    I think the “peppered” effect from the .22wmr on the face of the clay is unburned powder from the NAA short barrel not really long enough for 22 magnum. Great video!

      exactly, 22 mag from a short barrel, to me is near wasted effort.
      the 25 may be a little slower (fps) but size+weight deliver more fpe.
      I'd be more interested in a slightly longer barrel, shorter drum NAA,
      shooting .22 HP's, maybe also with cross cut tips (small coping saw).

    I'm surprised to NOT see a bunch of comments saying how these little guns can't stop anyone. I have noticed that people who have been popped twixt the lookers with a 25 ACP - or even had their liver perforated with one - don't leave such comments.
    In my little home town of less than 2000 residents, murder cases were always pretty rare. I was around 8 years old when the first murder in my lifetime occurred. Some guy, along with an adult son, were going to settle a beef with another man over something, but their plans to "teach him a lesson" didn't work out as planned. The guy they were after had a 25 ACP pistol, which he shot the older of the two. Upon being shot, the man dropped toward the pavement like you'd dropped a sack o' taters. He was , to use the medical terminology, dead as a door nail prior to reaching his destination.
    His son caught the next round, but it was more of a of point and shoot thing and he caught the little bullet in his abdomen. He, too, traveled ground-ward at whatever rate gravity does that sort of thing. However, he survived the ordeal, and after two or three weeks he was able to leave the hospital.
    I don't recall either of them issuing any statements about how a 25 ACP can't stop anyone. As for the 22 rimfire, it's status may have changed with the increase in popularity of the 9mm. However, through the 20th century, it still reigned as the caliber used in the most murders.

    If I remember correctly the .25 ACP is a direct upgrade over the .22LR designed for use in the very early semi automatic pistols. Browning made it easier to feed from a magazine, slightly more powerful, have an actual jacket instead of being copper washed, and center fire. Shame technology didn’t really advance with it. With todays powders and bullet designs it would likely be on par with .32 Auto

      Personally the best combination of reliability, ammo capacity and smaller size ive seen in 25acp is the beretta. Several iterations of baby browning type pistol were very prevalent and slightly smaller than the beretta . I personally prefer the beretta action and feel over the browning. Either is smaller than any other centerfire pistol you’ll find. Neither is really much more than a close range option though as they both have tiny sights compared to today’s standard.

      Not only that, but the .25 acp being shot at the top and near the right edge, had less weight of clay pressing down and/or resisting it from the top and the right, possibly allowing it an easier time of deforming the clay, particularly on the exit. That said, pretty cool as always.

  • @OldManMontgomery
    @OldManMontgomery Před 2 lety +1

    Pretty impressive. For a clay block. As a comparative test, it the .25 ACP is impressive in its own right. But it depends on the target. As these 'mouse guns' are intended for personal defense, a shot to the body may not do much.
    Someone will protest "It can kill"; When a villain is attacking and attempting to do one damage, one wants instant (more or less) results. If the evil doer in question is cutting one with a knife, two minutes can be a very long time. Having the villain die later is pointless in this case.
    I do recognize something in this category will fit in a trouser pocket. That's nice until one needs to use the thing. About the only positive of the .25 ACP round is penetration. Not heart shots; even puncturing the heart produces a slow bleed out. Slow enough to make life difficult for the defender anyway. The alternative is a head shot and hope the brain is scrambled enough to prevent further voluntary motion. That requires penetration of the skull (not always guaranteed) and then about half the width of the brain, as the muscle controls (motor nerves) are about halfway back.
    A 106mm recoilless rifle is much more effective. But they are hard to put in one's pocket. I would suggest a compromise.
    The test surprised you? Isn't 'finding out' the whole point of testing? It worked, pard.

  • @colonialrebel9964
    @colonialrebel9964 Před rokem +2

    Agreed. I have both 22WMR NAA mini revolver and a Raven 25 ACP. The Raven may have draw backs but the center fire 50 grain bullet has some appeal to it. It's more reliable than the rim fire NAA mini revolver and it's auto loading so no more single action. Plus I get one (2 if I'm feeling stupid, 6+ ) more in the chamber. Besides grip size, the NAA really has no competition; you could hide an NAA mini just about anywhere and that is it's biggest advantage or as Trump would say "Yugest". But there are better carry options out there than the NAA revolvers; these guns should be seen as last ditch/back up gun for a back up gun/novelty. The Raven is the same size as my Ruger LCP but the slide over hangs the hand by 3/4s of an inch making it my 2nd smallest hand gun. Being however that the Raven and Ruger LCP are so close to size except for the Ruger being lighter and a higher caliber with more ammo in the mag...a 380 ACP is not a hard transition at all. The biggest benefit for "mouse guns" in 25 ACP is Price Point!!

    Many people don't realize that when they read the velocity information off the box, that the 22 velocity rating is from a 24" rifle and the 25 info is from a 2" handgun.
    SAAMI test barrel specs for 22 LR & WMR is 24". The 25 Auto test barrel is 2".

    • @rhaynesify
      @rhaynesify Před 2 lety +1

      If you look at ballistics by the inch at both .25acp and .22lr the .22 is actually faster than the .25 out of a 2” barrel for a comparable bullet weight.

    • @Bob5mith
      @Bob5mith Před 2 lety +1

      @@rhaynesify The 40 gr. 22 LR weighs 11% less than the 45 gr. 25 ACP, and is 6% faster on average in the BBTI data with a 2" barrel. But that's not the point. If you have a discussion with someone who thinks 22 LR is significantly better than 25 ACP in a tiny pocket gun, they will be quoting the 1235 fps number on the mini mag box as proof. That number was obtained in lab conditions with a 24" barrel. The number on the 25 ACP box he wants to compare was obtained with a 2" barrel.

    Most interesting and the little .25 was rather impressive. I swore off the .25 about 20 years back..now collect them the Colt 1908 VEST Pocket being my favorite and the Beretta 950BS the one I most often recommend if someone wants one for actual carry. I LONG AGO FAVORED THE .25 OVER THE .22LR DUE TO IS SUPERIOR RELIABILITY and in typical Pocket pistols the .25 is in my view the better and more effective option. People complain that it is way too underpowered but many folks rest in boot hill as a result of being struck by this little round. Being armed with a firearm beats NO WEAPON at all. This and the .32 ACP were BOTH VERY POPULAR FOR SELF Defense by the end of WW2.

  • @mfree80286
    @mfree80286 Před 2 lety +2

    The .25acp cartridge may look dinky, but it's standard pressure (25kpsi) is above the recommended maximum for the rimfires (24kpsi). Most rimfire loads are well below that... but a lot are also designed for a long gun, with slower powder and a long curve. That's why the .22mag spat a lot of it's powder, and why the .25 had a little fireball going; .22mag expects an 18" barrel but pretty much any .25acp is OK with an inch or two of barrel, very fast powders for a complete burn.
    ED: Forgot to say why. Rimfire is a blown case, it's just sheet brass. It has to be thin enough to crush the rim, so naturally it's a little weaker. Super hot .22lr out of a blowback firearm with a weak spring and light bolt will often show you exactly what can happen, it'll blow up like a balloon and sometimes rupture. You just can't push that architecture as hard as you can a good machined case head with a pocket primer and jacketed bullet.

    You don’t want to be hit by either one of these. I remember seeing charts on NA Arms website giving the velocity and energy of each of their weapons with .22 LR and .22 mag ammo. The mag always had more velocity than the LR. The “boom” from the .22 mag NAA pistol is so loud it could easily be mistaken for a 9mm, The flash at night will look like a .357. Either of these will penetrate to bone and that will cause real pain. There are no “good” places to be hit by any of these. The little gun you have with you has more knock down power than the big gun you left at home.

    I'm especially fond of the mouse guns, and have an array of .25 Autos, mini revolvers in .22 LR and Magnum, and a particular favorite, the old High Standard Derringer in .22 Magnum. I've very recently also taken a real shine to the S&W M351C, a freakishly lightweight seven shot .22 Magnum J-frame. I consider all of them entirely adequate. When used within their limitations. .25s and mini revolvers fill a particular role. They're the very last word in the smallest most concealable firepower there is. Special purpose guns, really, like the ultra light Smith. I even handload .25 and .32 ACP. There's really not much that can be done to improve .25 Auto performance. Perhaps loading it with a hard cast lead or solid copper truncated cone bullet with a sharp shoulder. I don't think expansion is what we want with these small calibers. Penetration is what we're after. Very interesting and fun test. There's also the forgotten and obscure .25 and .32 NAA cartridges, which are still made, and deliver astonishing ballistics from 2" barrels. How about a test of them?

    The exit hole for the mag was the biggest. Part of the edge drooped down and disguised the size. Ranking, therefore, should be 22LR, 25, then mag.
    The 25 was Browning's invention, and it was the smallest size he could make that would accept a centerfire primer. The primary purpose was to ensure better reliability vs. rimfire ammo. While rimfire ammo is much more reliable now compared to 1900, it's still less reliable than centerfire ammo. While a good case can be made for the mag as an EDC, the 25 will be more reliable for that purpose. Shooting autopsies also support this ranking (22LR, 25, then mag - low to high).
    Regardless of its mouse gun label, the 25 is a valid choice when attention is paid to accuracy.

    You can get 82 foot pounds from a .25 Cal , Winchester ammo. .22 LR 46 to 50 foot pounds. .22 Mag like the one you have you can get around 100 foot pounds with selected ammo .
    Compare too the .41 short out of the derringer , when loaded in it's time period was good for 111 foot pounds not 52 as some charts say , that was reduced strength ammo .

    The barrel was too short for the.22 mag, most of the powder just left the barrel unburnt so it didn't have much power. Also, the first two rounds left cavities at the rear of the clay making it much easier for the .25 auto to open up a larger cavity in the clay. It would have been much more accurate if a separate clay were used for each bullet but the.22 mag would still be at a disadvantage because it was never ment to be shot out of such a short barrel

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 Před 2 lety

    • @kirkboswell2575
      @kirkboswell2575 Před měsícem

      @modelnutty6503 - I will disagree with the "gimmick" label. Yes, the mag is set up for rifles. Yes, there's a lot of unburned powder when used in short barrels. However, even so, it still produces better ballistics and energy and on target effect than the 22 lr. Therefore, it is worthwhile even though inefficient. Plus, they now make mag ammo designed for short barrels.

    That was very interesting, I expected eimilar results from the 22 and 25, maybe Eben slightly better from the 22, the 22 mag I expected a lot more but in that short of barrel it just didn't have the time to burn the powder. Very interesting results nonetheless, it definitely altered my opinion a bit, although I believe the 25 is a lot better cartridge than people give it credit for, there's just not very many guns chambered for it that are actually any good, the best would probably be Beretta and colt, and I don't even know of any 25acp rifles but I think from a 16" barrel it might be somewhat impressive

    The 22LR uses a gilded metal or pure lead bullet and it will expand at LR velocities. 22 Magnum uses jacketed bullets so the bullet does not deform and expand like the 22LR.

    Frankly, I was surprised by the apparent superior performance of the .25 ACP. I have seen comparison tests of .22LR and .22WMR in ballistic gel, and both the .22's came out ahead, the .22LR by only a bit, but the .22WMR much better. I think they used CCI Mini-Mag for the .22LR. I bought an inexpensive Sterling pocket pistol in .22LR and have never experienced a misfire or failure to eject/failure to chamber, after about 300 rounds. My only problem with the .25 ACP is the cost of ammunition, way more expensive than .22. Thank you for the video, it was enlightening.

      Hornady used to make 52gr xtp’s. Coupled with a magnum primer and the right amount of bullseye, it was worthy of 12-14” of penetration in gel. But in factory loadings, it would barely break 6-8”. It doesn’t have enough velocity for proper penetration.

    A hole right trough will bleed a lot, so for self defence I would choose the .25, just för more reliable "ignition" both .22 lr and .22wmr has more duds than a good quality. 25, but for a better gun I would rather have a slim .32 ACP, but a tiny .25 in the pocket beats a gun left home. I would love if some of the bigger brands could release slim .25/.32 guns with 3 and 4in barrels, I know thar Beretta has some, but they are not slim, as a Russian PSM.

      I've owned many 25 autos over the years including 2 Baby Brownings (Still have) a Bauer (Copy of a Baby Browning) Beretta model 20, Raven, and a Tanfoglio Titan. While many have no trouble at all with the Bauer it was the only 25 I couldn't rely on. Tried all the fixes I could think of but it would rarely fire an entire mag without jamming. For a thin 32 ACP I have a Kel-Tec P32 that is 100% reliable no matter what the ammo it is fed. I added an Armalaser laser and loaded it weighs about 10 ounces and is so thin its for the most part invisible when concealed. The Kel Tec P32 isn't all that easy to shoot well at longer ranges. It is really intended for about 15 yards max to hit a 3'' -5'' target and when I really concentrate on the long trigger it will hit a 3''-5'' target at 15 yards.
