Turbulent Tanking

- This is a video of a Navy F/A-18 Hornet tanking from Air Force KC-10's and KC-135's (the KC-135 is particularly challenging-- pilots call it the "Iron Maiden"). In turbulent weather, especially at night, tanking can be even tougher than landing on the ship. The basket is heavy, and it can damage the plane if it strikes it, to include shattering the canopy. One can only imagine the amusement of the tanker crews (to whom we're very grateful) as they watch us flail around on a bumpy day.

Both of my parents were Air Force officers and navigators on KC-135s. My mom said to post the following:
(1) The drogue (basket) is not "flyable". The boom operator only controls deployment and fuel flow and it's up to the Navy pilot to line things up. On a plane with a rigid boom, the boom operator can "fly" it. Only the Navy uses the drogue.
(2) This footage is from two different airframes. The close footage is from a KC-135, and the footage from an on-looking plane is of a KC-10.
Soundtrack is awesome! (:
@VFA103JollyRogers Back when everybody started using mid-air refueling, they weren't sure which style would stick, so the USAF ended up settling on Boom refueling (cause they could transfer more fuel into big bombers like the B-36 and B-52) and the Navy on Probe and Drogue refueling (because it's simpler to set up). Most of the NATO allies actually use Probe and Drogue for their Air Forces, but the USAF is standardized on Boom since we've used it since the 50's and all of our planes use it.
I understand that pilot so well.
Navy aviator hate the KC-135 due to the infamous center basket attached to the boom. Unlike other baskets this one is made out of metal and is super heavy being given the nickname of "Iron Maiden". Since the hose is so short the basket will move alot more than wingtip ones so you got this big heavy metal basket being tossed around like its nothing and if it hits the plane then the aircraft will get damaged really easily which sucks for the F-18s since all the radar, avionics, and gun is located in the nose. There's also been cases of the basket hitting the canopies so hard they shatter in flight so the pilots gotta be real careful.
I can just hear the pilot saying "Oh come on, man, are you fucking kidding me!?!" :)
Yes, and with some aircraft that carry alot of ordnance, they have to take off with less than a full bag of gas and top off in the air. It's also the only way to drag fighters across large bodies of water without landing.
hey at least u finally got some fuel!
that was quite amusing though
this would be an awesome video game!
Nice.:D I'm pretty sure this is good flying.X3 Haven't seen too much flying to compare anything to it.XD
It's not too often, but occasionally the situation presents itself where fighters need to relocate without the help of a ship. In that case, a tanker would be required. Like Air Force guys re-locating overseas or Navy guys going somewhere without a carrier.
they usually have a fin on the end to stablize the air flow coming off the refuel nozel . Guess this is what's happens when you dont have on of those on . lol
First inflight refuelling involved a bag of sand on a string! Until one day the bag got stuck in the aileron gap. Next attempt used a water filled balloon as ballast.... Alan Cobham and Helmore. Back in the thirties... no, I wasn't born then!
the Tanker in the first vid was a KC-135
Thanks, you're proberbly right, his comment just rubbed me the wrong way. So I did didnt make much of a brain job of commenting.
looks like a mating ritual. like discovery or something
It must of been really bumpy because I never had problems holding the boom still even in turbulence.
That would make me pissed.
It took some doing, you did get satisfaction. I know I sure couldn't handle that. I don't see how you can maintain true flight after hook up, have there ever been hose disconnections or tear offs during fuel up? The comic genius, aka the kook.
why does the navy use a different refuel system than the air force?
God Bless the Great, United State's of America.
going to the moon was usefull?
hahahaa the music hahahaaha
@YawnGod Sometimes you have something you want to blow up that's just too far away from an area of water you want to take your aircraft carrier into, so you need refueling tankers to help them along. The Air Force tankers have much longer range cause they can carry much more fuel, so many of them are designed to refuel the Navy jets to help them out.
@pilot7893 - That's cause it's FSX... try Lock On: Modern Air Combat!
af-ect

Mathematics obviously isn't for everyone.
Not easy to refuel one of those dirty bastards in the air ;)
well get them right.
@theaggravator LOL
man that must be annoying lol
maybe itd be easyer if there was some hair around it
Does in air refueling increase the aircraft's combat radius?
No, it just resets it.
@@johanmetreus1268 12 years later, and a great answer.
@@YawnGod I started answering things recently, but I'm already done with the older questions. In 5-6 years, I might be down to an even decade behind ;)
uhh im getting frustrated just watching this video
Great stuff, geez it's dangerous with that fuel spraying out when it didn't seat correctly and then after the tanks full and it releases. The burn of the engine could ignite it, I think they should look at the design.
CZcams was created by two American engineers, educated in American universities and now it's owned by Google, an American company. People talk shit about America because it's the best country in the world.
The World Wide Web (Internet) was invented by the CERN in Geneva (Switcherland - Europe) in the 1980s.
Why would they drag *Navy* fighters across large bodies of water without landing? I mean, even a McDonald's' burger flipper knows that sea transport is more cost effective than air. You see the problem here, yes?
.. only to take a peak at you national debt.
Aw, thats your theory out of the window.
Kinda like,...trying to put it in the hole when yer' drunk!!!!
HAHAHAHAAHA LOL
Oke, you're from the USA. It's normally a stereo type that says his country has the best looking women. But on top of that, you say you have better health care etc. Let me just point out that Europe generally has cleaner water supply then the states, socialised health care (you proberbly don't know that system) and half your nations top models are foreign.
America had the largest affect in the western campaign, russia had the largest affect in the east, its only facts.
Man, the excuses you guys come up with.
Oh well.
for an Asian....you're pretty incompetent. The website is American because it's American based. Even if the creators are of different ETHNICITY, they are AMERICANS by nationality. (unless of course they are dual citizens)
PS. CZcams is an American website. It has been localized for other countries so that users can operate, navigate, and communicate in their own language.
That's all I gota say
As interesting as this is, with the music to make it sound all nice and dandy, one should not be distracted from what this video really shows in action; the U.S. military industrial complex. Do you people not realise how pointless air to air refueling is? What a waste of money it is? It's an F-18? Land that shit on a carrier and refuel. But at least that Rolling Stones music makes you oblivious to reality.
