    Cliff never cared about fame or fortune, never had a bank account, didn't care about money (this according to Connie, his sister) and was the most down to earth rock star on the planet. Those that knew him, called him friend, and spent time with him are truly the lucky ones!

      I’ve never heard a story where Cliff Burton sounded like a asshole. Dave Mustaine and James Hetfield? Yeah. Lars Ulrich? Hell yeah, but I’ve only heard stories about Cliff being nice to everyone.

    • @philippegindre5897
      @philippegindre5897 Před rokem +2

      I wouldn't say he didn't care about money. He was quite enthusiast when he heard he had already earned enough to buy a house ('I wanna house where I can shoot my gun that shoots knives!'). He had even asked his girlfriend Corrine Lynn to look for one. But, true, he hated posers. He told her to look for whatever house she liked, provided that it was something simple.

      @@skrrtdotcom9120 Well, yes, my point was that the assertion «never had a bank account, didn't care about money» is far from accurate when it comes to Cliff. So I suppose we agree. :) That being said, especially in that field, many artists simply spend their entire life in hotels or hire houses for a few months before going somewhere else. Being able to buy a house isn't something that appeal to them. Cliff wanted to buy one for him and Corrine, and another one for his parents.

    Cliff Burton was THE REASON I got into Metallica on 17 Aug 1985 at Monsters of Rock. Back in the day of when Donington really rocked! At first, I found Metallica too much. so I wasn't watching them. That was until my mate insisted I check out the dude on stage to see what he's doing. Reluctantly I did and have to admit to being totally blown away. I had never heard or seen a bass being played the way Cliff played. From that moment I was hooked. I saw him on the Master of Puppets tour at the Manchester Apollo on 17 September 1986 and still remember the day my mate phoned me to tell me he had been killed.

    i have a question about the morley pedals, did he swap to a wah boost therefore replacing the power fuzz wah?
    And if so that would be where the TS9 comes into play as the wah boost has no fuzz ? its only a wah so he would have needed a pedal to replace the missing fuzz?
    I own a power fuzz wah and sounds just like his tone, any additional distortion/fuzz makes the wah sound a bit murky which is what got me thinking .....

    Assembling a collection of effects to closely approach Cliff's tones, all I'm currently missing is the Ibanez HD1500...until I can afford to pull the trigger on one I'm eyeballing right now :) I'm torn between using the Ibanez TS9 or TS9B, as I have both, but so far have been using the TS9 for guitar only. Going with a Dunlop MXR Bass Compressor and relying on my amp's built-in limiter, and just recently acquired a vintage Morley Power Wah Boost :D

  • @matthewj3892
    @matthewj3892 Před 5 lety +1

    Love these videos, very well done, thank you. But one question I have is the timeline of the two wahs...
    When did Cliff use the Power Fuzz Wah and when did he switch it to a Power Wah Boost? (Like stated in the video)
    Which one was used for For Whom The Bell Tolls and for Anesthesia?
    The Power Wah Boost by itself doesn't get the tone (unless he possibly used the Big Muff and more with it), I've heard some say he used both wahs together at the same time to get that sound, but in the video above it's stated the Power Wah Fuzz was replaced with the Power Wah Boost. Also not clear how one could use two wahs together at the same time...
    So if someone knows the answer to this, and when he used which that would be greatly appreciated :)

    • @WhichBass
      @WhichBass  Před 5 lety +2

      From what I can tell. Cliff states in the Met Fan Club handwritten note from 1983 he uses a Power Fuzz Wah and pictures from this time support this. Later on in shows, the colour of the pedal has changed from a chrome chassis to a silvery grey pedal which is the Power Wah Boost (PWB). So it's quite a fast transition. There's no doubt he used the Big Muff with the PWB. I highly doubt he used both pedals at the same time. It was one or the other.

    • @johanneschristopherstahle3395
      @johanneschristopherstahle3395 Před 2 lety +1

      @@WhichBass From what I know he switched after switching to the MESA amps. Since they were tube amps he could get his overdrive by boosting them which he preferred over the Fuzz sounds. The PWB gives you an insane amount of boost.

    I modded a PRS Kestrel pretty much like his Rickenbacker. Ie, a Di Marzio Willpower on the neck and an Ultra Jazz on the bridge, strung with Rotosound Swings
    I can't stress how much of a difference do the strings make, that's the first thing I noticed when I brought my bass home after it was modded. It makes playing leads A HUGE LOT easier. Sure, Cliff was extremely talented, but I think most of his crazy bends were made possible by these light gauge strings

    • @WhichBass
      @WhichBass  Před 5 lety

      That's an interesting mod, sounds interesting, I'd love to hear it. The light strings are incredibly important for Cliffs style of play. The same is true for Les Claypool who's coming up next video.

    • @ViolentOtter
      @ViolentOtter Před 5 lety

      While I've had this bass for half a year, I have yet to upload some sound samples. It does sound somewhat close, but I'm yet miles away from nailing Cliff's tone. Not sure how he eq'd his amps, nor if he used his Morley PWB always engaged. I have a Morley Mark Tremonti Wah (supposed to be pretty similar), which is switchless, so I can't achieve the same effect unless I leave my feet slightly pushing it as long as I play lol. Tried rolling back the tone knob, and while it does help it isn't exactly the same
      You can check a couple of pictures here:
      www.talkbass.com/threads/prs-se-kestrel-modded-ala-cliff-burton.1343498/
      I also own a Electro-Harmonix regular guitar Big Muff, and a Joyo Vintage Overdrive. I run the Big Muff into the Tremonti Wah, and then into the overdrive (it helps giving the fuzz a little more definition). It's a highly sensitive setup, meaning that twisting a pedal's knob a little bit can make all of your notes sound indistinguishable, or make the whole distortion sound weak
      Pretty sure Cliff didn't get his distorted tones overnight. It demands a lot of patience and experimentation

    A small comment I'd like to make. As seen in one of the images, you can see a blue Boss pedal at (2:26) to the left. Presumably the CS2. However if you look closer, you can see a white switch. This is only found on the CS1 Compression Sustainer. And during the MoP tour. There is an image of him using the CS2. The CS1 was likely stolen, and the CS2 Replaced it. And he used the MXR Limiter in between. The limiter is just a guess but I'd say it's a pretty good one.

      Morley PWF
      CS1
