Repost of my comment on another video.
When I found this place and heard the music, I felt calm for the first time in my entire playthrough. I looked around a bit, and though I didn't find anything at first, I remember saying "It's nice to know that despite the vile, filthy, terrible horrors of this world, a place like this can still exist within it"
And then I found the tree, found what was inside, and read its description...
You wanna talk about emotion. The sheer weight of where I was hit me like a cinderblock.
I remember staring at the effigy within the tree, the facsimile of Marika and asking "what happened to you?" In reference to her going from a village girl to a tyrant, Before leaving.
Then I learned why the innard people of the Jars have gold hair and a mark on their head, and I just remember feeling so bad for Marika in that moment.
I'm going to list the item description of the Minor Erdtree incantation here:
"Secret incantation of Queen Marika. Only the kindness of gold, without order. Creates a small, illusory erdtree that continuously restores the HP of nearby allies.
Marika bathed the village of her home in gold, knowing full well that there was no one to heal"
Marika started life in this village, or at least her life in the lands between. She lived amongst these villagers, got to know them, they were family.
And the Bonny village began to take them, butcher them, and cram them into pots in some twisted ritual of sainthood.
And for a long time, she was powerless against this fact.
Of course the moment she was made a god she would use that power to wage war, to destroy the fire giants, to create and cause the horrible things we see in the Lands of Shadow.
Her home was taken from her. She truly is Fractured Marika. Not just in name or because of the state she's in, but because a piece of her is permanently missing, and she's left as empty and quiet as the village we find.
When I went there for the second time, after beating all bosses, and seeing all lands in the land of shadow, I finally found the minor erdtree incantation. I summoned on the edge of the cliff and just sat there for a while until it faded, then sat with the effigy for a while, before leaving.
    Because it's all so tragic.
I still think that Marika is evil, and I cant excuse what she's done, but I do feel sorry for her.

This was the home of Marika, not of Marika the god, or Marika the tyrant, but a Marika we never knew, a Marika from a quiet little village, who lived a quiet, uneventful life, until one day, her entire life would be uprooted forever.

The way she achieved divinity too is equally traumatic and horrifying. I don't think it's a coincidence that a gigantic fingerprint is right by the shaman village. In the depths of her despair, something beyond human comprehension made landfall, and contacted her. She couldn't have become a god all by herself, the fingers saw to it instead. Acting on the guidance of these monsters from another star, she did anything it took to get her vengeance.

Meanwhile Miquella instead of doubting his path doubled down and even removing his other half saint Trina which was his love and the ability to doubt himself. Poor Marika. Even though she is a God, she came from a small village. And she witnessed hornsents murder her people. Hornsents killed shamas either of a slander or they were seeing themselves as divine beings, just because of pure egoism. So, Marika wanted revenge. Maybe because of this feelings, Greater Will sent Meytr and Elden Beast to the Lands of Between. She became a God. Ordered his son to crusade hornsents, then came to her village for the last time and beautified her village with minor erdtree. Left her braid to her grandmother's statue.
Probably we never know what was her confession. Maybe the confession was she is also Radagon? But doesn't matter. She left her home in her behind as a beautiful momento.

Frenzied Flame also doesn't need any sacrifices for its influence, just need strong emotions. When I first discovered Shaman Village and found minor Erdtree, I was optimistic, I read "Marika bathed the village of her home in gold, knowing full well there was no one to heal" as that nobody was in need of healing. But now that I know what happened to Shaman Village, it's sad. Very, very sad.

My favorite moment in the DLC. The first main complaint I had for Elden Ring is the lack of "moments of silence" like this one, which I get it's weird but wish there were more chill moments. Who played knows what I'm talking but, something like THAT Shadow of the Colossus vibe is what ER could totally have more and nailed it, and this Shaman Village kinda encapsulates what I wanted.
I was talking to a friend how I wish there was an emptied big open field section with a big castle where there is NOTHING, just lore at least. Could be seen as a dumb waste, I get it the main loop gameplay is combat + exploration. We have to explore because combat, and there is combat because we explore. But I really wish they took more risks for moments like this.

I came here the first time, partially spoiled thanks to the internet yet regardless, I still was broken by it especially the moment I heard the music choice, being that of the very first strum you hear whenever you turn on the game. Like...this is where it all started, Marika was just a simple village girl who heal and help those in need yet due to the Hornsent's atrocities, she wanted all to suffer the way she did. And if we go down the theory lane where Messmer (who is possibly Marika's firstborn) was cursed by the Fell God to carry the flames and red hair, it just furthers her hatred to all who keep hurting her family to the point it ripped away her humanity. And the shattering was the result of her fed up with her divinity cause if she can't even protect her family; if she can't even have humanity anymore where she would have reconsider to not make everyone within her family and the lands between/shadows suffer, then she will end it all herself. She imprison herself purposely to cease her from hurting anyone further and whatever the Tarnish will do at this point is what it is.
It's also worth noting too how this village was built nearby Messmer's keep which also says a lot on his character where he was familiar with Marika before godhood stripped away his mother's humanity as a whole. The tragedy of Marika doesn't excuse her actions alongside the rest of her family's atrocities (and I mean all of them), but it makes it all the more understanding the moment we step into the village and have an idea on what her true vision was but sadly would never be cause divinity comes with a cost. It shows the true horror of reaching godhood can fuck with anyone including us.

i sat down. i put my character down sitting right next to the minor erdtree. it was peaceful. the wind felt... real and calming, just how marika wanted her life to be.
away from all chaos, destruction, and imperfections of the world, we found peace. it is where marika grew up. where she started was where we ended,

When I played the base game, I always thought Marika was cold and heartless. She cast her own sons into the sewers, banished the nomads even further underground, and shattered her own order. It was hard to sympathize with a god that seemingly abused her power.
Playing the DLC... I now have a much different perspective on her. She was terrified of the sons who were living reminders of the hornsent, she was terrified of the possibility that the frenzied flame could haunt her new life too, and she saw the flaw in the order she was god of the night her favored son died.
Despite having godhood, Marika is still just a human.

    • @eheh3723
      @eheh3723 Před 5 dny

The thing is, I don't think she wanted to abandon her boys. The Regal Omen Bairn is a doll made of baby Morgott, presumably as a momento for Marika and Godfrey so they can have something to remember them by. The description states that it was made in secret. Why would a woman, a mother, abandon her children only to secretly make dolls of their likeness to hold and remember them by? It's because she was bound by Order and the Greater Will. It wasn't her choice to abandon her boys. As Trina said, "A caged divinity is worse than death." No wonder she shattered the ring.

No dummy. Her people were slaughtered by the hornsents. She obtained godhood to save anyone who remained and started a crusade against the hornsent to do so, but no one remained alive once she returned. This is why the minor erdtree is there, it was more of a rose on the coffin moment for her. She's not innocent or a good person by any means, but I do have to correct that statement you've made as it's simply not true as the hornsents aren't her people, the shamans were. Aka the enemies that are made up of flesh you find in goals that wear pots. They were being sacrificed for the hornsents saint hood, shoved into pots and melted together in those masses of flesh.
