    Really good breakdown and comparison. I have the Sigma, and seeing the Sirui comparison is extremely useful. The Sirui definitely has that extra something in the way it renders; I love the Sigma, although sometimes it's a little clinical. The Sirui has character, but isn't overly soft like some other anamorphic options or vintage lenses. I could easily use the 35 and 50 for a lot of productions, narrative or even documentary.

    Hi I just bought a Sirui anamorphic 35mm f1.8 and my camera is Panasonic GH5 and also I have Viltrox speed booster EF-M2II ( used typically for Sigma 18-35mm ). So Sirui offers an ef-mount adapter for their 35mm anamorphic. Will this work to combine 35mm anamorphic mft converted and mounted on ef speed booster and then mounted on GH5?
    And if yes how good or bad will be the results?

  • @MWB_FoolsParadisePictures

    From what I understand, you're more or less right on both accounts of history: In order to compete with TV, film studios were indeed using anamorphic to get wide ratios like 2.35:1. But also, one of the popular wide ratios--which is now one of the 2 main ratios used in Hollywood cinema--was 1.85:1, which is achieved by shooting spherical with a camera that projects the image sideways onto Super 35mm (film frame + sound strip). Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

    • @vangmx
      @vangmx Před 3 lety

      Actually what you're talking about is VistaVision where the 1.85:1 image is filmed sideways at 8 perf. This was used on several films which achieved less film grain and a sharper image however at higher cost. Instead, most 1.85:1 spherical films are filmed horizontally just like 2.35:1 at 4-perf. Most of the time, 1.85:1 are filmed full frame at 1.33:1 and matted later.

      Hahaha, but it would be nice if you at least post a side by side comparison photos somewhere... Idk, I really like the lens but I think It's not totally worth it because I can just crop top and bottom on 26mm on my sigma and have a better (much better) minimum focusing distance. However, Sirui would have less DOP, so IDK, it would be a nice comparison, haven't seen it anywjere in CZcams or forums. And you could do it as well with the 50mm vs 35 cropped and the upcomong 24 vs 18mm cropped. The Sirui lenses match almost perfectly (cuz 50= 37 actually) horizontal view of the sigma 18-35 and would be AMAZING to compare the 3 lenses with their equivalent focal lenth on the sigma.... I don't know... Think about it.. I would wathc that video over and over again lol

    So I did some calculations based on your image, and it seems that the Sirui 35mm can cover up to 1.35x on a full frame sony camera. On a camera like the A7S III, which doesn't have enough pixels to crop in without sending you to 1080p resolution, it's best to shoot with the vignette, and then reframe as required in post. For that to work without issues, if you're moving the camera, it's best to turn off IBIS.

    • @ChristopherBurress
      @ChristopherBurress  Před 3 lety

    Alas, believe it or not, it seems that the image circle size of the 35mm Sirui lens has drastically REDUCED. The negative impact? A user can no longer use 1.2x Sony Clear Image Zoom to get the wider angle of view on A7 full frame camera. I just bought one copy from B&H hoping to 'copy' what you have done: using it on my Sony A7r. What I found was that I had to use 1.8x Clear Image Zoom to get rid of the dark corners, so that is the SAME (or worse than) as putting it in the APSC mode+extra 1.2x digital zoom. If one were to put on the Sirui using the full frame mode, they could see an almost perfect circle on the view screen, which, to me, is very much close to a joke! The only positive side I could think of is that it still functions as a true anamorphic lens but with no extra benefits of using it on an FF camera. So in conclusion, the 35mm Sirui lens given out to CZcams testers to evaluate 2 years ago are no longer available from retailers, and what are now available could be some very different lenses (i.e. strictly m4/3 image circle ), and I believe many potential buyers might not know this.

    I'd buy that lens in an instant if not for that blue light streaking. That blue tint is just so fucking artificial.

  • @TanteCantikMancingLiarBali

    I thought this lense suitable for my fhising video....extra wide 21 : 9 like in real movie,,,

  • @smashexentertainment676

    Sigma 18-35 is not a video lens tho. Both don't stand a chance against CN-E 35mm T1.5 and that's one of the cheapest options if you're on a market for a real cine lenses. For youtube is OK tho.

    Man, just when you seemed to get it right on the Historical front, you blow it by comparing Spherical and Cylindrical optics designed for entirely different purposes.
    There IS NO Comparison!
