I think the .app folders have always existed in OSX, I even remember seeing .app folders in OS9 or OS6, I don't fully remember but its older than OSX. Also, APFS is still brand new, before that we had HFS and HFS+.

I thought alternate data streams were relatively well known. They're a super fascinating feature of NTFS that you don't really see in other filesystems. Alternate datastreams can be detected without a problem. I know you can see alternate datastreams in TreeSize Pro, which I use very often. However, I believe you can actually put an alternate datastream in the drive root and it would be completely hidden, like you can write a file to C: and it would be undetectable.

(It's also not an acronym, but if it were it would still be pronounced loo-uh, because acronyms are when an abbreviation of initials is said as a word, like SCUBA or AIDS. When you spell it out, like DNA or CPU, it's an initialism.)
