The drummers name is Dave Diddanato (not sure if I spelled last name correctly). He is a very cool guy. I had the opportunity to meet him about 15 years ago. Walked into his garage & he told us all kinds of stories about him, Cliff, & Jim dropping acid at this place called Maxwell Ranch. On the wall in his garage... The Gold "Kill'em All" record that Cliff gave him. Blew my freaking mind.

not surprised by all the people that think this sounds horrible. i think it sounds very ambitious, an interesting experimentation in sound scape, i like it. interesting disonances, unstructured meter, chromaticism, harsh sounds.
of course it's not structured on popular music, no catchy hooks or choruses here. maybe that is what is turning people off.
***** i think i could launch a strong argument that Cliff was actually the most musically talented member of Metallica, and that his strong song writing abilities are thoroughly displayed in Metallica's earlier material (even into ...And Justice For All).
as far as the stories i have heard and interviews i have read/seen, Cliff was heavily recruited for Metallica and the band even relocated to facilitate his introduction to the band. this seems far from your version of the story where it was needed for "Lars and James telling him to chill". as far as i can tell, it was more like Cliff teaching James and Lars how to write songs after Dave was removed from the band.
gumbilicious1 Cliff studied music. I think he was the most knowledge owning in the band. He composed many songs and he played bass in this way many bass players dont bother thinking about. You can listen to the bass tracks of Master of puppets LP and become amazed. The fact he was playing such experimental noisy stuff and composing "From whom... " way before Metallica shows he was further ahead from the rest of the band. I would bet Metallica would have never been that good without him.
I agree for the most part, Cliff was an important musical influence and he seemed to be using more complex musical concepts than the rest of the band. but he didn't 'study' music formally (at least beyond high school), he wasn't a trained classical musician.
he was influenced by many types of music, and he was a great musician but i am unsure if he even played in HS school band or had any music courses in community college. so it seems like all of his music 'study' was as informal as the rest of the band.
I agree with the initial comment very much so. it's my belief that people with advanced points of view as far as composition and musical possibilities create interesting pieces of art that aren't always pleasing to the ear, or pleasing to the masses. However they may showcase ability beyond the average musician. With that being said the songs approached by these individuals that due breakthrough to a large audience tend to be timeless, accredited, landmarks on their careers and cement their status as visionaries of art and more specifically in this case music.

This has probably been stated already but I think it's pretty cool that Cliff is wielding his Rickenbacker and Jim Martin is playing the same V he flew during all his years in FNM. These men knew what they liked by God!
The Void cliff did use an Aria Pro II and an Alembic bass as well. It's hard to beat a Rick though.

This just made my day! had no idea there was any early footage like this of Cliff from back in the day. I've been listening to Metallica since the 1st week of september 86(when I started 7th grade) & been a fan ever since. This has put a big ol' smile on my face today. Thanks for posting.

I love how naturally trippy the colors of the degraded tape are. Man Cliff really knew how to get ethereal sounds of the bass. Taken far too soon. He was like the Jimmy Page of bass guitar.

It's funny how Jim Martin got this reputation as a meathead buttrocker in Faith No More because he played heavy riffs, but he was one of the genuinely weirder people in that band. And of course they turned into a more straightforward alt-rock act after he left.
Wow early bass solo done in the psychedelic style of Hawkwind with a sparkle of Zeppelin - what a pure gem this is.
Cliff Burton was a prodigy, and a musical genius. Just listen to the intro to "Damage Inc." on the Master Of Puppets album and you'll hear what I mean. Still makes my heart skip a beat after all these years. Mind blowing.

they were all sorta connected. Kirk was good friends with Claypool. James and especially Cliff were friends with Jim Martin. pretty amazing - Metallica - Primus - Faith No More came out of that lot. all great but very different bands

Their audition was recorded on video and features some of the earliest footage of Burton's trademark playing style. The video also shows Burton playing parts of what would soon be two Metallica songs: his signature bass solo, "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth", and the chromatic intro to "For Whom the Bell Tolls".[2] that explaines this

Cliff and Les Claypool my bass legends, who inspired me to play bass
Two bass legends and both from the Bay Area! I should probably mention I'm also from the Bay Area. Grew up in El Sobrante(also where les and kirk hammet are from), El Cerrito and San Pablo. When I lived in El Cerrito for a couple years I lived half a mile or so down the road from the Metallica house aka the "Metallica Mansion." But I was just a little 3-4 year old boy then(born in 1980) who didn't know metal from a hole in the wall... 😕 Sadly I didn't discover Metallica until I was 12.

Cliff is about 17 to 19 years old in this video, its clear he had real talent as a songwriter and musician. I know Metallica has had some good bass players since Cliff died, but he really was the spark of the band. We miss him.

Metallica WITH Cliff and Mustaine, what would that have been like? 3 of the greatest at playing their instruments and Lars who is the quintessential rockstar, I don't get excited about his playing BUT I love it when he opens his mouth! I used to have a Metallica bootleg where this sounded like Cliff's "Anesthesia" solo (which wasn't like what was the album). The tone he got out of that setup was fucking amazing. He made that bass almost sound like a demented pipe organ it was so heavy.

In the enventuality he wouldn't die I would have seen him doing collaborations with people like mikael akerfeldt and some others less and non conventionnal musicians.
Ulrich and co. are so so pale in terms of creativity compared to Cliff Burton....

It's even possible Metallica could have become the vehicle for that experimentation. I know they were planning on firing Lars after the Puppets tour, but then Cliff died so they went in a totally different direction than they would have. I'm sure their next album would have been metal, but James Hetfield talked about Husker Du being something he was listening to in that video interview with him and Cliff (somewhere on youtube, possibly Cliff's last interview iirc); Zen Arcade had a lot of out-there stuff, and James was also into stuff like Laibach. They did ultimately veer off the metal path, anyway, so I think it would just have been sooner and in a different direction than the one they did take.
