CDL Test, Class A 2024 "90 Degree Alley Dock"

  • The third of the advanced manuvers. Read ahead for the points system and other rules. Remember during the CDL test you'll only do ONE of the advanced manuvers, you'll do either PP Conventional, PP Sight side, 90 Degree Alley dock. It's a random selection made by the examiner. When I tested and many other examiners do this is we roll a dice labeled with the three manuvers.
    You're allowed two free pull ups, you can take as many as you need up to a point. Pull ups are the least amount of points "1 point after the two free" so do them to get in a better position. The G.O.A.L. is limited to only Two. Get out and Look, You cannot take a third look.
    Encroachments are 2 points for any part of the vehicle that crosses or touches a boundery line. On a Class A vehicle both vehicles, tractor and trailer are scored separately. You could have part of the tractor and part of the trailer encroached and that would equal 4 points. If you encroach you'll be stopped and required to clear the encroachment, which means an additional pullup or reverse in direction, whichever applies. You cannot finish an exercise encroached. You can finish outside a boundary line for your final position. The final position has to be adhered to or there is a 10 point penalty.You'll be allowed up to 12 points total for a pass. The 13th point is a FAIL.
    Ask questions if you're unsure about anything.

    I parked my van on the side of the truck stop reserved for vans and RVs. In the morning I woke up to see a big rig backed in next to me within a foot of my mirror. There was a box truck on the other side of him and he was similarly close to him. All I can say is, THESE GUYS ARE GOOD at backing up!!!!

    As a former OTR driver and now as a Trailer Jockey/Spotter/Yard Dog at a major D.C. This is a great training tool. The 90 degree alley dock is my go to backing manover. even after 10's of thousands of backing the alley dock is fantastic. Yes I use the off-set when needed but learning trailer control is key. Thanks!

  • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest

    Scott, or Steve? Good question, a bit hard to show in the video because where we practice this we have lines painted and we make specific references to those lines. The mesurements are this, from the entrance to the alley dock go out 26 feet. That's the first line. The second is at 38 feet. That makes the first 12 foot lane, Try to line up in that area somewhere in the middle of of 26/38, preferably closer to the 38 than the 26. Going forward past the entrance of the alley is tricky. Try taking the back of the trailer past the left side of the alley (standing at the rear of the Alley and looking forward) about 20 feet, start with that and as you follow the instruction I've layed out the trailer will either go in or turn in too soon or too late. Reposition the vehicle accordingly. Example: If you go too far past the entrance by 5 feet just move the vehicle 5 feet forward. Once you have the marks down it will go very nice for you. Thanks for the comment!

      It’s very similar to anything else. Get experience and good experience in different types of trucking jobs. That would be helpful but I wouldn’t suggest job hopping. It takes a good knowledgeable work history and then apply. Truck driving schools allow a certain number of hours for paid training. I would find out if it would be OK to volunteer on your own to go in the classrooms and also ride in the trucks unpaid for more valuable experience.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před rokem

      The reason for the limit of two GOAL is this. You're challenged to see if you can do the backing exercises using your mirrors. In the real world setting you should get out as many times as needed. "PULLUPS"
      The first two pullups are free with no points accessed. If you use a third one or more you are penalized one point for each pullup after the two free. I explain the point system in all of the backing videos so take a minute to read this and familiarize yourself with the points system. This information is not in the CDL drivers manual.

      @@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest All of us (students) feel the same way, it's a regular topic of conversation. when I met the class who went through the program before me they said the same thing, my whole class is saying the same thing, and now the class coming in behind me is saying the same thing.
      The school claims a 98% success rate (student who end up earning a CDL), however of the 15 class A students who started with me only 2 of us have made it as far as having a test date (doubt either of us will pass). We are now 3.5 months and $9,000 in.
      There are 6 instructors and besides their mandatory hour or two of rides with students per day they spend all day inside looking at their phones and talking trash to each other. I have received literally ZERO instruction on how to do my maneuvers, I just go on youtube and watch videos and try out what i see. If we ask the instructors a question or for a demonstration or really for anything at all they cuss us out and degrade us. Their disgusting human beings. I could go on and on but this is already getting long.
      If I complain to the school I dont believe it will go anywhere because the instructors laugh and joke about previous students who filed complaints to the school. They pull out the print outs of complaints (that are supposed to be anonymous but aren't) and read them and laugh about it in front of the new class and call the person who filed the complaint all kinds of nasty things. This is why I would like to file my complaint with someone who can actually do something about it... the state, the feds, whoever provides them their "accredited" status, the BBB, the FMCSA, I dont really know where to start.
      On one hand I just want to get my CDL and move on, but the thing is how many more students are they going to rob $9,000 from and not actually provide any training or instruction at all in return? How many other people are they going to degrade and yell and cuss at when their just trying to get some training and better their (and their family's) lives. Its not right that they get to keep doing this to people over and over again.

      @@renegaderatsI just now read your comment and my jaw dropped. I’m sorry that I missed it for the past few weeks. I’ve been out of the country in a remote area with spotty internet at best. If the school is accredited by your state then quite often the state provides tuition assistance to qualifying students. I’ve been seeing more of these type of comments and I’m wondering what is going on. I always recommend to document any and all situations. Make notes of anyone who was present or also involved. This is important because as time passes you’ll forget some details. I would try to get some results from the company owners, directors or someone who is in charge at the school. From there go to the state employment agency or the department that assists with tuition assistance, job search and placements. Somewhere along that line you should find additional information about how to handle this. I wish you the best. If you want to reach out to me, my email is mikelogan99@gmail.com

Also, once you have your trailer slightly aimed towards the cones, often times you can keep the steering wheel straight and that "offset law" will guide it in the right direction for you with little adjustments as you come into/near the cones. • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před 5 lety +3

      Trailer angle stays the same. At this Truck driving school, we're doing this maneuver from the same beginning point every time. It makes more sense if you're a student here at this location. At your location try to establish a beginning position that is the same each time. Then use the technic I show where you use a fixed object on the trailer to line up your Drive axles each time. That will enable you to do this exercise correctly each time. If your trailer is 2 feet too far to the right of the entrance then do the exercise exactly the same but move 2 feet forward from where you started the last time. My students here learn this exercise last, #6 so by then they're getting comfortable with backing. It turns out that this is one of the easiest exercises to do for them. I hope this helps!

    I dont have the confidence we are being taught properly, we are doing one full turn to the right back up until we see about 1 ft from the landing gear, then back straight, and try to arc it into the space, normally I come in late, but sometimes early, need at least one pull up. Seems like a waste of time, but it is what it is.

      I think you’re instructed accurately. If you’re coming in to early or late try to learn how to counter steer well in advance to direct the trailer properly. You can also start further ahead or back if you have a way to gauge that. You get two free pull ups so why not use them. I think this maneuver is the most challenging. Thanks for the comment!

      Bacause it's a test to evaluate your skill set. If your penalties are only taking pull ups you'll be allowed 17 total for the three backing exercises. You get 5 free, 1 for the straight line backing and two each for the advanced exercises. Then you have a 12 points penalty total that you have to stay under to pass. Pull ups after the free ones are 1 point each. You get 5 free looks for three exercises. I think that's pretty lenient.

    Thanks for the video, Mr. Logan, it does clarify some aspects I was struggling with. Any advice on when to do the first hard turn to the right? I never get the timing right, and then I'm too late or too early when getting close to the cones. I cannot really find landmarks, as we're training on the fairgrounds and they keep moving stuff around when they plow the snow. The only fixed reference points I have are the cones.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před 5 lety +8

      The starting point should be in the middle of the alley and the forward boundary cones. Remember I said they were placed 70 feet in front of the alley entrance. That would be placing the center of your vehicle about 35 feet. I start by turning the steer all the way right until I see the Landing gear leg on the passenger side of the trailer and I stay on the leg until I get close to the entrance. From there turning the wheel right will push the trailer to the left and opposite for the left If you can't get the trailer in the spot try to start the exercise further up or back. If you can establish a consistent starting place each time the maneuver will go better for you. It takes practice to see how the trailer tracts. Your focus is on the landing gear leg for a long distance, then look out the window at the trailer tires.

    Perfect parking. Anyway, in a real world scenario there of course would not be any cones for guidance so maybe placing some objects like bright colored gloves on the ground and creating an imaginary line between IT and either the LEFT or RIGHT alley dock bumper (depending on if the driver is viewing the initial backing from the driver or passenger side mirrors) as a point to hit and not back up pass once the TRAILER is on the inside of the alley dock boundary should be a good alternative. Once on the target object(s), creative a few more forward and backing maneuvers, but always keep that target object in sight until that trailer is all way inside the opening of the dock, then finish with STRAIGHT LINE backing to complete the alley dock parking until around 3ft from the dock. DONE.

    Hi Mike. I'm in CA and have to get a Class A CDL to haul my 12000lb gooseneck horse trailer. I recently failed the 90 degree Alley Dock. My question is, is there a "lane that you must start in AND must back up straight, until you're at a specific footage right before the alley dock? Or can I start anywhere within the 70' boundaries? Also, what does the pic in the beginning of your clip, say? It's not clear enough to read. I'm thinking it's simular to what I'm trying to describe. Thanks!

      The picture shows the dimensions of the testing area. I've answered your question at other times for others. Start with the truck in the middle of the 70 foot space and drive your trailer past the entrance of the alley about 20 to 30 feet. That should get you close and you can gauge it from there. If you don't quite get the trailer to go in the space just start further ahead or back some but try the backing procedure the same each time.

    Also im having trouble judging when my trailer passes the cone, to give it more bend.
    I either get it just inside the cone, or too far right.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před 3 lety +2

      Making the turns the way you said is correct. I would suggest watching the tracking of the trailer tires. Watch how they approach the entrance cones but you have to make the adjustments in advance approximately 10 to 12 feet before. The basic backing concepts always apply. If you need the trailer to move to the right turn to the left. Moving to the left...turn right. The trick is, to do this and allow yourself the correct amount if room to crank that hard left to get the tractor lined up with the trailer. You do this as soon as you see the trailer is going in correctly. The space in front of the cones is limited to 70 feet for class A and 50 feet for class B.

      Think of it like this, your lane is typically going to be 12 feet wide. You’re in a 8 foot wide truck. As you approach your turn position the truck as far to the left or to the right in your lane as possible without going over. This is the first step in gaining an advantage so your trailer will clear. Drive ahead and turn hard to the right into the second 12 foot lane and stay in that lane for a distance that allows your trailer to clear. Depending on how long your trailer is and how quickly your truck turns determines whether this technique will work. This works for every truck we have at our school. If that second lane belongs to oncoming traffic you must always yield to that traffic. That means you should stop and wait for the traffic to clear before you proceed. It sounds like you may have several things you’re struggling with and if that’s the case you can email me at mikelogan99@gmail.com

I noticed you only made left turn corrections the whe you were close enough u did right to line trailer in. You also stopped and got out when your back wheels were lined up with cones. Your video is amazing very helpful would greatly appreciate any advice about when to begin my straightening out turn. Thanks

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Před 5 lety +2

      When I say spotting the trailer that means placing the back tires of the trailer at the location I want. This maneuver requires you to start from the same location every time so the technics work the same each time. I'm always aware of the angle of the trailer as it goes in the space. I turn left most of the time because my goal is to end up with the truck straight in front of the trailer so I can push the trailer in using both mirrors. Turning hard right for a short amount of distance and then turning back hard left will correct the angle that the trailer is going in at. It will push the front of the trailer to the right. Always be aware of the angle of the trailer and the truck position. If you can't see the vehicle and you think you're going to hit a cone, use the looks, we only allow two so the last one should be used for the final position. You will be graded for the back of the trailer position. Thank you, I do take calls so you can find my phone number in the Video description section.

      Sorry to hear this, The turning points and procedures are the same as I show in the video. The 28' will react quicker but the parking is the same. Just be ready to make adjustments quickly and try to go slow and do each step before you go to the next one. For example, on the parallel park I show you how to line up with the back wall of cones. you want to be pointed to the middle. Don't go past that step and try to complete the maneuver until you are pointed to the back wall, then continue and move the trailer axle to the boundary line and get out like I did. continue on with each part but break everything into small segments. It's easier to remember like that, Thanks!

      If you read my reply to zacky 2011 I suggest using the same starting point each time. Do you have any markings on the pavement that you can line up to? Then establish a point on the trailer to line up to. Stay on that point with the edge of the drive tires looking in the mirror and see where the trailer goes. Play with it, do different steering maneuvers and see how the trailer reacts. You're always wanting the truck to end up in front of the trailer on this exercise. Your eyes are focused on several parts of the vehicle at once, not just one thing. Watch the back of the trailer to see if you're going into the space. Look at the front of the trailer to determine the angle of the trailer. Then look at the truck, is it going to end up in front of the trailer so you can push the trailer straight in. It's a tough one, good luck!

      Try to establish a beginning point that is the same each time. By using the landing gear or some other fixed object on the trailer you'll see by following that with the outside edge of the drive tires you'll spot the trailer each time. This helps you learn how the maneuver is done. It is unlikely that you'll do this 90 degree in a real world situation. A 45 degree angle works better. To answer your question about turning right, try it several different ways in practice and see how affects the front of your trailer. You'll notice when the front of the trailer moves over it changes the angle and affects the back. You can try different things while you're learning. Mess it all up on purpose and see what it takes to fix it. Thanks for the question!

      Mike, Take a pullup any time you need to reposition the vehicle to gain an advantage. You'll start the test back before you pass the entrance of the Alley. I refer to this as the staging area. The instructions will state to drive forward past the entrace of the Alley dock and position the vehicle parallel to the outer boundary line. This will set you up at a 90 degree angle. The scoring doesn't start until you reverse direction. A Pullup happens when you reverse direction to gain an advantage. Even rolling a short distance in the reverse direction will be considered a Pullup. The first two are free and any after 2 free have the smallest penalty point amount. I always encourage pullups and looks.

      The concept is the same. All of the course measurements are the same. On a 53' you may want your tamdems slid back more so you reduce the trailer swing. Start in between the entrance of the forward boundary cones and the entrance of the alley. That distance is 70 feet. drive past the entrance about 30 feet and then adjust your starting distance according to how accurate the trailer rear is placed into the alley. You have to play with it to see what works. Good luck!

      AAMVA "American Association of Motor vehicle Administrators" is the association that sets up the testing regulations and strives to have all states and the examiners doing the same thing pertaining to testing CDL applicants. Are they all the same now? Probable not but trying to get there.

      Mike Logan in California we can not use any pull ups until our rear of the trailer or the trailer axles have broken the plain of the entrance of the alley....ie past the first cones..

      @@shellfish5078 I should have responded two years ago., my apologies. I want to post a response so others can read this. Flat out, that's bull shit because they who are teaching or conducting the exam have placed extra rules that are not in section 12 of your CDL Manual. The test is based on the book and every states book says the same things. I would present the question to those who told you that....SHOW ME where it says that in the book. Bottom line--------- IT DOES'NT---------Study the book and test by the book!

      Not sure what to say about making a general statement and not giving any details. Section 12 of your CDL manual shows the diagram of a 90 degree alley dock. This video shows a very accurate demonstration on how to do the exercise in the exact dimensions that you'll be tested in. If you have a different way to complete the exercise that's okay.

      Schools make money by training students, if students passed the cdl exam the first time, the school loses revenue. I'm speaking from experience, in NJ, we had a CDL school that got grants from the state allowing unemployment residents to get their CDL for free and if the student failed the CDL exam, they would get additional training for free until they passed.

      Section 12 refers to the maneuver as an Alley Dock. When the truck is set up and staged and sitting at the point where you're about to back up to do the maneuver, it is at a 90 degree angle to the dock. Thank you for the comment!
