CDL Test, Class A 2024. "Parallel Park Conventional"

- Parallel park Conventional, The first of the advanced maneuvers. Remember during the CDL test you'll only do ONE of the advanced maneuvers, you'll do either PP Conventional, PP Sight side, 90 Degree Alley dock. It's a random selection made by the examiner. Before you do this you've already performed the straight line and one of the offsets.
You're allowed two free pull ups, you can take as many as you need up to a point. Pull ups are the least amount of points "1 point after the two free" so do them to gain a better position. The G.O.A.L. is limited to only Two. You cannot take a third look.
Encroachments are 2 points for any part of the vehicle that crosses or touches a boundary line. On a Class A vehicle both vehicles, tractor and trailer are scored separately. You could have part of the tractor and part of the trailer encroached and that would equal 4 points. You cannot finish an exercise encroached. You shouldn't finish outside a boundary line for your final position. The final position has to be adhered inside the boundary or there will be a 13 point penalty just for that and you'll fail. You'll be allowed up to 12 points total for a pass. The 13th point is a FAIL. It's required that you exit the vehicle using three points of contact at all times. Failing to do this properly could result in a automatic failure for an unsafe act. Leave a comment please.

I appreciate this video as it gives the proper steps to execute this particular maneuver without taking forever. I feel confident about this maneuver now, thanks for the video.
Best video I have seen on this. I tried and failed miserably yesterday, watched this video like 10 times last night, went in today and nailed it. Confident for my test now. Thanks so much for this!
That's great! I'm glad this helped so best of luck going forward...You got this!

im super new to this stuff not really used to driveing any thing long and have barley drove with a trailer on a reg vehicle so its very intimadateing but im dedicated to compleate this
Thank you for this video!! Before my test this afternoon I watched it a few times over and it definitely helped put things into perspective for me. I never thought of breaking this parking maneuver into three parts! I went in and killed the parallel test! Many thanks!
My advice is to break it down for each axle group. Learn the position for each axle group and don’t proceed until you’re satisfied with each position. Thank you for the comment!
Tomorrow my test and parallel parking been kicking my butt. I’m about to watch this video over and over. I got another practice today.
Exactly how they have been teaching us in school. If you know the points, you’ll nail it every time.
Exactly!
Passed my CDL test today I nailed parallel parking all of skills
Perfect, I'm proud of you and everyone who tells me they passed. This program is difficult and it's a great accomplishment when you can get this done in the short amount of time that is allotted. Congratulations!
Very simple, slow and awesome way to teach. Very nice. Thanks
I just wanted to take time and thank you Mike Logan for helping me with those maneuvers to pass my road test, I just got my CDL, thanks again, God bless you
And I want to take the time to thank you for leaving a comment and I want to wish you the best going forward in your new career.
Just wanted to say thank you for your video.I took my skills test today and really didnt think I would have to parallel park but i did and passed my test first time.I watched your video only one time but I thank God I did because that is how I passed remembering your video. So Thank You.
Your welcome!
Thank you so much for the author of this video. Today I passed my CDL exam after failing 3 times!!! I wish I watched this video before I took my exam. My last exam I passed everything except Parallel Parking. So that try was the 3rd one and I failed. I had to redo everything again. Few days ago I was searching about parallel parking and found this video. This is what exactly I was looking for and this techniques told in these video worked out perfectly. I can’t wait to start my job now and again thank you!!!
I'm happy that this video series helped you out
This really did help, thank you!
I have to say, this is by far the best explanation and video visual aid I’ve seen. Well done! Well explained and demonstrated. Thank You
Wow, thanks!
Great videos Mike thanks, really helped me. Keep up the good work
Great way to teach it. Thank you..
Thanks Mike. I used your way to train for Parallel Park and for Offset Back/Left/Right. It works great. I didn't even use any pull ups. Thank you for your help!
That's great!
Thank you for the great exzampel my respects.
@Mike Logan, I was struggling with my parallel parking and my test was 2 days away. I hadn't found consistency in my directional changes. I went back to your video and decided to use your system exactly. I wanted to practice like I was at the test, so I used a get out and look mid-maneuver like you did; it enabled me to assess if I was right on, too deep, or needed to go further in. Actually being in back of the truck enabled me to really visualize what needed to happen and when. Presto!! I was consistent in the final placement and confidently performed the maneuver at my test. Parallel parking would have been the only thing to hold me back, but thanks to you and your video, I'm now a CDL holder.
Great comments! Others will benefit because you realized what the problem was and you described in detail what you did to resolve it. Good job. Best of luck going forward.
Everyone take note, GOAL, very important!
BRO🙏thank you so much for leaving your comment, lol. I’m pretty much in the same scenario expect for my test being on the 18th (8 days from today) so you just made me feel a lot more confident and gave me more hope that I’ll pass first try🤞

Good Luck Patricia, I'm glad you found this to be simpler. It's not that hard but when you look at it for the first time it seems overwhelming. This holds true for everyone. Take your time and don't lose focus and you'll be fine. Take the pullups and looks if you need them. Thank You!
Mike Logan hey Mr Mike any pointers on me trying to get my CDL any videos you recommend me watching I have been alley docking parallel parking and seems to me that I’m having most difficult backing up and my opposite steering totally sucks

Working on this maneuver right now, I got truck & trailer In the space perfect. Thank you for the video! This helped me a lot.
During my CDL practice days, I have watched all You tube videos including this. But overall, I would say, make a plan in your head before you start your skills. Assume virtual maneuvering and follow that you will be end up close...best of luck!

@@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest hahahaha! I'll be taking a CDL class soon, any tips you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Try to find a truck driving school that is independent from companies. This will allow you to choose who you want to work with who has a training program. Doing it this way gives you more freedom. Really take your time in the beginning and stay focused and don’t get yourself into something that you’re not sure about. You need a clean record for the first year. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you best luck in everything you do moving forward!

I need a little extra convincing to go for my class A, how hard is it to drive them ?
There’s a learning curve for anything that you’re not familiar with. If you like to travel and don’t mind the solitude then it may be a good option. If you decide to try this career there are so many options pertaining to places to work or even owning your own business. Good luck!
@@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest learning a new skill, traveling & being alone sounds like a dream !
I'd say to do it! My advise is to contact a trucking company that doesn't have their own truck driving school. You'll have a employment commitment contract that requires you to work for a said amount of time to pay for the school. You want a company that does have a program for entry level drivers and ask about their requirements to get a position as an entry level driver. If it seems like a good fit then go for it. Don't ever lease a truck from a company that makes you believe you're an owner operator. email me for other tips mikelogan99@gmail.com Good luck!

Way to go!
Wow thank you!! Never thought of it as 3 different axles that makes better sense than what 5 different ppl were teaching me.
That’s correct, once you position the trailer axle the next step is to parallel park the tractor the same as you do your personal vehicle. Thanks for the comment!
@@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest thank you for replying! Testing on Wednesday. School has had me on pretrip so I been watching your videos over and over even watched it with an “instructor “ 😂😂

@@DestinationTakeover. do the tandems have to be all the way back when testing?
I am currently In CDL A classes. We are learning this maneuver now.
Thank you Mike for this video, this is not even close to what I was taught. Had my CDL test yesterday and got to the parallel and failed. Man I have never felt so depressed as I do now, I pray I can do this on my return test next week.
Phillip, You can do this, Take it one step at a time. If you notice in my video I don't talk about anything except what you're supposed to do for each step. The next statement is Very Important! Once the trailer axles are in the correct position, parallel park the truck just like you would park your personal vehicle. I promise the maneuver will work this way. I do watch the back of the trailer because you don't want to go too far back. Focus on where all the tires are in relation to the boundaries. Good Luck!

We practice with the space of the box (length wise) the length of the truck plus 10-12 feet, not 15. We used to do 15 but students that took the test said it was much tighter so we changed it just in case.
Thanks for the comment, everyone has their own techniques for practicing. The testing dimensions are 15 feet and the test administrators are required to adhere to that.

Thank you!! Great job on teaching this.
@Hello Dave how are you doing
I think most of us mess up because of the left and right steering but once you get that down it should be no problem
You’re exactly right, and in addition to that learning where your vehicle is because it’s much larger than anything you’re used to.
Yeah, determining if you should turn left or right can be problematic and confusing at first. It was for me. I think the other problem is getting the tractor at the 45-degree angle to the trailer on your first hard left turn. I like how this video mentions you are simply just trying to systematically get each 3 set of axles into the space. This is the fastest and simplest explanation video I have found on the reverse offset maneuver!
Great video and this is the reason I passed my test today. No thanks to my instructor.

Larcardo, The first turn to the left is all the way. Try to get as much done in the shortest amount of distance. Remember you're limited on the amount of space you have on this manuver, lenght of truck plus 15 additional feet. Not sure if the information got to you before you test but GOOD LUCK!

Of course, I’ll wish you good luck my friend. You got this! Let me know how you did!
How’d it go?
Question??..How hard do you turn the wheel to the left on the first turn when your tandems get to the cone?
I experimented on the initial set-up. I made sure that my trailer single axle tire is staged on the inside of my tire (closest to the tractor) with the cone and then I would proceed with my maneuver - that indicates that I won't clip/hit the cone
Good job, thinking through the different ways of learning this is key
If the front cone is a little in front of the drives you will clear.
I failed this maneuver 2 times....I get it in at the School....then choke at the DMV...No issues with straight back....offset....and passed cola and pre trip...man....
Manny, try to relax and take your time. If there are time constraints the examiner will let you know. Where I test there are not any time constraints. I've seen several students get in a hurry and then blow it. good luck!
I just now...failed my dmv test...3rd try....Paralell parking....very bummed...perform this easily at School everytime...not at dmv....venting...

Can you do incab inspection for automatic? You have the best instructions and I learned parking watching your videos.
Yes, When doing the brake test study everything involved with the three required Air brake system checks. I go through them in my video "In cab Inspection" Not doing those 100% correct is a fail. Two other test for the brakes is the parking brake and the service brake test. All of the procedures are in section 11 of every CDL manual that you get from the state.
Mike Logan can you do your gauges and light check at the end? I’ve memorized it a certain way. As long as you mention everything, they can’t fail your right? Of course doing the air brake test and tug test correctly
@@Swara96 Yes, any order is fine. Keep in mind you can miss a few items and still pass. You cannot miss any of the three required air brake checks like I mentioned earlier.
