Thanks for sharing this video. It's a huge help. Or it's going to be once my impeller kit and water pump arrives. I've just scored a Evinrude 1971 Sportwin 9.5hp. she is in really fine condition but she's been stored away on a canal barge for about ten years. She turns over gear selector appears to be fine. I haven't started her yet but next week i will give her a go once i get hold of a priming bulb and tank.... Anyways she only cost me £50. Fingers crossed she will be a absolute belter.....Kind regards from across the pond. Manchester uk.
Sdevoll, what I like to do when I can't get the lower unit back up into the motor is, take a long break because it usually pisses me off so bad! But here's some suggestions. Make sure the impeller housing is connecting right and it's not jamming, and the top of the shaft is sliding all the way up into the power head. last thing is try moving the upper shift lever up to give more length on the lower lower shift lever where you use the little bolt to connect it. If you connected that with the upper in forward and the lower in reverse. I don't think it will go all the way up into the powerhead. Also give it a couple of tries without anything connect to make sure your lining it up right to fit correctly. Good luck, they can't be finicky and frustrating at times.
Hey No problem, glad it helped! By the way if your going to test it in a bucket or barrel. Make sure the lower unit is real deep in the water or it won't pump.
Hey Jean, you made sure you took the small bolt out for the shift link, if you did the shaft is probably stuck in the motor head. Try pulling the starter a few times, maybe it will loosen it up. Other then that you may want to try tapping easy downward on the lower unit. Maybe the shaft will pop out. But make sure it will go back in before you do to much work. Because the splines may be damaged and you'll be wasting your time.
Do you have any videos of putting it back in? I replaced the impeller on mine and got the shift rod connected again but can't seam to get the lower back up inside?
Sdevoll if your running the Motor in a barrel or bucket. The water level has to be way up past the lower unit bolts. Almost to the bottom of the transom bracket to get it suction. If everything is clean and thermostat isn't old and jammed, you may not have the impeller installed correctly. Make sure the "key" that small piece that fits between the shaft and the impeller is there. If it isn't, it will not spin the impeller. And also make sure the top of the impeller housing is connected to the water pipe.
Gene Stump the rubber port on top of my impeller housing for my water pipe seems to be slanted, as if maybe cut, but the water pipe as well is slanted at the end..wondering if that's an issue or normal. It is tough to watch them align when putting the lower unit back up and in. I have my screen cover off over the inlets, and water maybe 3-6 inches above that...not enough water?
i do not, and i think we have all been there when it won't go back in. what i like to do is, pull the starter cord and spin the motor a little to help line the spines on the shaft up. i actually just had to walk away from it and take a break and try it another time. and it worked.
I've removed the four bolts and have the linkage in reverse, but when i try to lower the bottom unit in order to remove the linkage bolt, it only comes down maybe half an inch. I see the bolt in there but its just too small of a gap compared to yours. Any tips on what might be blocking it from lowering all the way? Thanks and great video
I got a 72 Johnson 9.5 at a yard sale. Found that one of the impeller blade tips is missing. Could it have passed all the way through or is it stuck in the engine and going to cause a problem?
I don’t think it could have passed all the way through, because on the top back of the motor head there’s thermostat housing cover that’s kinda triangles with 3 bolts. Now if there’s no thermostat in there, it may have passed or broken up small enough. So I would check there and possibly leave the thermostat out and run the motor in water filled up enough to cycle the water through and check for clogs or see if broken pieces come out. Also run it all together after and check if it’s “peeing” correctly. If the water steam “pee” is warm and not boiling hot. Your good to go 👍🏻
sdevoll on the back top of the Motor there's a thermostat housing it's has 3 bolts in a triangle patter. It's inside. Be careful taking the bolts out and the housing top off, a lot of times they are old and brittle
Gene Stump thank you I'm just trying to figure out why my motor isn't peeing. Same one as in your video. Inlets and impeller are good and clean. Thanks again!
I have this motor and bought a new water pump. I can't remember which way to spin the impeller in so it going the right direction. Anyone know or is there a video on that?
Ian Reed well if your wondering which way to put the impeller in. It should be star shaped not going in either direction, just put a lil oil in it and slide it on. It will flip to the side needed
first off. so it's a bolt without a flathead slot. idk why drive socket your using. but most people use a 3/8. if you are try using a 1/4 inch drive. the sockets are slimmer. and as far as disassembling the linkage at the power head. im sure it can be done with a little "Can do" attitude. i never have, but wouldn't be skerred to do it!
well Im actually working on a 1965 johnson 9 1/2, but the motors are almost identical. the linkage bolt on mine is not a flathead, but an actual bolt requiring me to open the gap a little bigger in order to fit in a socket. there just isnt enough room in order to get in there. how hard would it be to remove the shift link from somewhere in the engine bay in order to drop the unit low enough to gain access? ive looked all over the internet for a solution but cannot find one. Thanks
Thanks for the video. I just got the same motor dropped the lower unit but am having trouble setting it back This helped a lot
Mark Pastore glad it did!

Hey man thats great! A little polishing and you’ll have a great motor! Let us know.
@@genestump9199 I most definitely will Gene. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge...I have one sitting on a stand right now that I am using two to make (hopefully) one good one.

thanks for the vid it helped a lot. btw i literally thought that was my dad when you popped in lol. gave me chills
Great Paul, glad it was helpful!

thanks for the info.i loosend the linkage bolt off and it would not come apart, now i know why

Hey Gene I have two of these and could use all the video on these motors I could get. Thank you for doing this one. I am in Houston/Cypress.
Your welcome! What’s better then one 50 year old motor? Two 50 year old motors! 🤣

Gene Stump how do I find/remove the thermostat you held up in the beginning of the video? Thank you
Ya sometimes. I don't know about all outboards but have some small HP experience.

just picked up the same engine from my uncle hopefully my will be gigin in west bay soon

Try lifting the shift handle while pulling easy on the lower unit to get a little more room. you should be able to see the linkage bolt.
No luck, thanks for the fast reply though

Cool! Thanks.
Still can't get it to pee any water..checked thermostat impeller inlets

Np!
Do you ever work on other peoples motors?
Nooooo! I thought I was looking young! Ha Ha, glad the video helped!
if you end up doing the impeller ,points or carb post more video !
Its there. maybe use a flashlight to see it? might be dirty and barely visible.

Na I actually gave up on that motor when it ran, but only has 40 pounds of compression. And traded it for a Saw Zaw 😂😂
just dont pull out the water tube with removal.....that will b a nightmare to reinstall
a got the problem with the schaft it dont wonne kam out of motor greets jp Belgium
