Installing a torch-down rubber over an existing rubber roof is a task that requires some expertise in roofing. It is essential to ensure that the existing rubber roof is in good condition and is suitable for installing the torch-down rubber. Here are the general steps to follow:
Clean the rubber roof thoroughly, removing dirt, debris, or loose materials. This will ensure good adhesion of the torch-down rubber.
Inspect the existing rubber roof for any damage or cracks. If there are any damages, repair them before proceeding with the installation.
Install a base sheet of torch-down rubber over the existing rubber roof. This base sheet will provide a smooth and even surface for the torch-down rubber.
Install the torch down rubber in strips, starting at the bottom of the roof and working your way up. Each strip should overlap the previous one by at least 2 inches.
Use a torch to heat the underside of the torch down rubber as you install it. This will melt the adhesive on the bottom of the rubber and help it adhere to the base sheet.
Press firmly on the torch-down rubber as you install it to ensure good adhesion.
Once you have installed all the strips, use a roller to press down on the seams and ensure a tight seal.
Finish the installation by installing edge flashing and sealing around any penetrations or vents.
Following proper safety procedures when using a torch, such as wearing protective clothing and having a fire extinguisher on hand, is essential. If you are not comfortable with this type of work, it is best to hire a professional roofing contractor to do the job.
