F-ZERO 99 - Hunting Grey Bumpers for Grands Prix

  • When I first started the game I thought of Grey Bumpers as simple hazards you have to avoid and occasionally can get an extra extension for your Power Meter. Until I started to purposefully hunt them down to expand the Meter early on during Grands Prix. Since the player carries on the Power Meter into the next races of a GP and Mini Prix, this method can give you an advantage over other racers.
    For this guide I tested the Wild Goose and Golden Fox. The Wild Goose can take bumps and hits more easily than any other machine. The Golden Fox can refill the Power Meter extremly fast by driving over Pit Areas, which makes this a very viable strategy for it. But it also works for any other glider in the game. Just take a little more care of your bumping with the Blue Falcon and Sting Fireray when you go on a hunt.
    7 KOs will extend the Power Meter to it's fullest
    I hope this helps you out!
    Happy driving

    Never really considered hunting bumpers on purpose. Sounds like a smart idea, especially on the GP because your power meter retains it size between races.

      Well, I wouldn't say it's all that easy. Kinda hard to focus on bumping grey cars while still doing well. I think it's best to try and take down a grey car if you can, but don't focus too much on it since it could end up losing you your top place.

    This is some really good tech to point out especially for goose players, balancing good opportunities mostly means doing it when you're already unable to contest first place and goes hand in hand with farming sparks. This is really disruptive to attempt on Golden Fox unless the match is already going very poorly, so if someone can get a couple KOs and still place well they should be able to get a boost advantage to beat dominant line runners pulling out in first but never gaining boost.
    However on golden fox when you do get the KO's you become basically untouchable so it still stays a high risk high reward maybe skewed a little too hard towards reward.

  •  Před 10 měsíci +18

    It's what I do, it's extremely important if you're using the Wild Goose or the Fire Stingray
    It's also pretty nice for the other vehicules but for those two it could mean that you could have some turns where you do more than one boost without being greedy

      I haven't played in awhile, but I'm still lacking a GP win for both Falcon and Goose. The Goose, might get away with a GP win without having to farm Bumpers, but Falcon, I will have to consider using the method. Only problem though, the Falcon is kinda underwhelming at times, so I have to practice this tech, and I said before, it's hit and miss for me still.
      I might have a chance now that the game is slowing down, we'll see. 👍

  • @wesnohathas1993
    @wesnohathas1993 Před 9 měsíci +1

    I've been wondering how to pull off bumper KOs more consistently. It's such a commitment to take one out from full health.
    It's certainly the most risky for Fox and Stingray to do this since Fox is sacrificing the most durability and Stingray is giving up precious momentum for a relatively low payoff due to its high boost cost.

  • @ryubelle
    @ryubelle Před 10 měsíci +17

    I'm gonna be honest, its partially a skill issue, but I feel like going for KOs (ESPECIALLY easy ones, funny enough) just results in me wasting too much time and or health and 90% of the time someone else just swoops by out of nowhere and gets it anyway. I feel like at least for me it's better to just try and get good placements, I just end up in the 50s or dying otherwise. If there was a better way to practice it than just throwing until I get good at it, I'd probably give it more thought. That being said, I'm sure there's a place for this playstyle and that this video is helpful advice to someone

    • @Master_A1
      @Master_A1  Před 10 měsíci +19

      I can see it being a little tough the first few times you try it, especially since you can't practice offline.
      It helps to know that the placements and spawns of the Grey Bumpers and Bombers always stick to the same routine, so after a while you know which one to attack if it's affordable for you.
      If you see them moving apart from each other when usually they should not, it's because other players bumped into them

      If you want to grab less time consuming KOs, look after blinking or smoking player gliders or Grey Bumpers. Players tend to move to the outside when they are weak on energy. If you spin into them, they usually should get knocked out.
      Make use of your spinning attack as a defensive AND offensive tool. Sometimes a good defence will give you surprise KOs. Also when you notice one player being low on health and they are rushing to the pit, remember their glider or name and go after them. They might lose all their health after a few attacks (unless you have to deal with a Golden Fox player, then they should be hard to crack once they made it to the pit).
      Don't spam your spinning attack and wait for the right moment if you go out on a hunt. Or else you might miss your change of a KO

      You knocked out a Grey Bumper on your screen, but another player hit it on his screen before you did, so he gets the Power Meter extension
      Lag is the reason why the game often makes the impression that you should have gotten a KO on Bumpers or even players

      I like the combos where they're directly in front of you and your own speed keeps pushing you into their back, and you rack up the needed five bumps in like one and a half seconds.
      That makes it worth it, in my opinion, in a grand prix. heck, it's a little gamble for a regular 99 race. If you can get a full refill off of an actual player, having that full refill also be extended to max is niiiiiice. But there's definitely a time, skill, and machine energy investment for any payoff, and without the skill, it's not worth it. And it's tough to get more skilled unless you dedicate yourself to hunting these things in a bunch of meaningless 99 races while you're waiting for a fun event.
      I basically use the 99 races to practice some kind of skill, either trying to keep a lead, learn where the best skyway starts are, or practice destroying things. I need the practice since I somehow got A- rank and I am nowhere near skilled enough to compete with other A- rank players. My rivals kick my ass.
      I have yet to survive an entire grand prix race, so having an extended health meter for the whole thing is kind of my top goal right now. It sucks to suck.

    • @Master_A1
      @Master_A1  Před 9 měsíci

      You invest in the first race and then have an advantage during the next races in a GP. Picking up and going for already smoking Greys is almost always a low risk investment. Keep in mind that others might spot them and go after them, so being closer to Greys or blocking the path to them can make the difference

  • @ActionGamerAaron
    @ActionGamerAaron Před 10 měsíci +1

    I've never found it worth it to go chasing these unless they are already flashing even after following this guide. There are just too many factors fighting against you. You have to slow down so much that it can take it from the lead into halfway down the pack. You're also damaging yourself the whole time and exposing yourself to being damaged further. On top of those problems someone can (and constantly has for me) just come in and perform the last blow on it invalidating all your work.

    • @BronzeAgePepper

      I do wonder how much the most consistent GP winners are actually doing this KO strat. I would guess it's most suited to Wild Goose only and everyone else just relies on observation, good driving, and a lot of luck for any KOs, and they make do with however much max energy and recovery stat they have without having to fish for more.
      Just like how if you don't start the race near the front, you can gather a lot of sparks to use Skyway and pull ahead at just the right time, but that doesn't make lagging behind at the start a good strategy.

    • @Master_A1
      @Master_A1  Před 9 měsíci

      During the early days you could go after Greys as shown in the Solo Hunting section of the video. Nowadays I only do it that excessively when I already have enough points to rest in during a GP, especially with the Wild Goose since the added Power gives it a go for many more additional Boosts. It's still in the Meta, just shifted more towards Greys that are already heavily damaged and certainly isn't recommended for full health Greys, which was mostly shown in the video to explain health of Bumpers and what's technically possible

  • @kamilslup7743
    @kamilslup7743 Před 9 měsíci +2

    It can work, or too many people can go for it at once and everyone gets only 1 bumper. Communism.
    It also doesn't get more painful than hitting a flashing bumper, killing it but the game goes "NUH UH" and you ain't got no KO's

    • @Master_A1
      @Master_A1  Před 9 měsíci

      It can be disheartening when you don't get the KO for putting in effort (and sometimes time or energy). A little bit of gambling and risk-reward sprinkled in there for sure.
      In general I think Grey Bumpers most likely have the potentionaly lowest health during Round 4 and 3, since more red Bumpers get added while Greys were driving on the road for a long time, getting bumped more frequently, especially in races with many players

      I think it always depends on the situation. Is it the first race? Do I already have a lot of points in a GP and can take the risk to temporarily lose ranks during a race to get additional safety or wiggle room for the rest of the race/races? When they don't smoke there's always gambling involved. To hunt those CAN pay off, but doesn't necessary do so. Wild Goose certainly works best as it doesn't lose too much health nor get bumped too much

  • @lukeroni

    • @askthepizzaguy

      It refills enough when you destroy them to make it worth it, and for the cost of a second or two in one race, you could have several extra boosts in all future races in a grand prix.
      2 seconds investment for being able to go 600 kph instead of under 500 for I dunno, 20 seconds worth of time, over the course of a grand prix?
      I suck at racing, but yeah. It is a strat. I've seen people use this strat on youtube to get a full health bar for race 2 of a grand prix and then win the whole thing.
      If you arent getting first place on the first race, why not get first place in the next 4 races? This strat works for that.
