Aug. 8, 2019 | Bobby Carter -- Today, Aug. 8, marks the one-year anniversary of when NPR Music published the late Mac Miller's Tiny Desk. Last week, Ty Dolla $ign visited NPR headquarters to record a fantastic Tiny Desk concert of his own that will air in its entirety soon. But once we wrapped the taping, something special happened: I reminded Ty that he sat at the desk almost a year to the day that his friend, Mac, delivered what would be one of his final performances.
The band paused and huddled. They mulled over a few notes in a matter of seconds then gave me a signal that they were ready. The room was silenced and the cameras started rolling again.
Here's Ty performing a moving rendition of his 2016 collaboration with Mac, "Cinderella" from Mac's fourth studio album, The Divine Feminine. Ty's flanked by two close friends of Mac, Thundercat on bass and Justus West on guitar, both of whom played at the Tiny Desk with the Pittsburgh-born rapper a year ago.
SET LIST

Beautiful job, bro, it's beautiful 😂

Bro...
My man on that guitar just put his heart into that solo and no one sees this he’s literally tearing up putting so much emotion into this because it’s not just another play through it’s the last one ever
Bro thats thundercat, have some respect.
ronald bangtidy no it's not
ronald bangtidy he’s talking about Justus west on guitar, not thundercat on bass
ronald bangtidy eek don’t disrespect
You said it right bud.
Everyone talking about thundercat but man Justus west poured his heart into that shit. That moment of silence at the end you can tell everyone is still hurting over his death.
dcantiporda Justus definitely made that guitar cry for all of us..
And we all understood and felt that pain from emptiness that we all have.....R.I.P. MAC MUCH LOVE!!
Never heard one artist say a bad word about Mac even before he passed. That is probably his legacy
He was a real one, he just had his own demons.
Wiz Khalifa on the breakfast club kinda threw some shade at him.

thank you
this.
2:15 - 2:24 sounds like he's weeping with his guitar. Such an emotional sound.
WHereTHeWIldTHingsAReNOt more like weeping through his guitar 🥀
I was
I come back to this video just to hear that sound. Beautifully sad
WHereTHeWIldTHingsAReNOt never thought emotion could be so accurately represented through an instrument
The guitar playing in this really reminded me of Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, another beautiful song.
I never heard a guitar cry like that. Holy sjit. God rest Mac's soul.
this is first time that I hear Ty Dolla without autotune. He has unbelievable voice.
Ty Dolla $ is underrated AF as far as natural singing voice
Saw him in concert and he was actually better sounding than this! He has a amazing voice. Chill dude also respect.
Unbelievably awful
im sure he was inspired by Mac to sing.
Fr tho . Mad respect
I still watch the Mac Miller tiny desk concert monthly. It's more than just a video. It's a time capsule.
Edit : Thank you for all the replies over the months people. You guys kept bringing me back and I'm grateful for it.
I watch it daily.
Youre so right
Same
agreed
I´m with you on this. I just watch it and think that we did not knew that the worst was yet to come...
The way he made that guitar cry... he put everything into that guitar solo. It brings tears to my eyes. RIP Mac
How is it possible to miss someone you didnt know, Im crying over someone ive never known. Ive seen him live once and it was magical, what a legend rip man.
SAme...
Mac said you best get to know him if you listen to his music, so he was no stranger to you ❤️
Mac has shared his emotions through his music so good that we felt it as it were our own
I never got to see him live and this is my biggest regret

I vote NPR hangs the "Don't Trip" hat Mac had on during his performance on the shelves
Excent I SECOND THAT BOTE
I third that vote
Fourth that
I'd buy that fucking hat even if it was $1,000
Mike Posner it’d be more than that
This group is STACKED. Thundercat, Cory Henry and Justus West, some serious talent right there. Ty$ killing it on vocals too. This is gonna be on repeat.
Supetstacked jeez
Facts!!!!
damn i never peeped thats Cory Henry
Specks I just peeped that today also bro
Shut up we know who they are stop bragging
Ty’s vocals are severely underrated. Go listen to some of his solo projects and you’ll get a whole different perspective of how good of an artist he is.
He's vocals aren't underrated lol he's everywhere in the industry for a reason. One of the best voices in RnB period.
Cameron Stanton underrated by the consumers. He’s very underrated. You’re talking about the industry I’m talking about fans.
id agree...hella underrated
Yeah, his voice is great, and I’ve been a fan since his first releases. But am kind of sad he had to look at lyrics for one of his more popular songs, especially since he is tributing it for someone. Mac sang 3 songs perfectly off memorized lyrics and was still having tons of fun with it and didn’t make a single mistake.
Youre right its underrated I only knew that he rap and I just discover that he can sing when he did a riff and run on ariana grande's safety net
My guy Justus on the guitar is saying something special with that solo, talking a type of love we wish we could comprehend , it’s poetry communicating a beautiful understanding . Music is a Beautiful thing , yours is Loved Mac .
Thank you ty dolla sign for this I think every Mac fan needed this

I always manage to hold it together until that part
"music is a beautiful thing" - Mac Miller.
Wasn’t expecting them to leave Mac’s verse and it totally hit me. Left out like the hole he left in the world when he passed. Irreplaceable.

Thank you NPR for getting Mac's crew to play along with TY$.. this was trully priceless.
To the brother Justus West on the guitar..I feel you and I hope you found comfort in your solo.. Mac left more friends than fans in this world..
❤️ perfectly said
I dunno if you are right, but your words almost stole a tear from me
This was deep. I think you may be right. Feel like I was his friend without ever meeting him. Much love
Its a beautiful thing ha
As a fan of Mac. When he passed it felt like I lost a friend. I know that sounds silly but it’s what I felt
Don't forget a shout out to the drummer for knowing his place in a smooth soft rendition of a song like this. So many drummers don't know how to chill out and just vibe.
That guitar solo is hauntingly beautiful.
Aside everything, can we please take a second and appreciate the exceptional guitar-playing on this beautiful Abasi?
Omg.... Yesss he put his heart into that, you can tell it meant something special to him.. It was the best part of it. IMO
Justus West was on Mac's Tiny Desk concert one year ago. Watching him play here was like a case study on conviction and passion
Thundercat
@@wil-cw7vg didn't see him playing his solo as i was writing this comment. obviously, all of them are amazingly good. Justus West just instantly caught my attention, as i'm a long-term guitarist myself, probably not as gifted as a single one involved.
@@wil-cw7vg Thundercats awesome but OP meant the guitarist. He's got a Tosin Abasi signature guitar, which is a guitar by Animals as Leaders' guitarist Tosin Abasi.
Here for Thundercat on that bass all day too 💯
Melissa Hillman yesss!!! 🙌

likin the pink locks too
Melissa Hillman You fuckin up if you don’t know who Cory Henry is. Most talented member is the band hands down.

At the very mention of Mac’s name, all of these artists would stop what they’re doing and pay tribute. This Tiny Desk - one of the very last stops for Mac - felt extra heavy today.

I still get teary eyed when I think about Mac, I’ve been listening since I was like 13 and I’m 22 now
Kelly O'Brien fr bro literally helped me evolve as a person
Same. My sister used to play Knock Knock on repeat and it annoyed the hell out of me but I started listening to Mac because of that and now, all these years later, it's me playing his music on repeat Haha. His death was the first time an artist died and made me feel something about it
Same bro. Literally.
Hope we all flourish
Same..as he progressed through his life I feel like we had similar evolutions. Felt like I lost a good friend the day Mac died.
I don't think people realize the musical talent in this group right here. pure artist's
Listening to this gives me an abnormal wave of peace and also an underlying tone of every type of sadness I’ve ever felt.
This is the most perfect way to describe it
Wow. This.
guitarist was pouring his heart out this set. big ups to him and the rest of the crew that swung by.

I love Ty. His voice is unmatched in the industry. Originality is key in the industry.
Wrong. Connections is key. You can be as original as you want, but if you don't know certain people who can put you in certain positions, you won't get where you wanna be in any form of the entertainment industry.
Anthony Barnes 2 not about wrong or right. You have a very well articulated point. Thanks for sharing!

The electric guitar gave me chills. So much emotion.

It's always so weird when you realise 90% of the times, the artist's voice is a thousand times more beautiful like this, without all the autotune and post-prod.... Makes you think
That’s why this concept is so golden.
Because you can hear the real emotion in their voice
Let this performance be what it is which is a tribute to a friend and not a complaint about an artist's artistic decision. Music isn't meant to please everybody, just to be heard by everybody.
