  • In this episode of Mrs. Rattlecan's House we install the Husqvarna MK48A mulch kit on our YTH 2348 lawn tractor. Instead of the blades supplied with the kit, we will use GATOR mulching blades as we've heard from many other lawn tractor owners of their superior performance.
    As far as I know you are unable to order the mulch plate by itself (confirmed by two authorized dealers and Husky factory parts representative). If you know of a way to obtain the cover for the 48" deck please let us know in the comments below, it will save others on the cost of the conversion.

    I just wanted to quickly comment. I purchased a mulching kit, saw your video, and my installation was flawless. Thank you!

    Oddly satisfying. It's nice to watch work like this being done when you're not the one preforming, although we all will eventually.

    For those of you who can, there is a hole directly below the hole he attached the latch hook spacer to. That's where I put the spacer and now the cover fits very snug, much better then with the spacer on top.

    If you raise your guide rollers and then lower the deck the same amount your grass cut will be just as level but the deck will be closer to the ground and will reduce the amount of grass blowing around. Good video. Thanks.

    Ii use my leaf blower to blow grass and leaves from my mower, then spray it out with the hose. My mulching kit cover has two short bungee type cords that just snap on.

  • @Bdoodee
    @Bdoodee Před 5 lety +7

    PS- Blade orientation doesn’t really matter as there will be some inherent asymmetric belt slippage over time.

    I installed that mulching kit on my YVH 24/48 but it did not stay tight against the housing. The grass built up under the mulcher cover and it was squeezing out. I had to drill two holes about six inches apart through the outer curve of the bottom cover flange and the mower deck itself and secure that cover with bolts. It has worked great. Mulches so well that it is very hard to tell if the grass was mowed it looks so good. Those spring type hooks for That mulcher also had to be very tightly secured to deck. My blades have just the uplift section on the back side and not the Gator blades.

    I noticed that Amazon is selling mulching blade cover kits without the blades. Try searching there to see if you can find something that fits.

    The phase won't matter because your belt will eventually slip. Or if you hit a rock with one of the blades, it will go out of phase, no need to pay that much attention to it.

  • @JesseChoupique
    @JesseChoupique Před 4 lety +3

    Sorry to ask a dumb question, but you are worried about the orientation of the blades on the "stars". Does it matter? If it's being turned by a belt and not a gear, then the "timing" can continuously change. Those belts will always slip a little bit changing the relative timing between blades. yes? no?

    • @mrsrattlecanshouse5966
      @mrsrattlecanshouse5966  Před 4 lety

      There is a gap between the blades when they are "edge to edge" so it doesn't seem to matter. Good question.

    Do you recommend wearing suspenders or can this be done by just wearing a regular belt?

    • @mrsrattlecanshouse5966
      @mrsrattlecanshouse5966  Před 4 lety +6

      It probably depends on how much of the pant-supporting" anatomy is still intact. Mine has been chewed off at regular intervals over the years and a belt doesn't have much to hang on to anymore. YMMV

      With all due respect to the videos creator, no malice intended..
      I've tried the gator blades on several models, with and without mulching plates. I went back to OEM mulching blades and they outperform gator blades with or without the plate..
      But, if you are mowing infrequently in big, thick weeds and stalks, gators work about as well as standard bagger blades..
      They just chop and drop out the chute.

      Gator Blades are pre sharpened
      There is no reason to grind them at all
      The paint wears off very quickly after installation.
      You have a factory edge - why mess with it.

      Run brand new blades on your mower and watch
      It’s only a paint coating that is on them
      The blades spin so fast with so much force behind them the paint is removed easily.

      Why resharpen a factory sharpened blade.
