  • Or - how to remove / install sprockets on a Brompton 6 speed folding bike
    We would recommend using mechanics gloves! Look at the damage the cleaner can do to your hands!
    The Brompton 6 speed is rapidly becoming a firm favourite - due to the wider gearing than the traditional 3 speed Brompton
    It combines a 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear with a 2 speed Brompton specific derailleur system - providing a total of 6 speeds
    We previously made a video on the removal of the sprockets - but forgot to show how to re-install them
    So we made this one
    It's in 3 parts - so feel free to skip to the most relevant part for you
    1: Removal of the Brompton BWR6 sprockets
    2: A bit about the sprockets and how they fit / difference to standard sprockets
    3: How to install the BWR 6 sprocket set

    Circlip is never that easy. I just spent 10 minutes on it, gave up and watched your technique then did it in 30 seconds! Thank you!

    Great videos. You should complete the 3-speed to 6-speed conversion. Which I have done on my M3L.

    3:23 You made that circlip technique look so easy! For those who are struggling, I found it's useful for the middle of the clip (the not-open end) to be lodged properly under one of the smaller "tabs" so that it's less able to slip. The rest is smooth screwdriver technique to guide it right down. Perhaps a screwdriver that isn't too thick (as shown in this video) will help provide more space too.

      Our no 1 tip is to remove the tension from the chain tensioner when removing it!

      brilliantbikes finished and surprisingly easy. I had trouble getting the new circlip on, but it popped on by exactly following your method. Bracing the back of the circlip and then working the ends at the opening.
      Thanks again for the video, it really helped.

    For my Lightweight I have found some titanium sprockets, witch I intend to use at a time, also an 11 teeth, which will give a higher gearing. 😀

    I‘ve never cleaned the sprockets like that. I just put the Brompton in the bathtub, use bike cleaning spray and rinse it. 😉
    Is it possible (or even a good idea) to use a Shimano 14t sprocket instead of the 13t if I want a different gear ratio? Instead of using the 44t chainring I mean.
    Btw, your videos are very useful and entertaining! 🙂
    Also, a wish: Could you make a video about the screws and bolts that should be checked regularly? Every time my Brompton makes noises, it’s because of another loose screw or bolt. This week, it was the rear frame bolt. It’s like the Brompton is made of loose screws! Still love it though. 😄

    • @brilliantbikes
      @brilliantbikes  Před 4 lety +1

      Unfortunately there isn't a 14T with the Shimano splines that fits - so 44T is the way to go
      Re: your wish - we'll try and come up with a "check regularly" list. I built my first Brompton from left over bits - and have a bad habit of not doing nuts and bolts up enough - and the rear triangle came 1/2 undone during the Brompton World Championships - made me slow down (a lot!)
      Thanks for watching and feeding back
      Someone else asked how to clean a bike inside - the bathtub sounds great ... though not too sure about it ;-)

    • @singlecask
      @singlecask Před 4 lety

      brilliantbikes 👍 Oh, I can definitely recommend the bathtub method for lazy people who live in a city flat. Of course you have to clean the bathtub too, but that’s not really much work. ;)
      Too bad about the sprocket, I hoped the 14t 9-spline XT sprocket might work. But I guess it’s too narrow.

      Im using a brommie bathtub to clean my bike, you dont have to clean the real bathtub and all the sand and gravel, especially in the winter, will eventually clog the drain.czcams.com/video/HxFtKcGyEbI/video.html

    I currently have 13t and 16t sprockets with a 98 link chain. I would like to change to a 17t sprocket to assist in easier hill climbs. My question is, will I be able to use the same length chain or change it to a longer one? I'm already using a 44t front chain ring. Obviously I live in a hilly area. Thanks and I love your videos.

      @@brilliantbikes oh, so it's only a matter of label. Thanks for the answer. Btw I'm a bit confused while browsing for the spareparts, the one that you call as spacer looks like "sprocket washer", and what labbeled "sprocket spacer" looks like a ring with gear shape inside the circle.

    Allow me one advice. Never use Degreaser without protective gloves. It will do what the name is saying- but with your skin too. If you do this at a regular base this is quite harmful. 🚴🏻💨💨💨🌈
