Actually... you can take the key off of Madonach's body and just leave through the Dwarven Ruin exit as normal...
I have never seen anyone ACTUALLY serve out their full sentence, cos I guess everyone just assumes it was "for life".

Problem is you can't get to Madanach until you finish the Forsworn conspiracy, I tried every dialogue option with Borkul. I even tried killing him, the key to get past the gate to even get within arms reach of Madanach was nowhere to be found.

Can't put enchants on the shiv but can use OP smithing plus alchemy potions to fortify marksmen.

I'm pretty sure you can't improve shivs at a grindstone, plus I never used bows, so marksmen wouldn't have been useful anyway.

Nah, it's on the default difficulty setting. I never change the difficulty settings in Bethesda games.

Yeah, I love their games to bits, but the combat is so clunky that increasing the difficulty just makes the games annoying as hell.
