Today I´ll be talking about, if pilots ever get nervous whilst flying big airliners. There are a few things you can do to calm your nerves and act responsively in a stressful situation.
Preparation is key to face a stressful situation. Good training in the simulator and fundamental training during flight school can reduce the chances of becoming a nervous pilot.
Have fun watching the video, and it´ll be great if you could comment below how you face your fears and doubts about a upcoming stressful situation. Be nice to read how you prepare yourself ! - Věda a technologie
"What the propeller for?" Asked a kid
"It is to make the pilot cool" replied the flight instructor
" I don't think so" said the kid
"Without the propeller, you will see the pilot sweat" replied the flight instructor.
Can't argue with that
patrik streng were u in an arguement between airbus and boeing in Baltic Aviation Academy video?
Most likely
Ifly 777 Overused. Shut up.
Greg Caesar Really?
"Do pilots ever get nervous?"
Only when they're on a date with Pilot Maria.
Haha :) No not even then :)
Captain Joe Joe did u ever think about being a fighter pilot?
hi captain Joe how can i became a pilot
hi captain Joe how can i became a pilot
O Captain we have lift off!
Pilots get nervous when both engine fail.
Ifly 777 Not Sully :p
nope they gona know to crash land like a boss
Well, on cruising altitude not that much than on lower ones. Else a single engine failure is a very stressful situation as well, since you have to run a pretty long checklist, get down the weight or do a heavy landing in some situations. But a both engine failure is not that common as you might know. On early stages on flight, there are not much you can do against it. Returning to the field is not possible with a commercial airliner - also known as impossible turn. With smaller aircrafts possible but not likely to happen...
Murtaza Kandil lol yea boy! Crash like a rockstar son!
Ifly 777 have you seen the film Sully miracle on the Hudson. It's based on a real life water water landing with a duel engine failure that happened in 2009
Flies planes at 35,000 feet.
Is scared of bungee jumping. :)
@Rata 4U its because u cant see the ground. Atleast thats how its like for me.
@@enzorillotv no, it's because you are in a plane and it's currently functioning as it should.
That cause he’s inside a contain area but bungee jump theres nothing around
Anyone who's not crazy would rather fly a thousand times than bungee jumping
I get nervous for pilots. I wish I could shake their hands after every flight
Same
Yea same
Pilots get nervous when they hear
*terrain,terrain PULL UP*
Minimums lol
Gear, too low
Jsamp What? You hear minimums on every landing. What are you talking about?
@@Username-ww2cd I know that this is an old comment but you do hear terrain terrain pull up when the plane doesn't recognize that you're landing, and in some cases pilots hear that right before crashing so yes everyone will get nervous when they hear terrain terrain pull up.
There are 2 scenarios, either there is a malfunction in the systems which isn't as worrying because pilots are always handflying when landing.
The other scenario is when the airplane is going to crash in the ground, and of course this one will be worrying xD
the captain normally say: i have control.
wow
than, it makes us calm.
lol. "You have controls. I have controls. You have controls."

I just wanted to say, I'm a very nervous passenger and I'm slowly conquering my fear by travelling more. Your videos are a great way to prepare myself ready for flights. Understanding everything about a flight, just helps me rationalise them. Thank you!
I am not a pilot, I am a paramedic. This quote applies to all areas of life when it comes to controlling nervousness. "WHEN YOU KNOW, AND YOU KNOW YOU KNOW, CONFIDENCE REPLACES FEAR" In other words PREPARE!
Good
*engine catches fire*
Caprain Joe: "I'm mentally prepared for this, I'm not nervous..."
I flew my first solo cross country a week ago, and I was very very scared when I first took off. Once I landed at the first airport and got the first leg under my belt, I was really able to relax and enjoy the other two.
I think the more specific and revealing question is: do experienced pilots still get a bit of an adrenaline rush during flights (especially takeoffs/landings)?
I'm loving your video subjects! I'm sure everyone is learning from these
Thanks Peter! I´ll do my best :) Greetings Joe
Like most professional jobs where emergencies can take place. Preparation..training... Preparation.. Training. So the brain goes into automatic pilot mode [pun intended] and you perform your duties in an efficient and professional manner.
I'm loving all these videos! Just found your channel yesterday!! Have watched so many already! Have always had a love for airplanes and always wanted to be a pilot but as a 27 year old mom I feel like it's too late for me to get a start. So I'm living vicariously through your videos!
There's another thing they become nervous
Spilling water on the cockpit
CZcams TM oopsie doopsie boopsie water spilly control breaky
I remember my first landing, I was sweating so much I could hardly grip the trim wheel in Ye Olde Piper
I completely know what you mean :) Greetings Joe
Me too 😂 @captian joy
Now imagine living with general anxiety disorder😞
omg the quality of the video!! the background with the pilot cabin looks amazing!
Awesome video Captain Joe I do love watching them. There are stressful times in most jobs but that's where training kicks in as well.
For myself I am pretty much never nervous on a plane or I won't show it, I fell the crew are well trained and I know the procedures in the event of a crash or rough landing. But also at cruising altitude if the worst happened there really isn't anything you can do so why worry.
When me and my wife got married she had never been on a plane, we were in the seats next to the emergency escape and this being her first flight she wanted the window seat til I informed her the passenger by that door has a job to do if something happens, ya we switched but I also found how much I was calming her and those around me as there are strange noises when flying for the first time, but telling her what they were calmed her and the people around me which I didn't realise at first.
I really enjoy ones where you see how pilots work in the cockpit and just how calm they are, when I was young I was able to go into the cockpit and watch, I think seeing how calm they were with buzzers going off and the odd warning lights popping on. They still just sat there and pushed buttons and stuff like it was normal made me feel very safe with them. I guess that carried over to adulthood.
and i got a question for you pilot.. WHY EVERY PILOT IS HANDSOME??
You'll only spot the handsome ones outside of the cockpit. The ugly ones stay in the cockpit.
It's the bartender effect. Once they take off the uniform they become normal people.
Thanks!
Where's the handsome pilot
British beef British beef *dab* *dab* *dab*
Every pilot get nervous at some point in their life. Something odd or unexpected will happen that will test your ability.
You can bank on it.
Dan Hammond man that’s what scares the living shit out of me. I’m a flight student now but I’m so scared to know that I’d have to face one of those situations in the air
Damn it Captain Joe!! I keep saying this is the last one, then I see another one of your videos that I must absolutely watch. I'm currently 8 videos into this hole and there's no end in sight.
This is an EXCELLENT video! You are so on point with this!
Most birds fly around 100-500ft but will fly much higher during their scheduled migrations (15,000ft - 30,000ft)
Birds and Pilots fly high for the same reason: Fuel Economy. Please share the Air Space. :)
***** Some say they used to be, back in good old Soviet Russia.
Elsewhere birds power jet a1. Really old birds. Dinosaur old even. :P
Zyklon - Drake. Yes, one of the most amazing migrations is the bar headed geese who fly over the Himalayas. Many don't make it.
How many miles per gallon do Canadian geese get?
Can’t wait for Joe to become a Captain.👍😂I live in Germany and would love to meet him
Finally some breathing techniques to keep calm at the moment of the incident...
watching all of your videos! keep up the good work :)
I reaaally like this guy. Very genuine personna. Two snaps up!
CAPTAIN! Can you make a video about PILOT CONTROLLED RUNWAY LIGHTING!!! :D That would be great! I'm sure everyone would be amazed of how it works, a lot of people doesn't even know that system exists.
LIKE SO HE SEES THIS COMMENT :D
Juan Bonnett I don't even know that, thanks for the info though.. I'll research more about it
Psychopathway It's pure magic haha
Why would anyone be amazed? That technology has been around for decades.
Is that even around? My local FBO got rid of that 20+ years ago.
Mike Mac
According to the official info, my local airport has PAL on 126.7.
Question for the 120 dislikes. why?? He’s a really cool guy 😑
Love the mixture in terms of aviation-related topics on your channel! Keep it up! Xx
Captain Joe, you inspire confidence! Thank you!
Hi Joe, tolles Video. Kannst du mal ein Video über Job Security machen? Würd richtig cool sein mal deine Opinion zum Thema zu hören :)
Puuh, schwieriges Thema, aber ich schau mal was ich machen kann! Grüsse Joe
Captain Joe: do you approve that the Concorde doesn't fly anymore?
Unfortunately I do! But I wish she would fly again! Greetings Joe
Thank you so much for your informative videos answering more than just the straight-up question. I look forward to see your well-deserved channel growth, Joe :)
Thank you very much my friend, I have so many finished videos waiting. Hope you´ll enjoy the upcoming ones too :) Greetings Joe
you inspired me captain joe about handling my attitude, in conclusion i will not be successful if i dont prepare my self. The fact that you stress on what would be the outcome if i didnt preapare my self my soul my mind my body reacts to it that i would be a failure, failing is my outcome. I often watch your videos just subscribed from this day just sharing I am an inspired pilot wanna be. it became my dream i cant do anything else i know if im in the track of being a pilot i know my self will react to it doing the best the better that i can be, however if i take up engineering i know that i cant handle it because i dont like it, but if pilot math is essential also i know that i will and that i will strive hard for it to be prepared.. sorry just wanted to share thats just how i feel thank you. im still watching your vidsss
what plane have you use? hearing from your videos it seems like you used A320-A321 a lot, have you ever use 777, 787, 747 or maybe A380? if you answer it would be really nice :D
Hey :) Yes that´s correct I´m typerated on the Airbus A320 family. The other ones you´ve mentioned are my dream airplanes I would love to fly :) greetings Joe
Captain Joe thanks for answering, hope you can fly one of those someday :)
Captain Joe having an A320 type rating is still something that is amazing, even though you probably take it for granted after all those flights...
Captain Joe Captain, please make a video about math, physics and meteorology for pilots. Before videos check. Thank you.
Captain Joe well, your dream came true! Im still happy for you and your Cargolux B747. I wonder if my mail is delivered to me by captain joe? 🤔🤔🤔
great video
Cheers buddy! Greetings Joe
+Captain Joe thanks. I have a question. how hard is the crew selection process in a major airline.
I didn't realise you're German, your English accent is good enough for me to not really pick up what country you're from!
You are 💯 on this Captain Joe.
My former career required constant vigilance and situational awareness and serous injuries or death were very real ramifications for not being PREPARED.
You can’t drive yourself to a nervous breakdown trying to outthink every possible situation and outcome, that’s what insane people do.
You CAN, master your craft.
So when that situation occurs, you know every single thing you can about the (in this case, aircraft) or at a minimum, how to get that information and apply it.
I loved what you said about the evaluations in the simulator. Man, I’d WANT that feedback!
Great episode!
Hi Joe,
I'm a 17 y/o student from Germany and I've decided to become a pilot after my A-Levels. Now since I'm German, I have to do the standard tests by the DLR, which I suppose you had to do too at Air Berlin. My question is now, how did you prepare for these tests or did you even prepare, and do you really need to have only the best grades in maths, physics and these subjects?
leo666 probably yes
WHAT ABOUT SNAKES ON A PLANE???????????????
Captain Joe!! Awesome teaching - Preparation is Key!!! Thank you for the reminder and the guidance.
So informative, presented very simple and clear, and is also entertaining! Thanks too captain for being humble enough to admit being nervous but reassuring us at the same time that we passengers still has NOTHING TO BE NERVOUS ABOUT! 😍 Im always a nervous flyer! 🤣
Not so happy about the drink near the keyboard at 03:02
Robert Bolt it’s an iPad, the keyboard is removable
thats not a drink... that's the turbulence indicator 5'000'000
Good morning everyone :)
Wise suggestions, very good. I’d add the experience plays a fundamental role in out of routine situations
My sincere admiration and respect to you sir. I wish and pray that all aircraft pilots approached their jobs with the same professional demeanor as you. Blue skies to you.
Pilots get nervous when all the lights are out in the tower and on landing runways...
Joe, do pilots eat normal airline food or do they get special treatmemt with what they can and cant take through airport security
Most of us eat airline food. I very often cook my own meals and bring them to work. Greetings Joe
Captain Joe thanks joe. ive wanted to be a airline pilot my whole life and im now looking for a job to fund flying lessons, the only drawback for me is i dont like airline food.
Your Channel is amazing.
What I noticed is something that I just rarely face here on CZcams:
At the end you said "please be so kind and subscribe my channel"
Only few people on CZcams say that in this extremely polite tone, unfortunately. They rather say "subscribe and like" without even a bit of politeness. Thanks for that 💪👍 keep this channel as perfect as it is
I'm not a pilot. Not even a student of aviation but I love your videos. It's so informative
3:03 So you knew there would be turbulence, but you still set down your drink next to your computer?
Tablet*
Is there a particular airport you dread flying to and why?
No not yet ;) Greetings Joe
Good. so glad to hear. Wishing you lots of happy and safe flights. Greetings Patrick
Captain Joe Have you landed in Gibraltar?
Im not sure if this is true, but I heard a story once about how pilots hate landing in Mexico City, because the airport is in a valley so you have do descend at a pretty steep angle to get to the runway
Patrick Johnson if you said aline i would answer united airlines
Its nice to hear we have pilots that area checked upon to find their flaws and work on them,
Thanks for your videos captain! I'm currenty studing for the atpl, and i found them very interesting! Well done! Best wishes for your career and clear skyes! :)
How does a pilot get into his seat?
One cheek at a time
Jo have you an Italian background? You use your hands a lot in the video!
@Captain Joe I love planes I have watched over 100 plane crash investigation shows trying to learn as much about planes as I can. While I have never wanted to be a pilot I find what you do amazing and all I want to do is learn as much about planes as possible. Love your channel, keep up the great work.
Thank you very much for your motivating words, l´ll do my best to keep you informed :) Greetings Joe
Pensive Ruin I suggest you visit your local flight school and arrange an orientation flight wherein an instructor will accompany you during the flight and maybe let you handle the controls while in the air to let you get a feel on what's it like to fly an airplane. If you think learning about planes is awesome, actually flying one takes the awesomeness to a whole new level. Who knows? The experience might inspire you to take lesson to earn a license that could lead to an aviation career or just for the sheer joy of being able to fly.
I'm really enjoying these videos Joe. Very well explained and educational also! Subscribed :)
And i am 11 when i became big i want to be a pilot like him in emirates airbus a380 united for wild life i wish he could teach me
Elavarasi Rajapandian sorry but a380s will be long gone by 2021
Why does bird strikes cause so much damage to an aircraft engine
think of it as a clogged drain, i little rubbish could cause overflow
Franklin Loubser a bird ----> flying into an engine
cos the fan might get damage and therefore the main engine compartment , which in turn reduces the efficiency and eventually being unflyable on that engine
Franklin Loubser bird fly.bird ramp the engine.engine explode. blade broken. no power.aircraft felt down.
Yo Sup lol
Also, awesome videos. Super happy that I found your channel. I learn something new every video
From your flying school, you get advises from seniors to take Xanax, or Tranxene before flight especially in heavy traffic turbulence routes
"Pilots are just as human as everyone else". That will change in the next 10 years :)
I´m very sure it won´t change :) Greetings Joe
Thanks for the reply! What I actually meant to say is that you will most likely be replaced by machines.
Teymur Azayev I think he understands but what he's saying is that won't happen.
@@lanceriver absolutely. No commercial aircraft is going to carry passengers without a pilot on board for many many years.
You also have to add in the time for customers(passengers) to trust the ai, if an airline adopts it too quick, it may lose those wary passengers.
Joe are there more ranks for pilots than first officer and captain
Hey Luke! Yes there´s also as senior first officer which has a little more experience then the "normal" first officer, and will soon turn captain! Greetins Joe
Captain Joe thanks 😊
Captain Joe
p
Captain Joe do you think that it was a good idea to kill off the flight engineer position Joe ? thanks Sai Battu
Great video! Thanks Joe! Life lessons as well!
i love you Joe thank you for being a youtuber i find out all sorts of cool info from you keep up the good videos you are the best youtuber ever
Hello captain joe
i really appreciate your help...do you have facebook ?
+Captain Joe der in Bohnsdorf?
Carl Vogt what is that
I asked, why he sits in a Simulator for 747 when he flys for AirBerlin which doesnt have any 747
The graphics of the simulator look suspiciously FSXy!
Mikosch2 that is because it is a simulator, mate
Yep, and there's only one software in the entire world it could possibly be based on, right?
Mikosch2 X plane 11 has a pro version but I don't think the graphics are such shit ...
FSX, huh?
> Inb4 someone references AirForceProud95
Mikosch2 okci. U
Outstanding Captain! Thank you
As a layman that will never ever have the chance to even enter a cockpit. I am very grateful that you put out these videos that give me a better understanding of what is going on when I am a pax on an aircraft
Second. Joe, what airline do you fly?
He flys AirBerlin
first. hes with airberlin
a3?
Sooraj Ak he flies a A320/1
Raymond He Air Berlin :)
MR JOE HAVE EVER HAD INCIDENT LIKE CAPTAIN SULLY
The all caps is nice touch towards demonstrating how stupid this comment is.
I got about as nervous during my check as an Air Traffic Controller. It made me perform better. Well done Captain!
Hi Joe, I would like to thank you for the great work you do. Great videos. I would like to add something to the points mentioned in the video. The pilots get nervous before the Medical check. I would like to thank you once again for sharing your great knowledge.
The first time I landed it hurt my but in a piper arrow it was a little bit hard and I am only 12 and I flew a plane
*sniff* *sniff* I smell some bullshit.
Same here
What type of plane? The plane you put a token into in some of the arcades? Yeah. It sucks doesn't it.
Maybe that was mobile plane simulator..i also flied...😂😂
*bullshit* alert
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Very informative. Thank you :)
Thank you very much, means a lot to me! Greetings Joe
Another excellent video. Thanks
NEVER seen a PILOT with a channel. This is great. Have to subscribe. Good video too.
Thank you, Captain. As you said, pilots get nervous as all normal people.
Regarding to the weather, sometimes, when you arrive at the reported weather, it maybe have changed (for worse or better), but again, as you mentioned, preparation & (and for obvious not mentioned) experience (of the area´s orographic conditions, weather at any special season), reduces significantly the nervousness, and gives entrance to the actual corrections.
Nicely explained !! Keep up the good work.
Great!
Thank you Captain Joe.
Here's to efficient and effective flight training!
😘
Excellent program, Enjoy all these topic - Well done Captian Joe
I had my 3 annual checkflights done since yesterday. So relieved. The medical is also something I always worry about a little.
Nice
really loving your videos
He is speaking english very clear ! nice Videos
Thanks Joe this really helped me my biggest fear was failing the landings thanks Joe this helped so much! Wonderful video.
preparation, training and data - life essentials, too. Thank you Captain Joe, you are an excellent teacher. I am not a pilot (I only dream that I was) but I enjoy your videos very much.
My younger cousin is still in school, but wants to become a pilot in RAF like our Uncle so i think he'd love your channel. I'll recommend your channel to him! :')
What you're giving examples of seems similar to checklists.Checklist can (to some extent) be used as a psychological umbrella term incorporating any plan you've made up in advance. In "the green" this is one coping mechanism we teach. it:
Breaks tunnel vision
Allows you to evaluate and make desitions with high accuracy even during exceptional stress.
I like this video.
Yay a Captain on CZcams!!
Pilots get nervous when they hear “I have a number for you to call” from the ATC.
I love how the AI Traffic had to go around because you were blocking the runway! Nice video BTW :-)
Just discovered your channel and liked it so much I binged watch a whole lot of your videos. Clear and concise explanations make it so enjoyable to watch.
I have a question for you as a pilot. I regularly fly from Ottawa YOW to Novosibirsk OVB mostly via Moscow DME or SVO, but I try to avoid it as much as possible. My question is: Why do all airlines go around the globe instead of over the North Pole when we are almost in perfect line with each other?
Thank you I was look for something like this for a long time
Great vid as always!
Thanks buddy! Greetings Joe
The add about Alex was really cool
THANKS BRO YOUR A PERFECT ADVICER
Very interesting. Thank you.
