    • @harufo

      The alternative to exponential growth is running a steady business and paying out the profits (with the US withholding tax being what it is) by stock buybacks, but people seem to dislike that even more.

    I don't know why anyone is surprised by this. If a messaging service is not end-to-end encrypted, I think you can reasonably assume they're scanning your messages.

    • @Alina_the_Hedgehog
      @Alina_the_Hedgehog Před měsícem

      I agree, although E2E-encryption isn't everything needed for a privacy-friendly messaging service. Privacy is a matter of how much you trust the provider.
      As an example, WhatsApp can still view their users' contact lists, everything is stores on servers owned by the provider instead of only the users' phones, and metadata isn't encrypted. Needing a phone number bears a risk as well, as you need to trust people to not give your number to other people without asking you first.
      Then there is the saying: "If something doesn't money, _you_ are the product". Financing a service through ads is basically selling user data. I'd rather pay for a service with, for instance, the price of a coffee upfront, to download an app (totally didn't steal that from the Threema 10-year-anniversary vid). The more transparent the financing is, the more trustworthy is a service's privacy.

    Tinder started doing mandatory photo-verification, for which you have to do a certain pose, like holding your hand up next to your face or whatever. - I get that they want to prevent spam and AI and whatever, but I didn't really want to do it. - So what I did, is do it anyway, but flip them off in the pictures. - I got banned, but at least I know someone over there got triggered. And we also know that they're doing it manually, because someone took offense, which an algorithm wouldn't do. - In any case, good riddance. It might be the biggest and well-known, but as often the case, it's not nearly the best.

      Tinder and Grinder are great ways to find people to blackmail if you're an Intel agency. They would set one up and see all kinds of important people on there. Pass them a folder one day with all that info in it. Ask them "Now do you want your wife and everyone to find out? Or will you do as you're told?" So many people get caught up like this it is unbelievable. You would think they wouldn't act that way but power corrupts some people. Cheating on the spouse is the least of the info they have. If you've ever wonder why powerful people make such foolish decisions running a company or government then there's your answer. Doing as they are told by their handlers.

  • @HaakonHawk

    It's not explicitly mentioned in this clip. But I want to clarify that one of the most common motives for stock buybacks is that it is an alternative to regular dividends.
    *Instead* of paying out $1 per share to shareholders, they buy back stock for the equivalent amount, which results in the share price increasing with roughly $1.
    The key difference is that dividends triggers income tax for private individuals, while buybacks do not. Giving each individual shareholder the choice as to whether they want to realize their gains or not. If they'd rather have that money in cash and pay taxes on them, they can sell 1% of their shares after the buyback and it would effectively be the same as if they received it as a dividend.

    • @thewhitefalcon8539
      @thewhitefalcon8539 Před měsícem +2

      The key difference is that stock buybacks are a ponzi scheme. There get to be less shares which makes the value more volatile.

    • @NickGhale
      @NickGhale Před 24 dny +2

      It doesn’t make the share more volatile, it decreases the shares outstanding thus increasing the earnings per share for each stockholder.. hence the value goes up. It’s a legitimate tool when the business decides that reinvesting the money in its growth is suboptimal at the moment

      @@user-io4sr7vg1v actually capitalism is the right to profit from private ownership of capital. For example you can own a factory and profit from other people's labor. Or you can own an apartment building and profit from renting the units out.
      Communism basically just requires that ownership be shared by the workers, or the residents. This can be as small as a housing co-op or a small business where the employees each hold equal share in the business. A large scale example of this is the Mondragon corporation.
