  • From the critically acclaimed film, Dune 2. The Emperor arrives with his army of Sardaukar soldiers who are legendary for their skill in combat. The Emperor's allies House Harkonnen under the leadership of the Baron and Feyd also arrive to fight the Fremen. Little does the Emperor or the Harkonnens know that Paul has combined the forces of Northern and Southern Arrakis who believe that Paul is the Lisan Al-Gaib, the messiah who will lead the Fremen to paradise

      They also look like their first instinct is to stand their ground even against the worms, and they hesitate for a few moments - until it dawns on them their deaths wouldn't even slow the worms down - before running. Which, to my mind, shows these are really dedicated and ballsy fighters. They are touted as being a superbly trained and disciplined infantry force, and they _do_ show it repeatedly, including here. But that doesn't change that they are 'just' infantry, they've been taken by surprise, and they are being charged by a... er... mega-worm-cavalry?.... which they can't even scratch, backed by a force of ready-to-die fanatics that outnumbers them. Even great discipline has limits, and their training would, in this situation, have told them that running and trying to survive - and maybe selling their lives in some actually meaningful way later - was in fact the best thing they could do.

    • @scionofdorn9101
      @scionofdorn9101 Před měsícem

      @@grizzlyunicorn76Indeed, but the gullets of full-grown sand worms are basically massive blast furnaces that evaporate the water and dilute it with sand and mineral content. More to the point, it’s a matter of toxicity, volume vs scale, a handful of humans are not toxic enough (not enough water volume) to kill a massive adult or elder worm. Juvenile sand worms are killed to harvest the Water of Life by fully submerging them, so there’s definitely a breakpoint point where water becomes toxic at a high enough volume. Tossing an adult worm in an ocean, for instance, would surely kill it.
      For instance, WE eat many things that at high enough doses would be toxic to us, but at low doses we don’t even notice, or just get an upset stomach if we’re particularly sensitive to something. For instance, two teaspoons of nutmeg can be hazardous to a human, but less than that is just a common nutty flavored spice. Too much cinnamon can be toxic as well (ironic since Spice is said to smell and taste a bit like cinnamon).
      Taking a couple acetaminophen won’t harm you and can relieve pain. Take too much in one day or one dose, and you can suffer serious, even fatal, liver damage.
      So yeah, might be some worms with upset stomachs after the battle, but few if any fatalities.
      Funny though that the Fremen ride their gods to the point of exhaustion, poison and kill their young for a ritual toxin, and micro-dose them with water using them as weapons. Not the nicest ways to worship your godly avatars. 😆

    That standard bearer (the man carrying the flag) must have felt truly blessed going into Arakeen like that. Think about it: he is carrying the banner of the Lisan al Giab, a hawk motif (hawks being one of the only non-Arakkis lifeforms that can survive there), following the man who trained Mua'duib how to fight! If that wasn't enough, he was there when Gurney Halleck fought and easily defeated the Beast Rabban in single combat! If that standard banner were a Southerner that moment might have been the dream of his ancestors and here he is, fulfilling that dream of freeing Arakkis under the watchful eye of the Lisan al Giab.

    2:41 The irony of the Sardaukar is that they're absolutely the elite... in conventional warfare.
    Conventional warfare in Dune requires shields and close combat weaponry, with the killing blow being slowed down to pierce the shield. Shields can't be used on Arrakis due to the worms being drawn to them. Thus, these experts in shielded melee combat are completely incapable of dealing with foes who are used to unshielded combat in the desert.
    This is why the Emperor had to be lured to Arrakis: On their home ground where they could use standard tactics, the Sardaukar would win, just like when they stormed the Atreides estate. It was only by bringing them out in the desert where all of their advantages were neutralized could the Fremen win. Striking where your enemy is weakest and you are strongest is the most fundamental principles of strategic warfare, and Paul was taught very well by his mentors.

    • @hbleblanc205
      @hbleblanc205 Před 4 dny

      That to me makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is how the Galactic Jihad takes place. Wouldn’t everyone else just use shields when they’re not on Arrakis? And wouldn’t they all be better at it than the Fremen because they’ve trained with it?

    • @NATIK001
      @NATIK001 Před 4 dny +4

      @@hbleblanc205 Paul trained the Fremen in shield combat, and the Weirding Way.
      In the books it's made very clear that the Sardaukar are THE elite soldiers, only the Bene Gesserit and some top tier trade single noble fighters can match them among the forces of the empire. However it is also made clear that the Fremen are their match even before they learn Bene Gesserit and shield fighting techniques from Paul and Jessica, after that nobody can stand against them.
      Has to be said, behind the shield wall you can actually use shields as worms can't go there, however a shield is totally worthless in the open desert. Notice that we saw plenty of shield fighting in Dune 1 by House Atreides, House Harkonnen and Sardaukar troops on Arrakis, but always behind the shield wall.
      In the book it is explained that the true reason shields failed/meant nothing during this battle is because Paul timed it to coincide with a massive sandstorm. The sand particles in the storm shorted out all shields on the field of battle, and leveled the playing field. The storm also took out the shield around the Imperial Palace which the Emperor had shipped to the planet as a show of power in the book, allowing them to enter it and threaten his court and life.

      Paul wasn't there. Notice that his location changed drastically during the launch, and the explosion. Another instance is he walked before the charging army when he was supposed to be at the mountain far away with Stilgar. It is a movie expression describing his prescience power of "being everywhere at once", as described by the Bene Genesit.
