I am Dutch and I hate old Amsterdam cheese. Only young creamy cheese that you don't have to chew on with a very mild taste please. And it is customary to drink tea or milk at your breakfast. A glass of juice is not typical Dutch. Some take a juice before breakfast.

Haha it tastes quite different! Yeah we generally do, for breakfast and lunch, quite a bread culture haha :)
jodynh that is not quite true.. we do combine things on our bread... like cheese, lettuce and honey... peanut butter and 'hagelslag', cheese and ham, salmon creme cheese and lettuce.... and so on... and Pretty much everyone I know does this, not just me ;)

With knife and vork? I know maybe one person that does this and she's considered crazy. You fold it and eat it, or put another slice on top and cut it.
Oh and btw, I and a lot of people I know combine ingredients. I love peanutbutter & jelly, or peanutbutter & hagelslag.

I am part dutch, my dad was born in the Netherlands and came over when he was 2. I am first generation american for his side of the family. I love Hageslage. When I was little, I had it both at my grandparents as well as at my own home. I have eaten that on bread as well as rusks.
Nice fact speculoos isn't gingerbread is is maybe older (exists longer) because we eat it every sinterklaas it is much older then Christmas so it is old.

haha, een nederlander in het buitenland heeft altijd een andere kijk op nederlands eten ... ;-) Maar mijn groodste favoriet is ....... gevulde speculaas ...... daar kan je me echt 's nachts voor wakker maken !!! :-p
Het is speculaas gevuld met amandel spijs .... een speciale koek voor het sinterklaas feest .... dus alleen in oktober, november en december te koop .... daarom is het dus ook veel minder bekend.

As i've been to the Netherlands so many times there are foods I love and hate.
I'd love to see the reaction to these foods listed below!
Things I really love - Bitterballen, pannekoeken, poffertjes, stamppot, stroopwafels.
Things I hate - drop and nieuwe haring and drop.
Good video. Interesting breakfast items. You Netherlanders are not much into croissants or baguettes I guess? Too French, eh? ;) The dark bread with old cheese thingy looked okay. But where's the bacon or ham? ps: Ya might try some fruit jelly or jam with your peanut butter spread...you'll like it I think. :)

John O'Mill I'm not sure to what extent it's really popular, but you can get it at about any supermarket
Don't think it's a local thing I know a lot of people that just don't care for them, that much. It went a bit out of fashion too. So you might not see it that often. Some people put speculaas cookies on their bread wich is the same thing realy and cheaper, we like cheap :P. I don't like it eitherway. So I never have it in my home, part from the speculaas cookies. I do like them with some dutch 'english' tea in the afternoon.

I am not from the Netherlands but Iive right across the border typical dutch for me is a frikandel ,krokett ,Saucijzenbroodjes, Hollandse stamppot met rookworst, appelflapjes and kibbeling .

BTW old Amsterdam isn't old cheese, it's "artificial" aged cheese. But still very good

Hi! Nice video! One thing: I think that Old Amsterdam Cheese is not an official old cheese. They add a flavour to it to make it taste like old cheese.

Yes. The taste is actually really good.
Real old cheese is Goudse kaas, but if you want something super special go for Overjarige brokkelkaas! Most Dutch however eat Jong belegen or Jonge kaas. It is more versatile: you can make Kaasdromen (baked cheese sandwiches) or Tosti's or Pizza's with it as well.
Eat well in England or Australia, eat breakfast 3 times a day. Dutch is ok if you're on a diet. You never have pancakes for breakfast?

There is no typical Dutch breakfast. Eat what you want and when you want to eat it.
"Dutch Breakfast"?.. you totally forgot Oatmeal Porridge.. which i eat every morning, with sugar and a touch of Cinnamon.. Yummie!
oatmeal porridge isn't traditional dutch, there are a lot of countries here you can have oatmeal as breakfast. The same goes for cornflakes

There are a lot of videos of foreigners eating Dutch food, but I haven't seen a single one showing foreigners eating at a Dutch Indonesian restaurant. You should take your friends out for a nice rijsttafel.

I reckon a lot of English speakers would be put off by calling cheese 'old': we'd usually say 'mature'. I do like a Dutch ontbijt! Lots of cheese, nice cold meats, great bread, en hagelslag (pur!), topped of with a strong, black coffee 😀 [my autocorrect wanted to change hagelslag to inshallah!]

Do the Dutch ever eat pancakes, waffles, or sausage for breakfast?
Not realy, we don't usualy eat warm breakfast. Maybe a kooked egg with bread or crackers, but that's about it. There could be exceptions, though. Pancakes are for lunch or yes, even for dinner. Waffels is a treat normaly. Like a cookie. Sometimes a desert with icecream or vla. (dutch desert) And sausage and bacon, (unless the bacon is smoked wich can go on bread), goes with dinner also.
@ Some Person: Not traditionally, but they might adopt food from different countries they have come across. We eat pancakes as a simple dinner, mostly when there are a lot of kids. Waffles are not really popular, that's more of a Belgian thing. Most Dutch eat a cold and simple breakfast although oatmeal porridge is still eaten as a breakfast, mostly in the winter.

Leuk filmpje, maar een punt van kritiek. Oude kaas is niet typisch Nederlands. De meeste Nederlanders eten jonge of jong belegen kaas. Dus het is niet bepaald typisch Nederlands.
In my opinion the cheese AND bread you used is shit. (sorry no offense)
Sorry but that´s just how I feel. Steps for enjoying you meal:
1. Use bread from a baker. It's so much better than anything a supermarket will sell.
2. DO NOT USE PRECUT CHEESE. It's disgusting and a crime to humanity.
