  • Second of the advanced maneuvers. Remember during the CDL test you'll only do ONE of the advanced maneuvers, you'll do either PP Conventional, PP Sight side, 90 Degree Alley dock. It's a random selection made by the examiner.
    You're allowed two free pull ups, you can take as many as you need up to a point. Pull ups are the least amount of points "1 point after the two free" so do them to get in a better position. The G.O.A.L. is limited to only Two. Get out and Look, You cannot take a third look.
    Encroachments are 2 points for any part of the vehicle that crosses or touches a boundary line. On a Class A vehicle both vehicles, tractor and trailer are scored separately. You could have part of the tractor and part of the trailer encroached and that would equal 4 points. You cannot finish an exercise encroached. You can finish outside a boundary line for your final position. The final position has to be adhered to or there will be a 13 point penalty. you will fail for that mistake. You'll be allowed up to 12 points total for a pass. The 13th point is a FAIL.
    Ask questions to the examiner if you're unsure about anything.

    Mike, I would like to thank you very much for your series of CDL training videos. I watched every one multiple times prior to ever getting inside a truck for the first time in my life. The parking videos are especially helpful. I spent one week practicing everything (PTI, Skills, and Driving) and watching the videos over and over again. I took my CDL test yesterday (not Colorado) and got a perfect score. I never would have imaged I would be able to parallel park a big truck, especially after day one of my practice driving! Mr. Eagle, It won't matter, all of the steps are the same and the space to park in will be the lenght of the truck plus an additional 15 feet, that applies to all CDL vehicles whether a combination vehicle or a Straight vehicle. It will help if your trucks turning radious is small compared to what I think may be your case, a larger turning radious. Just be careful at the rear of the vehicle and take those pullups. Two are free but take more if needed, they're the lowest point value. And get out and look, Thanks for the comment!!

      You're stuck in a situation where you have to figure out what works best for you. Your goal is to do what they ask so you can get the CDL their way and then go get a job. You can't get hired unless you pass this training. Once you get a job you'll be with a trainer and they'll show you how things work in the real trucking world. They'll show you how to back a semi so you can park at a truck stop. You're right, you will almost never have to parallel park, but if you have to 10 years from now you'll be able to do it. Please don't get too discouraged and give up.

      Yes sir you’re correct. If you watch the video again that’s exactly what I said to begin the exercise. Just wanted to clarify that the steps and instructions in the video are correct. With the new modernized test being implemented I don’t think this maneuver is in the CDL test anymore. School still may teach it but you’re not tested on it. The offset that you tested on now is more like the conventional parallel park except for it has 100 foot lane which is a lot more than the conventional parallel park. Thanks for the comment.

    When you steer all the way to the left in the beginning, you will hit parked vehicles next to your truck if there was any.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před 3 lety +5

      Try to understand this is a test for your CDL This is not the way you parallel park with vehicle’s to the right in typical real world scenario. This is the way you park to get your CDL and you’ll never have vehicles as obstacles while testing. About four years ago they changed the procedures and now require the truck to drive forward and stay parallel with the parking space. Prior to that we were able to drive the truck into the parking space and then come out of the space at an angle. This exercise is specifically designed to be challenging. I might also add in a real world scenario I wouldn’t offset like they require you to do or alley dock this way.
      Thanks for the comment!

I looked up your Maryland "Commercial drivers manual" and on page 12-1 at the bottom left column it states "Outside vehicle Observations (Looks). It explains this very clearly on doing so, how to exit the vehicle using three points of contact is a must or you could auto fail for not doing this safely. It also explains securing the vehicle. You are allowed a maximum 2 looks just like I explain in my video series. This test is based on the Maryland Commercial drivers manual.

      The answer is yes, Try to get accustomed to how your truck turns. Some have a very small turning radius like this truck I'm using in the video. Because I can get the front of the truck aligned with the trailer quickly I wanted the Drive Axles to be in the box a little bit more. Best of luck with your upcoming test!

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před 3 lety +1

      Good deal, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have an advantage. The measurement of the parking space is the length of the truck plus an additional 15 feet. The turning radius is an important factor because if you can return the front of the truck into the space quickly then you may not give the vehicle enough time to put the drive axles in the space. In my video, I point this out by pulling up and getting the drive axles in deeper. If I would’ve continued then the right side of the truck wouldn’t have been all the way in the space. I also wanted to point out that it’s OK to do pull ups to make corrections. Get two free pull ups and beyond that they’re only one point each.

      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před 3 lety +2

      I respectfully disagree with your tester. Thank you for sharing this information and congratulations to you for passing your test. The only way to fail your backing maneuvers is to accumulate more than 12 points total or finish an exercise outside of the boundary lines. Taking a pull up after your allotted free pull ups is one point each, and an encroachment is a two point penalty. If you finished an exercise with a vehicle Outside of the boundary line this equals 13 points which is an automatic fail. All throughout the time that I have been doing this I hear comments about different rules from other states. The CDL testing system is supposed to be consistent from one state to the next. The different state CDL manuals are written word for word and the test should be administered based on the CDL manual. I plan to research this a little further and I’ll post any additional comments. Enjoy your new career! Thanks for the comment my friend!

      Sorry that you're having a hard time and you have conflicting information. I taught to stop at the mid point of the landing gear which will give you the correct angle. After you see the mid point then steer to the right and once the tractor and trailer are lined up you should see the center of the back row of cones. This puts you in the parking space at the correct place. Try it this way and tell the instructor either nothing or explain that this works best for you. Thanks for the comment!

Retarded to learn anyway as you will never have to parallel park a semi! I mean really! In 18 years one instructor said he did twice in his entire career, another instructor 4.5 million miles over his career and never did once! It’s so frustrating!

      I've had several comments just like this. To be honest you will only do one of these maneuvers like the CDL school teaches and that's the straight like back. In Colorado, because I can't speak for other states, you're instructed to do the other backing maneuvers a certain way. You have to do very well at that skill to get your CDL. It's to show them you have the skill set to handle a Class A vehicle when parking it based on the way you're instructed. Skilled Truck drivers don't do the manuvers like this in a real world scenario. For example; I will alley dock sitting at a 45 to the dock not a 90 or straight line into it if I have the room. Parallel park I will dip into the space first as I'm driving past it so the trailer is pointed to the back row of cones on the initial pull forward.

      Hi Uncle Bob, Good question, even though the probability of doing a DSPP is quite remote, If you're asked to do this for your CDL you want to be able to do so to prove that you can manuver a big rig in many different situations. In my present situation I'm off road everyday and manuvering the vehicle around several obsticles both on the drivers side and passenger side, I'm glad I know how because hitting unknown objects could cost me big time.

    Do you teach this procedure? Watching someone else doesn’t help me.

      Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment. Sage truck driving school teaches this maneuver with two students in the truck taking turns watching and driving. I think everyone learns different. I’m retired now so I don’t teach it. Thanks for the comment!

      No, there is no requirement for that. You can test with a 53 foot or a 28 foot, it doesn't matter. Your space will always be 12 foot wide and an additional 15 feet longer that the truck after they measure it from front to back including anything that overhangs. This is for all Class A and B vehicles.

      Left, that places the drive axles into the parking space keeping in mind you only want to go in partially leaving yourself room to turn in so you are evenly spaced in the center of the lane.

    The pull up that you did at 3:50, I didn't learn that till I failed my parallel (1st attempt) on 11/12/19 lol. The teacher at my school never taught us that but now I know I don't have to pull all the way out to fix everything. Is there a reason why you pulled forward and then to the right?

      I pulled forward to the left so I could get the truck moved forward because of the limited space for the exercise. Then to the right to get the back of the tractor further into the space. That was explained at 3:33 when I said I wasn't happy with how far in I went with the back of the tractor. Remember you have two free pull ups so I did take one. Pull ups can go completely to the beginning of the exercise but you don't have to if not necessary. Thanks for the comment, good luck!
