  • The original Brompton derailleur system is used on 2 speed and 6 speed Brompton folding bicycles (not to be confused with the 4 speed derailleur introduced with the P Line and used on the T Line and 2023 C Line Electric)
This short video gives a basic description of how it works and some simple troubleshooting tips
Clue: Most trouble is dirt related
If you would like more technical detail - let us know, and we can make a more detailed version
    The video shows (in summary)
How the chain pusher / derailleur changes gear
    Removal of the chain tensioner
Quick clean of the chain tensioner
Removal (in place) and clean of the chain pusher
    Limit screw adjustment

Am totally new to trifolds. This one brilliant educational video had me figure out how a shifter that had no -/+ indicator window changes gears from high to low by just observing the pull of the chain, movement of the derailleur and the sprocket it jumps onto. Thanks a million and please keep it coming! God bless.

When I had bougth my new Brompton (H6LX) in 2019 I took it in my cellar and gave it an autopolish all over, to protect its paint. By that I saw that - even after only two folds, the "small clear tape" from the Factory had been worn through to the paint, So I immediately ordered a set of carbon plates for all the known week spots on a Brompton. So today I haven't got any "Brompton Scratches" on my frame, as to clearly be seen here! 😄

I just put a new chain on the Brompton ... the bike has done about 3,500 miles. Did not change the rear sprockets. BIG MISTAKE. The new chain kept pinging off the smaller of the rear sprockets; I couldn't do anything about it. Had to refit the old chain, in the end. Have now ordered new sprockets from you. Live and learn.

The way I remember is this:
      1. The Allen screw further away from the rear wheel axle is for the higher gear (high=far)
      2. The Allen screw nearer to the rear wheel axle is for the lower gear (low=near)
      3. Loosen screw to close gap between wing and idler wheel (the wing that's supposed to be almost touching), tighten to widen gap
(I have this last point noted in my Brompton Manual as it is the easiest one to forget)

Thank you. This is really helpful and so well explained and presented. My wife has a new sparkly Purple Brommie which she has named " Jennifer ". There were intermittent problems with the derailleur. When we took it in to the LBS for its post sale 3 Month check up the technician found out that the gear shifter mechanism on the handlebars was binding internally from time to time. Apparently it is not uncommon with the new style shifters.
A bit of wet and dry and some lubrication and it is working as it should.
As an aside, I'm finding this series of Video's extremely helpful and informative. From the feedback I can see that I'm one of many so I wondered if you have considered running a Brompton specific maintenance workshop day/ weekend? There may well be an unmet demand, especially if a Pub was involved at some stage :-)

      Thanks for watching
We hope that your wife enjoys her adventures with Jennifer
Next Friday - 6th Dec 2019 - we have our village Christmas ‘extravaganza’
Based on your feedback we are going to try a workshop for wheel removal / installation on a Brompton to see how that works out (even if no - one attends, as a practice at least)
If you are able to get to CHOBHAM - come and say hello - we have good local village pubs!

Tensioner cleaned (in the part washer, not the sink!) chain pusher removed, cleaned, lubed and replaced, and dog leg bolt loosened a little to promote movement... and it's still struggling. I wondered if it was struggling because it's been stored with it in '-' position, causing the spring to loose some of it's strength? Ever heard of that happening?

Could you explain how attach the spring and cable area together? I know a person who’s gears aren’t changing. Thanks for the useful videos!

one other issue i have found is that the housing for the shifter (new style) on the handlebar can create issues if its casing screws are done up too tight. It seems to limit the free movement of the shift lever, so if still stuck, i recommend trying just ever so slightly loosening those to see if it helps?

Thanks. Need to try those, bur was wondering if prob could be spring losing tension over time? My Brompt is 15+ yrs old and its still the original springs assembly. Worth a try?

Hi ! Thanks for you explanations. Didnt you inverted low gear and high gear in your explanations ? When you "Switch to low Gear" according to you AT 5:51 we see the chain tensioner goes down, wich mean more tension, therefore bigger gear and then HIGH gear right ?

Hi, do you have a suggestion for when the jockey still won't push the chain into high gear? (the smallest sprocket on my 2-speed) My problem remained after cleaning everything and the checking all the other tips in this video. It seems the spring is just to week.
