Tony Coleman drummed with blues legend B.B. King for decades. Here are a few of the things he learned from the man who was like a father to him:
“He taught me not just how to play the blues, but how to be a decent human being. It came across in his music that he always wanted to please people. It wasn’t about pleasing himself, it was about pleasing the audience. And musically, he liked the drummer to push him to be like a heartbeat, a pulse. For instance, in the song [in this video], B.B. liked to feel like the heartbeat was inside of him, not just behind him. The shuffle had to be consistent. He didn’t like the shuffle to drag and to pull. If you’re on a horse riding, and it’s galloping, he didn’t like the gallop. He liked the run. People say well, did he like to play behind the beat or in front of the beat? No. Play on the beat, play the beat on the beat. Don’t drag it, don’t pull it don’t push it, just make it consistent. That’s what he always liked, even in slow blues.
“B.B. was very sincere about teaching me and all of us that ever played with him, how he wanted to be presented as a blues man. Not drunk, not acting ignorant and stupid. Because it’s not just about the music, it’s about black American culture. The blues is the black man and woman’s gift to the world. And it’s about the culture of the music, not just how to play technically. This is like an indigenous art form, the blues, and he wanted me to share it with you.”

Rock and metal music would be nothing without the blues, thanks TC and drumeo
Well said.
I agree
@@DrumeoOfficial Awesome video! So great you were able to book this guy!
I first heard B.B. King when I as 15 (1967). I as already drumming in bands but hearing him was a voice from on high. I went fro being a teeny bopper to a musician in that moment. Thank you B.B. and T.C.
He teaches not only drums not only music but most importantly life lessons. How to be real, authentic, genuine and charismatic in front of people. True emotion. Thank u. We need more people like u
Why is it important? Life is meaningless.
@@krioni86sa well i guess u havent arrange your shit. Thats why u thing life is meaningless. Life is a gift man. U should be thankful. Next day u or a close one of yours might not be with us. U dont know
The shuffle, easy to learn, takes a lifetime to master. Great video, can’t wait to see more from Tony.
Great video...What a lesson to have this man talking
love this dude he is a great drummer and a great person
LOVE these stories! Please keep them coming as they are SO very important to keep this music alive! Thank you Mr. Coleman for your candid & entertaining commentary! Thank you!
BB King is awesome. I miss him.
I met you at the BB King Museum groundbreaking and we talked for a while. I asked you about the DW, dual drum pedal on your kit, You basically said you didn't know anything about it and that the sponsor provided the drums and the drum tech and set them up for you. lol. So, I got the idea that you were about PLAYING the drums and not so much about the hardware. You were very friendly and it was a pleasure to meet you and so many other friends of BB's. BB Himself was one of the nicest people I've met. He treated me like a long time friend.
"That Snare Hand" Is like "A Whip" " thick end of stick" brutal on the skins"" Fantastic kit, Man he can play,
Getting the right pocket the Pacaso of blues beat the whole song.
BB was the first guitarist I really got into. I got to meet him in Glasgow, shake his hand and got an autograph.......( think it was Independence Day).that was my ultimate buzz from a lifetime of music and I’ve met loads of musicians. Still my favourite now. I am in awe of the legend. Every concert was a true event, nothing like it and all pure class from start to finish. Thanks for this video from Scotland
So much of the greatest art from the past 100 years come from or ARE the Blues. We owe so much beauty to this art form!
Thank you B. B. R3N
Watched him play with BB. for years and I always loved his tight snappy shuffle. It's not that loose type of feel. His grooves are tighter than 2 Coats of paint!!!
Respects from spain 😎, long life to good drummers.
Where is Spain located? Why is it important to live long life for drummers?
Thank you for the ride memory lane T.C. and wonderful memories they'll ALWAYS be! Love you and Miss you.... Your Little Sis.... voice imitation is on point!!!🤣
OH YEAH!!!!!!!!
I like this guy. Tony a blues drummer that I cant get enough of him. He is right on the beat with taste. Love it.
I mean how special was this! His anecdotes about BB are priceless. Amazing skill .
OMG I need this lesson back in May! Those fills on the snare! So King smooth. And when he comes back in slamming on the snare and hi-hat. I gotta practice that stuff a lot!
...a gift...i will remember this word forever. Thank you
Could listen to this all day that snare tho! RIP B.B
Love hearing about this. Love the impression too. Good deal!
I was doing some things right but didn't know it until I saw a film of Tony. LOve the guy.
The Black man and woman’s gift to the world, it’s the gift that just keeps giving. Geez how lucky is the world? 😊👏
Yes, indeed!
Greathings from Indonesia.....i love blues.....i hope so many like blues music in indonesia
Amazing!
Saw Tony at my guitar teacher’s show before everything shut down. He seems awesome
Amazing player. Inspired to play those shuffles tight.
Awesome chops.. feel.. grove.. sound.. 5 *****
Saw Tony play with BB around 2010. He was amazing to watch. That show was the best lesson I’ve ever been exposed to. Tony showed absolute respect to BB by the way he played/supported the music. Everything TC said in this video about the way BB wanted his audience to experience his band and his blues music was shown 150% the night I saw them play. I recognized that immediately. Great work TC.
ドラマーってのは出音だけでなく、ビジュアルやフォームによる芸術点でも評価されるパートだと思う。そしてこちらのドラマーは芸術点も満点だと思う。
Legend! Thank you, TCM. And DRUMEO.
I am metal drummer but blues drummers really great I learned a lot from blues

Nice to have great advice that’s not about chops.
thanks to TC I learned how to play a blues shuffle
Enjoyed watching
Great!!!
Great...👍🏻
Calep H. Emphrey Jr was BB Kings drummer for over 30 plus years. TC wasnt BB Kings drummer, he played some percussion for him. His actual drummer was Calep H. Emphrey Jr. When Calep called it quits. Thats when TC came to be Bb Kings drummer..much later. Until he passed in 2015.
Blues has such a great feel. Love it!
What is Blues?
Chrioni Sta Ana music genre

the coolest thing is that it's out of time
Wooooooooooooooooo
If BB king would've heard the ending of my Disney cover he'd probably choke me to death lol
I want his left hand.
1:08 turn captions on
there's no captions
Haha his story kind of reminds me of my dads friend whos hired and fired me around +7 times
Finally someone who makes sense and far better than today's crap music
not as easy as it looks!
Are Tony Coleman and Chris Coleman brothers?
Should've put Tony's name in the title tbh
I should change my last name to Coleman. Maybe then i will be good at drums
It looks easy, but I am sure it's definitely not 🙂👌
💓😂hello
额……被开除了5次???
The BLUES has to be played from your heart and blues soul…… OR DO NOT PLAY OR SING IT AT ALL.
3:01 he's holding his stick upside down
(:
Consider the source.,.
A lot of drummers play like that, just because of more "fat" sounding of the snare drum.
Why are you important?
(: = sarcastic face.
It’s called dynamics
Learn up kid
Put you to sleep type music he can't be serious
A valid opinion, but...
Every Led Zeppelin song is based on this music. That means every hard rock/metal band is the grandchild of this music.
The Beatles are based on this music. That means every modern pop and R&B record is the great-grandchild of this music.
Greater knowledge allows for greater appreciation. Thank you for listening to our TED Talk 🙏.
@James McClain If there is no Blues music, there is no Drumeo :)
Your comment is a nice example for stupidity! Without Blues there were no Jazz, no Pop, no Metal, no Rap... The Blues is the root of all kinds of today's pop music.
With a comment like that, you're clearly in the 'don't get it' bracket....
