  • Here is a story about One of the worst restoration jobs I have ever seen on a chrome bumper. I was even more surprised when I found out the car was restored by the TV program Wheeler Dealers.
    After much studying of the program it featured in it was obvious this terrible bumper was fitted by them.
    It just goes to show not everything you see on a reality TV show is close to reality.

    If you look at the earlier Wheeler Dealer shows the restorations were absolutely terrible, real back street bodge jobs. I remember the Mazda one and the MG one also being terrible. The camera work avoided you seeing just how bad and bodged aspects of the cars were. To be fair I think they improved in later series but you are absolutely right.

    I just had a similar experience at a local chrome shop here in Manitoba Canada. I sent them a very workable straight bumper. It came back so wavy, pitted, and half of it was burnt from polishing. I gave them a week to provide a refund before I post up their work on social media so others don’t have to deal with the same issues I am dealing with.

    Absolutely shocking, but as has been mentioned this is commonplace against all these car tv restoration shows as I know mechanics who have worked on such cars and a lot of jobs are bodged, and not all cars are genuinely sold. The Capri featured in Series 1 has always been a talking point in our community, but they had no budget. The Spitfire was series 6, in 2009, and the budget was still not massive. To be fair to Edd, given that he is a genuinely nice bloke and does know how to engineer things (for anybody knows his sofacar was around years before Wheeler Dealers started to air), this sort of "workmanship is the exact reason he got fed up with the American producers and fell out with Brewer. Sometimes the new owners of such TV cars actually fix the problems and make the cars better. I feel for the owner of this and the subsequent scrap metal this bumper is now.

    That show is not about real restoration. They bodge up the cars to look as if they are fixed but leave problems that will come up later. Mud and grime are left under the cars, engines are still covered in oil and repairs are often half baked. Mike is a second hand car salesman so what do you expect. It's often restoration on a budget where problems are hidden rather than fixed.

    Pretty sure that most of the cars that WD featured don't actually get sold, with most of them the mot history ends about the time they were on the show. The people you see buying are usually someone they know pretending to be a buyer.
    it is just a show for your average punter so don't expect high end detailed finishing.

      CZcams has plenty of brilliant restoration "shows" with dedicated people spending months restoring a car properly. The commercial TV world has given in making a relevant programme about this as you can't do it cost effectively. My recommendation, for bodywork anyway, is Rusty Beauties on CZcams. I cringe at Wheeler Dealers but I suppose they got people interested but then so did car restoration mags that have been going a lot longer. I do admit to watching the later Wheeler Dealer shows though.

  • @alvaro5162
    @alvaro5162 Před 3 lety +1

    I totally agree that this bumper is very badly chrome plated, but it is not for the reasons you say.
    The main problem is that this bumper is very poorly arranged and has very deep scratches that are impossible to remove.
    Even if they had polished the steel the best they could and then applied a thick coat of copper to allow them to re-polish the bumper before giving it the nickel, those marks wouldn't go away.
    Anyone who has seen chrome bumpers knows that this is a poor quality finish because it does not cover the inside of the bumper and to disguise that defect they painted the interior.
    The lack of adhesion you showed when removing a piece of nickel from the bumper can only be a consequence of poor cleaning of the piece before pleating, but it has nothing to do with the low amount of nickel.
    All these problems have nothing to do with the fact that the work was carried out in an automated industrial plant or that they are not restoration specialists, the problem was generated by the Wheler Dealers when trying to repair a part that was impossible to chrome plating correctly that they would throw away. Obviously, they just wanted the cheapest job possible without worrying about quality. If they had been concerned about quality, they would have bought a bumper in good condition.
