Building a Large Garage 9: Metal Porch Roof, and the Hardest Cut of Steel

- Building a Large Garage 9 is all about installing the metal porch roof as well as showcasing how we install the hardest cut of steel on the building.
At the very beginning of the episode you see me using the fully auto Fasco Stapler. I am not sure if it is legal in California or not, but here in the midwest, I use it to burn up extra staples laying around.
The magnetic boots Greg is wearing are called cougar paws and work well on Metal Roof Installs. You just want to check them once in awhile to make sure you didn't pick up any staples!

For me, the ideas in czcams.com/users/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.
I'm a Builder myself. I watch your videos and learn English. In Russia, they don't build like this. Interesting technology.
Thank you for leaving in the installation of that vertical piece of steel. It is tempting to remove difficult or time consuming things from videos, but these things are where craftsmanship is shown. Typically, this level of difficulty in installation is bypassed by cutting the sheet. I am very glad to see you keep the vertical steel whole. I can remember installing vertical steel on an RV shelter, it took three of us to get it in position, then we had to remove it because it was scratched during installation. MAN! What a day that was. You can tell you are on a good job crew when the bitching is during the work to replace a mistake. Not as you work past the mistake. Keep up the good work gentleman, I appreciate your attention to detail and refusal to compromise your job to 'good enough' work.
I love your work ethic, attention to detail and the ever important jobsite humor that makes work fun.
Precision fine tuning with the cuts! Looks awesome!!
Excellent work guys. Others might have done a two-sheet install but you pull off the single sheet. Well done and looks great. Enjoyed the conversation.
First 30 seconds is how I see every noob with a nailer! That tool looks fun but a bit of overkill.
Love your channel, thank you for your willingness to share your knowledge with us. Your attention to detail is amazing and glad some in the trades still have the passion to deliver their best.
thank you
I love that AR stapler you use wow i see you can really go though lots of staples with that stay safe guys
Kyle amazing job on the large garage! Always top flight work! Looking forward to the next video!
As always, great work and entertaining.
The camera you're using is amazing.
You are definitely the coolest builder out there.... neat, clean and organized.
That was easy, the hardest piece of metal i've seen you guys do so far....excellent work.
That’s just showing off with that air stapler!😜
Always love putting up those pieces of steel.
Stay warm, stay well Stay Safe! Thanks for the videos!

congratulations on the great job! I'm from Brazil and I learn a lot from you 👍👍
You guys do AWESOME work
My mom made my pants too. Benefits were two fold, I was fat and fabric was cheap. Everyone wear sweatpants everywhere now. Drives me crazy at work guys show up in their sweats. Anyway, thumbs up for moms and your awesome work! Thanks for the vid.
I have worked construction my whole life and there's a right way to do things and there's a wrong way and you guys do it right 👍
Enjoyed the video. That was a tough cut and install piece. Looks great. The whole building is looking great. I'm a new subscriber and I'm building my dream wood shop and I just finished the roof by myself, which most of it is a 12/12 pitch.I ready for Windows, siding and trim and I'm hoping I can learn something from a professional. Thanks for taking the time to produce the videos. Y'all stay well and God bless.
Nicely done! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Well said. Thumbs up. And great backyard storage
Just love that Stapler.
Slippen, I can't believe you didn't make that all one piece at 5:50. Awesome build and love the color combo.
So Greg got the best impuls driver today. “Makita” 😎😇
Looking good guys. Good job.
Stay safe. 😷🧻
Love the videos, keep it up!
Nice cut!
My wife always says, "I'm not saying it's your fault, I'm just blaming you." Wink, wink.
Nice colour combo
AWESOME
Nice work
Be safe out there
The way you guys interact with each other brings back memories when I worked construction not far from you, just across the muddy river. My boss/ friend we had a great time working together not so much pole barns but Timberpeg houses. Best times in my life so keep up with the videos. Still learning from your videos, not working construction as a living but still in the trade. Oh awsome stapler haven't seen one of those. What brand is it? Did you do a review of it?
"Do you have worms?" 🤣
Bom trabalho amigo 👍👏
AR staple gun awesome.
Good job on getting around that kick flashing and everything else those suck!
Привет ребята! Рад вас видеть! Удачи и здоровья вам!
Фарту масти ауе
Kyle should play paintball with fingers moving that fast
good stuffs
I used a rivet bit to punch my steel. It's double sided and works well for me
At 3:25 --
Greg: I'm hungry.
Kyle: Do you have worms?
Greg: I mean, I was homeschooled.
This homeschool mom is laughing.
... when you are using metal sheets directly to the paper you should use the Tyvek Metal Vapour Permeable Roofing Felt .
10m08s: I never had so much dramatic tension build up and gripping my seat as I did watching this part.
Haha love the stapler
Nice work! What gauge of sheet metal do you use for roofing?
What wad the brand name of the cold weather suits and gloves you recomended on one video.
Thanks for sharing what you do. I like the post beam const.
From SE NC.
Nice wroof
Couldn't tell if you installed flashing on the porch roof with the tar paper where it meets the main wall or not?
Prince Harry is quite good at the sheeting, glad he’s found productive work since leaving the U.K. 🤣
He is not saying it WAS you, he is saying it WASN'T him! Funny!
Typical right
Is there some paint from the siding manufacturer that allows you to touch up if you do have any scratches? I must say the dark red with dark brown trim is my favorite look for these buildings.
Yes for sure but it never looks as good
Greetings Kyle, What brand name and model number are that auto fire stapler? There are times that I could use 2 of those. Thanks, Jerry
IL code you don't have to use ice / water at least on the first row? I haven't done steel in a while just curious.
GJ
Is the CRAIC always as good with you guys as we say in Northern Ireland this job is looking awesome
Wow
I like This Your Work. It's very real and joebly. Selamün aleyküm. God bless All.
I am always curious if you order an extra section of steel in case of damage or an estimating mistake?
No
Hey, thought you were in Illinois...you got a license for that fully automatic stapler? They are going to come and get you now...NOBODY needs a stapler that can hold that many staples and can go full auto....NOBODY...LOL
Haha
Ya...especially with that .50 cal magazine clip...LMAO
@@nvlvdave No kidding, I mean that alone would just be the worst...I bet it can be used in ANY stapler and allow it to go full auto...LOL
@@WreckDiver99 I heard it works in AR14s and AK46s too 8-0
Did you see Kyle pull the bolt back?
Is the OSB and felt enough to stop condensation?
sounds like a dillon mini gun that shoots 3000 rounds per minute. kick ass
That's one way to increase staple sales.
Every penetration is a fail point
I think him likes it too much. 😉
Well I NEVER...... saw (or even fathomed) a fully automatic stapler. 😍😍😍
Greg needs a mic.
Hey Kyle wondering if those bibs you are wearing are Truework ? Thanks bud
I would like to see a video how the concrete is done with your buildings. Do you have a video or would you consider doing one?
He did video that step a few times. forget which series it was but they were the final video.
We pile about 20 sheets of steel. mark the top one and predrill all the holes first. realy fast for screwing with straight lines. maybe try it.
I’ve drilled... it’s not as fast and not as clean but I know a lot of people do it and that’s fine. More than one way to skin a cat
As fun as those staplers are. You probably saw that most of those staples blow threw the felt. That and the more holes in the roof the more chances for leaks. But I still respect your craft and admire your attention to detail.
Not at all... rarely do they blow thru... usually the opposite and I have to hammer them flat. Also, if I have water leaking thru my felt I’m in trouble .
Maybe it was the brand of stapler I was using but we had lots of issues with them and the guys hated dragging hoses with them. Now if and when they come out with a cordless felt stapler That can shoot like that I will be very interested. Are you listening dewalt Milwaukee?
What kind of staple gun is that? My God! I need one
Did you have to add some sort of flashing where the roof of the porch meets the siding? Just starting learning about post framing and curious! great work btw
Danny Steck yes. Usually there's a piece of trim/flashing that runs under the siding and bends to rest on top of the metal porch roof
Nice video Kyle. Get Greg some dewormer. Dammit Greg.
Hi Kyle, have you calculated the useful life of one of the barns that you build? Thanks, great work by the way!
Not sure how I’d do that
@@RRBuildings an estimated of 25 - 30 years? Or more?
Given the way he works and if someone takes care and maintain if necessary they will live way longer than 25 years
The average lifespan of a post frame building similar to the ones that these guys build is one tornado.
How the hell do you guys get through the day without a radio
I am building an all steel building in central Arkansas. Do you recommend R10 or even better R rating roll out insulation sandwiched under the sheet metal? Or spray foam after the sheet metal? I appreciate you videos by the way. 👍
I never recommend sandwiching insualtion...wherever you do that it will most likely cause condesation
RR Buildings
Ty
Not sure if it would be easier to leave a gap on the rafter against the wall to run the steel behind it.
Kyle why you don't screw on the rib?
How do you determine the length's of your steel on roof and walls? And how far do you come down for the f and j trim 2×6 under sofit? And also excellent work guys.
I’m not R&R but usually you level back from the bottom of your facia board back to the wall and that determines where your f and j sits. Then measure down from that. Or if you build a lot sheds your can use the same measurements.
@@jaytodd1566 I know you can level back. But he measures it out and nails the gurts on b4 he raises the wall up. I was wondering what measurements he uses to determine that top board.
Get a zip lock container with lid for staples
Kyle, you just said Roof not ruff on many occasions what happened? Was it the trauma of remembering the MC hammer pants 🤣🤣 #youcanttouchthis
In the UK, we use mastic tape on our vertical laps when we lay the sheets. Is this something you guys do or is because we have different specs due to the atrocious weather we have? It hasn’t even come to mind to not use mastic tape until I watched this. Will
Anything under a 3/12 pitch
I had to look up what a 3/12 pitch was in degrees. The metric and imperial systems dividing nations yet again. When I move to the US I’ll have to relearn everything!
@@williamdickinson6385 yeah we use what you just found out instead of using the "degree" (14.04°) which we all use. funny how that equates to meters 0.9144/3.6576 (per Google's Unit Converter) or 1/4 in meters
Joshua79C C The sooner imperial dies out the better. I just tried measuring stuff in inches and it’s bloody awful. I’ve been a industrial roofer and cladder for nearly 10 years and have never not used mastic tape. Just feels wrong
👍👍👍!!!
Forgive my ignorance, but aren't you supposed to screw metal roof/siding round ridge part of the sheet? How does screwing into the flat area tie the sheets together?
Ridge = bent up metal from too much torque and wind damage, along with possible punching through due to stress from wind creating large enough holes.
Flat = metal does not flail as much or at all.
The overlaps still get screwed together but not secured to the structure at that point.
Not sure if you've answered this question before or not, but is diagonal bracing necessary with these structures?
Watch the framing parts again, they still use bracing "in" the wall.
At 12:24 your screw line was off on that weird piece y’all got in
When in doubt blame the boss
Why wouldn't you just put that J-channel in after the steel? Been doing it that way it those situations, and around windows all the time.
How much does a shop like this cost to build?
Randomn question speaking of pants haha what brand of pants do you guys wear in this video they look pretty sweet and I'm tired of just my plain ol' carhartts
Truewerk. Good stuff and if you buy use my code to save 15%. Code is rrkyle15
How do you guys not cut your hands when handling sheet metal without gloves?
I guess experience. I hate gloves
Looks like you have a Perma Column hat on. Have you used them?
My brackets are Perma column
All of his builds use the perma-brackets, be it wet set (most common) or dry/drill set
That's some stapler Kyle. Don't you have it battery operated?
I wish
@@RRBuildings Can moisture penetrate the barrier through the staple holes?
Ruff or roof?
What boots are you wearing at the start of the video?
Keen San Jose
RR Buildings 👍🏻
Looks that is faster than installing shingles and probably it last longer.
Definitely easier than and longer lasting, compared to asphalt shingles.
How many guys does it take to put up a piece of steel, 1 TEAM.
Yes
It's crazy that he's shooting the crap out do that tar paper. That paper is ment to stop any water that may make it through and cause water damage.
wait! are you blaming me lol
You are finally saying roof instead of ruff lol
Haha
I like your style......but you need just a few more staples!!!
