Cockpit video from a VFA-192 "Golden Dragon" F/A-18C performing a demonstration flight off the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63). LCDR Todd "Toad" Nelson at the controls.
Saw an article in the local newspaper about a young man who graduated from my high school in 2004 who now flies these F/A-18s, Feeling so happy for him.
I'm an artist and I've drawn & painted all types of aircraft from P-51s to B-52s but have never drawn an FA-18. I shall draw or paint on before I die. It's a very remarkable aircraft.
This is a very nice video. I think U2 is a great choice. Shows the Hornets grace and power. U2 has longevity....like this Hornet. VMFA-112 Go Cowboys !!
I was a brown-shirt, night crew, USS Ranger in Vietnam. That's a lotta cold water out there. And thats about the way it is. The music is fine. THAT is a beautiful day! Try doing all that in the rain at night.
Glad you liked it. The first time I cut this video I only used the cockpit footage (both looking forward and aft), but I agree it looks better with the external angles as well.
I got no connection to the dragons other than interest. The US navy vids are by far the best on the net, always enjoy them. I'm from Australia, all our fighters are US Navy jets so the videos suit us well. Great work dude.
@alexxxandre91 they are deploying squadrons for F-35. It is the joint strike fighter, and are receiving their own model which has a beefed up chassis for carrier landing. It will still only have a single engine, but the reliability tests have been so high the need for a second one it a non issue.
@skippyskater you also have co-ordination, speed reading tests (for dials and controls and so on) , spatial awarness, and they ask you every time you seem them have you/are youpassing physics most important subject (for recruitment anyway)
to fly these you have to join the Navy or the Marine corps. the F/A-18 A, B, & C replaced the F-4 phantom & the A-7 corsair 2. the Phantom was used on the smaller carriers the U.S. Navy used to have that were too small to handle the Tomcat. the A-7 was an attack jet. the Tomcat was replaced by the F/A-18 E/F super hornet which is a different aircraft from the F/A-18 C Hornet.
@alekzander2010 I'm biased, but the Naval Aviators use these more than the Air Force. The piloting sector of the Air Force is more focused on ground support, whereas these jets are mainly used for air to air combat.
@SpartanB146 I wasn't talking about who was flying in this video, but how2 just said join the Navy if you want to fly. The Air force offers the same thing...not just the navy. That's what I was pointing out.
no you need to be able to see colors, such as when you land on carriers for example you have to "call the ball" and you have to see the lights correctly on the carrier. Thats just pretty much it. There are many colors you need to able to see cause sometimes they indicate threats as well on your radar and if you cant see colors your in a world of trouble. Basically just used to identify certain things but yes most is done by your radars and computers, but you have to manage it and interpret it
The outside shots were taken with a standard mini DV camcorder. The shots through the Heads Up Display (HUD) were taken using the Hornet's on board camera. The other shots were taken with a helmet camera rig feeding into a mini DV camcorder. I used Pinnacle Studio version 9.0 to do the capture, edit, and production. Do you have a connection to the Dragons?
Good choice! I am a huge Maiden fan! Did you fly the Tomcat??? What an amazing jet! I dig fighter pilots and have researched the Aces since I was 12 years old!!!
@stiksoldier Thanks for your interest :), I've been going crazy on the maths and have been looking for leadership opportunities throughout my school, In primary school I was a well respected prefect and backup house leader (athletics carnivals and such).but I wouldn't think they would take into consideration primary school achievements would they? All I can do is try to do the same in senior school and keep my grades up, and of course what you mentioned, thanks for the kind words :)
Im currently taking the required subjects at school to maybe one day earn my seat in one of those babies, off course I wouldn't be taking part in carrier operations considering Australia don't have carriers! (hmph!) But i hope to one day fly an F/A-18 out from Avalon, VIC. Its my lifelong dream :)
Man, I just keep watching this vid over and over again. I luv the music. The HUD shots are too low fidelity (grainy), I dunno why the navy doesn't go hi rez on these things. I know it sounds cliche, but I'm so damn envious of these young gun pilots. You should publish more vids like this one.
Hey 51Sarge51. You could go to the Naval Academy and get a degree in both Aeronautical Engineering and/or Astronaumical Engineering and a medical degree. But you'd have to serve 8 years in the Navy if you go there. Theres other ways, such as NROTC at a college that carries it and get a pilots slot and a medical degree. So you could fly Super hornets, and then off of your 6th month combat cruise you could do pharmacy or the medical field. So yes it is possible.
@Imladris18 Thats what i meant Lol, of course they will fight along side F/A-18, but over time F/A 18 will slowly be replaced by the successor F/A-35. Isnt it suppose to be one of the carriers is due to be retired so the new Ford Class Carrier along wiht the F/A-35 is suppose to replace it?
@how2krushkings am confsued to pilot thease do you join the navy or air force? casue the Hornet replaced the f14 tomcat that is only used in carriers...
man those things stop pretty fast hey? hey im just wondering here, im wanting to go into medicine when im older and obviously that takes many years of study so im just wondering would it be possible for me to become a fighter pilot as a part time job until i finish me medical degree because i would really like to fly one of these things
This video is awesome. Makes me sad for Scott Speicher though. Wonder if we will ever really know what happened to him that night in Jan., 1991 over Iraq. Was it a Mig? or something else? Did he eject or not? We may never know unfortunately.
if you have any colour blindness you are not allowed to join any military aviation. G forces, yes can gain tolerance for it by doing lots of working out and exercises(abs, neck, etc..) and the navy has a "hook" manuever for G's which they practice using. the only thing that can affect your height is the ejection, well if it happens to often. i hope a i helped a bit. if you want to know more just message me
@stiksoldier Oh I love my physics :D, i have no problem reading gauges on fsx, or on the cessna 152 out at bankstown airport, I know, I know, fsx is nothing compared to real life, but just saying, my next door neighbour's nephew just got into the RAAF as a trainee pilot, he gave me alot of motivation when he lived next door.
the air farce doesn't fly from carriers, they need 10,000 feet of runway & an air conditioned officers club. If you want to be the best in the world you have to be a naval aviator which means you have to join the Navy or the Marine corps.
Btw are there any chances to get into other countrys airforce or something like that because my countrys war plane is pilatus PC9 and i would love to fly in a jet. Hehe i know these are just dreams that cant come true.
Ohhhh man.... In the time that they must not fight in War they have the best Job on this Planet!!! My hole life i wantet to be a Pilot, now I´am 23 and it`s to late. But once in my life i will take a seat on a flight with a Jet! I need only 8000$ ;P ^^ after this a can die with a smile in my face!!! Sorry for my bad english! Peace and out, Dave.
Hey! I was with the Cowboys for 3 years as a Navy Corpsman. I absolutely loved it!
Wow! Flying one of those has to be the most amazing experience in the world. Nice video! I liked it even more than U2's official video for this song.
By far my favorite fighter jet video of all time. God Bless.
Saw an article in the local newspaper about a young man who graduated from my high school in 2004 who now flies these F/A-18s, Feeling so happy for him.
These guys rule the world. There's nothing that can top this feeling! Awesome video...
A big salute to all the guys out there doing this 24/7, 365 days a year!
I had this on my play list 10 years ago then lost it.. Finally after 10 years found it again.♥️💪👍
im trying to go to the us naval academy and this has to be the most inspiring video out there....thanks to whoever posted it
I'm an artist and I've drawn & painted all types of aircraft from P-51s to B-52s but have never drawn an FA-18. I shall draw or paint on before I die. It's a very remarkable aircraft.
No problem, I had a blast making them, figured I would share them with the world!
Great video and excellent choice of music! We all want to be flying that plane!
thank you capitan (i hope) Nelson for this video and for what you do for us.
Easily one of my favorite vids on CZcams. Thank you.
Doesn't get much better. Great stuff Toad and editor
You did a great mix. Fantastic. keep rolling more videos.
HELL YEAH! thanks for posting these dragons vids.

excellent video!!! Love the jet!
This is a very nice video. I think U2 is a great choice. Shows the Hornets grace and power. U2 has longevity....like this Hornet.

Great video!

brilliant.. absolutely brilliant
best video on utube of an f18
I got no connection to the dragons other than interest. The US navy vids are by far the best on the net, always enjoy them. I'm from Australia, all our fighters are US Navy jets so the videos suit us well. Great work dude.
I remember seeing my first F-18 Hornet aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln It was impressive. The cockpit is so technologically advanced.
beautiful aircraft....
Amazing
Awesome!!!
gotta love the dragons!
esse vídeo ficou ótimo, parabéns!!!
very nice video

wow.... that is amazing, but it must be frustrating at landing and a dream at flying!
@skippyskater you also have co-ordination, speed reading tests (for dials and controls and so on) , spatial awarness, and they ask you every time you seem them have you/are youpassing physics most important subject (for recruitment anyway)
100%love for JET
What a fucking feeling that must be
that is my favriot jet plus the blue angels use the F/A-18 hornet i just saw them at the nh airshow that the F/A-18 hornet is so badass
@scottrules95 in the navy you don't usually have any restrictions on breaking the sound barrier! :)
to fly these you have to join the Navy or the Marine corps. the F/A-18 A, B, & C replaced the F-4 phantom & the A-7 corsair 2. the Phantom was used on the smaller carriers the U.S. Navy used to have that were too small to handle the Tomcat. the A-7 was an attack jet. the Tomcat was replaced by the F/A-18 E/F super hornet which is a different aircraft from the F/A-18 C Hornet.
thanks =D
57-60 great footage
yeah man go for it, nothings too late =D
@alekzander2010 I'm biased, but the Naval Aviators use these more than the Air Force. The piloting sector of the Air Force is more focused on ground support, whereas these jets are mainly used for air to air combat.
that would be fun as hell
Man i really wana fly one of them!
Yeah man me to! we'll make it :D
@SpartanB146 I wasn't talking about who was flying in this video, but how2 just said join the Navy if you want to fly. The Air force offers the same thing...not just the navy. That's what I was pointing out.

there are catch cords on aircraft carriers that stop the plane otherwise they wouldnt have enough room to stop
Must be due for some more vids Adam, been a while
@stiksoldier Thanks for your interest :), I've been going crazy on the maths and have been looking for leadership opportunities throughout my school, In primary school I was a well respected prefect and backup house leader (athletics carnivals and such).but I wouldn't think they would take into consideration primary school achievements would they? Maybe, but I was wondering what specific time of camera do they put in front of the pilot.
nice paint scheme
oh ok thanks!
looks like 11 people fell overboard and didn't see it
I wanted to know, how did you get this footage, are you in the fleet? and what program do you use to compile all the footage. cheers.
Im currently taking the required subjects at school to maybe one day earn my seat in one of those babies, off course I wouldn't be taking part in carrier operations considering Australia don't have carriers! (hmph!) But i hope to one day fly an F/A-18 out from Avalon, VIC. Its my lifelong dream :)
u will dude. as will i ! us three in the air just like this ! man i cant wait ! they get PAID to do this !
sweet elliot u have the same dreams as me, but probably lot more chances to actualy fly F-18 or any other jet.
ah ok sweet, i always wanted to fly a jet, thanks for that =D
these planes are insane. makes you feel bad for the enemy!
@how2krushkings Or something called the Air Force, I could be mistaken though.
Hey 51Sarge51. You could go to the Naval Academy and get a degree in both Aeronautical Engineering and/or Astronaumical Engineering and a medical degree. nice HUD feature @2:58 - in case pilot falls to spatial disorientation?
go to "see all comments" and do "ctrl" "F" to find the rest of this conversation. You're missing out on an actually polite youtube debate.
yeah good point with the medic thing, but i was wanting to be a doctor, like you know a general practicioner
Does anybody know what kind of cameras are used to captures these videos?
@how2krushkings Actually it's called the Air Force
How do you stay fit to be able to do those hard tasks? I want to fly navy jets and I don't how you get selected to fly jets
man those things stop pretty fast hey? hey im just wondering here, im wanting to go into medicine when im older and obviously that takes many years of study so im just wondering would it be possible for me to become a fighter pilot as a part time job until i finish me medical degree because i would really like to fly one of these things
Great idea. Bring back the ANZACs I say!
good point, but i'll look into it to be 100% sure =P...no harm in looking
also there is a lot of very dim colors that colorblind people can not pick up very well so that poses a problem too.
@JetMechMA i dont think so man the pilots are supposed to be ready and have had enough practice
This video is awesome. Makes me sad for Scott Speicher though. Wonder if we will ever really know what happened to him that night in Jan., 1991 over Iraq. Was it a Mig? or something else? Did he eject or not? We may never know unfortunately.
the 11 dislikes were from the pilots mum
@ceskazbrojovka17HMR Lol sorry, I was reffering to the airshow, they have one every year and display hornets.
if you have any colour blindness you are not allowed to join any military aviation. Btw are there any chances to get into other countrys airforce or something like that because my countrys war plane is pilatus PC9 and i would love to fly in a jet. Hehe i know these are just dreams that cant come true.
I wish I had better eyes when I was younger. This was my dream job. Sadly, not to be. Kids if you have the opportunity...Take It!
@JKAJENKO Damn right
@alexxxandre91 same here :D
Ohhhh man.... In the time that they must not fight in War they have the best Job on this Planet!!! My hole life i wantet to be a Pilot, now I´am 23 and it`s to late. But once in my life i will take a seat on a flight with a Jet!
