  • Let's compare a chute block, mulch kit, and side discharge for a zero turn mower. Each has it's pros and cons. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Then I do a little demonstration work to show how well the chute blocker works vs side discharging. I also give a little demonstration on a recommended mowing pattern to get the most out of your mower setup. Enjoy!

I have 1 mower with a mulch kit and 1 with a chute blocker. Both do a great job.

I wish you had done a demonstration of the opposite direction. It leave a cutting line which helps eliminates the lines of debris. Great advice as always...

I run a grassflap and an acb, really prefer the acb. It doesn’t let the grass build up and blow globs of grass into the yard when I get in tall grass between flower beds.
Side note, my dogs name is Duke. He looked at me like I was crazy when you yelled “ Duke, hush!”

What blades do you run with the chute blocker for mulching?

Do the holes in the blocker let debris or rocks come through?

I actually do the opposite... I mow outside to inside then back over the single line in the middle of the lawn to disburse. I don't have an actual chute block though I fabricated one from black edging material and bungee chord. My chute has a slight curve, not simple straight. Heat gun makes a nice fit.

What are your thoughts on using the double blade system? I’ve got a Shute blocker but no baffles.

      I've never tried it

I run the Ballard xblades. I'm not to impressed with the blades themselves. The adapters are ok. When mulching leaves they work pretty well. Let me say they are extremely heavy. We do not run them if we aren't needing to mulch something into a pulp. They don't stripe well and don't make any difference in regular grass and in my opinion do cause more wear and hurt gas consumption. But when you need to mulch high grass or leaves they are the ticket for sure

@@johnslawnseasttn4489 I've been waiting a LONG time for an honest opinion on the Ballard X blade system.
You confirmed my fear and I appreciate you sharing.

I just ordered a green guard electric chute block I'm going to try that on my lazer z paired with mulching blades. I know it won't be a true micro mulch liked you'd get with the baffles but if anyone has any ideas let me know

I just installed a mulch kit. I think a chute block would put all the stress on the one blade that's next to the chute block. The mulch kit works on all the leaves as if you vacuumed or bagged.

Is it not possible to have mulch kit then open a side shuttle as well?

    • @lawncarelife

I guess you could have one of the Interior baffles on the mulch kit but just use a chute block for the exterior baffle. Not sure how well that would work though

@@lawncarelife Thanks for response 👍 and I figure it could leak out and I imagine I would want a solid chute not vented for lift?I'm not commercial but like to help out some neighbors sometimes. I like mulching but occasionally I wish I could pull that chute and let some grass out you know.Even if I am only mowing on that one side for a minute.Sometimes I mow half deck anyways to make sure I hit all blades and more mow time.I have a Old toro timecutter that works great but considering going for a Bad Boy before inflation hits harder.
