching this wonderful film at the BFI IMAX in early April on holiday in London, and was very impressed. I’m really looking forward to dipping into this 4K release; if it’s anything like the first film, I’m sure it will be a top 10 4K studio release for 2024. Thanks, John, as always for the great content.

      Evening Joe. Well the 4K isn't quite that good but it is very much like the first movie so if you like the way that looks on 4K then you'll like this one. There are much better 4K discs out there though and I hope many more will come along. Maybe now he's had a blockbuster Mr. Villeneuve will have the power to demand 15/65 for the third film if he gets to make it. That would mean another full genuine IMAX film to choose from the next time you're over and can get to the BFI IMAX. They are showing a lot more 15/70 there nowadays as it's bringing in the audiences.

      There were only 12 IMAX prints made so you did well there. They were blow-ups though so it wasn't the real McCoy but still special to see a video looking just like a real film should. I didn't think Japan had a single IMAX house left now though so that's an education. John.

      If Bradford manage to get hold of the 15/70 print for a few screenings it would still be worth getting in there to see it Mike. There isn't much difference from the home video other than the aspect ratio shifting between 1.90:1 and 1.43:1 but where there is a big difference is the huge screen. No doubt the sound system is going to be a new installation so that should make this movie even more special too.

    Thanks for your always great review and your love of the Cinemascope aspect ratio. The Chinese Theatre in nearby Hollywood has a screen the same width, I believe as the BFI. Their screen is considered the new IMAX cinema standard of 1.90 if I am not mistaken.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 14 dny

      I believe the Chinese Theatre has motorized masking on that huge screen which is quite an achievement. I bet that's going to cost in annual maintenance. The benefit of framing a film with masking cannot be overstated so it's a shame few cinemas in general bother with it any longer. I expect that's an indication of how viable cinema is these days though.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 8 dny +1

      It's all done with curtain motors Michael apart from the bottom mask which now gets pushed up and pulled down by a pair of linear actuator motors. Those linear motors have their own remote control as I couldn't work out how to put them on the X10 controller. I've done quite a few videos all about the home cinema but probably best to look for the previous home cinema video about 3.5 years ago when we lived in Cornwall. 2.5 years ago we moved here and so I had videos with the old cinema being taken apart and then the new one being worked out. About a year ago I uploaded a video of this one with Davey the builder in so we could finally get it the way we wanted it. The bottom mask ended up being about 11 feet across and so it was too heavy for a curtain motor to power the roller blind any longer and that's why some lateral thinking was required.

      That 'Last Night In Soho' poster is probably my favourite of all time. Because it's double sided and has the title in lettering reproducing the appearance of a neon sign the lightbox really does make it look neon. It's lovely to just have it on in there by itself when the room is dark.

      I tell you what Matt, if you thought this film was cinematic event at the BFI IMAX then you have got to get over to see one of the genuine IMAX films because DUNE PART TWO doesn't come close. INTERSTELLAR is the ultimate trip to experience at the BFI IMAX but TENET is probably the supreme image quality with DUNKIRK up there with it. OPPENHEIMER was another event but being a drama it doesn't quite have the same huge screen appeal of Mr. Nolan's previous three IMAX films. They are all great though. I haven't seen the pair of DARK KNIGHT films there but I think I know they'll be the same unimaginable quality. The BFI IMAX is one cinema that makes it worth emigrating!

    I bought the 4k bluray and watched it at home. I couldn’t find time to see it at the theatre. Initially I was a little mad that the bluray doesn’t have the IMAX aspect ratios, but man did I disappear into this movie! Which I think is a sign of a great movie.

      That certainly is a sign of something Jeremy. I've had it quite often myself where I can't get a film or movie out of my head. I think having a load of aspect ratio shifts on this disc would adversely affect the overall enjoyment. It just doesn't have the superlative quality of a cine to video transfer that started out as a genuine 15/65 IMAX shoot. That makes a difference because the last three Nolan films shift from the exceptional imagery of standard 70mm and then the unbelievable even better imagery of 15/70. It can be quite breathtaking on a big (ish) screen even considering it's all shrunk down to just 4K home video.

      It would be interesting to find out exactly how the 15/70 blow-up prints were done. If the video was output at 6.5K then the 15/70 prints would have been higher quality than the 4K videos shown everywhere else. But I somehow doubt that was done and I expect the whole thing was edited at 4K. I hope I'm wrong. 4K isn't quite up to full frame 35mm capability so big budget production like this really should have part of the funding reserved for at least a partial inclusion of film to give us at least a section of superior quality somewhere withing the total running time.

      I was in a discussion with a couple of other film collector enthusiasts a couple of weekends ago Graham where we show and talk about a D-150 lens (Dimension-150). We think this is the solution to cinema today. It was a TODD-AO creation in the early 1960's I think but it never seemed to fully take off. I suspect this was due to the almost identical Cinerama process having almost run its course by the 1970's. But the Odeon Marble Arch had D-150 and Star Wars opened there in the format on Boxing Day 1977. The lens creates a 120 degree curved image in focus all the way over for a 120 degree curved screen - a huge 120 degree curved screen where space allows. Mainly used for 70mm but can be used with any method of projection where the image comes out dead straight and not all up and down like most home video projectors today.
      If D-150 was adopted by cinemas today then we'd almost get back to the sort of special presentations we used to enjoy and it would only be available in cinemas except in very rare instances where someone had a lot of money and space to do it at home. It wouldn't be restricted to 70mm but it would hark back to those great days and would be cheap to install which is fundamental these days. Something different, better and cheap. Seems like the saviour of cinema around the world to me.

      The IMAX films are blow-ups so they're not really IMAX but a good way to turn a video into more of a film and it certainly worked in that regard. But at around 1/15th the quality of a genuine 15/70 (i.e. shot 15/65) there's no comparison at all so what you've seen on your 4K discs isn't too far off. Nothing beats a big screen though and the genuine IMAX houses are always huge screens. It makes a difference. The BFI IMAX sound system helps too.

    got to see this one in dual laser at the Austin Bullock Museum and it looked spectacular. What I've gathered from people who saw it in both 15/70 and in dual laser is that dual laser was the better experience of the 2. I just wish they had preserved even the IMAX 1.90:1 aspect ratio on the home release, as the entirety of the film is in a mix of 1.90:1 and 1.43:1

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 13 dny

      It is only a 4K video so it's quite possible there is something to the 4K video projection in faux IMAX cinemas but what a blow-up and transfer to 15/70 films brings to the table is special because it turns an obvious video into a film. For film connoisseurs that is something that cannot be matched and I hope more videos are transferred to film to give them the artistic look only film can provide. Video projection has improved over the years though, no doubt about that. The IMAX branded 4K projector with laser lamp at the BFI IMAX is capable of producing exceptional results dependent on the material being put through it. The trailer for FURIOSA looked great as did the latest PLANET OF THE APES movie the previous week which I got a sneak peak at but none of it comes close to the real McCoy. I'm not sure this latest DUNE film benefits from the aspect ratio shifting. It certainly doesn't benefit anything like a genuine IMAX film but let's hope Mr. Villeneuve now has the clout to insist on shooting some of the third film (assuming he gets to make it) with 15/65 genuiine IMAX. What a difference that could make.

      @@moviecollector5920 I’m all in favor of more movies being printed to film, especially if it keeps the 15/70 projectors alive and well. I’ll be attending not only the re screening of Interstellar in the fall, but I’ll make sure to buy an opening night ticket to see the new Joker movie on IMAX film as well to ensure my dollar goes towards supporting the format.
      As far as the aspect ratio shifting for Dune, if I hadn’t known about the expanding ratio of it before hand, I don’t think I would’ve felt like I’m missing as much. With part 1 I watched it for the first time at home, and it seemed fine, but was able to catch a re screening in laser IMAX just before part 2 released, and I felt that most of the expanded ratio shots really helped with the scale, which is something DV does very well as it is.
      Some of the shots in part 2 that are expanded though are strangely placed however, and vice verse for shots that remained 1.90 as opposed to 1.43 in GT venues. And even the home release isn’t 100% consistent with which shots are simple top and bottom crops vs left and right or total pan/scan. It’s a technically puzzling DCP/home release of a movie, but the important thing is that the movie itself still kicked ass every time I watched it.
      Nevertheless, Here’s to hoping more films get shot on, printed to, and screened on IMAX film!

I can't imagine doing a home cinema without masking the image off correctly. I used to simply put up with white areas of the screen visible on our ten foot roll down about 30 years ago but then I realized side masking could be manually inserted into the roll and held in place so that sorted that. I want to put that screen back up in our living room which will almost completely duplicate the home cinema we had in our living room in London until about 20 years ago. Should be fun to see it recreated.

      It's a load of Butler Curtain Motors (now known as 'Add-A-Motor' I think) controlled via an X10 home automation system. They make a heck of a noise so I took that down in this video so they wouldn't distract but it's only really the curtains that are too loud as each runs off an individual motor and they're a big weight to drag across. The top mask is on a roller blind but with the same curtain motor. The bottom mask is too cumbersome and heavy for the curtain motor solution so is now driven up and down by a pair of 4 inch linear actuator motors with its own bespoke remote control. I've included all this in videos previously so look up 'Home Cinema Tour 2023' which has most of it but I hadn't worked out the bottom mask by then. The red lights are also on the X10 and plugged into an X10 light dimmer receiver. I hope all this makes some sense.

    YES!!! I completely agree about the darkness in Dune. I picked up the 3D Blu-Ray initially and I couldn't see anything for much of the film. The sandworm scene was by far the worst though. I tried it on my 3D projector, a 3D TV, even a VR headset but I couldn't find a way to watch it so I could see what was going on. I gave up on that and purchased the 4K disc and although it's better, I still feel as though it's too dark overall. It's a great transfer but I just wish it was brighter by default.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 8 dny +1

      It's a digital video movie Steven so there wouldn't have been a transfer, just a conversion for each digital format from the original 4K master file. There was a very healthy conversation in the comments to my review of Dune (which was early in 2022) and that did confirm that all our systems are different. I've adjusted every possible permutation on my systems and nothing ever fully rectifies the sandworm sequence. I'd forgotten there was a post production attempt to turn this into a 3D movie which certainly wouldn't have done the dense sequences any favours. I watched 3D abomination of the Blade Runner sequel a couple of weeks ago and that too was awful. It seems Denis Villeneuve has previous form on making his videos just that little bit too dark. The 4K of that one isn't brilliant either but it does have periods of very good image quality. The funny thing is that when the 4K of DUNE first appeared people were telling me it was the best 4K they'd ever seen. Wishful thinking I think which is how some people are when they really like a movie.

And I have to agree, I think I preferred the scope version as well. I‘m sure part of why it left such an impression on me was the Atmos mix it was accompanied by, which very well might have been the best mix I‘ve heard in a long time. But the framing in 2.40 just felt a lot more precise and, weirdly, more epic. I‘m usually a massive fan of 1.43 IMAX but in this case it didn’t really do much for me. Interesting to hear you‘ve had a similar experience. Quite surprising considering the unprecedented fan campaign for an IMAX home release.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 15 dny

      I think a big part of the reason why I prefer the 2.40:1 is because this wasn't a genuine IMAX and therefore the image quality was not a match for a true 15/65 shot IMAX film. It's not that it's bad but I feel the full frame anamorphic 35mm blow-up sequences of INTERSTELLAR look better on that huge IMAX screen. Perhaps that's just because it's a better cinema film and it's affected my judgement but film does have a more cinematic look in general so I could be right. It will be good if Denis Villeneuve takes the plunge with a third DUNE film and includes 15/70 sequences. What a difference that could make to the overall feel of the whole series. It would put it in the top league a la Nolan.

    I agree with you on the need to understand the story line before watching Dune 2. I was lucky to be able to catch the first Dune when re-released just prior to Dune 2 … so got to see both on the same Odeon IMAX in Cardiff (a cinema I recommend for quality, comfort and friendliness).
    With my fond memories of the books, I was swept into the other-worldliness you describe … and loved both films. However, the friend I saw the 1st movie with was unimpressed. We agreed that we both struggled to follow the dialogue and, unless you knew what was happening, it could drag in places. Too much whispering of lines accompanied by the strong general sound field. I had no such problems with Dune 2 and thought it a superior production as a result.
    The saddest part is the wait for part 3 😢.
    Whilst I love the IMAX experience, in my mind, it is simply not realistic to reproduce it in the home environment. As a result, for home viewing, I prefer the full widescreen format, to the point that I prefer a film be masked accordingly over its full length … I don’t get on with versions that chop between formats. I think you got it spot on when you refer to the magic of a trip to the cinema back in the day … when you were suddenly presented with a panoramic cornucopia of images that were not available on older TVs at home and rarely used in normal photography.
    Thank you for your review … I found it considered and thought-provoking. 🤔

      Thank you David. I find the genuine IMAX films work with the aspect ratio shifts but best when seen in a genuine IMAX house and we'll soon have a fourth one of those as Bradford is going to re-open and apparently will install the IMAX GT. What you are seeing in Cardiff is what I call a 'faux IMAX' because it can't actually screen IMAX and all you're seeing is a 4K (at best) video projection. This is around 1/15th the quality of the real McCoy so should not be confused. DUNE PART TWO might have had a dozen 15/70 prints struck but it was all shot on video so it's what is known as a blow-up. It worked very well but it's nothing like the genuine article. This meant there was limited benefit to the aspect ratio shift into 1.43:1. Hopefully Mr. Villeneuve will be able to insist on shooting some 15/65 to add so much to the third film assuming he can make it. I do think I prefer the 'Scope frame in general but this one really seemed to make the case for it. Cinema needs to get back to huge, deeply curved wide screens to entice people back in. If at all possible, I'd greatly apprecaite getting your take on Ridley Scott's "The Last Duel" on 4K. I was drawn in by the film, but I wasn't blown away by the 4K picture, especially given that it was shot at 4.5K like most of Dune 2 here (I could be wrong but that's what Ive heard). Not to disrepect the craftmanship, mind you, the picture is refined and the colours are natural - it's just perhaps not as sharp as I'd expected. Now, the sound, that's another story altogether - top notch stuff!
    Overall, it's a great package with the writing, direction and performances being some of the best we've seen in a Scott film for quite some time in my estimation. Additionally, the 4K comes with a blu ray and has a nice length making-of documentary that you might apprecaite.

You'll find all the technical details here: www.imdb.com/title/tt4244994/technical/?ref_=tt_spec_sm where you will see it is only 4.5K so not up to 35mm capability but possibly the most important thing to note may be the use of vintage Panavision lenses. Knowing Mr. Scott these would have been selected to give the final production the look of an older production of this type. Coincidentally, I've been re-acquainting myself with Ridley Scott's Alien via the special edition LaserDisc release around 1992 which had a double sided extras disc which I think is the ultimate extras disc on this film anyone could ever want. It's a lesson in film making but possibly producing so many great films so early on as a film maker put a millstone around his neck so it will be wonderful to see another classy production from 2021 to rank among his best works. I expect it failed at the box office owing to the Covid-19 fiasco. So many good films suffered similarly.

      The Alien LaserDisc extras disc is like nothing else but it's the sort of example that led to DVD and all the extra features we've come to expect ever since. It all started with LaserDisc. I've not seen another LD quite like this one though. There are others but this is so extensive and gives a more detailed and accurate insight into the film than anything else. Most of the disc has to be stepped through one frame at a time to read the information until you reach an instruction on screen to press Play and then an interview section of behind the scenes sequence appears. LD handled single frame step through perfectly. It's such a shame home video has never been quite so easy since then. We've had this special set for 30 years in September. Where does the time go?

      That Laser Disc of yours sounds bloody marvelous, John. Indeed, it's these kind of singularly fantastic releases that make you want to invest in a format, just so you can experience them at home. Last Duel, whilst probably not up there with the likes of Alien, certainly deserved a beefier physical release.
      Something that you mentioned in the video that stuck out to me - the ambition behind a film - which is so important to big pictures like this one. I feel that Last Duel has that feeling about it, too. The story, which has incredibly high stakes, is carefully arranged in order to get the most out of the run time, which makes it feel quite pacey in comparison to other historical films of this sort. Scott has imbued the world with a sense of visceral realism (as he is known for). As well, the story is told in a way that respects the audience, with beautiful frames throughout - vintage Scott.

    Greetings from Santiago de Chile. "Dune Part 2" is brilliant and if the third film stays in these same level we would have another perfect trilogy in our collections. About the disc and the extras. Yesterday the american youtuber
    Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader nearly destroy the 4K release of "Once Upon a Time in the West" released by Paramount. Of all his arguments against this edition the only one I support is that long movies should be release with none compression. For example, "Lawrence of Arabia" in 2 disc and men it looks great. Unfortunately the budgets for extras are every day smaller and, so instead studios should use this space for video and audio. And "Dune Part 2" is one that deserves this treatment. Adiós Amigo.

      I haven't seen the 4K disc of Once Upon A Time In The West but I've seen frame grabs from it and it does look very good. If I didn't already have the Blu-ray I'd buy it but it's not one I'm ready to watch again just yet. If there are compression artifacts destroying the image quality elsewhere then I would expect them to be minor distractions at best. A few reviewers like to complain because moaning reviews tend to generate far more views so always make up your own mind. I do believe it's a dual layer 66Gb 4K so it is amazing that it looks as good as it does. These are all home videos though so I'm probably not being as critical as some because they hardly cost anything compared to what we used to have to pay for the best available quality. In real terms it's got to be around 1/30th of the cost. Now that is amazing.

      I expected they would have done. It does mean that the 'Scope ratio has everything important within it and probably why it comes across best to me in that ratio. If it had have been a 15/70 production then the added frame height would have enhanced the overall movie but alas... I do expect those 1.43:1 sections were the 6.5K though which would explain the obvious improvement in image quality on occasion but not enough when compared to a genuine IMAX film.

    Hi John, have you seen 4K Lawrence of Arabia? I don't recall you ever mentioning it, or giving it a review? It is absolutely astonishing: a true reference disc, just like watching it in 70mm for the first time! It's worth the high investment. I saw it originally in 70mm at the OLS, then at the Metropole, Victoria, at a 70mm screening at the Dominion and then the 70mm extended revival in the late 80s at the much-missed Odeon, Marble Arch. I think it's the best 4K transfer ever! Sorry to gone about it, but it certainly exceeded my expectations, and I thought the standard Blu-ray couldn't be improved upon! Cheers.

      I have the Blu-ray Stan but I wasn't particularly impressed with it. I should take another look now you've said that you thought it couldn't be improved upon as it's likely I was mistaken when I watched it years ago. I have tried to purchase the 4K but sadly it's just about impossible to get hold of without shelling out a lot of money and I'm not that anxious to see it again yet.
      As for it being one of the best transfers don't forget that very 70mm format origination you know so well having seen it in multiple cinemas in the real McCoy. The 70mm productions and all the other large film formats do result in the greatest 4K discs so it's not the transfer that is responsible for the superlative imagery it's the original shoot and the film format used. Because of the bright sunlight throughout so much of the film and the 65mm shoot Lawrence of Arabia should be one of the best 4K discs on the market. It would be interesting to compare a 4K home video disc to an unfaded original 70mm print on a huge cinema screen somewhere. I think we all know which would come out on top though.

He came up to something like a well with a friend standing in it and I remember that the fluid within was dissolving him. I think it was that film that contained a scene with someone being executed by having a sword held blunt side down above his head, then the sword was turned over and brought down into the man's skull. Horrible to see at about 9 years old. Lovely film.

    I still haven’t purchased part 1 yet, I think I may just wait and eventually pick them both up in future offers or on the second hand market. I enjoyed them, but I didn’t love them, there was a feeling of the movies being stripped away, especially of elements like the guild navigators which expand the scale of the universe in which it’s set (hoping we’ll see the universe expanded in pt 3 which is expected to be called Messiah after the second book). I actually have Arrow’s 4k release of David Lynch’s 1984 version, which I grew up watching a lot, and though it’s got a lot of things in it which don’t work exactly, there are many things I felt that, especially compared to pt 1, it managed to do better in some ways, or at the very least included where Villneuve has left them out altogether (like the aforementioned guild navigators).
    But what REALLY makes my reconsider buying pt 2 especially is the lack of an expanded edition released for pt 2. I didn’t see pt 1 in Imax so no idea if the imax had an expanded ratio, but i did see pt 2 in imax, and it was a gorgeous movie, with many expanded sequences, and it’s just such a shame this hasn’t been included on the home release (I’m still holding out for the expanded ratio of the Tom Cruise movie Oblivion which was expanded to 1.85:1 including a LOT of beautiful effects, for pretty much the whole movie in imax from a 2.35:1 aspect), and not including these versions on even the 4k disc is a crime against cinema IMO.
    I’m also put off slightly from the price of a new release with them only including the 4k disc and not the blu ray version (which I believe IS included with it in other countries). I love watching in 4k, but I watch things in other rooms too or in bed and don’t have 4k setup in all rooms, so for the price tag I feel that i’m getting a better deal. I don’t for that kind of price with just the single 4k disc. It gives me pause for buying it, and waiting for it to be included in an offer, or wait to see if the imax version was released in other countries to be able to import (as has happened before with some movies)..
    Andrew.

      I understand what you're saying Andrew but I feel that the 2.40:1 'Scope frame suits this film better. If it had have been a genuine IMAX then it would have come with unparalleled image quality but it doesn't so somehow the aspect ratio shifting at home would be a distraction. There were times on the 15/70 blow-up where it looked markedly superior to the 1.90:1 sequences but nothing like we enjoy with a genuine IMAX film. Let's face it, it's not IMAX, it's a faux IMAX to try to pass it off as something it's not to keep the faux IMAX cinemas in business.

      @@moviecollector5920 true - for a lot of things I actually prefer the wide aspect over the imax one, but when there’s something visually shot for such a large scale I feel let down that they didn’t include that expanded ratio shot - and dune pt 2 has a LOT of wide sweeping views of desert, and places like the crowds inside the fremen seiches, where the wider aspect gives an even greater sense of scale. That and the stripped down packaging to a single 4k disc where pt 1 was released with the blu ray included too makes it feel just disrespectful to the audience. The treatment makes it feel like they put out a disc because they had to and not because they wanted to. Like they didn’t care about the presentation. Why go to the lengths to create such a perfect visual and then give it such a shoddy treatment? Like throwing the scraps under the table for a dog. It makes me wonder if there is plan for a better release down the line with aims of that other studio past time… double dipping.

      @@ahdvd The steelbook would have been a better option for this one but it sold out long before the day of release so that was the end of that for many of us. There are increasing releases coming out at £25 with only the 4K in the pack now. I don't think there is much need to a Blu-ray if the extra features have been applied to the 4K as we'd only ever need the Blu-ray if the 4K fails. Most of us anyway because I know some people like the option of watching the film in multiple rooms where some have a standard Blu-ray player. As a child or a youngster I'd have probably enjoyed messing around like that too. I don't think this film benefits from the taller aspect ratio. It did in the IMAX but it would have been a bit of a distraction for no good reason in our little home cinema. I don't feel the same way with TENET, that's for certain.

    I got this on release day as I have the first and I'm a fan of Dune and especially the Director.
    But I understand some things are expensive these days.
    BUT I must disagree £24.99 is NOT expensive.
    My Part one was £24.99, Nope and Blade Runner and Widows were all £24.99.
    When a UHD is released it's ( £24.99 ) and Blu ray is £14.99 while DVD is £9.99.
    Those are RRP.
    Yes wait Three months and HMV will throw it in a two for £30, 🤔 or maybe not as it depends on sales.
    Oppenheimer hasn't really come down and if Dune continues to sell it will stay at £24.99 or maybe £19.99 like Oppenheimer which has been out ages.
    I love the cinema but don't go much these days ( Transport and mobility issues ), but I support physical media and will never use a Torrent or watch Films at 720 on CZcams.
    Anyway " the price is the price " and I don't know what the big deal with NO blu ray is ???.
    Don't think I ever use the blu rays.
    In the USA they are $30-$32 and while I haven't got out my exchange rate calculator I imagine that's close to £25.
    Sometimes I buy the HMV first Editions for nice packaging, 4 post cards and a booklet for £30 although the Blade Runner 2049 was spectacular.
    To conclude I think it comes down to if it's worth £25 to you ?🤔.
    For me YES, but I still haven't bought Oppenheimer and that was £24.99 , I will but blu ray or 4K ?? , each to their own but I'm not a big biopic fan and I did The Manhattan project at College so Not like I'm oblivious to the subject matter.
    IMHO £24.99 was a decent buy ,YES maybe pricey But it's the standard RRP for a 4k on release.
    Thanks as always John 👍✌️

      I agree with all you've said Rikaard but others do tell me they think £25 for just a 4K disc is expensive and I can understand that. When you think my recent purchase of ONE FROM THE HEART was £27 but it contained two 4K discs and then the same again on two Blu-ray discs then that does begin to look like exceptional value compared to this latest DUNE release. I am happy to pay the asking price for something I want but I do think the steelbook looks to have been better value despite being a tenner more. I should have pre-ordered it so there's a lesson for me.

      I'm pretty sure I prefer the 2.40:1 aspect ratio for this. I think the reason TENET, DUNKIRK and the other best releases that have shifting aspect ratios work so well on the 4K format is because they started out with the ultimate image quality only provided by 15/70. Neither of the DUNE films have that benefit. When you have films that look as good as the Nolan genuine IMAX films you don't have to like them to enjoy them with them looking so incredibly good. I do hope Denis Villeneuve is able to incorporate genuine IMAX in the third film if and when he gets to make it. What a difference that would make to the enjoyment.
