Turbulent Tanking

  • This is a video of a Navy F/A-18 Hornet tanking from Air Force KC-10's and KC-135's (the KC-135 is particularly challenging-- pilots call it the "Iron Maiden"). In turbulent weather, especially at night, tanking can be even tougher than landing on the ship. The basket is heavy, and it can damage the plane if it strikes it, to include shattering the canopy. One can only imagine the amusement of the tanker crews (to whom we're very grateful) as they watch us flail around on a bumpy day.

Both of my parents were Air Force officers and navigators on KC-135s. My mom said to post the following:
    (1) The drogue (basket) is not "flyable". The boom operator only controls deployment and fuel flow and it's up to the Navy pilot to line things up. On a plane with a rigid boom, the boom operator can "fly" it. Only the Navy uses the drogue.
    (2) This footage is from two different airframes. The close footage is from a KC-135, and the footage from an on-looking plane is of a KC-10.

@VFA103JollyRogers Back when everybody started using mid-air refueling, they weren't sure which style would stick, so the USAF ended up settling on Boom refueling (cause they could transfer more fuel into big bombers like the B-36 and B-52) and the Navy on Probe and Drogue refueling (because it's simpler to set up). Most of the NATO allies actually use Probe and Drogue for their Air Forces, but the USAF is standardized on Boom since we've used it since the 50's and all of our planes use it.

Navy aviator hate the KC-135 due to the infamous center basket attached to the boom. Unlike other baskets this one is made out of metal and is super heavy being given the nickname of "Iron Maiden". Since the hose is so short the basket will move alot more than wingtip ones so you got this big heavy metal basket being tossed around like its nothing and if it hits the plane then the aircraft will get damaged really easily which sucks for the F-18s since all the radar, avionics, and gun is located in the nose. There's also been cases of the basket hitting the canopies so hard they shatter in flight so the pilots gotta be real careful.

Yes, and with some aircraft that carry alot of ordnance, they have to take off with less than a full bag of gas and top off in the air. It's also the only way to drag fighters across large bodies of water without landing.

It's not too often, but occasionally the situation presents itself where fighters need to relocate without the help of a ship. In that case, a tanker would be required. Like Air Force guys re-locating overseas or Navy guys going somewhere without a carrier.

they usually have a fin on the end to stablize the air flow coming off the refuel nozel . Guess this is what's happens when you dont have on of those on . lol

First inflight refuelling involved a bag of sand on a string! Until one day the bag got stuck in the aileron gap. Next attempt used a water filled balloon as ballast.... Alan Cobham and Helmore. Back in the thirties... no, I wasn't born then!

It took some doing, you did get satisfaction. I know I sure couldn't handle that. I don't see how you can maintain true flight after hook up, have there ever been hose disconnections or tear offs during fuel up? The comic genius, aka the kook.

@YawnGod Sometimes you have something you want to blow up that's just too far away from an area of water you want to take your aircraft carrier into, so you need refueling tankers to help them along. The Air Force tankers have much longer range cause they can carry much more fuel, so many of them are designed to refuel the Navy jets to help them out.

Great stuff, geez it's dangerous with that fuel spraying out when it didn't seat correctly and then after the tanks full and it releases. The burn of the engine could ignite it, I think they should look at the design.

As interesting as this is, with the music to make it sound all nice and dandy, one should not be distracted from what this video really shows in action; the U.S. military industrial complex. Do you people not realise how pointless air to air refueling is? What a waste of money it is? It's an F-18? Land that shit on a carrier and refuel. But at least that Rolling Stones music makes you oblivious to reality.
