- Or - how to remove / install sprockets on a Brompton 6 speed folding bike
We would recommend using mechanics gloves! Look at the damage the cleaner can do to your hands!
The Brompton 6 speed is rapidly becoming a firm favourite - due to the wider gearing than the traditional 3 speed Brompton
It combines a 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear with a 2 speed Brompton specific derailleur system - providing a total of 6 speeds
We previously made a video on the removal of the sprockets - but forgot to show how to re-install them
So we made this one
It's in 3 parts - so feel free to skip to the most relevant part for you
1: Removal of the Brompton BWR6 sprockets
2: A bit about the sprockets and how they fit / difference to standard sprockets
3: How to install the BWR 6 sprocket set
Circlip is never that easy. I just spent 10 minutes on it, gave up and watched your technique then did it in 30 seconds! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
(And thanks for watching)
keep your thumb on the split ring as I took mine off a 3 speed sachs and PING could not find it bought another and then found the old one in the dried flower display 3 foot away on dusting 2 weeks later xx live and learn .. love your vids
LOL - that's a good tip!
Thanks for sharing that - and for watching
Great videos. You should complete the 3-speed to 6-speed conversion. Which I have done on my M3L.
Many thanks for watching! Yea we love our 6 speed!
Your videos are fantastic. Unrushed and simplified
Thanks for watching and for your kind feedback
3:23 You made that circlip technique look so easy! For those who are struggling, I found it's useful for the middle of the clip (the not-open end) to be lodged properly under one of the smaller "tabs" so that it's less able to slip. The rest is smooth screwdriver technique to guide it right down. Perhaps a screwdriver that isn't too thick (as shown in this video) will help provide more space too.
you saved me. thank you
I’m maintaining my bikes because of lockdown, this weekend is chain and sprocket replacement on my Brompton. Thank you for the video, you made it look easy.
Thanks for watching
Good luck with the sprocket change
Our no 1 tip is to remove the tension from the chain tensioner when removing it!
Let us know how you get on
brilliantbikes finished and surprisingly easy. I had trouble getting the new circlip on, but it popped on by exactly following your method. Bracing the back of the circlip and then working the ends at the opening.
Thanks again for the video, it really helped.
@@AnthonyThomas_Ant Chain replacement was a doddle; my nemesis is getting the old circlip off LOL
Amazing. These videos are so useful. Thank you.
Thank you so much and thank you for watching!
Your films are very useful. Thank you
Thanks for your kind feedback and for watching
Another splendid tutorial, thank you.
Thank you for watching and the comment
For my Lightweight I have found some titanium sprockets, witch I intend to use at a time, also an 11 teeth, which will give a higher gearing. 😀
Another great video, thanks!
I like a woman who can get her hands dirty, well done great job
I'm in love with this lady!😘
Many thanks for making me smile! And thank you for watching
I‘ve never cleaned the sprockets like that. I just put the Brompton in the bathtub, use bike cleaning spray and rinse it. 😉
Is it possible (or even a good idea) to use a Shimano 14t sprocket instead of the 13t if I want a different gear ratio? Instead of using the 44t chainring I mean.
Btw, your videos are very useful and entertaining! 🙂
Also, a wish: Could you make a video about the screws and bolts that should be checked regularly? Every time my Brompton makes noises, it’s because of another loose screw or bolt. This week, it was the rear frame bolt. It’s like the Brompton is made of loose screws! Still love it though. 😄
Unfortunately there isn't a 14T with the Shimano splines that fits - so 44T is the way to go
Re: your wish - we'll try and come up with a "check regularly" list. I built my first Brompton from left over bits - and have a bad habit of not doing nuts and bolts up enough - and the rear triangle came 1/2 undone during the Brompton World Championships - made me slow down (a lot!)
Thanks for watching and feeding back
Someone else asked how to clean a bike inside - the bathtub sounds great ... though not too sure about it ;-)
brilliantbikes 👍 Oh, I can definitely recommend the bathtub method for lazy people who live in a city flat. Of course you have to clean the bathtub too, but that’s not really much work. ;)
Too bad about the sprocket, I hoped the 14t 9-spline XT sprocket might work. But I guess it’s too narrow.
@@singlecask There is a 14T sprocket to your Brompton: www.brommieplus.com/portal_c1_cnt_page.php?owner_num=c1_343119&button_num=c1&folder_id=74756&cnt_id=722086&search_field=&search_word=&search_field2=&search_word2=&search_field3=&search_word3=&bool1=&bool2=&search_type=1&up_page=1
Thanks - we have not seen that one before
Im using a brommie bathtub to clean my bike, you dont have to clean the real bathtub and all the sand and gravel, especially in the winter, will eventually clog the drain.czcams.com/video/HxFtKcGyEbI/video.html
I love the bloopers part...thanks for the tutorial btw. Good guide
I currently have 13t and 16t sprockets with a 98 link chain. I would like to change to a 17t sprocket to assist in easier hill climbs. My question is, will I be able to use the same length chain or change it to a longer one? I'm already using a 44t front chain ring. Obviously I live in a hilly area. Thanks and I love your videos.
I’m wondering if you can add a third sprocket in order to make it 9 speed and solve the problem of gear lacking on a brompton ?!
what is the difference between a BWR & SRF3?
is it possible to replace the 16T sprocket become 18T ?
I'm sure it is important to do this occasionally, but how often and why please? Thanks!
What is the difference between hub written "BWR" and "Wide Ratio" ?
Thank you for your comment and for watching. The BWR means Brompton Wide Ratio, so there is no difference.
@@brilliantbikes oh, so it's only a matter of label. Thanks for the answer. Btw I'm a bit confused while browsing for the spareparts, the one that you call as spacer looks like "sprocket washer", and what labbeled "sprocket spacer" looks like a ring with gear shape inside the circle.
Let us try and help with the confusion .... could you post the part code(s) you are looking at?
brilliantbikes SKU: ZHMW127 for sprocket washer (which I assume the one that called spacer on vid), SKU: ZHMW452 labeled sprocket spacer on packaging. Thanks for your help.
Allow me one advice. Never use Degreaser without protective gloves. It will do what the name is saying- but with your skin too. If you do this at a regular base this is quite harmful. 🚴🏻💨💨💨🌈
Thank you - for watching and for the great advice
