  • The food you eat can have a major influence on the quality of your skin. Yet, conventional medicine primarily deals with acne by lathering potions and lotions on the skin or tackling it with antibiotics or topical steroids. In fact, we spend over a billion dollars on prescriptions and over-the-counter products to cure acne. But eliminating acne is best approached as an inside job.
In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center about how what we eat can drive acne. They also discuss the biggest food culprits, as well as how to tell what foods might be causing an issue for you.
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.
Lisa Dreher is a registered dietitian who got her undergraduate nutrition degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed a dietetic internship through Cornell University. Lisa first worked in the acute care hospital setting and became a Clinical Nutrition Specialist working in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. At the same time, she pursued her Master’s in Nutrition and Integrative Health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and started practicing Integrative and Functional Nutrition in private practice before joining UWC in 2015. She has since received additional training through the Institute for Functional Medicine.
Over the past 10 years, Lisa has delivered several public health lectures on the role of food as medicine and her work has been showcased in Reader’s Digest, on National Public Radio, and she was featured in the Broken Brain 2 series. She also developed the Digestive Health and Gut Microbiome training module for the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine practice group through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Iam curious how you have been doing the diet, like they are taking a 2/3 part of our diet, I find it really hard to cut them out

@@Troppaguy I eat dairy and gluten only if am craving something with it . Probably once a week. If i'm craving something sweet I eat 75 % dark chocolate. I realize that is my gut the one is healing the most. If you heal your gut and microbiome is easier for your body to process the sugar or gluten when you eat it.

@@Troppaguy Yes . For healing your gut you have to remove these foods for a while.

I had so many doctors tell me the gut has nothing to do with skin- “there is no correlation”. At age 18, ( many many moons ago), I knew that sounded wrong to me. After I cleaned my diet, my skin finally started to glow.

Improving my nutrient intake, gut health AND using tea tree oil topically has helped me with my skin. So don't completely neglect skincare though :)

i've known for years that certain foods, ice cream, pizza, chocolates .... would cause acne. Useful info to share, much better than other ways to treat acne.

Would you say fresh fruits or freshly made fruit juices are okay to consume if you are suffering from acne? Or does fruit count as sugary food?

I eat KETO and I'm good with it. I also pay to get photofacial treatments and I love the results, it can last for years and I can eat foods that cause my cystic acne to break out but with the photofacials I'm acne free. I've had cystic acne for nearly 25 years. I'll stick with KETO and keep doing what I'm doing. And please, doctors don't ever listen or address anything other than writing perscriptions. If I spoke to a doctor they'd give me a script for Azeliac. Or as in the olden days, they'd keep you on 150 mgs of antibiotics. I'm done playing games with doctors.

Idk about Raw Milk, look into raw milk unpasteurized from farms. Regular milk has nothing close to the amount of vitamins and health benefits that raw cow and goat milk have
