Yes, more like this please! As someone with a chronic illness the more I can automate my life the more I can focus on living boldly â€
Thanks for sharing this tip! Never realized I could use airtags this way. I'll be thinking of some good ways to get the most out of them now!
Been using tile stickers for remotes, but just got an AirTag âŠ. Love finding new uses for them. Thanks for sharing.
Another great tip and use of a device. I really do enjoy as you seem to find multiple uses for all of your devices. Thank you for helping us get the best value with the products you share.
I never realized AirTags could act as NFC tags like this! One of your best tipsâŠI can think of tons of uses. Thanks for sharing! Could you do some more fitness related videos about specific things you automate at the gym or when you work out?
Thanks for the feedback!
You can buy cheap nfc Stickers for the same effect
Shane, once again, this is brilliant! I have a pocket-sized satchel that I often forgot at home, so I placed an AirTag in it so I canât leave home without it. Knowing I can use this as an NFC tag (or several with your idea of location based programming) gives me at least twice the use!
The only thing is, my Flic 2 Pro Kit just arrived last night! I might have been able to use the smaller box had I seen this 1 day earlier ha! Well, itâs not like Iâve ever had trouble going large on the SmartHome.
Love that you keep coming up with unique content, Shane. Keep it up!
Thanks Dr. Cole!
Love these ideas Shane, my kiddos always switch up the profiles on the Apple TV so this is for sure one that I will try out! đ€Ż Creative and useful content, as always!
Love this vid and idea, glad I found your channel! So I started building a HomeKit set up about 2 years ago, and at the time (coming from nest) the camera options were not good IMO. I still use HomeKit for automation but have a separate camera app, which I donât love. Have you found any good cameras, particularly do you think there ever allow continuous recording?
This is sooo cool!
I can even set an automation by tapping/scanning my "contactless debit card", which apparently has RFC as well! OMG!
Definitely want to learn more shortcuts and ideas for HomeKit. This is my go to channel for a lot of HomeKit content. Keep it up Shane!
Thanks for the feedback Marcus!
Genius ideas! Never knew you could use AirTags this way!
Hey Shane - I have learned so much from your channel. I had no idea about the AirTags. I set up some cool automations. I love adding HomeKit devices in my house. Itâs so much fun. Thanks again! Appreciate your channel.
Thanks for the kind words Melissa. I'm glad you are having as much fun as me automating your home. Keep up the good work! đ
Thanks Shane I have set this up with my AirTag on my house keys to start my music application which I always use when leaving home and more importantly it means I wonât leave the keys behind as I have done too many times in the past. đđœđŹđ§
Very nice, love it! Thanks for sharing.
Just the idea of the airpod airtag case was great - now Iâll be able to find my missing airpods a lot easier. Thanks!
Shane you come up with some realy creative and fun stuff. This is pretty cool and yes, please do more videos like this one showing innovative and creative ways to make your smart home setup smarter and more interesting. It took me a long time to come around to the idea of Homekit, but now I'm finding it adds a new dimension without taking away from anything I had working before...lots of things! Thank you.
Hugh, thank you for the comment and support! đ
Hugh says everything I was thinking. Keep up the great ideas on automation.
Except Shane diod not come up with any of this - that was Apple and the 3rd party accessory makers. Notice the airpod case and remotes have built in airtag holders > 3rd party. Shane simply bought all this stuff and synced up the functionality that someone else progremmed and did a video on what was available. Not really seeing anything original or unique that Shane specifically "came up with" on his own.
Great video! Honestly I haven't even thought of using automation, but after watching this and seeing how easy it is and some of the really useful but also very simple automations one can use everyday I am definitely going to give this a go! Have a new 4 pack still in the package unused!
This is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing!
This video actually blew my mind. I had no idea AirTags could be used in this manner. Thanks for sharing. Also, subscribed!
Thanks for subscribing!
Dude!!! Mind blown for real! Thank you for this!!
This is brilliant!! Thanks for sharing!! One quick question though I find nfc tags and even AirTags respond super slow, (have to hold it there re tap a few times) not as fast as your demonstrate in the video. Is there something Iâm missing? Iâm on the latest iOS with 14PM so donât think itâs my hardware. Would love your thoughts on this, thanks in advance!
Awesome video. I havenât seen how far NFC shortcuts have come in years.
Would be cool to have and NFC card by the fridge to open MFP or Lose It to track food.
This is actually awesome! Iâm sure others have made videos, but this is the first Iâve seen of this. Great job Shane! đđŸ
Keep this all coming man. My mind is turning now.
Awesome, thanks for watching! Let us know what cool ideas you come up with! đ
This is great ShaneâŠI bought some NFC tags off Amazon recently, but they are a bit hit and miss. Sometimes they trigger, sometimes they donât. Have some other ones on the way. If they donât work AirTags may be an option. I set up one to open/close my soma blind depending on the current state of the blind. I have also set one up to control my entrance light.
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
your enthusiasm is contagious and creativity always interesting. thanks.
This is great! Please do a Top 10 creative and fun stuff to do witch "AirTags Shorcuts", showing how to configure them. I think this could be really cool. Could be part of a series, created based on your own experience (like in this video) but also considering the recommendation and experience that other people are commenting here, for example, using the AirTag in the remote to active a Movie Scene (like changing lights by time of day, waking cup the Apple TV and TV or Movie proyector, sending a message to family about "movie is about to start", selecting the right movie app.. you know, that cool smart stuff). Anyway, this is function is great and this is just an idea ;O). Thanks!
Thanks for the comment and idea. Love it!
Great tip! I just setup a shortcut to open a note with all emergency info for each of my dogs when scanning the AirTag on their collar.
Great idea!
Keep in mind that will only work for your iPhone or whatever youâve set the automation. If somebody found the tag with wonât donât much thing
@@jomotech Yes, I know. It was only intended to work for me.
@@GretchenCawthon got your point now! đ
Great stuff mate! This is super helpful! đ
I have a HomeKit compatible deadbolt lock. Yale to be specific. Anyway to make it that you have an air tag on your key ring and use the tag and tap the HomeKit door lock and open it that way?
Scene: holding my empty bowl up to Shane and saying in a small, trembling voice; "Please sir, may I have some more?".
Donât you mean âPlease Siri, may I have some more?â
@@mr2ns
Thanks Frederick!! đđ
This was cool! I have AirTags tans just got gifted 4 more from work đ. So the nfc stuff is completely separate from the security features of the AirTag? I mean it doesnât matter what iCloud account the AirTag is bound to?
This is crazy!! Didnât know you could do this. Another great video bro. đ„đ„
Thanks bro, appreciate it!!
Wow. Thanks for this
Do you have any idea how to make smart sliding window? I couldnât find any product nor reviews
I believe you can turn off system notifications in the display screen usage section. You have to pick most recent notifications and then disable. Screen time/ notifications section.
Cool! Thanks for the couple of ideas đ
Thanks for the brilliant idea! Do you know if this still works with iOS16? Because if I click on scan for NFC tags, my IPhone 11 with iOS16 does not find my AirTag. Thank you for your answer!
I know there used to be a way to get rid of the notification using screen time. It worked a while ago but not sure if itâs still available
Can you set it to engage at first swipe then disengage at second?
Wow! Gotta try some of these ideas. đ
Thanks, Shane it's a cool idea đ I have 8 airtag not used and more than 4 on my apple tv remote control So now I need to think about what automation I will create đ€©
Thanks for watching. Can't wait to hear what you come up with!
Thank you so much đ
Wow I never knew that! đź thatâs awesome!! Thanks Shane đ
this is golden!!!!!! Thanks man!
Great ideas! Thanks Shane.
I love shortcuts and automations!
Shane how do get my nfc tag to only work when I am home? I cannot seem to figure out how to do that!
This is incredible!! You definitely gave me some good ideas! Awesome video! đ„
Thanks Adam!
Mind blown đ€Ż
Great idea, didnât know that, thanks! Just recently tapped into Homekit. Didnât need HK before because our new house has the Loxone smarthomesystem already build in but I love Apple and wanted to use HK instead of Loxone! Iâm not a techie and itâs kind of hard that these two systems donât clash but itâs also fun to figure stuff out. đ

Great find Shane! I did not know AirTags had NFC. Thx.
WoW! Thanks ShaneâŠ. Didnât know it was possibile.. great idea!

Thatâs crazy. Thanks for this
Please more examples of automations!
Thank you for this realy nice tip. Just subscribe to your channel. Just found it. I am a realy great Apple fan. And these tips are realy very welcome! â€â€â€â€
Hi, using Switch user account using Apple TV entry in Shortcuts, I am not able to enter User, it says that nothing could be found and I can not tap manually. Any idea why?
Also, was you able to turn off opening on Safari thing, when you scan airTag
Really waiting for your answers.
Great. Quick and easy
Could I use an airtag or a HomeKit sensor to alert me if I have mail in my letterbox. ie means I don't have to check for physical mail delivery. Which sensor might work best?
Sign up for informed delivery on USPS website. Then you can get a visual of any mail that is being delivered to your mailbox each day
This is GAME CHANGING
Awesome video! Never knew you could set AirTags as NFC tags! Also, what app do you use for your grocery list? I havenât found a good way of keeping track of my lists yet lol.
Thanks Kristian! That was just the native Apple Reminders app.
Would love to see how to integrate this with amazon echo or Wyze products. As far as I know you can't as neither Amazon nor Wyze have setup shortcut capabilities.
Definitely like these types of videos. Curious how well air tags work in a parking structure. 10:30pm at LAX recently and I could not find my older car. Spent a nice 30 mins looking for the car. I wonder if I had one of these in the car, I could have been sparred this frustrating situation. đ
Thanks for the feedback.
I would think an airtag could help in a situation like that. lol
You can drop a pin for a parked vehicle that has CarPlay and you can then use the Maps app on your iPhone to show you where your car is at. I have used this in the past. It is quite convenient.
@@Polkster13 works even for cars without carplay that have a bluetooth connection to your phone
You can also just say something like this: âHey Siri, remember where I parked my car.â Then it will pin a very exact location which you can later find again by asking: âHey Siri, where did I park my car?â You will be able to see your car on ïŁżâs Maps App. I also used this trick once to find my bike which I parked near a festival. Hope my comment was useful/helpful for somebody :) .
@@germantechniclover8195 this is very helpful. Thanks so much!
I had no clue. Thatâs awesome
I saw that you could unlock your door and unarm your security system when you arrive at home. Can you have it if you leave it would lock the door and arm the security? I want it to do both scenarios. So when I arrive it does one thing and when I leave it does the opposite. Is this possible?
Hello, greetings from the Dominican Republic, I like the content of your channel, it is very useful. I want to know if I can use the AirTag with the HomeKey. I mean, just touch the AirTag to any lock that has a HomeKey. Thank you
Hey Shane thanks for this video it is awesome! Iâd like to use this nfc automation to unlock my front door. I want to place an AirTag on a fence near my front door so that when I walk by I can just tap my phone. However it seems like I have to tap on the notification my phone shows. Is there a way to skip that step and have the short cut run right away?
Also on a diff note: I have two kids and two nest cams, one in each room. I have Starling hub so I can see cams in HomeKit (đȘ). Iâve looked everywhere for an app that will let me not only stream both cams at the same time, BUT ALSO hear the audio from both so I can hear each kid if they cry without having to toggle manually. Is there a solution to this đđđ?
Hey Federico. First of all, I probably wouldn't use an AirTag for that. You might want to look at some outdoor NFC tags.
Secondly, yes there are some ways around the requirement to tap the notification. This is happening because the front door is a "secure accessory." You can use a dummy switch or smart plug to automate with the nfc tag, then unlock the door when the dummy switch turns on, as a workaround. There have been a few comments here about doing that.
Maybe try the HomeCam app. I think you can look at multiple HomeKit camera streams and enable the audio on them.
Is there a way to use them as a bluetooth beacon?
Great video, Shane! Always enjoy watching your content
Thanks Brandon!
Hey! Cool video! Would you share where you got your brown watch band? I dig it.
Nice! Just strange thing for me.. When I try to add my Airtag like NFC my Iphone donât found it. What can be the reason?
would please tell us how we can use airtags to run alexa routine.
Great video. Can you send me a simple written sequence for connecting it to my iPhone so that I can track lost luggage?
Is it possible to use airtag to log on with username and password on an internet site?
I didnât know you could use the airtag as an NFC tag. Thatâs very interesting. I will be watching the comments about this. Thanks, Shane.
Thanks for watching!
Donât need AirTag for NFC, use any hotel room key⊠or old credit card
@@amoroso1967 I didnât know that either. Thanks.
I have a medicine cabinet with a Aqara contact sensor to tell when the door is open/closed. Do you know how I can make a automation that will notify me if I didnât open the cabinet that day. Say run it automatically at 1p everyday.
This will be used to remind me to take my medication.
Thanks for your hard work!
You can probably do something similar directly in the Aqara app. Setup an automation to run every day at a certain time, if the cabinet has been closed for over 6 hours, for example, then send a push notification.
Alternatively, I'd check out this video for some ideas. We setup an automation that runs every day at a certain time, if NO motion has been detected all day: czcams.com/video/5wqmnzc_73E/video.html
@@ShaneCreates awesome thanks bro
Hi Shane. Thanks for the video. My iPhone won't scan my airtag in the shortcut automation setup. Any ideas?
Does your iPhone support NFC scanning (iPhone XR or later)?
Yes it does. iPhone 12 pro max. The NFC works fine when I make payments but does not work when I scan the airtag.
I always get god ideas from your video, and then there are videos like this one. I truly will be using this idea. I never knew this was possible. I bought a new Ford F150. There is a HOOBs addition to where I can ask Siri to start my truck. I can now use my truck AirTag and start my truck by scanning the Truck AirTag.
So cool! I'm glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
If you go to screen time, and notifications, I think you can disable the notifications from there. Had to do that when I pranked my friends to send their phone into an infinite loop between two apps. Pretty fun.
Hi Shane, North Carolina native here! I have two quick questions about this amazing approach.
1.) Can you use the Apple Watch to trigger the NFC on the AirTag, or does this only work with the iPhone up to the AirTag?
2.) Can you think of any security worries if you were to say, put an AirTag at your front door on the outside and when you arrive home, hold your phone up to it to unlock your door. Kind of like a poor man's Apple HomeKey, lol. Could this be hacked or used by another phone, or is it strictly locked to the device you set it up with (ie your phone)?
Thank you!!
I was wondering about Apple Watch too.
Canât comment on #1, but you can absolutely use an NFC tag outside to trigger an automation like that. It would be cheaper and more durable to use a weatherproof NFC tag instead of an AirTag since NFC tags donât need a battery and are weatherproof (unlike AirTag). You can buy them on Amazon very cheap ($1/tag). They usually come with an adhesive backing so you can affix it to something. Be aware that if you plan to put one on a metal surface youâll need to get an NFC tag specific for metal surfaces. Regular NFC tags placed on a metal surface will often have a difficult time being read by your phone, but they sell ones with a special material inside to eliminate the interference between the NFC tag and the metal surface behind it. These may cost a few cents more per tag. Great if you want to put one on your fridge, washing machine, etc.
There is no security risk when using NFC tag (either standalone tags or an AirTag) since the automation will only run when your phone detects it. When a phone reads the NFC tag (standalone or one inside an AirTag) without an automation configured on that phone, nothing will happen. It is only when you configure an automation on your phone to run once a specific NFC tag is detected that something happens (like turning on a light or unlocking a door). The downside of this is that youâll need to setup the same automation on every phone you want to be able to unlock your door. The NFC tag simply serves as the trigger for your automation to run on a given phone/device. Hope that makes sense!
Hey Blake! I spent a number of years living (off and on) in North Carolina in my youth!
1. Unfortunately we cannot use the Apple Watch to trigger NFC automations. Wish we could and I keep hoping Apple will allow it. Seems like the tech is there since the watch does use NFC for things like HomeKey and ApplePay. Maybe one day...
2. I second Mike's comment. He nailed it.
To add to that, as a bonus tip.... if you DO want to setup an NFC automation on multiple phones, you can first create a regular shortcut instead of the automation. You cannot share automations, but you CAN share shortcuts. This way, you can just share the shortcut, to your spouse for example, without having to recreate the whole thing. Now for NFC, just create a new NFC automation that, when tapped, runs the shortcut ('run shortcut' action). Now you only need to setup the NFC automation, with one step (run shortcut) on each phone.
Great ideas.
New subscriber thank you đ and aloha from Kaneohe Hawaii lover of mobile tech đ
Thanks.
Hereâs an idea for an AirTag that is connected to your AirPods case. Use the âSet, playback destination toâ and choose the AirPods that you have this AirTag with. This is most useful if you have multiple iOS devices and/or multiple AirTags and your AirTags donât always connect with the right phone or iPad.
Thanks for the idea Gregg!
I can't seem to get my phone to read/scan my airtag when trying to set up an automation (Battery is good and I've tested the airtag with FMP).. Any suggestions?
This awesome!
Afternoon,
Iâm interested to have my tag activate my Apple TV and change to my profile.
Do you have instructions somewhere I can follow?
Thanks for the great ideas đĄ đ
Thanks for watching Emelia. I didn't post specific instructions for this but you can follow the steps shown in this video and just use the "Switch User Account" action (one of the Apple TV Remote shortcut actions)
how can i use this in my wallet(attached Airtag) ; so that it will sound or text or call my mobile as a reminder if i am away of that wallet for for given distance ( example.. 10 ft ?)?
Whereâd you get the Apple TV / AirPods case with the AirTag cutout?
Here's my affiliate links for the ones I have:
ATV Remote - geni.us/ATVairtag
AirPod Case - geni.us/AirpodTag
Great NFC video, thanks for the tips.
One amazing idea is to scan the airtag attached to the wallet and execute the routine : refill yourself!!!
I'm kidding, even I have to admit that would be awesome if that routine would work, but there are plenty of new possibilities with this airbag NFC feature.
Now you give me some ideas on my next few authorizations which I can probably integrate with Webcore for more advanced and complex routines.
Great ideas to get more use out of Air tags if you already own some. If you are looking to automate something new I think the NFC tags are probably cheaper as opposed to just buying air tags for this specific reason.
Yes NFC tags are 50 cents
Agreed. NFC tags are definitely cheaper. I probably wouldn't get airtags just for this. But if you have them already, might as well get that extra use out of them.
Iâve had an air tag for over a year, never used. Now Iâve used it to automate by bedtime routine. Shane you are AWESOME!
A welcome home scene that opens garage door unlocks door, and turns on a pathway would be nice, but I worry a little about creating something that makes my home easier to break into
.Maybe for emergencies that doesn't allow you to press buttons on your phone, or you do not want to alert others that you sense danger like in a potential stalking situation at night.
Tap the tag and it will send messages to a few contacts with your location.
Well, there goes my free time lol. Thanks, Shane.
One idea that came to mind: when u have friends/fam come over and would like them to connect to the Wifi network. Similar to 10-1-Design's Wifi Porter where one simply taps it and boom, they connect to your network.. Can an AirTag be configured for such a task?
Please do some automation for AirTags which can be used on a daily basis
Hi Shane, thank you for the video. Is there a way to use Siri to switch between Apple TV profiles without using an NFC or the remote?
Yea you can create a personal shortcut and use siri to trigger it (by saying Hey Siri and the name of the shortcut).
@@ShaneCreates Thank you for the response, Shane. Do I have to be specific by room location when issuing a shortcut? Meaning, if I have an Apple TV with a HomePod Mini in multiple locations and, I enter one of those locations for example bedroom 1, can I simply say âHey Siri, switch to Johnâs profileâ and the Apple TV will recognize Iâm referring to Bedroom 1? Or must I say "Hey Siri switch to Johnâs profile in Bedroom 1â?
Nevermind: A quick Google search reviled many Shortcut library's. Thanks again.
Thanks great video. First time viewer, subscribed!
Thanks for subscribing!
A way to disable the banner and force it to automate is to pair it to a light automation to be the trigger to automate the true intention; you cannot automate entry accessories due to apple knowing that it can be high risk of leaving your house open accidentally; so you would need to have a pseudo command to bypass the first aspect of hard locking entry based commands
this is very cool
