      for me the situation is different. I also like when you need to think and plan your fight to defeat the boss, but Malenia is too much for me. I spent 50 attempts on her with mimic tear, my own tear and dual katanas, but didn’t kill her. I think the problem is that I went through all the souls games with a shield and I don't have enough reaction. I killed Manus, Artorias and Kalamith on the first try. I can say the same about the demon prince in ds3. the fume knight fell from the seventh. Now I’m playing Bloodborne and i’m in Y’aargul. Probably i’m going to try and defeat her after bloodborne because it’s quite fast and there is no shields. This will definitely help me to improve my reaction.

      Healing with every single hit is straight up unfair. I did manage to beat her after many hours of trying,but it still didn't make me change my mind. Healing with every single hit she does is just insanely unfair. Almost drove me crazy. And let's not forget that she pulls her waterflow dance move completely randomly,even if you are directly under her which 99% of the time results in instant death. In order to beat her with no summons or crazy weapons you need to not touch grass for days and just learn all her attack patterns like the back of your hand. And it still might not be enough without some luck on your part. It's the only souls boss that i would consider to be actually unfair to the player

    My opinion on some of these ranks is definitely a bit different, as I like to account partially for how hard some fights are relative to when you encounter them for the first time. Anyways, my personal ranking would probably go:
    7. Manus: Honestly a tough but fair fight. Definitely way faster and more complex than anything else in DS1, but I think he's honestly pretty fair for the most part. This is highly subjective, but I've never had a ton of problems with the fight.
    6. Flamelurker: This is a fight that shows how far Fromsoft's boss design has come. The guy's AI is super basic, throwing out really repetitive moves with ridiculously fast windups that can be incredibly hard to punish with larger weapons. His hitboxes have hard-to-gauge AoE effects that can clip you even on a successful dodge, and he constantly jumps around at random in a way that makes the encounter just feel unpredictable. The Maneaters are also up there, but I personally think the runback to their fight isn't quite as bad, and based on the area I personally prefer to save them for late game anyways.
    5. Fume Knight: Hands-down the hardest fight in DS2. His moves hit like a truck, and some of his attacks are deceptively fast considering how large his weapons are. He's pretty easy to read after a while, but he's similar to Nameless King in that small mistakes can get punished very hard.
    4. Sister Friede: It's a toss-up between most of the DLC bosses, but Sister Friede wins out due to the sheer endurance it takes to get through all three phases of her fight. She's not as tanky as Midir or Gale, but her speed in phase 3 makes her the greatest challenge imo. There are also just a lot of smaller obstacles thrown into the fight, like having to deal with the 2v1 in phase 2 and learning how to counter her invisibility.
    3. Headless Ape: This might be an odd choice, but I think this fight is just awful on the first playthrough. The Ape is fought only about halfway into the game, and he's like a prototype Demon of Hatred that throws out a lot of the traditional tells you've grown used to. I haven't had as much trouble on repeat playthroughs, but my first win took more time than Isshin (who is tough but feels like a very proper culmination of everything that the game has taught you so far).
    2. Orphan of Kos: I don't think this fight is comparatively as big of a difficulty spike as some others, but by virtue of being the toughest boss with Bloodborne's fast and aggressive combat system, I have to rank him pretty highly. Phase 1 is pretty learnable, but Phase 2 is the section where this fight becomes a total nightmare. I was using a larger weapon for this fight, and I definitely feel like that influenced the amount of time it took me to overcome him. Watching saw cleaver footage makes me think this fight is probably more manageable with a faster weapon with some stagger potential.
    1. Malenia: Not much to say. Waterfowl makes this fight a brutal difficulty spike. There isn't a single other fight in the series that was more rewarding to beat after countless hours of grinding it out.

It might have been a couple less attempts then Demon of Hatred for me, but I was far angrier because I knew they were only mid game bosses. I don't mind "suffering" to endgame bosses, but early and mid game struggles make me mad because I view them as just being in the way, not the endgame.

  • @axel9473
    @axel9473 Před rokem +8

    For me Orphan and Friede share rank 3. Both are pretty much the only fights that still scare me a bit when going into a DS3 or BB playthrough. I don't die a ton to them anymore and when i was playing the games more i even had some 1st tries but for me there is no question that they are the hardest in DS3 and BB.
    Inner Father is number 2. In the main game i also would have said Isshin, maybe Demon of hatred but after the release of the inner bosses, Inner father definitly takes it. On a charmless+Demon Bell run he is absolutely insane. Easily one of the hardest hitting and hardest to read bosses ever. If Malenia didn't have the waterfowl dance, Inner Father would honestly be harder than her.
    And that should also make it clear that i too have Malenia at the top. Her entire movepool is pretty tough but waterfowl dance of course puts her over the edge. Hands down the hardest boss Fromsoft ever made.

  • @alchemy5750
    @alchemy5750 Před rokem +13

    I might be an exception but Friede always felt very easy for me after I managed to defeat her the 1st time and realized her weakness, mainly cause she's extremely vulnerable against heavy charged attacks and you can just keep pancaking and staggering her even with a mid-sized weapon. Gael was the real menace for me, in the best way possible. Friede'a fight feels rather dragged and I think the only difficulty comes from having 3 complete healthbars, which is not a good mechanical indicator of "difficulty" (cause you know... just slapping more HP to anything won't really make it difficult, rather boring. Imagine Gael having a full healthbar for all his 3 phases.

  • @fallen9997
    @fallen9997 Před rokem +1

    I haven't played BB nor DeS, so here's my ranking:
    5. DS2: Sir Alonne - yes, Fume Knight can be challenging, and 2nd phase changes the fight significantly, Alonne has just really strong moveset. He can be cheesed by shields, but we are not using those. Tough, but fair.
    4. Sekiro: Demon of Hatred - he felt difficult because of how unique he was in this sea of Humanoid Bosses. I have really good mastery of parrying, so other bosses are a breeze for me (except for Inner Father and Inner Isshin, but they still take me 2-3 tries before I beat them). Demon is the only fight I really feared when doing No Death Sekiro Run, so that's saying something.
    3. DS1: Manus, Father of the Abyss - the only one we agree on. Initially I thought O&S are harder, but then I got to 2nd playtrough after finishing the Trilogy (I've beaten Sekiro before DS1) and oh boy, Manus grew up on me. Very Hard boss, even though he is from the oldest FromSoft game I played, and that's saying something.
    2. DS3: Slave Knight Gael - Friede is squishy, and 3rd phase is the only very hard thing about her, Midir is tankier than Gael, but his attacks are less weird, and Nameless can be learned. Gael's moveset is just weird in 1st phase, he is a prototype of an ER boss, for sure. And then we have 2nd and 3rd phase. 2nd is easy, but can get you, and then 3rd is really overwhelming with stuff happening on screen. Lightning, Dark Soul thingies, bolts, and Gael everywhere. And his HP, while not the highest, is really high.
    1. ER - Maliketh, the Black Blade - Malenia's attacks are a child's play to dodge (except for Waterfowl and Clones). Radahn is a tough midgame boss, but he's in midgame. Morgott has really weird moveset, but liw stats (still harder than Malenia and Radahn), and Mohg is the Lord of Delay. Maliketh is everywhere, he is hard to get a hit to (if you are not aggressive, something in my brain tells me to wait until his attacks end, and that's a mistake). He deals very high damage, and is overall a real threat. He has little HP bar, but it's not an issue for him when he's hard to hit.

    The difficulty of Isshin falls off a bit on repeat playthroughs however if you play charmless with the demon bell active then the difficulty comes back. You may think you have mastered the fight but then take the training wheels off and the difficulty comes back. Shame you didn’t fight Inner Father or Inner Isshin, they are pretty tough and Inner Father is especially brutal when playing charmless with demon bell active. I still don’t think they’re as difficult as Melania but they’re up there. Personally I think the base difficulty of Sekiro is too easy but the first playthrough is still pretty tough as I died to Isshin many times before I was able to beat him.

    I don’t get how people say Sigrun is harder than Malenia. I feel like the earlier Valkyrie fights gave me trouble, but by the time I reached Sigrun I was ready for everything she threw at me and managed to beat her in 5 tries on the second highest difficulty without revival items (I straight up forgot they existed lmao). Meanwhile, Malenia had me spending like 3 hours per day over the course of 6 days trying to beat her, and that was with a frost-bleed dual katana build. I agree with you that Malenia is the hardest boss I have ever fought, I used to think it was like… Yozora or Data Xion from KH3, but they only took me around 2-3 hours to beat. Malenia took me 15-20 hours 🗿

    Do you take NG+ into consideration when making these rankings? Cause sure Laurance isn't too bad in the vanilla game but in NG+ cycles, two quick swipes and you're out even if you have an inflated HP. He also has a huge hitbox since he is such a large creature and unlike Orphan the arena is relatively cramped so you can't run away from him for too long.

    The difficulty in From Software really comes from the range of possibilities and what you decide to learn. In Sekiro the first hours are rough because there is one way to play. But after learning the gameplay with Genichiro and later on Shinobi Owl, I died a maximum of 4 times (Isshin sword saint) to late game bosses (Genichiro killed me the most with 8 tries), despite the patterns being complex.
    But Elden Ring being the game with the most variety, the bosses are adapted to multiple playstyles, which led me to not understand I needed to play agressively, dodge into attacks, and being absolutely slaughtered by Hoarah Loux, Radahn, Malenia, Deathrite bird, Morgott, Maliketh, Mohg (playing a melee build only). Judging by the patterns, AI, agressiveness, Elden Ring has the most difficult bosses of every From Software games.

    • @RichardAce218
      @RichardAce218 Před rokem +1

      For me it was the other way arround, maybe because I played Sekiro with demon bell from the beggining, but I still find it harder because you has to know when to deflect/jump/dash out/mikiri and attack meanwhile ER (like most SL) you just need to time roll and attack (unless you play with shield builds). Malenia took me 2-3 hrs (I was lvl 120 double Uchikatana no summons no bleed build for a challange) meanwhile Isshin 4-5 hrs (I reckon that I removed demon bell debuff after 2-3 hours to see how the fight was normally and I beat him first try that way, but didn't deathblow him because I wanted to beat him with demon bell on for the challenge after beating everything else with it).
      I have played ER more but I still kinda prefer Sekiro a little more because like you mentioned at ER you have to play deppending the boss, mostly the slow game (you can play very aggresive vs very few like Radagon and if you have the stamina), meanwhile at Sekiro you can play the slow game or full agressive vs any boss.
      I was hopping they adding something similar to the deflection system at ER (aside parry) for a more agressive aproach sometimes, hate how guarding with weapons/shields works (not worthy in my opinion if you loose hp and stamina at the same time, buckler parry run is fun thou).
      Also I find Malena doesn't has rng bullshit like Isshin backjump spear sttack after 2nd phase. After you learn Malenia moveset there are no surprises, there is always an answer for everything, even for water flow if you were at close range, but for Isshin it is always that attack that makes it unpredictable). And of course the Shura route one is a pain in the ass too (add inner versions plus demon bell + charmless both Saint and Old versions are pain)

  • @SomeUnkindledAsh
    @SomeUnkindledAsh Před rokem

    I completely agree with whoever told you Sigrun is harder than Malenia. She's at her peak on GMGOW difficulty on a fresh NG cycle. By the time you see her in NG+ you have all the best equipment in the game and I think she's easier than Malenia at that point. They're super different fights though. Sigrun has a hard counter for pretty much everything she does. The tricky part is remembering how to counter each move and performing it fast enough to catch her. Sigrun's moveset is probably 3x the size of Malenias, and she will two-shot a max character most of the time depending on which moves catch you. So you can make two mistakes, and the fight is way longer because her health bar is absolutely massive.

    • @saula8948
      @saula8948 Před rokem

      It honestly really comes down to learning the patterns . Malenia's biggest difficulty comes from waterfowl dance , Sigrun has a lot of moves and is tough until you learn how to fight her .
      Sigrun even on ng on gmgow can be cheesed too if you choose to do so , kvasir talisman is op , maxed out blades are very strong as well especially the delayed attack that 3 hits her and does an elemental explosion on her . Both bosses are only difficult until you properly learn them , when you do they become honestly kind of easy .
      On my first playthrough on Malenia it took me roughly 50 attempts without summons and without ashes of war . I played her like a ds3 boss to make it challenging but the more I fought her the more openings and weaknesses I saw in her moveset . Sigrun on gmgow took me like 80 attempts and was harder the first time but now its hard to say both are kind of easy to be honest . I even beat both at lvl 1 hitless , but at lvl 1 Malenia is much harder . Malenia also got an indirect nerf in patch 1.06 , before you couldn't run away from her at point blank with running or dodging backwards , you had to try running around her and then trying to dodge the rest of the attack , now since patch 1.06 light rolling added 10% more distance on light rolling so with 3 light rolls you can roll back even at point blank and her first flurry of waterfowl will not reach you .
      Sigrun on the other hand is more really learning all her moves on ng and ng+ , once you do , you can toy with her .
      It really depends how you define difficulty also , do you count your first playthrough , your second , new game or new game + or ng + max scaling , do you use some restrictions and so on and so fort . This is the problem with this video and this question about difficulty in general , a lot of bosses that seemed super difficult become either mildly challenging after you learn them and beat them multiple times or even a joke . So it really needs to be defined if it's your first experience or if you mastered the game and beat these bosses dozens of times .

    • @SomeUnkindledAsh
      @SomeUnkindledAsh Před rokem

      @Saula That could really be said for any boss in any game. They're difficult until they're not. You make a good point. Assessing difficulty between two different bosses in two different games is the furthest thing from simple. I suppose I was leaning toward my first victory experiences, or whatever factors combine to give me my general impression of difficulty. I don't really know exactly what those would be. I do agree, however, that Sigrun is easier to me now after fighting them both a ton. Really, it's just based on my personal experience. Which includes more variables than I could possibly list. I think GMGOW on ng GOW is generally an overall much harder difficulty than ER presents. Healing stones dont do much, so you usually just get basically one health bar for a boss encounter. ER has tons of flasks, but it's easier to get hit imo. Er also has summons, and it's easier to overlevel. It's about to break my brain thinking of all the variables i could include. I could go on all day. All I know is when the question pops up, Sigrun is the answer that pops into my head.

  • @karayi7239
    @karayi7239 Před rokem

    melenia is the obvious answer for the hardest boss in elden ring, but other than her waterfowl dance, she's very average. a 100 physical shield trivializes that ability, having freeze pots trivializes that ability, bloodhound step trivializes that ability. maliketh, godfrey, and radagon/elden beat are all more challenging overall.
    As for sekiro, demon of hatred is the hardest, not because of its mechanics or damage, but for the simple fact that deflects are practically useless against him, he requires the use of the lotus umbrella and dodges in a way not present in any boss before him. It's effectively learning a new game just to beat him. sword saint is ruined by his phase 3, returning lightning is braindead easy and deals a shitload of damage to him, his phase 1 is pretty manageable as he doesn't have many combos and is passive.

    She was much more aggressive in the 1st phase and could execute WFD very often.
    However, now there's a limit to it in the 1st phase and she executes it after some of her health is gone. So, it is possible to bait the attack out.
    Overall, this is the only boss in the game that I can't beat reliably everytime. Most other bosses are more or less doable reliably everytime once you master the game but Malenia's one gimmick attack is still a pain in the butt and to this day, I can't dodge the attack up close unless I bait her from a distance.

      That's actually not true it least not anymore , since patch 1.06 she got indirectly nerfed . Light rolling got buffed in that patch , the distance of the light roll is increased by 10 % which might not seem like much but it it's huge , if you are point black when she is about to do waterfowl just roll back 3 times and you will not get hit by the first flurry at all and the rest of the waterfowl I assume you know how to do . But even if you couldn't dodge the attack at point blank which now you can reliably too , you could always use a shield to block the first flurry , she gets a little bit of life back but no big deal , you can also throw freezing pots at her which will cancel her waterfowl up to like 2 times in the fight . If waterfowl is the biggest problem then using a weapon with long range will make waterfowl much less of an issue also . After beating Malenia like 50 times so far she is kind of a joke to be honest .

    Even while I summoned for Malenia it only made her more impossible with that double healthbar, plus the game was still very fresh and nobody knew a strategy to defeat her so all my companions were winging it with me. 😅.

      I get myself summoned for Malenia sometimes and I got to say, the hardest job of a summon in that fight is to keep the host in a baby stroller protected at all times, because most people still have not learned her.
      And if Malenias attention shifts to the host for one second, she will immediately murder him.

    In my opinion, fire 🔥 beast bosses in Sekiro and Bloodborne were much harder than the human sized tough finale bosses, since you can parry and run more.
    Hatred and Laurence cannot be parried or staggered easily.

    I like difficult bosses and i like endurance fights. But Malenia is a bit to far i think. It's not even waterfowl dance or the scarlet rot, but her healing is the most annoying boss mechanic ever. Her moveset alone is punishing enough, but everytime she hits you she restores a huge chunk of her healthbar while shredding yours. Every other hard fromsoft boss i would describe as "difficult but fair", Malenia feels unfair.
