  • One of Britain's greatest rockstars has just released a new single. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds are back with the new song "Pretty Boy". I am and have been a big Oasis fan for a long time, so let's see if this song holds up to his reputation as one of the best songwriters around.

    I was watching my favourite show QI and according to some research into musical taste, it emerges that when we reach a certain point in our lives we tend to prefer listening to the music we loved in our youth. It then follows that new music is overlooked in favour of whatever we rocked out to during our formative years. Watching your channel Justin enables me to explore great new and also new old music I wasn’t previously aware of. Thank you from my heart for expanding my musical horizons. Pretty much every oasis song is pentatonic

    • @ChainNonSmoker
      @ChainNonSmoker Před rokem

      Ahem...
      The songs aren't "in pentatonic" or "not in pentatonic"
      Songs (usually) are in a KEY, either minor or major -key. It is the phrases(ie. solos, licks and riffs) played with guitar that can be played using pentatonic scales or other scales, but it's just music terminology really since most rock(and maybe blues) guitarists just play the fuck they feel like fits the song possibly ending up playing lots of tones that are included in pentatonic scale of the KEY the songs are in. Heck, even B.B. King the praised Blues legend does that.
      Noel plays lots of lead parts that can be found in pentatonic scales, but he don't just stick to that, he's been heard playing melodic parts that can be in major scale, blues scale(the pentatonic scale with additional "blue notes" both major and minor blues scales), or even some mixolydian modes from time to time(although rarely) if you really wish to over-analyze it.
      But he probably never taught himself any of the formal knowledge about guitar theory scales or harmonies etc. But is just coming up with some fingerings himself or by mimicking the music he likes from the past(which most musicians do anyway) that suit whatever song he's playing lead guitar on.
      Not claiming he's like "tHe GrEaTest GuiTaRist ever!!!", he's very basic in his ways and owes shitload to the likes of Steve Jones, George Harrison and maybe Johnny Marr what comes to his abilities as guitarist but it's just the claim "Oasis songs are in pentatonic" I am pointing out being a very lazy statement.
      Cheers!

    Greetings and salutations to the upper lip! I do enjoy the High Flying Birds, not my favourite of theirs, it just kind of goes on a bit, but there’s a solid minute where I’m transported back to the 90s. I appreciate how Noel’s music often manages to make it feel like you’ve always known the song, without it sounding like a rehash of something else. Damon Albarn has that knack too.

    I had no idea who Justin Hawkins was until Taylor Hawkins Tribute concert. Ima former musician and I gotta say his voice is absolutely amazing he sounded like Freddie Mercury when he sang that little bit with guitar in the beginning of this video He should be the singer of Queen I’ve never heard someone sound like Freddie if my eyes were closed I would’ve thought it was Freddie. With a voice like that he should be much more well known it’s rare when someone can sing like that.

    The tritone interval is very instable. However never considered to be the devils interval.
    It later popularized by Metal Bands and as their promotion they claimed it as such.
    The interval was often used in classical music which was fairly contemporary back then.
    Played for people in power. And they loved it.

  • @DanDevey
    @DanDevey Před rokem +4

    It's a good pop song in that it does what it sets out to do, it's catchy, and repetitive. I think you're right that it lacks any diversion from just being a pop song, but then I suppose it doesn't need to. I think it's sad that pop is what sells (or is rather force fed until it does) rather than creative and diverse music. Not to say Noel isn't talented, but I think there are many other artists who deserve as much if not more attention.

    • @myenemysenemy1043
      @myenemysenemy1043 Před rokem +1

      Guess it depends on what your definition of pop is. Oasis was technically very poppy, but also falls under rock. Meanwhile, bands like the XX would be considered pop, but made some very interesting and creative electronic music.

    • @DanDevey
      @DanDevey Před rokem

      @@myenemysenemy1043 I personally think of pop as more of a format of song writing than a genre of music. Mostly formed around the ABABCB format, heavy chorus, catchy hooks, and easy to follow melody, usually in C. A lot of genres tend to blend when it comes to pop, because it doesn't really matter what genre it is, if it's popular and in the charts, then in my opinion it becomes pop. The definition of pop is popular music, but a lot of popular music tends to follow the same trends that are proven to work. I think music that tries to be itself rather than fall into the trap of following the trend is a lot more potent, because it gives you something you don't expect.
      A lot of songs that have stepped into the charts over the years have managed this, but a large majority of it is just copy and paste, because it's guaranteed to sell. That's my gripe I guess, the ratio is out. This song sells 1. because it's Noel Gallagher and they can get the exposure, and 2. because it follows the format, and if it's played enough it'll sell. That's it though, it doesn't sell because it's doing anything especially creative, it's just Noel Gallagher's new song. Which is great for a product, but lacks any real depth as a musical composition.
