  • Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Lillehammer, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Oksana Baiul of Ukraine skated well despite the injuries suffered from the collision with Tanja Szewczenko of Germany the day before. She would manage to complete her program with the help of anti-pain injections, but nerves have made some of her landings a bit shaky. Nevertheless, she would win the Free Skate, edging out Nancy Kerrigan of the United States. By winning the Free Skate, she would move up from 2nd to win the Gold Medal here.

    • @ferdyspears
      @ferdyspears Před 6 měsíci +1

      Lets not get carried away. She won on artistry, not technical merit. She was out skated by Nancy, technically. The judges preferred the artistry.

    • @ADEAL918
      @ADEAL918 Před 4 měsíci

      @@ferdyspearsnot exactly. It can only be said that Oksana won on artistry because the second mark was the tiebreaker on the score card of the 9th judge-the German judge, Jan Hoffmann. But the truth is, their overall scores were equal in artistry: six 5.9’s and three 5.8’s, just from different combinations of judges. And that was fair. Their artistry was both breathtaking. In different ways and for different reasons-their styles are different, but both can give you the chills. The problem was that Nancy was undermarked technically and Oksana was DRASTICALLY over marked. Nancy should have gotten no lower than 5.8’s on the first mark-three judges gave her 5.7, and Oksana should have had no higher than 5.6 on the first mark. She got five 5.8’s and a truly laughable 5.9 from the Czech judge on the first mark. Three of the five judges who put her over Nancy (Czech, Ukrainian, and Chinese) actually had them tied on the artistic mark but had Oksana winning on the technical mark. That’s ridiculous. Nancy was both more clean AND more difficult technically. Only two of Oksana’s first place ordinals were based on a perceived artistic edge-Germany and Poland. (The Canadian judge also had her ahead on the artistic mark but properly gave Nancy a bigger edge on the technical mark to counteract this.) Personally I’d have them tied artistically but with Nancy at a .2 or .3 edge technically, as the Canadian judge did. The break down was like this:
      British judge: Nancy wins both marks
      Polish judge: tied technically, Oksana wins on artistry
      Czech, Ukrainian, and Chinese judges: tied artistically, Oksana wins on technical merit
      U.S. and Japanese judges: tied on technical, Nancy wins on artistry
      Canadian judge: Nancy wins on technical, Oksana wins on artistry, but by a smaller edge than Nancy’s technical edge
      German judge: Nancy wins on technical, Oksana wins on artistry, second mark breaks the tie.

    @3Axel1996, I responded to a comment on one of your other videos about how Tanja Szewczenko's performance was cut out by CBS, but I wanted to address it again here because I wondered about something related to this clip. So CBS edited the broadcast, but do you know if Verne and Scott did some, or all, of the commentary afterward? Some of it does feel like genuine reactions, but at the end of this clip, right after we learn Oksana's marks, Verne only mentions Surya and Katarina as being left to skate. I believe that in actuality Tanja was next, so Verne must have known that she wasn't she going to be shown.

    She absolutely deserved the gold. No question who was better, I think it shouldn't have been that close at all. Oksana had beautiful artistry, elegance and flexibility, and the choreo itself is really fun to watch too. You can tell she enjoyed every moment of it. Her jumps were high, her speed very fast, compared to Kerrigan (however the quality of the jumps technically was the only thing in which the American was better).
    Oksana is like a balerina on the ice - the ballet movements and elements are obvious. So beautiful.

      Frankly, I preferred Oksana's jumps which were superior if based upon nothing more than their sheer power; use of the correct edges & more difficult entries. Nancy's jumps barely came off the ice. Wish you'd seen it for yourself. Oksana was "the complete package." Jumps, artistry, technique, persona & confidence. Agree with the rest of your post. But if you think Kerrigan was great technically you weren't there in real time. If you love Kerrigan's jump technique you'll love Michelle Kwan's too.

      i disagree. Though Oksana's a better skater on this day she made enough faults to lose; and Nancy skated to an almost perfect program. Oksana chose the more difficult technical program and missed! If you look at the judges who scored Oksana #1 It explains exactly whats going on. Check the scoring on both Nancy and Oksana and you will find what is the obvious.

Nancy did a valiant job & turned in the performance of her life. But Oksana Baiul just did everything a little bit better than everyone else. She's so polished and so refined with all the details. Seamless, polished performance deserved 6.0's. Oksana Baiul was just magical and other-worldy. What a majestic child woman! This performance transports me to a better place. Exquisite, just beautiful like an ice angel. Oksana was just perfect here. No one can ever top her--unforgettably unique. This performance has eternal beauty. Baiul gave the world these unforgettable moments on the ice that were captured on film, tape and now CZcams to be enjoyed for generations. Thank you Lord God for giving us this exquisite & majestic skating performance from this rare comet of talent kissed and blessed by You as only You can do.

    Oksana actually had a very difficult life before Olympic Games, she had no Mom no Dad and her grandmother died before these games. No support! And btw she was the 1st one who represented Ukraine (a new country on the map after Soviet Union's collapse) in the sport. And as they mentioned in the video, she was injured right before the day of the performance. That's crazy!

    her program was more difficult than Nancy's and she showed more grace/emotion/artistic flare. Baiul deserved that gold. Nancy is not gold material. Nancy's break was that Tonya was so emotionally messed up and had slacked off at that point. as well as some other skaters not living up to their potential. if they had Nancy wouldn't have even won second place let alone even won a metal.

    Oksana was more than just more feminine than Nancy. She was stronger, faster, jumped higher, was tougher skating badly injured something Nancy could do for a little bump on her knee at nationals. Oksana was more courageous, athletic, graceful, talented, charming, charismatic, more box office, more famous, more interesting, more celebrated, more admired, more animated, theatrical & elegant. Girl was majesty on ice and nobody could touch her she changed the sport & innovated the pro ranks.

    I remember watching this live. I was not a bit surprised by Oksana's win. Although she had some trouble, Oxsana's character and passion on the ice could be compared to no one. Nancy Kerrigan may have dotted all the i(s) and crossed the t(s), but her routine was safe and boring! Oksana landed 5 triples, all different. She was playful, passionate & fun, interacting with the audience and making them a part of her performance. Grace alone doesn't trump passion & heart in the arts.

    Oksana is an absolutely phenomenal skater; her grace and artistry on and off the ice is amazing (even at such a young age). She deserved the scores and metals she received. Nancy, unfortunately showed her unsportsmanlike, ugly side for all to see. Personally, I’ll remember that more than her injury.

    Solid program for its time. Seems someone understood the rules of the freeskating program are about the 8 required artistic elements and not about technical requirements. At least Galina knew her stuff & the judges concurred the program was "difficult" whereas they described Nancy's as "front loaded" filled with technical elements to hide the weaknesses in the 8 required artistic elements. 1 of the judges was a sports scientist specializing in skating the other a skate maker. Well done judges

    A part of me wishes she hadn't had so much success so quickly because maybe she would have kept competing in the amateur ranks and we could have seen more of her skating. I was disappointed she didn't change this long program this season as she did with her short program, which was just brilliant. She was a brilliant skater and I just wish we could have had a few more years of her competing. It's pretty mind boggling that she only skated two competitive seasons. One Olympics, one Worlds, two Europeans. And she was just 16! Just would have been nice to see her stick around for longer.
