San Gorgonio Winter Ascent: Tallest Peak in Southern California

  • San Gorgonio Mountain is the tallest peak in Southern California. At 11,500 FT it towers over the surrounding peaks including Mt Baldy and San Jacinto. Climbing over 20 miles and 5500FT to the summit, the standard San Gorgonio hike to the summit is tough even in perfect summer conditions. While we've enjoyed hiking this peak several times in the summer, we never before had attempted to hike San Gorgonio in winter conditions and wow... was that tough! While the snow, ice, and slushy terrain made the trail conditions a challenge, a clear day in winter on San Gorgonio is a hiker's dream! The views to the surrounding southern California mountains were unreal, the trail peaceful, and the San Gorgonio summit views 100% worth the climb!

    San Gorgonio is my favorite mountain. I grew up in Beaumont throughout the the 70's and early 80's. Beaumont means beautiful mountain. Beaumont is the only town that truly deserves that name, thanks to the south face of San Gorgonio looking down on us.

      That is very cool to know -- both about Beaumont's name and that you grew up there! It really is a beautiful mountain, and I bet you loved playing in the snow up there as a kid. What a neat place to grow up, with such immediate access to both desert and mountains! ❤️

    Gorgeous bobcat! I think he was your good luck charm. My sister and I just got back from three nights in a VRBO in Desert Hot Springs; she treated me in honor of my birthday, which was yesterday. Tuesday we took the aerial tram up to Mountain Station, and we hiked one and a half miles at that altitude! She’s 64 and I just turned 72, and we’re both out of shape. We really took our time and we did it! I was so proud of us! From our house out there, we could see both San Jacinto and San Gorgonio; what a view! You guys inspire me; so proud of Adam for pushing through: I could see you really struggling. Great video!

    Great climb! Ive only seen two bobcats in the wild. One was from way up high on a ridge and the bobcat was cruising along a riverbank... good but not heart pumping. The second was one like you had, I came around a corner as a bobcat had been stalking a squirrel. The squirrel saw me or the bobcat and started to run, the bobcat took off in hot pursuit. the squirrel ran up a tree and the bobcat followed, but as it climbed the cat saw me an stopped. We just stood there looking at each other for a few seconds. Then the bobcat just pranced off down the trail. Totally magic. Wonderful you got see one out there, too!

    Your videos mean so much to me. I discovered your channel shortly after a really bad back injury last September where I am having to relearn how to walk with an estimated 2 year recovery before I can start to hike again. Hiking is my everything and not being mobile has been extremely challenging for my mental health (I hiked 500km in 2021, and it saved my sanity in lockdown). Your videos have been a light for me over the last several months. I also discovered Via Ferrata because of you two! I am so excited to try it when my body is capable.

Very sorry to hear about your back issues, but know that both of us have gone through similar things where we were out for very long periods of time and concerned that we may never be able to hike again. So we really mean it when we say that if you stick with your rehab and take it one step at a time, you will be back out doing what you love, and that’s what matters ❤️

    When I was in my younger college days, my friends and I of about 12 did an overnight backpacking trip up San G. All of us came over packed, unprepared, and most of all, I was way overweight and out of shape. We stopped at one of the designated camp locations a bit past halfway. Half of my group went to finish the hike to the top while the rest of us including myself were to beat to continue. Unfortunately, us half that stayed down had no intention of going to the top as I think it was several more miles so I don't get the claiming rights of getting to the top of San G. If you haven't looked already, you should check out the 6 peaks of Southern California. San G, San Jacinto, Cucamonga Peak, Mt. Baldy, Mt. Wilson, and San Bernardino Peak. It's a nice goal for hikers in SoCal. I have finished Mt. Baldy (I actually hiked Mt. Baldy twice, I don't know why but I did on two separate occasions lol), Cucamonga Peak, Mt. Wilson, and Mt. San Jacinto (which is arguable the hardest). I'm not sure if I'll ever hike again to finish San Bernardino Peak, but San G is definitely on my bucket list. Also, hiking in the winter is crazy! Mad props to you. I'm the opposite. When I did San G, Mt Baldy, Mt. Wilson, Cucamonga Peak, and Mt San Jacinto, I did all of those dead set summer and it was awful ol.

    Two weeks sick in bed straight to twenty miles and a mile of elevation gain. Sure why not? Yike!
    Yes Adam I'm one who can't do that trek with even months of training. I've been above 12,000 feet to continental divide in jungle boots up a glacier and down in the dark on a whim, to to the top of Jacinto and Baldy (both more than once) and many others, climbed Whitney east face and other 14er out there but those twenty miles always kept me off of Gorgonio. Reason, neck injury and life constraints so thanks for the 2d view at least.
    Gorgonio gave me an awesome gift though. Hiking the north side on a cloudy and thunderstorm day. Headed towards a ridge I could see and hear lightning. Timed the visual and the sound. Yep it was moving toward me so I descended to center of the vale with a nice stream and sat under the trees. In moments a giant boom came. Bark showered down on me. Holy WOW.

    ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. Beyond the snowy landscapes which are superb, I felt this hike as that of ADAM's suffering who is coming out of illness, but for him it looks like a rebirth under the benevolent eye of a Lynx guardian of nature. ADAM you give us a lesson in courage and humility that touches us, and thanks to ELISE who encourages you and watches over you, you have overcome all difficulties to reach the top. Hats off to you, sir ! Kisses to both of you. DAN
    ELISE et ADAM un bonjour de France. Au-delà des paysages enneigés qui sont superbes, j’ai ressenti cette randonnée comme celle de la souffrance d’ADAM qui sort de maladie, mais pour lui ça ressemble à une renaissance sous l’œil bienveillant d’un Lynx gardien de la nature. ADAM tu nous donnes une leçon de courage et d’humilité qui nous touche, et grâce à ELISE qui t’encourage et qui veille sur toi, tu as surmonté toutes les difficultés pour atteindre le sommet. Great job on the summit. I love the way you both were able to persevere when it feels like you are suffering a lot. • @jaredempey5706
      @jaredempey5706 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @LiveHardxLoveHard Lassen is on paper a 6 mile road snowshoe approach (with a possible bypass in the afternoon for avalanche) then 2.5 miles on crampons from Helen Lake to the summit. Mount Rose is at first following the summer trail (if you can stay on it) and a slog to the base of the peak using snowshoes. Then, I used crampons going up the south face of the peak via a snow filled gully with the possibility of class 3 climbing on a rib of the gully. Rose is pretty intense though but the views of Reno and Tahoe are really good

    Honestly Adam, I would have been fine "motivating" you to turned around. But, I know, the summit and the vid were too near done. But, if it was COVID, your metabolism is likely already on the job of respiration recovery and just needs time rather than an altitude challenge. Guess we now know that you get oxygen from eating Pop-Tarts at altitude.
    I knew a bobcat for a bit when I lived in a cabin. It was dark grey with short fur which amazed me. I called the nearest ranger station and they said, "No, it is not a lynx." Evidently they get their yellow camo coat in their second year and are dark grey short hairs as yearlings. So he'd just sit their licking himself in the clearing in front of my porch and I'd stand motionless behind a clear story window watching. The musculature visible through its short fur was amazing, just rippling tail to ear. Then, one day it looked at me as if it had noticed me for the first time and *bam*, it hit the bushes like a black streak of lightening. That was the last I ever saw of it. I figured it had matured enough to no longer care for my company. I hope it had a good life.

      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks Veronica! Oh sorry we should have clarified -- it's 10 miles each way, so 20 total. Yes we took the same way down, but it was very different descending because the snow got melty and really slick as the day went on. We wore snowshoes most of the way to avoid sinking in too far once the crust got soft, but then they basically turned into skis on the really steep parts. There were quite a few slips and slides, and the down was a whole adventure unto itself! It took almost as long as the up, so the whole hike was about 12 hours total. ❤️

      Running Whitney was a challenge, the switchbacks there were sections that got harder because of the camber slope and some snow and ice, but I just walked through there and had my micro spikes ready when I needed them. And I ran much of that as I could. I slowed down when I got to about 13,000 feet as I started to feel it, seem like everything was moving in slow motion and harder to move in slow motion :-) a little discombobulated. but the descent relieve those symptoms and then those last bit of switchbacks before you get to the portal, the sun just said, and I had my headlamp on a more dim setting, letting my eyes adjust and as you know, there’s some rocks on that last part of the trail, and I came around to turn, and there were two ladies in hysterics waving their bear bells, yelling and they shine their bright headlamps into my eyes as I was running and I couldn’t see for a split second and kicked a rock, and that took me down for a little roll, my toe is pretty sore and they were so nervous as they thought they saw two bears set of eyes, but it turned out. They were, dear that I had startled to push them down the trail, and they scared those ladies, so I walked back the last 2 to 3 miles with those ladies, but all in all, it was a good first time at doing Whitney.
      Grand Canyon R2R2R looks and sounds beautiful to do, interesting. It’s on both of our list for this year. Are you going to run from the south to the north? I was thinking about going that route and staying overnight in the north side Lodge, and then returning back south the next day. If you have any good beta GPX files or any insight, I greatly appreciate it, and would share any of my data as well. Thank you, Adam and Elise. Hope you guys have a nice Tuesday and you’re feeling better after being sick, I think I’m battling some microbes today as well.
