- Look up every cinema rig from Blackmagic or Canon and they have this lens attached. It's in every video shooter's arsenal. An unheard of super fast zoom covering a decent range of 18-35mm f1.8 on aps-c. Testing it out on the full frame Canon R8. Pros and cons to Sigma lenses in general. Sharpness at the cost of 3d pop and micro contrast? What I look for in a lens.

How's the blackmagic 4k hauhauhauhau
in tough times, youre bringing some smiles to the world. i think the bible says '' blessed are those who make us laugh so much we pee a little''
It's all sigmas fault they should donate you a nicer house so you can get a better shot.
OG has better look, definetely
I like binge watching this channel instead of going to therapy
Sigma is all I got. Heavier than it needs to be, but sharp enough. Working-class lenses.
Yep. There's a reason the 24-70 Art mid-range zoom sells used for nearly the MSRP.
I have a boatload of Sigma Art lenses (I have a set both for Canon and for Nikon), and I adore them. sure, the 135mm weighs the same as some long telephoto lenses, but I love the look it produces anyway. If I'm shooting a prime off of a tripod, it's probably a Sigma. To compound my sins, I like the Tamron SP primes for hand held work because they are stabilized. I don't own a single Zeiss or Voitlander lens. I do also have a collection of very old glass (mostly old M42 screw mount lenses and Nikon ai and ais lenses) but generally speaking, I prefer autofocus lenses with all other things being equal.
Great lenses, just wish more of them had weather sealing
@@danncorbit3623 Sigma 135 so heavy but result very clean, like just out of camera w/o any PS, also 3d pop confirmed. Maybe almost as Zeiss 135.
@@northofbrandon Their only lenses with weather sealing are the sport lenses (sort of, the 150-600 contemporary is also weather sealed). I wish they would make a series with good glass AND weather sealing. Maybe SpoArt because that is the one Achilles heel of the Sigma art lenses. So you had better not hose them off like Pierre T. Lambert. ;-)
“All I want is the perfect studio…” 🎶
That BMPCC4K with the Sigma 18-35 looked astounding.
OG with 1080p (2k)
It's a beautiful match, even on the 4k.
I own the sigma 105mm 1.4, it has single-handedly made me start using a monopod, a stabilizing video backpack, a left side wooden handle, and a back problem. Totally worth it though.
Had that lens. I regret selling it so much. Though its a MONSTER!!!!
What kind of stability backpack do you have?
3D Pop is real, but I was surprised to see in the test shots of the Sigma vs your Zeiss 55mm, that actually the Sigma looked just as 3D! It's nowhere near the Voigtlander 20mm but it's not bad. Proud to say I've owned the 18-35mm for 8 years now and will never sell it, I just keep adapting it to new camera bodies.
I think the 3D pop is really just contrast. The Sigma has a lot more contrast vs the other lenses and in general is sharper and has more detail. This can be tweaked in post or with a filter. Sigmas are fairly clinical.
The Zeiss 55mm is actually a Sony lens; made by Sony with a rented Zeiss badge. The Voigtlander is actually a Cosina lens, made by Cosina with a rented Voigtlander badge. They're not bad lenses but it is wrong to take the licensed logo literally. They are not actual Zeiss or Voigtlander lenses, so if you think they are magical because of the logo, you are wrong.
@@darrenorange2982 its a hotly debated topic but i think there has to be more to it than contrast - i just bought some old Yashica lenses and the contrast is low but the 3D pop is unreal.
@@audioupgrades very true! Do you know where to find out which lenses are rebadged or is it just word of mouth?
@@PixPete Voigtlander went bankrupt decades ago so no genuine Voigtlander lenses are made any more. Zeiss has outsourced their production of camera lenses to Asia but they are tiered according to manufacturing standards (price indicates). Most Zeiss-branded lenses sold for Sony were actually Sony lenses, with some exceptions, such as Batis, Loxia, Touit etc. The information is out there.
I hope you don't get tired of doing CZcams., You brighten my day.
Loved the illustration at 7:52. You are not alone. Yes 3D pop exists.
I'm staring at the Sigma booth at Imaging USA conference right when the video dropped - good timing! ❤
great stuff as usual. Love your videos!!
Dude I love your videos - this was one of your best. Love your humor most of all and how you don’t take yourself so seriously. I still tell some of my clients to watch your early video when you walked in the mall to get more comfortable vlogging - that was a great example of “exposure therapy”. Keep at it -grow some hair
i like how he makes fun of Tony Northrup.
Own the 18-35 F1.8 for one reason only. It is superb and the best in its class. Love it.
This episode lighting is so good.
I'm actually so in love with this Lens, I still use it on my Sony A7siii with an adapter, even though it's vignetting at the wide focal lengths.
Been using the 18-35 on my Fujis for the last 6 years. It never fails me and I hope they come up with a V2 someday.
Very entertaining video as usual. The 3d Pop (is that an invented term?) comparison was great, and showed a visible difference between the lenses. But I have to also say that the Sigma on the BMPCC4K had great skin tones.
It's the OG btw, even better.
Bro you’re such a cool dude. Thank you for the video and explanation
I bought that 18-35 f/1.8 Art . When it came out I fell in love with its versatility. It has character of vintage and modern combined .
My words on the reviews of that lens, “the Sigma 18-35 will be a legendary lens “
Sigma lenses usually are flat flat flat .
The Sig on the BM looked fantastic. Great skin tones and a nice filmic look. I had that lens for years when I was rocking Canon C300 II and it was a workhorse which delivered some fantastic images. So it should work super well on the BM
I stuck my Sig on my BM once and it smelled terrible
My 20-year-old Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 is 7.5 lbs. My 20+-year-old Nikon 180 2.8 is a beast too. My Leica lens collection is so light it could blow away on a windy day.
Like the 18-35 on my R7. In regards of colour science and R8. Faithful, manual white balance. That works for me but what the hell do I know, just a fellow hobo CZcamsr with few time and works what he gets directly out of camera 😂
Great vid as usual, happy Sunday 👍🏻
I own it. Love this lens. Great all around lenses
I've got the three APSC Sigma's, 16, 30, and 56, along with two FE's, 35 and 85. All of those are f/1.4. I've also got Sony's "cheap" 50 f/1.8, a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, a vintage Tamron 80-210 from the mid 80's, and a Sirui APSC 50mm 1.33x. These are basically all of the lenses I've ever used... and I understand your slant on 3D pop and the "feeling" of lenses. Perhaps my feelings would change if I had ever experienced Zeiss, but I've never been let down by the Sigma's. I don't have the luxury of testing/playing with a lot of different varieties, so maybe that's a blessing.
I actually have two of these 18-35 lenses I love them so much.
3:53 Hey Kasey. I saw the 3DP immediately in both photos.
I can't wait for your Tamron 17-28mm review... lol 😅
I’m more of a telephoto guy but I kept the Sigma 18-35 as my fast wide with my Sony ZV-E1. I can use it in full frame mode with full continuous AF and with Dynamic Active stabe the lens covers the whole focal range. It’s a good companion to another special lens - the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. Both are heavy but the hart wants what it wants 😂
I just bought the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM lens second hand. finally i look green and my photos of brick walls are amazingly sharp!
I bought that Nikon 40mm thru your links and I love it on my Z7ii.
The only lens I own from Sigma is the 56mm 1.4 paired with the GH5 for my CZcams content :)
Yes, I love my Leica 9mm. Combined with the digital zoom and ex tele converter on G9, I don't even use my zoom anymore (for video). Also the jokes in this one, laughed real hard!
BMPCC + Sigma looks glorious
I've been kinda waiting for this video lol!! All my vlogs (except maybe 3 or 4) are all with the 18-35 but, because I'm on Canon M6 2 I have a viltrox speed booster so I get FF every time and no crop shooting in 4K.... I actually get 1.2 vs. 1.8😳😳 definitely heavy af but I desperately love this lens 😂😂 Good shit as usual 💯🫡
I would say the Panasonic 25mm 1.4 is one of the best. I have kept a micro 4/3 camera just for this one lens.
I bought that 40mm Nikon and loved its dimensional rendering but my copy was unusable . I returned it . Yours looks very sharp
I found a vintage sigma 70-135 macro at a thrift shop. Its so lovely
Honestly I am starting to regret sending my 18-35mm Nikon to the used camera shop. It's still there by the way. Wonder if I should buy it back considering it's been sitting there for the last half year.
Kudos for the rear-view-mirror solution to the no flippy screen problem, sir!!! 😂
Another amazing vintage camera which has yet to be equaled on the photography side but not for video of course is the Leica M8 which is a dream camera because you'll shell out $2,000 for something which might fry out in a second and be a brick but my God the black and white on that thing it's just glorious probably the best ever made sometimes I think it even beats tri-x film
where can i purchase the inferno sun lut?
I've sold all my lenses for the sigma 18-35 and the 50-100. Couldn't be happier. Wanted to go after the EF L primes but the cost was too ridiculous from what i could get out of just 2 lenses.
I too sold 300 vintage size and cocina lenses for my sigma dream team and I haven't been happier haven't looked back once haven't ever cried no really I don't cry that often well okay really I cry everyday but still sigma is amazing
"That didn't make any *cut*" hahah. zeiss level comedy
Sigma lenses differ a lot. Their nicest lenses are the old DSLR lenses that are marked "EX DG" with tons of 3D pop and character. As you're using DSLR versions of Canon lenses, it wouldn't be difficult to find some old Sigmas too. The Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM is a legendary secret sauce lens (I have several copies in case I lose some). The Art lenses are good for shooting clean images. The Contemporary lenses have a bit more character. In short, Sigma has almost every type of lens that you could want.
I hace all Sigma Art primes and are the best lenses ive ever use, you should try with some filtration.
Oh grasshopper when u can snatch the pebble
The 18-35 on a Metabones XL for M43 gives you a constant f/1.1 with an APS-H crop (close to FF). Granted that f/1.1 is purely for exposure and doesn't really effect DoF but for me that's a good thing, the ultra stabilization on a G9 with a workable focus plane for video is such a great tool to have when shooting travel videos especially at night.
Does this lens auto focus on M43?
@@SKIDSnSTUFF not really. I have tried it recently with metabones x0.64 and Lumix G9II and af was practically useless.
@@SKIDSnSTUFF I wouldn't rely on it, especially CAF, it's definitely going to be a manual tool.
I couldn't see the forest for the trees 😝 Cold as Ice ... nice Foreigner reference👍 I have the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art and it's a great lens on the Canon 5D Mark IV even works great on the R6 with an adapter👍👍
I used to own the 18 to 35 art it had a lot of Nikon d7200 and absolutely love it, never really used it for video though mainly just photography but it was phenomenal for everything, I also had the 50 to 80 art or whatever it was something like that, never really noticed a problem with depth but I got super good super sharp images, next time I view photos I'm going to try and pay attention to the 3D depth thingy and see if I know it's much of a difference lol
I sold my 18-35 and 50-100 about 4 years ago, when I made the switch to the sony a7iii, and I still miss them every day. Sometimes I wish i switched to the xt-3 instead.....
I love the sigma 40mm f1.4, it’s a beast - Otus quality but with af is crazy
I have an 18-35 for Nikon f-mount so when I adapt it to the m4/3 mount of my BMPCC4k, I can have a manual aperture ring (due to Nikon’s mechanical linkage) and enough flange distance to put anything I want between the lens and the camera (speedbooster, filters, etc.) :)
It’s a super versatile lens-biggest downside is definitely the weight, with my setup requiring a lens support
Will say it’s built like a tank though.
What would you recommend as a good video lens for fuji, most for travel videos? I literally watched all videos on yt on this aspect, but I get the filling that most CZcams rs are just trying to sell me ad products
Let’s get a video ranking the top 5 3D pop lenses
Wil this work on FulFrame and motor noise and AF ?
All I want is a perfect set design.
You make me sleepy when you talk!! Hahaha 😂but great info bro
If you're interested in a fun ... relatively cheap lens rabbit hole...Minolta Rokkors. Probably not really wide enough for vlogging...may not have the extreme Toney (except the legendary 58 1.2....oooohhhh that's nice Toney) ....but...those colors. Vintage 70's baby.
I love my Rokkor-X lenses so much. Have the 135 f2.8, 50mm f1.7, 58mm f1.4, and a 50mm f3.5 macro. The COLORS are so good and they've almost always attached to my Lumix S5.
Time for a home makeover video? Gotta love when one system decides to make it so you have to turn the lens the opposite direction from every other known system when mounting the lens to the body. Have a rockin' day!
I love all my Sigma glass.
If you were interested in photography and not video I would say you had to check out that Fuji S5 Pro which is still a top camera 20 years later
But that's just a rebadged Nikon D200 afaik.
I use it all the time in full frame mode with my fx3. I hope the can male a full frame version with the f1.8 aperture.
There is a full frame sigma 20-35 f2 if that’s any help
@@LiveMyJourneyTom I did not know about that one. Ill test it.
Its likely been said below already, but Canon did you a favor by going in to crop mode. The 18-35mm is a crop sensor lens.
I reckon the BMPCC OG won this episode.
Ha I was thinking the same thing
Honestly I record most of my CZcams Talking Heads with the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 and it is not heavy at all; also usable for vlogging… it is no art lense though, but sharp for video on my A7IV (don‘t throw anything I know only 60fps in crop, but hey 120p in FHD 🤣). 3D Pop? Don‘t know, apparently not, but also personal preference, right!? Also did a review about this lense on my channel and Autofocus is, as you said very fast on it. Price, 899,- better than Sony’s 2000,- … Anyway, great entertaining video as always.
I have this lens constantly on my Red
Keep up the good work brother
Q: What's that 'mirror attachment thingy' you're using as a 'flipscreen hack'? [edit: at 1:23]
If you think it's odd that each lens is weird because it has color variance, like some are warm and some are cool, wait 'til you find some of the lenses that are warm in sunlight and cool in shadow without changing color balance. My vintage 28mm Soligor is frustrating to shoot video with for that reason
Vintage lenses tend to do that because everyone shot on the same films back then. Therefore, lens coatings were used to give different brands different character. Warm highlights and cool shadows is a way to increase the general contrast. Most films would also have warm highlights and cool shadows.
Back in the day, this lens made the 7D Mark II viable for things besides birding. Loved that lens: it now lives on my R7 for occasional video stuff (yes, I’m one of those useless, filthy photographers you occasionally help out ;)
Sigma 18-35 is great only with panasonic m43 with speedbooster. Try it with g9ii
He does not have it, if he did that would be all he would use
@jeirg-lr8vf - I've used the 18-35 (EF mount) with my GH5 for years and love it, but what really surprised me is that I'm still loving it with my S5IIX and MC21 adapter.
The S5IIX does use an APSC mode upon detecting the lens, but it's still 4K and I like the look. It's the lens that just keeps on giving.
“Some lenses are … soft … and it’s not like I like that.” Oh facepalm haha. That’s all you prefer lol. Every side by side comparison you seem to like the soft/blurry one. The Canon R8 vs EOS R video for example, at 8:45 discussing vintage vs. modern lenses. Love the channel.
Sigma has various colors. My 56mm f1.4 Sony E mount one is really really warm. I get an orange skin tone no matter what white balance I use.
MIne doesn't do that.
What gamma?
I'll take the Zeiss.
Got this lens for my Sigma SD H, and never fall for it, the range is just too small to call it a zoom, replaced it with Sigma 28 1.4 and got much better rendering in the same size package
Maybe if you catually used the lens on a sensor it was made for like BMPCC 6K or Canon c70 or R7 or Sony 6700 you could get enough detail and subject separation?
What is this 3D pop you talk about and does my orange Fanta qualify?
I wish sigma makes one for the aps-c e-mount
I really think you are experiencing a placebo effect . I really want to send you 2 identical photos one with sigma and one with ziess and im confident that you can tell them apart. this 3d pop is just baised towards something you want to believe. Should i send you similar clips with pop lens and not pop lens and you have a look ?
Go ahead. Make sure they have exif data.
@@cameraconspiracies You blew your chance for looking like a true prophet, because he would probably forgot all about the exif and you could have even told him if he used a flash or not. We're talking Jonny Carson Karnak hat stuff here.
@cameraconspiracies it is exactly what I am saying , you want to see the exif data to see zeiss and then the placebo effect starts , if you don't know which one is which , you see no 3d pop . it is just biased towards a thing you want to think it is best , it is called "Confirmation bias" read about it , the point is a blind test and you will point to the sigma and say this one has the pop . I am not defending Sigma ,my dad does not own this company so I don't to vouch for them , but you talked so many times about " a pop " which I did not really see and the sigma looked better to me. The most important to me in a lens is the lack of chromatic aberration. If there is any I puke and delete the video all together and sell the lens immediately. And all this vintage low element count .has chromatic aberration which looks bad .even a smartphone doesn't have this problem anymore
I'm just trying to prevent you from sending me two bullshit files that aren't even a real zeiss vs sigma comparison. @@A.Edilbi
I get significant pop from my Sigma lenses, you just have to get your distances right. I also have a Zeiss Batis 25, it pops with more ease.
can the lens create flicker light?
How? Where?
Can I suggest you do a photo session of several photos to compare and see if 3D pop is real, A and B, then let us vote which one is which, then unveil the results in the next episode? You might be biased towards the Zeiss
I have it.
Canon should make new EF cameras. Either a camera fits inside a side pocket or it has to have an optical viewfinder.
8:40 "I'm easily debunked"...story of my life.
You forgot the most important thing, Sigma's backwards manual focus ring. Not sure how you miss that major flaw.
well i'm with you but switching mentally takes like 1 second plus some people are just fine with sigma lenses only. the weight is worse imho
I have the Sigma 40 mm that’s so so flat rendering.
I’ve started buying up certain Voigtlander lenses . Then got the Leica 90mm f/2.0 Summicron pre asph . Nice glass
Personally, I don't see the 3d pop you are talking about. I bet if you take the Pepsi challenge with those lenses, you won't see it either, at least not every time. On my OG and P4K, I have the MB .71 Speedbooster, and you can control the Tones on both cameras. The 18-35 goes down to F1.3 with the Speedbooster. That Sigma 16mm looks fantastic on the 6400, or any other camera, plus it's cheap. I rate the 18-35 #1, and the 16mm #2 as far as the best lenses from Sigma, at least the ones I have tried.
3400 views and 120 comments in four hours. He clearly knows what he is doing. He has interesting content and he's funny as a dad joke marathon. I think I would watch his videos if he talked about nothing but the hair on his knuckles.
@@danncorbit3623 I have been watching his channel an commenting on his videos since he was in the Philippines. I can't remember if he got his X3000 before me, or if I got it first, But that is the way I found his channel, by doing a search for the X3000. Back then, nobody even knew what it was.
For a fairly logical explanation of what "3-D Pop" is, see the article: "MICRO-CONTRAST, THE BIGGEST OPTICAL LUXURY OF THE WORLD". I do have one minor disagreement with the article, however. The author claims that 3-D pop is independent of resolution. That is incorrect. Imagine a single eight by ten inch pixel that has a billion color variations or shades of grey. When we look at it, we will see only one color, since it is only one pixel. In order for enormous dynamic range to be effective, high resolution is necessary, and the higher the better. On DXOMARK, the color depth is called "Portrait". What is being measured is how many different values can be stored in a single pixel (on a logarithmic scale).
If you want 3D pop from Sigma - go for the Series I lenses - e.g. the 65mm f/2.
Why not make the sensor in a round shape to fit the lens? This way you can choose aspect ratio later :)
Nikon already has patents on that
The OG makes every lens look good too bad it's a pain in the butt to use that thing
It doesn't. The OG footage is always the worst. My heart sinks every time I see it.
The Sigma 18-35 shot was my preference in every shot you posted on screen. Change your living room angle field of view and stop hating on the OG Sigma 18-35. 😂
Sigma is sharp works well on the sony apsc and an excellent value. The zeiss, leica nosebleed lenses are not for poor scrubs like me.
I wonder if the 3D pop you are looking for in a Sigma lens would be found in their Contemporary line? Such as the 35 or 50 DG DN f2 lenses. Now that you are opened to Sigma, I hope if you get the change to test one or all of these lenses, go for it. They seem pretty good and fairly small. Its just the ART lenses that are monster MOFO's.
Please try to do a 3d pop blind test. About colour reproduction, every lens will be slightly different based on the coatings but as long as you white balance before the shot, it won't even matter. Also you seem to have absorbed all these buzzwords like 3d pop, micro contrast etc, from the theoria apophasis guy, who is a complete phoney. He uses complicated words to seem smart but once you parse through his word salad you'll start understanding that none of what he says actually makes sense. And this is across pretty much all the topics he covers. Please take a deeper look into his content
He's something of a crank (I only watched his Angry Photographer series, his metaphysical stuff is not my cup of tea), and swears like a sailor, but his lens recommendations are usually good. His advice for lens cleaning is completely correct. He does not like Sigma either, but he loves Tamron (shrug). I have almost all of the lenses he raves about, and I like them too. There is room in the world for different opinions. Consider Jared Polin (I shoot raw) and Ken Rockwell (I shoot Jpeg). Personally, I shoot raw too, but look at Ken's images. They're great. There are contrasty lenses and lenses that wash out at the slightest hint of backlighting. For some people, contrast is very important. It's a viewpoint, and viewpoints are never wrong.
"I like X!"
"No that's wrong!"
It's only wrong if he's lying because it's a viewpoint.
@@danncorbit3623 I'm not saying that he doesn't know anything about lenses or photography, but he regularly adds nonsensical fluff words like the ones mentioned. If you cannot quantify a a particular character of a lens like in this case, 3D pop, then I don't think it exists. I'm sure the Zeiss, Leica and Voigtlander lenses are great and all, but there is no "Magic" about them.
@@Wildridefilms this isn't logical, but I truly believe that if you love your lens and camera, you will take better pictures with it. I agree that he likes hard to quantify expressions (and he is also repetitive). But if I an curious about an old (F mount or earlier) Nikon lens I will see what he has to say about it along with Ken Rockwell and Jared Polin. Contrast is not as important to me as some other people, besides which, I use a lens hood and am not afraid to use the contrast slider when I need it.
@@danncorbit3623 I completely agree with your point.
@@Wildridefilms About the "magic" features... I could not agree more. If you can't measure it, it does not exist. Statements like "This lens has more totally immeasurable polymorphic fluxions that give the viewer that certain je ne sais quoi" or similar gobbledygook are pointless, meaningless, useless and add nothing to the discussion. Contrast (for black and white) and color depth are easily quantifiable and impart more data density to the image for obvious reasons.
The Sigma 18-35mm is a good compromise lens. Being 1.8f is pretty good for just about anything.. then match it with 18-35mm is pretty much acceptable for anything.
It has a crazy big brother. The 50-100mm 1.8f. That one is a portrait zoom maniac. But not as good as beautiful as the full frame 1.4f 85mm
Oh man, I love how you blame Sigma for your life issues. :)))
I'll try it myself to see if it works. Keep up the good work.
Concerning Sigma's lighter weight: The Lab at Sigma Corporation of America (in conjunction with Japan Labs) has discovered unique Covalent properties in Helium. Each new lense now is lighter because it includes special patented GAS mixtures - (Helium, Argon, Hydrogen and Oxygen essentially)
3x He + 3x HAr + 3x HO.
Have you played with Sigma’s 50-100 f1.8?
Ive been using the 25batis and 55 for the longest time and love them.
Tbh, super curious for the sigma I contemporary primes... but im a loser photographer
You bought a batis I am so sorry
I want to see 18 35 1.8 full size ~or 1850 F2
