For Deathwind I would almost always use it on the spot after the starting line, as there's no boost panels on the road there so it the increase in speed benefits you more. I tend to win on that track more than any other and it really is just a case of getting all the boost panels and using the skyway in that spot. Anywhere else seems to not really make much difference as everyone is boosting around anyway.
I adore how much strategy is possible in this seemingly simple game. I also really appreciate you taking the time to compare the skyway jumps in similar conditions so that it's not different due to proximity from first
Thank you so much!
Yes, it took some time to get the right footage so I wouldn't have varying results, with just the right amount of distance to the leading racer.
I didn't want to share false Skyway spots
By the way, Tetris 99 and Pac-Man 99 both look very simple, but are actually super deep games if you are willing to spend more time with them
Pac-Man 99 is gone :(
@@rogerriggii6733 In a little more than a week it will go offline 😔
Dude. You are a legend just remember that
🙏🏻
That he is. I couldn't win a race to save my life until I watched this video. I also hated Wild Goose for a while, but it's hands down the easiest one to win with.
Skyway's duration works similarly to Bullet Bills from Mario Kart and that helped me figure out quickly.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember the Bullet Bill lasting longer depending on your actual placement, compared to Skyways being depended on how far you are from 1st place.
They both can be extended with turns though and in general are very similar in nature. But I like that you still keep more control in F-ZERO 99, especially if you want to hit the Speed Pads along the Skyway and have other racers to battle before you drop down to the ground
In port town II I know that in the fire stingray at least, if you skyway at the very edge of the wall here ( 4:43 ), you will skip the curve on the left, the magnet section, the semicircle after the magnets, AND the zig zag section.
Nice video! I think one thing I'm finding out though is that depending on the situation, it may not always be best to save up for a Skyway... since anytime spent stocking a Skyway is time not spent boosting. Like, if it's a track with a lot of boost points from beginning to end (like Big Blue or MCI) and I'm in the Golden Fox/Blue Falcon with full health/last lap and trailing, then it may be worth going for a Skyway early and finishing the lap with additional boosts so I can maximise my meter usage. So, knowing how the Skyway is laid out in different spots can be really useful.
Man, this game is so good.
Bless ya for this info, I was looking for something just like this! Wish there was a way to test skyway stuff solo.
Thanks!
I agree. Having the option to turn Skyways on in Practice Mode would make research and practicing more comfortable
@@Master_A1Should have separate times for skyway on and off with each machine
@@Master_A1Wouldn't it not be as useful given how much your place changes the duration?
@@casualbird7671 The placement isn't the deciding factor. It's how far the distance between you and the current leading racer.

Master A1: "Oh Kinder, ein Uhr morgens! Zeit für das beste Video über Skyways auf CZcams!"
In all honesty, thanks for the vid. It really helps to see which spots are most useful to activate the Skyway on and this video showed them very clearly.
😂 Hahahaha
Great tips, thank you!
Amazing video, never new about the boosting exiting the skyway
i was about to say that i've got 12 wins and knew all of this already, but it's still great tips for other people, but right before that i got to the part where boosting while dropping from a skyway doesn't give you extra speed! so i did learn something new lol
Hey, that's at least something!
It starts giving you extra speed as soon as you touch the ground, but for the time of the transition, you don't get any Speed or acceleration from the boost.
Fantastic video, especially all of the info at the end!
Thank you!
On sand ocean (right after the healing strip) i found you can do a bit of a corner cut if you aim like our about to take to bend too tight and hit the wall but enter the skyway before hitting it, you move forward over the barrier and then reach the skyway after the turn so you can still reach the extention zone.
This really helps!
I’m looking forward to your tips for Queen cups
Queen Cup and King Cup will both be in one video, hopefully before November
Nice video! Fun fact: Depending on your country the name for Skyway is different. Here in The Netherlands it is called "Astral Track" :)
Oh wow! I did not know this!
Astral Track sound fantastic 😮
That's because Skyway is the patented name of an underage LGBTQPIA parade in the Netherlands.
2:36 - Cameo by Zewing (an OG F-Zero speedrunner). You can see his name above the teal Fire Stingray.
Zewing is also one of the best Fire Stingray and overall F-ZERO 99 players out there!
Oops, just noticed the typo at 6:12
It says "Don't active" instead of "Don't activate" 😶😶😶
Hey I recognize your name in game! :D Great video man! 👍 I’ve been hoping for more videos explaining how to improve at this game

Great vid
Thank you :)
Really helpful video with some pretty good tricks. Once again, Silence proves to be one of the least enjoyable track with its one useful Skyway spot lol.
Hope you’re ready to do this guide again when additional tracks are released. I don’t think DWII will change that much, nor will the MC variants, but I’m particularly interested for how bonkers the skyway might be in Fire Field, and also wonder if it’ll do the detour to get the pit lane, or if it’ll have the pit over the regular path. The latter might give some more strategy in that sense: Do you want to waste time and use your skyway later, or use it now to get a quicker energy refill?
Either way, helpful video, it was a good watch.
i love silence. making those tight turns perfectly is quite satisfying after you learn how to do it
@@voltricity1942 Fair. Still, that learning curve is much higher than most other tracks, and even then, I don’t like it as much as the other tougher tracks (PTII and FF come to my mind)
Personally I think Silence is always a thrill, starting with the narrow line surrounded by mines, while you share that space with 19 other racers, the jump that leads often to air fights, and the S turn, followed by Bumpers later on (and the red Bumpers near the jump pad)
I can do a video on the new Tracks some time next week when I find time
I will be late for sure, but I want to include all the useful ones, and experimenting (and verification) takes some time
yeah the learning curve is very high and doesn't help we don't do it much (i did the practice mode on it quite a few times). port town 2 is also really fun. i've barely played snes f zero so i haven't done fire field@@solarstorm5242
Good work.
Thank you!
dude. every time i see one of your videos it makes me realize i'm trash at this game lol
No, you aren't. You just need a little more time and practice
@@Master_A1 well, i do have 99+ wins and are S2 rank. it's just i always die on grand prixes. and all these techs are new to me
@@andybandy4662dang, I have like 24 wins and I’m S3 lol. No golden ships yet and still trying to get black for the stingray.
Thanks for the all the hard work, good editing and knowledge! Do you have a preferred racer on mini and normal gp?
Thank you! :-)
At the moment I enjoy Wild Goose and Fire Stingray the most
@@Master_A1 thanks for the reply! I was also curious of your preferred controller? I've been using SNES controller (as a weird purist) but I'm feeling like that might be a slight disadvantage compared to the precision of the analog sticks (and dedicated spin trigger) on other controllers.
@@null_stateI play almost all of my games on the Switch with the Joy-Cons. For F-ZERO 99 I do put them in the plastic grip that came with the Switch. And I use the 4 buttons to control the gliders (and a lot of L and R strafing/steering)
Something im wondering is, do you get less fuel if you use superboost through the pit area since youre moving faster, or does the pit area on the skyway somehow compensate to give you the same amount of fuel?
I just ran some quick tests and it appears to go like this:
You get the most energy from driving on the ground
The 2nd most amount you get by using a Skyway (Skyway Pit Areas are longer, yet you drive faster and don't get quite as much energy back, but still a lot)
By far the least amount of energy refill happens by using a Speed Boost on the ground
I might do more tests on several courses and compare them
@@Master_A1I’ve noticed that you can hold your brake while on the skyway and it just limits you to 400 kmh, but no slower than that.
@@Gigawood That's interesting! Something you can do on the regular road and pit area
If you're near the back of the pack on Mute City activate the skyway just before the jump and slide immediately to the left for the boost pad, you should still make it to the start/finish straight before it drops you
Yep! It's useful to activate it much earlier when are very far away from 1st place.
I could have included those spots for all courses, but I think the video might have scratched the 18 minutes mark or even more :D
@@Master_A1 haha! I agree, the tips you gave were more than enough, now stop telling other people how to get good, I can't deal with the increased competition 🤣
@@ironmanTetsuoTVHonestly I fear that the game's population will shrink drastically soon and having bots to fill up lobbies will become normal
@@Master_A1 nothing lasts forever so enjoy things whilst you can
Is there less energy refill if you refill while on skyway? Is the energy refill based on time, or based on distance covered?
less for some reason, over it faster, stop accelerating
Some pit areas in the air start little sooner because you go faster on the Skyway compared to driving on the ground (with the exception of boosts). The faster you go, the less time you spend in a pit area, and the less energy you gain back.
Unless you are almost (or completely) full on health, fighting for the #1 spot on Death Wind I or using a Golden Fox, it's not recommended to boost within the pit area.
Awesome, now you need to do the new tracks
I'm currently working on recording footage for it :)
@@Master_A1 Great !!!
Oh i'm the Wouter going KO at 7:25 because i tried Fox and got way to greedy with the boosts 😂 that was embarassing, i believe it was the 2nd Mini prix race too
9:59 They also won't drop you into sharp turns
I found that this is not always the case (but almost always). Sometimes when you are close to first (or first place when you activate the S-Boost), the game CAN drop you before a sharp turn
My only criticism is at 9:23 where the text that says “The greater distance from first place” is hard to glance at first for having very little contrast from the background.
Otherwise, this video was very informative. Thank you.
You are right. That still bugs me
I wanted to make the text bigger, but it wasn't independently changeable since it was tied to the graphic pointing to the Mini-Map
I should have tried to point it out with a different graphic, or simply a separate text
Oh my god, I just saw this in my recommended but I recognise your name! Did you used to play Metroid Prime Hunters way back in the day??
Yes, Sylux all the way! Some of us are still around it seems! 😍
What was your name in MPH back in the day? It's highly likely that I remember it
FYI: You don’t have to wait to land in Mute City I. Same results happen if you’re in the air when you pop the Skyway Boost. Just make sure you pop it after hitting that jump and you’re golden.
That's not quite right. It depends how close you are to first place. If you are too close, the Skyway won't last long enough. That's why I showed how it can go wrong (the right side of the Split Screen footage, at 0:40). I took the jump pad, then activated the Super Boost and was punished.
It's better to wait a moment. You don't necessarily have to land, that's correct. It also works while sinking after the jump. But as a rule of thumb, use the S-Boost after the jump. It will never go wrong that way.
@@Master_A1 Is the duration of the Skyway dependent on position, or distance to first?
@@alexanderbateman5581 Not the position. Only the distance to 1st. I can guarantee that
@@Master_A1 Such a weird, subtle distinction between what happens at almost the same spot. You saw something I definitely didn’t see. 👍
One thing I’ve noticed is that it doesn’t start to drain your super meter until you’re *actually on* the skyway.
Aaaaand right after you release this, the queen cup releases
Yeah, I wanted to release it earlier, but my video project got corrupted and I had to start again from scratch 😢
The timing is bad, but there was nothing I could do about it
Still hope the tips and spots can be helpful for some
I never said the tips weren't useful. But yeah, I think this is really gonna help out with my timing. I had no idea it was better to use the skyway on mute city when you land instead of in the air
Are you gonna do a video on the tracks of the Queen Cup?
For sure!
Make that a "for sure" for both Queen Cup and King Cup courses 😅😂 (coming soon)
I feel like they patched in more drop zones on some of the tracks, especially sand ocean. Anyone else noticing this?
I haven't looked into it, but they would need to update the game's version with a patch to actually change something if I'm not mistaken
there is one problem, when i keep the charge going , so cant boost, i loose my position and fall back faster. My car behaves different. today i busted the first explicit cheater i was fighting for one lap between second and first and he didnt start smoking.
Lag can play a role when you attack other players. I often spin into other gliders, and at first is looks like they crash into a wall, but then get sent back/teleport into the position they used to be before the attack.
Do you have any other evidence of them cheating? Did they keep using boosts despite the attacks they received from you?
9:48 port town 2
Id love to see a guide on how to max out the energy bar growth and have it be full
I been searching for a video with someone having it truely maxed out
This... isn't how this works. The bar is full when it's full. The skyway lasts longer the further you are from 1st place.
EDIT: Wait, I see what you mean. The health bar. I was confused a moment, my b.
@@NorthernWind0 its being human, your fine
I just want to see that rainbow bar maxed out ha ha, wonder what's beyond purple
You simply KO other cars, whether it be bumpers or actual players. So really, esentially you need to find good strategies for KOing other cars and practice to git gud at them.
Actual players will fully refill your energy, while bumpers will simply recover energy accordingly to match the extra length
@@nicocchi ya I'm aware of that much. Tho what is the max ko count, yet to see that. Ha ha
I actually did show the maxed out Power Meter in my first guide revolving around knocking out Grey Bumpers.
It doesn't say it in the video, but the max KOs needed is 5
There's also a badge for getting 5 KOs in one race
Holy shit.
Love from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
I hate Death Wind soo much it's unreal
Greetings from germany! 👋🏻
You call them Skyrails
where I come from, we call them "the uppies"
nice spots tho
NEVER use the skyway to refill your energy, because the refill rate is tied to the time you are on it and in the skyway you are going faster.
It saved my life a few times though, and usually there are Speed Pads before and after pit areas, so I think it can be helpful.
But I wouldn't recommend it, unless you are down to 0 health, for the reasons you named.
I'm a bit lazy and paste my answer from another post
It appears to go like this:
You get the most energy from driving on the ground
The 2nd most amount you get by using a Skyway (Skyway Pit Areas are longer, yet you drive faster and don't get quite as much energy back, but still a lot)
By far the least amount of energy refill happens by using a Speed Boost on the ground
10:02 Objection to that point. It MIGHT not drop you on machines/bumpers. One particular race, it dropped me on a Red Bumper.
Did you misread it or something? It says it won't drop you above gaps, not that it won't drop you above machines.

You didn't talk about the best spot on Big blue ;)
I think I featured the most useful spots on Big Blue
Extended spots due to being located far from 1st place doesn't count, because you could technically extend every single one shown in this video
@@Master_A1 I talk about right after boost regen, use skyway + boost, and you are too far.
Odd that you call them Gliders. I think they are officially known as Machines but I’ve always called them Ships
That's me just translating how they are called in the german version of the F-Zero games :D
This game is oddly addictive. I hope F-Zero GX gets a Switch port.
Imagine F-Zero GX with a proper online mode 😮
Bro they made fzero too easy with this cop out handicap mechanic just a personal opinion, still good gameplay tho
It adds another layer and definitely doesn't make getting 1st easier. It's rather more strategic than ever, because you can't use your boost while riding the Skyway, and you have to think ahead
I'm glad that the series is moving forward with a mechanic that is both helpful for newcomers and interesting for experts. It's the perfect new element, and it feels great
So far the only complaints I heard about the Skyway mechanic comes from people who don't even take their time to try the game 🤷🏻♂️
You need to use the same car to maintain accuracy.
All the spots shown in this video work regardless of the glider you are using. In fact I had side by side Skyways with different gliders, showing how the timing of the activation makes the difference.
It's rather where and when you activate your Super Boost.
@@Master_A1 Aren't they called "machines"?
@@inthefade In the german translation the machines were always referred to as "Gleiter", which translates into "glider" since they hover above the ground and can spend a good amount of time in the air (especially in the later entries of the series).

Explain to me how this is obsolete when the 7 launch courses are still in the game's rotation and all the other tips remain untouched as no patch changed a thing about how Skyways work? The video doesn't state that it covers all courses in the game, only the first 7 courses
