Shannon, Henrik Zetterberg is going to get into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The accolades are there: Olympic Gold, WC Gold, Stanley Cup ring, Conn Smythe during said Cup run. Almost guaranteed to get 1000 points. He is in the Hall in my eyes. A true leader on and off the ice.
To bad he never got his 1000 points. Sad that his back problems forced him to retire
Zetty deserves it. No question. The twins deserve to go in as well. Even though they didn’t win a cup, the dynamic they brought TOGETHER has really never been seen. What Zetty and Datsyuk brought together was also unparalleled. They should both go in together as well.
Zetterberg, Lidstrom and Datsyuk. Magical
I know I'm years late to this, but it needs to be mentioned:
In 2013, Wayne Gretzky said that Henrik Zetterberg is the greatest Swedish player of all time. Not Lidstrom. Not Forsberg. Not Salming. Zetterberg.
Absolutely
he was at least a top 10 player in the league from 2006 - 2013
i never saw a guy frustrate crosby so much, heck he almost made toews cry, he's a hall of famer
MikeG82 You’re right, he seemed like a extremely frustrating player to play against. A lot of players say Zetterberg, Kopitar and Getzlaf are just difficult to play against.
ths is the mosst accurate comment on the internet
yes
Yes he is a great spokesman for the game
Definitely. In the year they won the Cup against the Penguins I gained a huge amount of respect for him. Everyone talked about Crosby vs Ovi for who's best,in that year (for me,at least) they should have been comparing Malkin and Zetterberg.
malkin is going to be a top 50 all time player when he's through. zetterberg...not so much.
if malkin didn't play in pittsburgh, that comparison would be crosby vs ovi vs malkin. zetterberg is a tier or two down. there have been years where geno truly was the best player in the game.
doaftheloaf overall, yes. But there were a few years that he was impressive enough to be in consideration. And I definitely agree that Malkin is equal to or better than anyone you care to name.
Times Malkin has been tasked with shutting down an opponent's top player/line = ZERO. Zetterberg has been pretty much tasked to do just that for the past 10 years...
Let's ask Crosby why his point totals was so miserable during the 2009 finals series against Detroit. I bet he won't shake your hand after you ask him... #whineybrat
@@chrisvanderwielen1530 penguins hater detected. Bashing Malkin AND Crosby in the same comment? Yeah no bias with you is there?
@@chrisvanderwielen1530 #backtobackchamps #umadbro
This shouldn't be a question. He's still an amazing player.
As a lightning fan i hate the wings but even I agree he should get in
TampaBay Lightning2017 why do you hate the wings? I'm just curious haha. You guys blew by us 2 years in a row in the playoffs.
And arguably the greatest Red Wing ever to lace up the skates is their GM and on top of that he makes good moves. If anything, he should love us.
TampaBay Lightning2017 u should love the wings if they weren't so ego driven ken would had moved up and they would have made Stevie r guy not urs and we wouldn't have traded u guys a first round pic that turned into a stud for u guys
My answer is 100%
THG's genius level IQ confirmed
Huge Zetterberg fan, so I am not sure if I am just bias but I for sure think he should get in.
Yes and Pavel
Hey The Hockey Guy, I would love for you to make an in depth video as to what teams should someone support (if they're new to hockey) and why as well as their possible future. As a person who is not from USA/Canada I have struggled to find a team I really want to follow and stay loyal to and hopefully watch them gain success, however I don't know enough about hockey teams to decide which teams I would enjoy the most to watch and support etc etc. Thankyou!
Yes.
Love your videos! Agreed. As a lifelong Wings fan from Detroit, Datsyuk is my favorite player, all time. It'd be nicety seethe go in together. "The Euro-Twins"
YES. He's a role model for younger players in Detroit and he will hit 1000 points next season.
He's super nice off- and in ice. Quiet gentleman
New to the channel and a big Red Wings fan so thanks for this. Obviously biased but I hope he makes it. What he's been able to do in his 30's after back surgery has been really fun to watch. He's the definition of a great captain to me, especially after a hard loss, he's always accountable to the media.
Also, he didn't have a Staney Cup contender team behind him in the last decade. He's a player that could make players around him better. He is a great person on and off the ice.
Yes he should
Zetterberg was Sweden's team captain with a spine Injury in the Olympics. He scored a goal the night the docs evaluated him and saw he needed immediate spinal surgery lol. During the finals he literally owned Sidney Crosby both times they met, held him virtually pointless. I really don't understand how people continue to underrated datsyuk and Zetterberg. Those two made the best duo in hockey for years.
this
Another couple of guys who should be in HOF: Vincent Damphousse and Guy Carbonneau!
Zetterberg was Sweden's best player when they won the 2006s Olympics. He should have gotten more Selke recognition. He was always a bit better than Datsyuk in the playoffs when the Wings made two straight finals. He has a Smythe. Beast player.
No doubt about it. See you in the hall Zetterberg.
Zett is definitely a HOFer and so should JR!
I hope he gets the 60 points he needs to make 1000. I think him and Datsyuk both get in
Henrik- Yes
Pavel - Yes
Fantastic analysis.
Which other active players do you think make it into the HHoF?
This is probably my personal bias, but Henrik Zetterberg absolutely deserves to be in the Hockey Hall Of Fame. He’s the reason I wore #40 for my first two years of playing hockey as a kid. Although he was mostly overshadowed by Pavel Datsyuk (who also deserves to be in the hall of fame as well), his skill, determination, and leadership were never questioned. I’d even go as far as to say he’s the most under-appreciated player of this generation.
I think he should. He's had a great career
Thank you!
Forsberg is a hall of famer and he doesn't have the numbers at all compared to most of the rest. I'm not saying he shouldn't be there, because he should, but it's not only about numbers. It's about how committed you are to the game as well. And Zetterberg, both on and off the ice, has certainly been a really good champion for the sport. A lot of the star Swedish players you see today wouldn't be there without Zetterberg being a role model.
Yes. End of discussion
Of course.
No doubt
I’m a wings fan. I think he’s borderline. He gets overshadowed by a lot of the other great red wings
Yes Shannon the man.
is a great player.
Hate watching him make
My Hawks life miserable.
but i give him his due.
if they waive the waiting period to be allowed to be inducted for a player like Chris Pronger then how can Zetterberg or Datsyuk not get in?
I actually got to go to the centennial classic
Yes, if after Datsyuk.
Datsyuk will be in the HHF; he was also better player than Henrik Zetterberg.
YES
The wings didn’t lack for talent, they lacked physicality for multiple years, which ultimately sent them home early on a few occasions. Zetterberg always had a challenger on his own team mind you for the selke award for best defensive forwards. Datsyuk won a number of those, and was runner up in others. Bottom line, he was lethal on that line with Datsyuk, and they dominated once they corrected the physical defensive side of their team game.
I agree with u
Can you do a similar video on Theo Fleury? That would spark some interesting debate
Go Wings
Not even trying to be bias as a lifelong Wings fan. This man is the perfect example of an all around HOF NHLer. On and off the ice. Plus he’s a stanley cup champion.
Yes
its kind of ludicrous that he was never won a selke, or wasn't even nominated for at least a few more
I guess playing with Datsyuk for most of his career made him overshadoweded in that department.... but all red wings fans know Z was always the shut down center, not Datsyuk. Just as you said in the video.
Anyway, pretty much a PPG player (up until these last couple of seasons) and an extremely well defensive guy during a dead puck era. I think he makes it.
Pavel was on another level. Sorry, I respect Z but no one was a great two way player as Pavel was. The way he read the plays of the opponents was insane.
Can you do Eric Staal, don’t know him that well so I’d like to hear u talking about him
Yes obvi
OFC he should be a hall of famer!
You should do a video on 'Is Zdeno Chara a HHOF?'
Yes!!!
Hehe, I had a discussion about this with my brother recently. We both agree that while Zetterberg is borderline, he *should* get into the HHoF. My brother also said that Lou Whitaker should probably be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, especially since Alan Trammell is and Sweet Lou had as good or better stats compared to Tram. But like you said, Sweet Lou and Tram were a great pair just like the Eurotwins were. BTW, I think Chris Osgood is also deserving of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Not only are his regular season stats stellar, he also had great playoff stats, particularly in his final years as a Wing, and he was a huge reason why the Wings won in 2008.
Modern hockey = everyone's great, so everyone looks average
a 60pt player is now a star. 100pt players are outliers and sometimes never happen.
50 goal scorers are dead and 40s a rare occurance.
I think another good conversation is does Chris Osgood belong in the HoF? (Yes)
He so does, it's pretty unfair
Henrik Zetterberg is my second favorite player of all-time, next to Steve Yzerman... if you just factor in his NHL career, i would say he would just outside the HHF. However, if you want to include his international accomplishments then i would include him.
I think they absolutely should, but Pavel Datsyuk has been my favourite for ten years so I'm biased.
Video idea: should Malkin be in the hof
It would be nice if Z and Datsyuk went into the HOF in the same year.
Do one on Brad Richards and St. Louis please
st louis yes, richards no.
Oh I forgot that he was part of the 28 players in the Triple Gold Club.
He should be, but not if Dean Prentice does not go in first. Prentice matches Zetterberg stats exactly in points, in a great era, the Original Six which was a low scoring era, he did play alongside Andy Bathgate, but that is really a void argument because he played on the Expansion Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars, scoring 20 goals on several occasions and one 30 goal season. 391 goals, 469 assists, are good totals and he was an excellent Penalty killer, there was no Selke trophy to win in his day but I'm sure he'd have won one. they didn't take plus minus for most of his career, and he played most of his career on the Average Rangers of the 50's. Dean belongs in the Hall of Fame equally as much as Zetterberg, Zetterberg is deserving, but, Prentice belongs just as much.
100%
3 Henrik's from Sweden will have their jerseys retired and get selected into the hall of fame in a maximum of 5 years from now. Pretty cool actually.
(Henrik Sedin, Zetterberg, Lundqvist)
"Lacking leadership when he and Datsyuk took over." (COUGH) Lidstrom, Draper, Chelios.
zetterberg took over the captaincy when lidstrom retired
Triple gold club and 1000 points, it’s a crime if he doesn’t
Zetterberg should be in the hockey HOF.
I have a question for you
Do you think if Yzerman was the the GM of the Red Wings they would be as great and Dominant as they were in the 90's early 2000's.
I mean look what he helped Tampa Bay Lightning do.
Mike Perillo no. its almost impossible for the wings to be as dominant as they were given the current salary cap structure. Now would they be in the current situation they're in if Yzerman never left? Maybe not. Still they could not be as consistent as they were prior to the salary cap regardless of who is GM.
....yes
You could argue either way. I'll err on the side of caution, follow my gut feeling and say no. My criteria for a HOFer are threefold: 1) team accomplishments, 2) individual accomplishments and 3) special stand-out achievements outside the first two criteria. I want to see something solid in at least two of these three and for the first two, I'm gonna ask you to show some hardware.
Zetterberg has a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold from a tournament with the best players so he checks the team accomplishments part, no problem. The World Championship medals are no doubt nice and shiny and a fine memory for a player, except let's be honest: they're second to third grade accomplishments for the HHOF. We might as well start arguing that winning the Gagarin Cup or some of the European leagues should help your case for the Hall even when we know they never will. The Olympics also lost their importance again now that the NHL doesn't want to let the best of the best compete. So I'm sorry, but those are secondary achievements for Zetterberg's case. Not that it matters because like I said, he has a cup ring and an Olympic gold from an elite tournament so he's covered there.
He has a Conn Smythe and a 2nd All-Star team appearance in his individual achievements but little else of real weight. I count rookie achievements as second tier and often coming with an asterisk ("a superior player... for a rookie"). If you are genuinely elite in your debut season, then it's a whole other debate. Nominations I also find to be a secondary argument in a HHOF debate. Either you win and come out on top - or you don't. It's the Hall of Fame, not Hall of Second and Third Best. If you are overshadowed by generational talents for significant portions of your career, then it might be a conversation. But I don't think Zetterberg was continuously overmatched by such unique and once-in-a-million years players that he couldn't have grabbed another individual trophy, had he well and truly achieved HOF levels in his play. His Conn Smythe win is a big deal but outside it he doesn't bring the personal hardware.
As for the third category of "special stand-out achievements", I reserve that for the intangibles or other displays of greatness that can't be measured by looking at a trophy cabinet, points or other metrics. And I mean you gotta be a leader like Messier, have the puck-handling skills of Datsyuk, the physical dominance of Lindros, or something along those lines, to be in this category for me. Was the player iconic because of what he brought to the game, did he bring about a change or evolution in hockey, etc.? Zetterberg did not.
Yes, I'm being harsh. Very harsh, probably. But for me the Hall of Fame should be a very exclusive honor, not a feelgood thing for players who were well-loved and who put up the numbers. Retiring jerseys and such stuff is for that. The Hall should be for the game-changers, the generational talents, the time-and-again winners and the well and truly special players. The induction is too loose as it is. Zetterberg peaks well, bringing two major team achievements and one major personal achievement to the table, but besides that I see mostly secondary arguments like nominations and a great point total. He's worthy of the HOF discussion, not even that far from being an entry... but I still wouldn't put him in.
Now that I've made my case against his HOF induction, I will say that he does deserve huge respect from the league, the Red Wings and just about everyone. He's had a great career and there's no team in the NHL he wouldn't strengthen. Retire his number, honor him whatever way you see best... as long as it's not the HHOF.
yes he does i wouldn’t be suprised if he and pavel datsuk go in the same class
My brain says no, but my heart says yes.
100% yes
Hank!
How is this a question, he’s hands down a HOF
Next time the Canucks host the NHL draft, would you be willing to go there and live stream it, just for the heck of it?
Mr. Bond Edits No idea
In some respects, Captain Z is a lot like Nicolas Linstrome; in my mind any way. We have a lot of young guys coming up the ranks and Captain Z is an outstanding mentor. He has played in pain since his back surgery and I've read so many reports that the Captain may go on LTIR this season. That's a heart breaker for a lot of us. I hope and pray he gets into the HHOF for the man he is both on and off the ice. He makes other players play better through his work ethic and inner compass.
Im still amazed JR ain't in the man was a beast i loved when he played on the " special K " line how can a guy put up numbers and agitate like he did when the league still had real enforcers and not get in
What stupid question ????? Zetterberg is a big Captain / Champion.
My favorite player going to the hall of fame
How long do you think it will take for alfredsson to make it into HHOF
Yes ‘ends video’
New Video Suggestion : Should Ryan Getzlaf Get into the hall of fame?
if zetty doesn't make it, getzlaf shouldn't either.
if perry gets in i'm going to puke.
I really dont get why people say they dont like the red wings... why? The only reason i can think of is maybe how kronwall can get a little messy with those hits but compared to marchand thats nothin. Plus there isnt really a disrespected player that plays for us except bertuzzi but who needs him anyway. Idk maybe im just a lil triggered from a comment i saw 😏
Absolutly 100 %
Agreed Hall of famer and Agree that Datsyuk as amazing as he is and was would not have been the same player with out Henrik.
Idk about that, alot of Pavel was just single handedly running though guys. Not saying Z wasn't amazing. But Pavel was on another level.
Triple gold club. Enough said. What do you think about Patrick Elias?
I'd put Zetterberg more on the level just right below the HHoF, along with guys like Getzlaf, Elias and Lecavalier.
I'm your 500th like on this vid I think he and datsyuk should both get in then again datsyuk may or may not come back but still
Do you think hossa or possibly chara could get in there as well?
Hossa no doubt!!! He put up alot more points!!! He was a sick player!!! He is in the HHOF
and now Z is done... real question does LTIR affect a players chances on going into the hall?
Only 2 All-Star games is hard to believe. He deserved more. Maybe he was injured for some but still good grief
Short answer yes. Long answer yeeeeeees
An interesting video idea may be the best players who never won a Stanley Cup.
Obviously, he should be in it. I mean, just look at how handsome he is; if that's not a get for the HOF, I don't know what is.
did i miss something did zett announce retirement ...
Josh Palmer nope him and Kronwall signed for at least another year
Nathan McAllister Zetterberg is signed until like 2022 I think. It's ridiculous. I don't think he'll play that long, but probably another year or so
Simon I guess in a way that’s what I meant to say but just with the wrong vocabulary...
