Welcome to Modern Homestead Alaska. We are located in South Central Alaska near the town of Wasilla. Living in Alaska and building our dream of “modern Homesteading” through the wilds of winter and the long summer days. We started building our Modern Homestead in 2021. We have since completed the upper levels of our home. Built a 16x16 foot chicken coop that dreams are made of. Our chicken ladies live in luxury as they view the beautiful lake from large windows inside the beautiful coop. We raise our own poultry, hunt for our food. We are avid fisherman And woman. We also built an amazing and beautiful wood shed. We have great big garden planes for the future. Join us as we dream big dreams and live everyday working hard to accomplish them.

What a lovely video - just what I needed today. It's a year since my mum passed and the past few weeks I've really been missing her, dad passed 15 years ago just want a cuppa and a chat with them. Wouldn't want mum here though as she passed from Ovarian cancer and don't want her in pain. Your video brought me peace and a smile, thank you for all you do.

The view over the lake is so pretty. It’s an enjoyable introduction and let’s us see views that we don’t have here in Ohio. As beautiful as it all is I couldn’t live in the cold and deep snow…🥶
We had a pellet stove for many years. My husband replace parts twice himself…..when we first used it a 40lb bag was $2.99 ….now it’s $5 and $6. It took 1 1/2 bags per day so it’s now sitting up in the barn…if and when we fix the building in the woods into a little primitive cabin we’ll use it up there again just to warm it when in use.
I miss making 3 meals a day…my husband only eats dinner…..I like having sweet breads in the freezer for mornings with coffee.
Every Christmas my mother in law would make each family nut roll as a gift on Christmas Eve to have the next morning with coffee as gifts are opened.
I have gotten little sleep….my heart is heavy because my nephew was killed in a accident . A truck pulling a trailer cut across the freeway because he was having engine trouble he clipped its back end spun around into a tractor trailer….😢Four young children…he was only 39 yrs old…..we never know when our time will be. We take tomorrow for granted….
Have you been canning or freeze drying? Lowes is now selling Harvest Right but it looks like at a higher price then the company…..I’m canning up my older beans since a few times now they’ve been hard to get soft…..so you have to watch how long you keep them.
I think they sold old stock during the pandemic…..I watched Three Rivers Homestead can beans her way so I’m trying it ….
I made lentil veggie soup yesterday……trying to get hubby into other sources of protein…..but he still ate three sausage sandwiches and just a little soup…..🙄
My son in law will gladly eat it since he’s the cook most of the time. They eat mostly vegetarian so cooking for their meals has broadened my tastes…..

Thank you for all that. I’m so very sorry for the family loss. What a heartbreaking thing to walk through. I truly can’t imagine. I have been freeze drying soups as of late. I too like to can beans.

Very much what most of our days look like. I am just getting better at not putting pressure to make it big. Or only recorded the big. Most days are just us laughing and talking and scooting around doing what needs to be done

Our rather large dog was always supposed to be an "outside" dog. Somehow she has managed to wrangle her way into the house. Just like your dogs she is constantly in our way at our feet.

I put a huge bag on the tree stand at the bottom. When Im taking it down, I slide the bag up as high as it goes, and it catches most of the mess when needles are coming down by the buckets full!

Yes that bucket I’ll save! The others that are just dust ash it’s it much.
Take pineapple peels in container, add sugar (brown is best), cover with water and set on counter. Cover top with cloth to let natural yeast ferment. Strain, good to drink when small bubbles form, refrigerate. Will turn into pineapple vinegar with time
We call it “tepache” or pineapple kombucha (also good as mixed drink vase. Lol)

Red with white dots is my favorite material. My Mom had to make me a dress (I kept outgrowning them so she would make me another) that was Red with white polka dots till I was old enough (18) to make my own. Loved 🥰 it when you had on red with with polka dots. Hugs y’all!😊

The fan on the stovetop circulates the warm air, but does it ever cool off your cooking, being so close to the pots and pans?

I could watch you cook all day. You are so creative! Thank you for sharing your life in Alaska with us. Filming, editing, it has to take some time! One suggestion, when you give the sunrise and sunset times, could you include the expected highs and low temps? I find myself googling the temperature in willow ak so I can get an idea how cold it is.
Oh that’s great! I very seldom think of that. But when we were moving here I googled it everyday but never thought put that in my video! Great suggestion

I really enjoyed the video. I love to see Aaron singing and joking around. I really enjoy seeing things you have to do to maintain the homestead inside and out, including taking care of the chickens and plowing the snow. Also grocery store trips. So interesting since we don’t have snow here.

I know not everyone. But the trees here are so tall over the house and still less branches. Not great to decorate. But the state is so big they have better “Christmas” style trees in inter parts of the state
I was surprised that Alaskans actually shop for a Christmas tree even though you’re surrounded by trees on your own land. Watching Aaron clean out the wood stove and carry in an armful of wood several times a day, made we stop and think how much work is involved in using a wood stove for heating & cooking. @@susanhickman1746 yeah our trees are so spindly and super tall. I had no clue before moving here that we would ever buy a tree. I’m as shocked. Oh the wood stove is very much work. It’s worth it but so much work
you have really nice property. it likes pretty new to like house and other buildings and barn. and wood stove in kitchen like pretty top end wood stove. very nice family

Great I truthfully wanted todo a chores video but didn’t want todo it to many times. Try and show it’s such a huge part of the homestead but not everything we do.
My husband also has a hard time with hats because of a larger head. He jokes it’s melon sized and not all hats come in melon size. 😂😂😂

Yeah we just don’t ever talk about it until one of them makes it down the path of a ring. Only because if they break up I have to delete videos. To make the next one happy. So I say until there is a commitment ring no mention of them. Hard in this case as she is also our daughter’s best friend and traveling partner.

Sorry yeah I made it up on the fly. So I just added scallions and everything bagel seasoning. And put it with eggs. And baked it off. That’s truly all.
My parents had a log cabin in the north (not as far north as you but still) When we did go for the week end, we had to open the doors windows to let the humidity out and afterwards we started the wood stove and the fireplace. We opened the beds so the covers would feel the warm air. It was totally off grid when we got it and they the electrical power arrived for that area. How cold are u up there. The coldest I remember it being while I had was there was =42 degrees. You had to come in and let everything thaw before u rubbed your hair or it would break off
Currently it’s been so mild very above average temps. It even rained a week ago. But we will or normally I should say dip down into extreme temps of -20 and below. Just has not hit yet

Ummm the house with the Cookstove is our full time home. And the cabin is our son’s full time home, he rents it from the family. It’s a little confusing. To keep some financial things private and also give a good idea of what we do.

Sort of. You get tiered early that’s for sure but in just a few days the days get longer. So it’s wild we are already almost on the other side of it. Truly it goes fast

Ohhhh that’s so hard. I would take liberty they say not to and eat it. But only do what you feel is safe based on the whole situation.
