This video shows the super exclusive Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset bootable tools created by Microsoft. It is normally only available to certain Microsoft volume license customers, but I was able to get my hands on it. I go over what it is like to create the image, as well as the tools themselves.

Several people have asked what the point of the video is, if most people can't use it.
1. It's just to show you a cool thing. And like I said, it's not necessary anyway, as there are plenty of bootable tools that do the same thing.
2. I should mention if you work at a company that has volume licensing or Visual Studio subscription, you might be able to ask your IT guy if they actually do have access to it and are willing to give it to you.
3. Apparently there are older versions of DaRT available if you Google for it, but they are not official sites or from Microsoft, so do so at your own risk.

Microsoft didn't make this toolset. They bought out a company that made all these tools many years ago, and have made minor changes to make things compatible with the latest versions of Windows. That explains why the search works - because Microsoft didn't make it.

hiren boot cd (or usb image), especially older versions that had full versions of some software, is a life saver. and using it, with ventoy, and a bunch of other ISO images is awesome.

I'm not sure if they still use this, but back in the day when I worked for Geek Squad, they had a utility suite called "MRI" that actually had a number of really useful tools on it. It'd be cool if you could get your hands on a copy of that. Definitely not freeware, but still interesting stuff.
I found a copy from around 2020, it's not the most recent version unfortunately. I'll share my findings after I scan the ISO.
My relatives have stopped calling out Geek Squad, since they found out that I can use these various rescue thumb drives to fix their computer problems for free.
Why can't it be a FreeWare Tool for everyone who has problems using it???

This video whets my appetite, but it would be nice if Microsoft could make something like this tool generally available. I have my own set of tools (most of which came from your previous videos on Ventoy and rescue USB drives to have), but to have them in easier-to-use versions would be a really good thing

Well, they could have just put those tools on the installation ISO. Like Linux does, where literally every Linux installation can be fixed with it's own installation ISO.

The reason for the WIM file is to be used in WDS (Windows Deployment Service) as boot image, to boot a PC via network to that tool. (PXE)

Msdart was great back in the w7 days when I did computer repair, rolling back updates, fixing boot issues, and password resets were my main jam. Now with w10 it's just a ton of windows resets

I used dart to troubleshoot Windows OSD in Windows PE, remote controling the clients. That I did already 2015. DART is a software that one can not live without as a computer engineer.
Autoruns also has a list of drivers, so you don't need the MMC snap-in for that either.

In Windows NT drivers function as Kernel Mode services which is why drivers and services are so similar here. Usually only a driver writer would need to alter the service parameters of a driver and they do that in the driver inf or just by editing the registry so in a normally working system there is no need for the drivers management console.
I believe for remote connection it is required to use a program on the msdart package. Been a while since I used this feature I can’t recall if it is like a Remote Desktop environment or whether it’s just the drives are mounted over network.

DaRT is really old, 2006-2015. Maybe it is still being offered, but now everyone uses medicat or other options.
14:00 The drivers is a services.msc-like list of the drivers. Windows NT 3.1, 3.5, 3.51 and 4.0 had that list, Windows 2000 then introduced the Device Manager, that DOS users got since Windows 95.

I know it ain't pretty but I wimlib great for deploying wim/ESD files and outright overwriting windows folders or resetting the registry hive to deploy base, might just be licensed tape but if you have no fear of CMD it is a powerful beast.
It's also worth noting that the newest version of MDOP is from 2015 and its extended support is ending on April 14, 2026. So it's likely that Microsoft discontinued it. It is possible to find the ISO online. I obviously can't share any links but here's the SHA-1 checksum for the ISO: acd095c74a23fa67c9787a9c4014cb278b5b520c
not too impressed at first. But if your computer wont boot, or it is just to awkward to switch back and forth between the recovery environment and windows, it could save some time. And being able to include your own programs or scripts that would be useful to be able to run in the recovery environment could be pretty cool.

Will it help to recover files from a Bitlocker encrypted drive without the key? I had to format a friends laptop recently as he didn't have the Bitlocker key n could not log into windows

Security, could you do an extensive setting analysis on Defender firewall and how to save a stack-based setting to OneDrive. Setting the Defender firewall takes forever. How do you save the file. Am I missing a file extension 🤔?,Export ? How do you easily revert to your custom firewall after a reboot. This would make my life so much easier! 😊 ty

one of the things i need to remember for specifically my pc (which has bitlocker or veracrypt system partition encrypted) is that when i reboot and it doesn't find the OS, I have to use a program to reset the bootloader. I use the one that macrium reflect offers - iirc they recently said the free version is no longer going to be updated so i don't know if they will mess up my free install - which resets the bootloader and allows me to reimage the boot drive and start over
The other is you glossed over that the US department of defense advocates for a 4 pass wipe on a hard drive. is that *really* necessary? I feel like a single pass of random data is sufficient, and personally what I do is delete everything in the drive, then do a full disk encryption (not quick format) with a ridiculously long password. Then I just recycle the hard drives. I don't see the point of having the drive written over 4x times.

The reason for doing multiple passes for a drive is because data can still be recovered via software. Using recovery software, I’ve personally been able to recover data from drives that amount to more total data than the drives capacity.
More passes makes it harder for data to be recovered.

I have a line of dead pixiels that seems to grow, its grown drasticly from nothing just today first in a single line and that line is now gaining extra rows and bits.
Previously i also have a spot on the right hand side grow up spread out and up along the top of my monitor from 20 to 1 pixiel long in places with most of the thickness being around 5 pixiels wide.. its outta the way though so i ignored it, but the new one is in the middle of my screen.. its a cheap tv though.

You need the Windows SDK (Software Development Kit) for the Debugging Tools, not Visual Studio ;)...
🤔 My one concern with such a software would be for trojans less tech-savvy people might view as useful and "something I wanna keep".
