The thing about Frollo that makes him legitimately stand out from other Disney villains is how _realistic_ his particular brand of evil is. No magic, no exaggerated character traits, no fantastical situation to give him power over other, just a corrupt political figure who abuses his position to get away with prejudice, child abuse and sexual harassment. Even other "realistic" villains, like Gaston, are at least cartoonishly evil and exaggerated, Frollo doesn't even have that. He is terrifying because he is plausible and a type of villain that fully exists in the real world.

    • @jeffreygao3956

Let’s not forget murder. 🥺He killed Quasi’s mother because he thought what she had in her hands was stolen merchandise, when it was actually a baby.
Which always made me wonder ........why she didn’t just show them the baby instead of running? She could have just revealed it was a child and not stolen items, like they were accusing her of.
But also, ......they really couldn’t tell it was a child in her hands? I mean, you don’t hold items in your hands the same way you hold an infant.
      So many questions. 🤷🏽‍♀️

When people believe they have the moral high ground, and believe they have the support of the masses, they tend to do/say some of the most heinous things and still believe themselves to be righteous.
The sad thing is, a person's moral compass, is fluid, and is usually shaped by what they can get away with, and how much they can expect to lose, if they're unable to get away with it. That's kinda what makes his character so scary, because it's not some "cartoony" evil, evil that we can confidently say "I would never do that/it will never happen" , but a possible manifestation, of a any single person, that has that kinda social standing.

Very few people are willing to buck the status quo, especially if there are consequences for doing so. You can see a detailed analysis of such in Ordinary Men, which illustrates why so few Germans stood up against the Nazis. Specifically a unit of 1500 men based in Hamburg, which was one of the least pro-Nazi places in Germany. Only 12 men from that unit wouldn't carry out the Final Solution. More than 99% of the unit participated in the atrocities; they may not have necessarily agreed with the cruelty, but they fell in line anyway.
It's a very dark aspect of human nature. Most people will take the path of least resistance, the path that others are taking. Most people are followers because it's easier and less likely to put them in danger.

This is my second favorite Disney Animated Canon film after Beauty and the Beast. There's a lot I could praise this film for that many others already have.
I will actually say I legitimately enjoy the Gargoyles too for what they are and feel they are often unfairly maligned. I like their characters, I like their designs, and I like what they bring to the story thematically. The only criticism of them that I totally agree with is that, in execution, they are not integrated as well as they could have been and contibute many (though not all) of the instances of tonal whiplash that keep this movie from being technically perfect (though I honestly would barely change a thing if I had the chance; I love this movie as it is).
Also, as much as the Romantic in me wishes Quasi and Esmeralda ended up together, in the end it does send a better message that - unlike Frollo - Quasi respects Esmeralda's autonomy and personhood enough to accept HER choices even if he wants her. A romantic relationship should never be a "prize to be won" as another Disney Princess rightly put it.

I think one of the best/worst things about this is it is one of the few disney films in which the general public is shown as being cruel. It's realistic but Frollo is evil and realistic but he only held social power. His power came from society. He let it continue but he didn't tie quasi down and attack him. The way society treated "outcasts" is the ultimate villain of the film, Frollo's more like the henchman. Lets also not forget the Priest's reaction to frollo trying to murder a baby was to give him custody of the baby, allow him to isolate and abuse him, etc. The villain of this story is society as a whole.

Frollo wanted Esmeralda just like Gaston wanted Belle & Frollo taught that the world is cruel like Mother Gothel

There was a musical theatre workshop of this where they changed the story to fit much more closely to the original book. They have the same songs plus more composed for the show. It never made it to Broadway because of the number of singers they demanded to have in the choir. The OCR is on Spotify. Gold text on a deep red background. If you loved the movie, I cannot recommend it enough.

Esmeralda is so beautiful, warm hearted, also very brave and independent. I like that you said ”troublemaker” and mentioned Dylan. He should watch this movie🤣 Frollo always gave me the creeps as a kid. I used to have a pillow in front of my face when Frollo was on the screen cause I was so scared. I also love your reaction when she spat in his face😄 cause you said she should do that so it’s just wonderful because she does spit in his face.

I saw this in the cinema when it first came out, i was about 8 years old and i am physically disabled, i have scoliosis which curves my spine and i had never seen a disney depiction with a disabled person before so seeing quasi in this was kind of nice but also utterly broke my heart. i was of course terrified of frollo but i was too young to understand why. it was only until i was in my 20s and going forward that it was the whole religious righteous thing and the inficide and basic idea of total genocide of a whole culture thing, ya know, the biggies!

Since I haven’t seen anyone comment these two thing I’ll add them in:
First a lot of people wonder why Esmarelda didn’t end up with Quasi and I’ve heard it like this
Frollo saw her in lust and like a demon, as some one less than him, you can see this in his song,
Quasimodo saw her as an Angel, someone on a pedi stool and greater than him, he idolised her and you can also see this in his song too.
Phobias was the only one who saw her as an equal as a human. So that is why she ended up with him.
Secondly a lot of people have a theory that the gargoyles are within Quasimodo’s mind and they don’t actually exist.
I didn’t explain the first one as well as other people have but thought I may as well put it out there!

So... while I feel for Quasimodo in terms of Esmerelda not being in love with him, I appreciate his ability to take no for an answer SO MUCH. Like, yeah... rejection hurts. We've all been there. But he gets sad for a while, gets it out in a sad song and a good cry, and then accepts her decision and respects it. You just don't see that in movies, especially in the 90s. 90s movies are so full of the "nice guy" trope and send the message that "no" means "keep trying. Stalk her and make embarrassing grand gestures until no becomes yes," and it's a horrible message. So I love that Quasimodo is a great example of a GENUINE nice guy and not a toxic "nice guy" who treats respect and common decency as transactions for romance/affection. Just putting that out there.

He just did as he was told because that's his job and also Frollo is a very powerful man, so... But he does care about people and would never hurt people who are innocent for no reason.
